Ferroelectric 2D antimony oxides with wide bandgaps

The first two-dimensional (2D) polymorphs of antimony dioxide, namely, γ-Sb 2 O 4 and δ-Sb 2 O 4 , are predicted using the evolutionary algorithm combined with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Out-of-plane ferroelectricity is found in γ-Sb 2 O 4 , while in-plane ferroelectricity is found in δ-Sb 2 O 4 . The predicted dipole moments of γ-Sb 2 O 4 and δ-Sb 2 O 4 phases are 36.63 and 14.96 eÅ, respectively, implying that they can be good candidates for making ferroelectric devices. Further, the calculations show that doping with other group V elements or applying strain can lower the switching energy barriers and thus facilitate switching. Results from GW calculations show indirect band gaps of 5.51 and 3.39 eV for γ-Sb 2 O 4 and δ-Sb 2 O 4 in their monolayers, respectively. Raman spectra are calculated to facilitate the experimental investigation of the predicted structures. The existence of both in-plane and out-of-plane 2D ferroelectricity and the large band gaps make this material system particularly interesting for potential applications.

Thermal storage system with coupled tanks

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for high-efficiency thermal storage with a fluid-filled “battery” tank positioned within a fluid-filled “reservoir” tank. Fluid loops couple the tanks to a heat pump and a building. The heat pump can charge the battery tank or deliver thermal energy (cold or heat) to a building, using the reservoir tank or ambient air as a thermal energy source. The battery tank can discharge energy to the building jointly with the heat pump or, at periods of peak electricity usage, with the heat pump switched off. Operating modes allow significant savings in electricity usage and mitigate the “duck curve.” Low duty cycle usage of the reservoir enables efficient underground thermal storage with less digging than conventional geothermal technologies. Additional efficiency is achieved with phase change materials installed inside a tank or in a tank wall, providing temperature regulation. Control methods are disclosed.

Numerical simulation of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet with coaxial shielding gas

A two-dimensional ( r, z ) numerical simulation of the discharge characteristics of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ), with coaxial shielding gas, was performed. The helium working gas flowed in a central capillary tube, engulfing a needle electrode powered by 13.7 MHz radio frequency sinusoidal voltage. The N 2 shielding gas flowed in the annular space of a coaxial tube. These gases emerged, in laminar flow, in a 78%N 2 -21%O 2 -1%Ar dry air ambient. The characteristics of the APPJ with shielding gas were compared to those of the APPJ without shielding gas. The nitrogen shielding gas hindered the diffusion of oxygen and argon from the ambient air into the helium jet. With the shielding gas present, more nitrogen penetrated into the helium core, causing a shorter plasma ‘plume’. The flow rates of the working and shielding gas, critically affected the gas temperature, and in turn the discharge characteristics. For a He flow of 2 standard liters per minute (slm), switching on the nitrogen shielding gas flow (at 4.5 slm) reduced the on-axis O 2 and Ar mole fractions from 3.9 × 10 - 4 to 6.8 × 10 - 5 and from 1.9 × 10 - 5 to 3.3 × 10 - 6 , respectively, at an axial distance of 3 mm downstream of the nozzle. The radial profiles of the mole fractions of the ambient gases were monotonically and strongly decreasing towards the system axis, for short axial distances from the nozzle (~1 mm), but became progressively flatter at longer distances from the nozzle (3 mm and 5 mm). Simulation predictions captured the salient features of experimental data of ambient species mole fractions in the plasma jet, and the 706 nm optical emission intensity profiles of the He 3 3 S excited state.

MIND-MAC: Multi-Level In-memory Quasi Non-Destructive MAC Operation in Compact 2T-nC FeRAM for Efficient DNN Accelerator

We present MIND-MAC, a compact 2T-nC FeRAM architecture that performs multi-level, quasi-non-destructive in-memory multiply–accumulate (MAC) for deep neural networks. By exploiting voltage-controlled partial domain switching in MFM capacitors and read-transistor amplification, the cell stores multi-bit weights and gates bit-serial inputs to produce an accumulated current on shared lines. We combine TCAD-extracted parasitics with experimentally calibrated ferroelectric models in SPICE to validate device-/circuit-level behavior, and validate multi-level sensing and QNRO with measurements on a fabricated 2T-3C test vehicle. An analytical system model maps MIND-MAC to a 6-GB main-memory in-memory compute (IMC) architecture and benchmarks VGG13 inference in 61.08 ms at 964.99 mJ. Results indicate high density, reduced rewrite overhead, and energy efficiency, positioning 2T-nC FeRAM as a promising IMC candidate for next-generation AI hardware.

