System Resilience Benefits of Dual-Fuel Capable Generators

The growing dependency on natural gas (NG) for power generation raises challenges for ensuring the resilience of power systems during extreme cold weather. Dual-fuel capable generators that can switch from burning NG to distillate fuel oil during a NG shortage offer one way to alleviate these challenges. In this study, the impacts of gas unavailability on the IEEE 73- bus reliability test system (RTS) with 2019 updated generation mixture are explored. An extension to the standard production cost model formulation of unit commitment and economic dis- patch is proposed to allow representation of dual-fuel capable generators that can switch fuels between NG and distillate oil with a specified oil tank capacity and tank refueling capability. The operation of the system under gas unavailability with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of combined cycle and combustion turbine generators as dual-fuel capable with a one-day supply of fuel oil are simulated using PLEXOS, a production cost model. The dual-fuel generator performance, unserved energy, and system costs are fully assessed.

Hardware realization of a baseband processor for a SS-FDMA/TDMA/DAMA system

Hardware implementation of the NASA ACTS baseband processor is described which achieves the system message data handling performance required to perform satellite switching of high-rate baseband data. The hardware meets payload specifications for size, weight, and power. Hardware redundancy applied to critical paths in several functional areas insures that the reliability and life expectancy requirements are fulfilled. The remote reprogrammability of the processor message data handling and routing functions provides system flexibility for dynamic reconfiguration during rapidly changing traffic loads.

Preliminary study, analysis and design for a power switch for digital engine actuators

Innovative control configurations using high temperature switches to operate actuator driving solenoids were studied. The impact on engine control system life cycle costs and reliability of electronic control and (ECU) heat dissipation due to power conditioning and interface drivers were addressed. Various power supply and actuation schemes were investigated, including optical signal transmission and electronics on the actuator, engine driven alternator, and inside the ECU. The use of a switching shunt power conditioner results in the most significant decrease in heat dissipation within the ECU. No overall control system reliability improvement is projected by the use of remote high temperature switches for solenoid drivers.

AC/DC Power Systems with Applications for future Lunar/Mars base and Crew Exploration Vehicle

ABSTRACT The Power Systems branch at JSC faces a number of complex issues as it readies itself for the President's initiative on future space exploration beyond low earth orbit. Some of these preliminary issues - those dealing with electric power generation and distribution on board Mars-bound vehicle and that on Lunar and Martian surface may be summarized as follows: Type of prime mover - Because solar power may not be readily available on parts of the Lunar/Mars surface and also during the long duration flight to Mars, the primary source of power will most likely be nuclear power (Uranium fuel rods) with a secondary source of fuel cell (Hydrogen supply). The electric power generation source - With nuclear power being the main prime mover, the electric power generation source will most likely be an ac generator at a yet to be determined frequency. Thus, a critical issue is whether the generator should generate at constant or variable frequency. This will decide what type of generator to use - whether it is a synchronous machine, an asynchronous induction machine or a switched reluctance machine. The type of power distribution system - the distribution frequency, number of wires (3- wire, 4-wire or higher), and ac/dc hybridization. Building redundancy and fault tolerance in the generation and distribution sub-systems so that the system is safe; provides 100% availability to critical loads; continues to operate even with faulted sub-systems; and requires minimal maintenance. This report descril_es results of a summer faculty fellowship spent in the Power Systems Branch with the specific aim of investigating some of the lessons learned in electric power generation and usage from the terrestrial power systems industry, the aerospace industry as well as NASA's on-going missions so as to recommend novel surface and vehicle-based power systems architectures in support of future space exploration initiatives. A hybrid ac/dc architecture with source side and load side redundancies and including emergency generators on both ac and dc sides is proposed. The generation frequency is 400 Hz mostly because of the technology maturity at this frequency in the aerospace industry. Power will be distributed to several ac load distribution buses through solid state variable speed, constant frequency converters on the ac side. A segmented dc ring bus supplied from ac/dc converters and with the capability of connecting/disconnecting the segments will supply power to multiple de load distribution buses. The system will have the capability of reverse flow from dc to ac side in the case of an extreme emergency on the main ac generation side.

Multi-Agent Control of Lane-Switching Automated Vehicles for Energy Efficiency

The proliferation of automatic control systems and their connectivity accents the performance of their interactions. In particular, connected and automated vehicles could become high-impact examples thanks to their energy use and productivity effects. Ideally, a controller might collectively optimize all agents' control moves for a given objective. However, limits on computational complexity, incomplete knowledge of the central planner, and risks of a single point of failure make distributed control attractive as well. This paper proposes a collaborative heuristic to approach the performance of centralized control with decentralized-like computational effort. The related centralized controller is also described in detail and evaluated as a baseline. A collaboration-intensive obstacle avoidance scenario involving electric vehicles is simulated to demonstrate benefits over fully decentralized control. While centralized optimization performed best with an 8.6 % energy reduction, the collaborative decentralized scheme reached a favorable computation-performance tradeoff with a 6.7 % energy reduction.

Low-latency digital frequency synthesizer using the residue number system

A low-latency frequency synthesizer using the Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) technique has been designed. Called the Residue Assisted Frequency Synthesizer (RAFS), it exhibits frequency switching times which are reduced by more than 50 percent below previously published designs. The switching speed advantage is made possible by the use of the Residue Number System, which allows the pipeline lengths in the Phase Accumulator and other circuitry to be reduced significantly.