ESnet Secure Copy (EScp) v0.6

EScp is a high speed transfer tool with a similar command line syntax to scp. Unlike SCP it is designed to transfer files at high speed, thus far we have been able to show 100gbit/s transfers, although I expect that the throughput should scale in proportion to the network interface, i.e. I expect 400gbit/s performance on our 400gbit/s test bed. EScp achieves good performance through an innovative design (multithreaded, zero copy transfers), along with pluggable filters and I/O engines. As an example, you can switch from POSIX i/O to UIO by checking a different engine. It also natively supports encryption, and cheksums for file verification and transport security. AAA is through standard SSH (same as SCP). By taking advantage of filters, EScp supports transferring unstructured data and/or I/O to non-posix data sources. Examples include streaming data (i.e. from equipment), transferring data to the cloud, and/or supporting non-posix file systems (like HPSS).

Mechanistic understanding of pH effects on the oxygen evolution reaction

The oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal in many energy-conversion technologies as it is an important counter reaction to others that convert stable chemicals to higher-value products using electrochemistry. The local microenvironment and pH for the anode OER can vary from acidic to neutral to alkaline depending on the system being explored, making definitive mechanistic insights difficult. In this paper, we couple experiments, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, microkinetics, and transport modeling to explore the entire pH range of the OER. At low current densities, neutral pH values unexpectedly perform better than the acidic and alkaline conditions, and this trend is reversed at higher current densities (> 20 mA cm -2 ). Using multiscale modeling, this switch is rationalized by a change from a dual-reaction mechanism to a single rate-determining step. The model also shows how the alkaline reaction rates dominate in the middle to high pH range. Furthermore, we explore that the local pH for near-neutral conditions is much different (e.g., 2.4 at the reaction surface vs. 9 in the bulk) than the pH extremes, demonstrating the criticality that transport phenomena plays in kinetic activity.

pvlib iotools—Open-source Python functions for seamless access to solar irradiance data

Access to accurate solar resource data is critical for numerous applications, including estimating the yield of solar energy systems, developing radiation models, and validating irradiance datasets. However, lack of standardization in data formats and access interfaces across providers constitutes a major barrier to entry for new users. pvlib python’s iotools subpackage aims to solve this issue by providing standardized Python functions for reading local files and retrieving data from external providers. All functions follow a uniform pattern and return convenient data outputs, allowing users to seamlessly switch between data providers and explore alternative datasets. The pvlib package is community-developed on GitHub: https://github.com/pvlib/pvlib-python. As of pvlib python version 0.9.5, the iotools subpackage supports 12 different datasets, including ground measurement, reanalysis, and satellite-derived irradiance data. The supported ground measurement networks include the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN), NREL MIDC, SRML, SOLRAD, SURFRAD, and the US Climate Reference Network (CRN). Additionally, satellite-derived and reanalysis irradiance data from the following sources are supported: PVGIS (SARAH & ERA5), NSRDB PSM3, and CAMS Radiation Service (including McClear clear-sky irradiance).

Analytic Nuclear Gradients Including Oriented External Electric Fields in a Molecule-Fixed Frame

Electric-field-assisted chemistry has attracted much attention in recent years, particularly in the context of oriented external electric fields for controlling molecular structure and reactivity. Such fields have been explored in a wide range of applications, including switching materials, nanoparticles, controllable catalysts, medicines, and clinical therapies. However, the determination of fixed fields in the laboratory frame becomes ineffective for flexible molecules, as conformational changes can significantly alter the relative orientation between the applied field and molecular structure. In this work, we propose two molecular reference frames─the principal axis frame and the local reference frame─to define oriented electric fields within the molecular framework. These coordinate systems powerfully eliminate ambiguities in the relative orientation between the applied field and the molecule. Analytic nuclear gradients in the presence of external electric fields are derived and implemented, with an initial application to field-dependent geometry optimizations of cis - and trans -formanilide. Analysis of the resulting field-induced equilibrium structures reveals distinct structural responses, validating the accuracy and robustness of the proposed formalism. The analytic gradient framework enables systematic investigations of molecular properties and reactivity under arbitrarily oriented electric fields, opening new opportunities for computational modeling and rational design in electric-field-controlled chemistry.

Phase control of coherent acoustic phonons in gold bipyramids for optical memory and manipulating plasmon–exciton coupling

Recent efforts have targeted manipulation of nanomaterial vibrational modes in applications such as chemical/mass sensing, optical switching, and phonon-driven photochemistry. While impulsive photoexcitation can generate coherent phonons, multiple excitation pulses offer the prospect of control and manipulation of coherent phonon modes for functions of optical memory and logic. In this work, we use such an approach to inject an arbitrary coherent phonon phase into a colloidal ensemble of highly monodisperse gold bipyramids. We then demonstrate that this technique can be applied to a system that exhibits plasmon-exciton coupling to further manipulate the hybridization of the system. This ability to manipulate acoustic phonons and hybridization can enable optical logic applications of acoustic phonons in addition to optical memory.

Polarization rotation in a ferroelectric BaTiO 3 film through low-energy He-implantation

Domain engineering in ferroelectric thin films is crucial for next-generation microelectronic and photonic technologies. Here, a method is demonstrated to precisely control domain configurations in BaTiO 3 thin films through low-energy He ion implantation. The approach transforms a mixed ferroelectric domain state with significant in-plane polarization into a uniform out-of-plane tetragonal phase by selectively modifying the strain state in the film’s top region. This structural transition significantly improves domain homogeneity and reduces polarization imprint, leading to symmetric ferroelectric switching characteristics. The demonstrated ability to manipulate ferroelectric domains post-growth enables tailored functional properties without compromising the coherently strained bottom interface. The method’s compatibility with semiconductor processing and ability to selectively modify specific regions make it particularly promising for practical implementation in integrated devices. This work establishes a versatile approach for strain-mediated domain engineering that could be extended to a wide range of ferroelectric systems, providing new opportunities for memory, sensing, and photonic applications where precise control of polarization states is essential.

Grid Forming Control of PMSG-based Wind Turbines under Fault Conditions

Grid-forming control is widely envisioned as core technology ensuring stable operation of future power systems with increasing deployment of converter-interfaced renewable generation. However, research on grid forming control of wind turbines, especially under faults, is still in its early stages. In this context, this paper augments dual-port grid-forming control for type IV wind turbines with auxiliary controls to enable reliable fault ride through capabilities. In particular, the proposed control does not require a dc chopper or mode switching to grid-following control. Instead, energy-balancing dual-port GFM control is augmented with active rotor speed damping control and threshold virtual impedance for current limiting during faults. Different operating conditions of wind turbines are considered in a detailed electromagnetic transient simulation study to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

Unconventional Spin-Orbit Torques Due to Reduced Crystal Symmetries

Spin-orbit torques have emerged as a powerful mechanism for manipulating magnetic moments in spintronic devices, offering a pathway to more efficient and scalable memory and logic technologies. While conventional spin-orbit torques generated in heavy metals and topological insulators have been extensively studied, recent advancements in unconventional spin-orbit torques demonstrated out-of-plane spin polarizations that could effectively switch perpendicular magnetizations without the need for additional external in-plane magnetic fields, promising significant implications for the development of energy-efficient and compact spintronic devices. Unconventional spin-orbit torques are usually found in materials with low symmetries, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, topological insulators, and 2-D materials. Here, we provide a brief overview of unconventional spin-orbit torques and present two example material systems: CrPt 3 and MoTe 2 , both exhibiting strong spin-orbit coupling and phase-dependent spin-orbit torques, and focus on their unique origins and potential applications. We discuss the roles of magnetic and crystallographic orders in generating unconventional spin-orbit torques, highlighting how these factors contribute to the observed anisotropic and directional dependencies.

Artificial Diversity and Defense Security (ADDSec)

Artificial Diversity and Defense Security (ADDSec) machine learning algorithms are used to classify and cluster threats so that an appropriate response can be initiated as a mitigation strategy. The package includes an ensemble of machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines, naïve bayes, logistic regression, and random forest that evolve with the data to recognize anomalous behavior at the host and network levels. Inputs into the machine learning algorithms include end host system calls, system utilization, packet captures, and syslog messages. The machine learning algorithms can be retrained based on user defined intervals or on the number of packets received. ADDSEC's threat responses include Internet Protocol (IP) Address randomization, application port number randomization, and application library randomization. The IP randomization implementation is built on top of a Software Defined Networking (SDN) framework. The SDN controller installs flows on each of the SDN switches with randomized source and destination IP addresses. The application port numbers are randomized using iptables. The application library randomization is created with a LLVM compiler. All randomization schemes are transparent to the endpoints on the network. Estimation of Arrivals on Green at Signalized Intersections Using Stop-Bar Video Detection

Across the world, traffic congestion is increasing with alarming rapidity. Traffic signal control effectiveness, in coordinated networks, is often investigated in relation to the type of vehicle arrivals at the signalized intersections. Recently, several transportation agencies have switched from traditional loop detectors to video detection. When video cameras are accompanied by computer vision, one can extract more information about traffic “dynamics” than by using traditional inductive loop detectors. Collecting arrival times of multiple vehicles after the first arrival at the stop-bar detector might be challenging when using inductive loop detectors (since after the first arrival, detector status is always occupied). However, emerging video detection systems allow tracking of each vehicle’s entrance time in the detection zone, departure time from the detection zone, and the type of vehicle. This information can be used to estimate vehicular arrival and departure times, which then can be fed into machine learning algorithms to estimate arrivals on green (AOG). However, such research ideas have not been documented so far. Thus, this paper presents an estimation model for AOG, which was developed using multigene genetic programming. A robust experimental dataset was collected from a highly calibrated and validated microsimulation model of an 11-intersection corridor in Chattanooga, TN. The results of the model’s performance analysis showed the high accuracy of the training-, testing-, and validation datasets. The practical benefit of this model is that it can be applied to estimate arrival types at intersections where only stop-bar video detection exists.

Tuning the charge density wave quantum critical point and the appearance of superconductivity in Ti Se 2

The transition metal dichalcogenide TiSe 2 is an ideal correlated system for studying the interplay between superconductivity (SC) and a charge density wave (CDW) because both symmetry-breaking phases can be easily controlled by either Cu intercalation or physical pressure. SC appears in proximity to a CDW quantum critical point (QCP) induced by both Cu intercalation and applied pressure, raising the possibility of CDW-driven SC. Here, we report tuning the CDW QCP by simultaneously controlling Cu intercalation and external pressure and the appearance of a SC dome centered on the tunable QCP. When subjected to pressure, CDW ordering of Cu-intercalated Cu 0.025 TiSe 2 is completely suppressed at 2.3 GPa, where the residual resistivity and the resistivity-temperature exponent decrease sharply, indicating the presence of the CDW QCP. The upper critical field of Cu 0.025 TiSe 2 is 3.51 kOe, 16 times larger than that of pristine TiSe 2 , and its temperature dependence is linear, indicating that SC of TiSe 2 is switched from the two-dimensional- to anisotropic three-dimensional-like by Cu intercalation. These discoveries show that the simultaneous application of Cu intercalation and pressure move the CDW QCP and that the highest SC transition temperature is pinned to the QCP, suggesting that the SC in TiSe 2 is strongly correlated with CDW quantum criticality.

Feedback lock-in: A versatile multi-terminal measurement system for electrical transport devices

Here, we present the design and implementation of a measurement system that enables parallel drive and detection of small currents and voltages at numerous electrical contacts to a multi-terminal electrical device. This system, which we term a feedback lock-in, combines digital control-loop feedback with software-defined lock-in measurements to dynamically source currents and measure small, pre-amplified potentials. The effective input impedance of each current/voltage probe can be set via software, permitting any given contact to behave as an open-circuit voltage lead or as a virtually grounded current source/sink. This enables programmatic switching of measurement configurations and permits measurement of currents at multiple drain contacts without the use of current preamplifiers. Our 32-channel implementation relies on commercially available digital input/output boards, home-built voltage preamplifiers, and custom open-source software. With our feedback lock-in, we demonstrate differential measurement sensitivity comparable to a widely used commercially available lock-in amplifier and perform efficient multi-terminal electrical transport measurements on twisted bilayer graphene and SrTiO 3 quantum point contacts. The feedback lock-in also enables a new style of measurement using multiple current probes, which we demonstrate on a ballistic graphene device.