SiC-Based 5-kV Universal Modular Soft-Switching Solid-State Transformer (M-S4T) for Medium-Voltage DC Microgrids and Distribution Grids

Medium-voltage DC (MVDC) grids are attractive for electric aircraft and ship power systems, battery energy storage system (BESS), fast charging electric vehicle (EV), etc. Such EV or BESS applications need isolated bidirectional MVDC to LVDC or LVAC converters. However, the existing Si-based solutions cannot fulfill the requirements of a high-efficiency and robust converter for MVDC grids. This paper presents a 5 kV SiC-based universal modular solid-state transformer (SST). This universal current-source SST can interface either a LVAC or LVDC grid with a MVDC grid in single-stage power conversion, while the conventional dual active bridge (DAB) converter needs an additional inverter. The proposed SST module using 3.3 kV SiC MOSFETs and diodes is bidirectional and can serve as a building block in series or parallel for higher-voltage higher-power systems. The topology of each module is based on the soft-switching solid-state transformer (S4T) with reduced conduction loss, which features reduced EMI through controlled dv/dt, and high efficiency with full-range ZVS for main devices and ZCS for auxiliary devices. Operation principle of the modular S4T (M-S4T), capacitor voltage balancing control between the cascaded modules, design of components including a medium-voltage (MV) medium-frequency transformer (MFT) to realize a 50 kVA 5 kV DC to 600 V DC or 480 V AC M-S4T are presented. Importantly, the MV MFT prototype achieves very low leakage inductance (0.13%) and 15 kV insulation with coaxial cables and nanocrystalline cores. Here, the proposed universal modular SST is compared against the DAB solution and verified with DC-DC and DC-AC simulation and 4 kV experimental results. Significantly, the MV experimental results of a modular DC transformer with each module at MVDC are rarely covered in the literature and reported for the first time.

The Astromag superconducting magnet facility configured for a free-flying satellite

The magnet parameters of a free-flying version of Astromag and the parameters of the space cryogenic system for the magnet are presented. Consideration is given to the free-flyer version of the Astromag magnet. The diameter of the magnet, its cryostat, the satellite and the two instruments is limited by the 4.27-m shroud diameter of the Atlas IIa. The magnet coil must use a stable reliable superconductor which can carry the full magnet current at 4.2 K at a peak induction in the coil of 7.5 T. The magnet must operate in the persistent mode. The changes in the overall design and operating requirements for the free-flying-design Astromag suggest that the coils, the cryogenic system, and the charging system can be simplified without a loss of required magnet function. Attention is given to switches, trim coils, and plumbing in the low field region between the coils; the magnet charging system and the quench protection system; and cooled helium supply to the magnet gas-cooled electrical leads.

Improving Primary Frequency Response in Networked Microgrid Operations using Multilayer Perceptron-Driven Reinforcement Learning

Individual microgrids can improve the reliability of power grids during extreme events, and networked microgrids can further improve efficiency through resource sharing and increase the resilience of critical end-use loads. However, networked microgrid operations are subject to large switching transients, which can cause dynamic instability and lead to system collapse. These transients are especially prevalent in microgrids with high penetrations of inverter-connected renewable energy resources, which do not provide the system inertia needed to mitigate the transients. Existing generator controls can be modified to invoke a drop in terminal voltage in response to a frequency deviation, thereby reducing load and improving frequency response. This paper investigates the use of a reinforcement-learning--based controller trained over several switching transient scenarios to modify generator controls during large frequency deviations. Compared to previously used proportional integral controllers, the proposed controller can improve primary frequency response while adapting to changes in system topologies and events.

Evidence for Bootstrap Percolation Dynamics in a Photoinduced Phase Transition

Upon intense femtosecond photo-excitation, a many-body system can undergo a phase transition through a non-equilibrium route, but understanding these pathways remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we use time-resolved second harmonic generation to investigate a photo-induced phase transition in Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 and show that mesoscale inhomogeneity profoundly influences the transition dynamics. We observe a marked slowing down of the characteristic time τ that quantifies the transition between two structures. τ evolves non-monotonically as a function of photo-excitation fluence, rising from below 200 fs to ~1.4 ps, then falling again to below 200 fs. To account for the observed behavior, we perform a bootstrap percolation simulation that demonstrates how local structural interactions govern the transition kinetics. Finally, our work highlights the importance of percolating mesoscale inhomogeneity in the dynamics of photo-induced phase transitions and provides a model that may be useful for understanding such transitions more broadly.

Multiplexing core & sheath extrusion system development for additive manufacturing for inner-bead multi-material capability

Single-feed polymer extruders are widely used in large-format additive manufacturing (AM) systems; however, the increasing demand for multi-material functionality within a single part has driven significant innovation in this field. One approach involves robotic pick-and-place operations, while another explores mechanical switching of feed lines during extrusion. Although robotic pick-and-drop systems offer flexibility, they introduce longer layer times during material changes, which can negatively affect the structural integrity of the part. On the other hand, mechanical feed switching causes delays in material transitions, as the existing material must be flushed before the new material emerges from the nozzle. This poses particular challenges for smaller or more intricate parts. In this study we are developing a unique multiplexing extrusion system with core & sheath nozzle that combines two extruders via co-extrusion. This allows for a unique inside and outside inner-bead (i.e., within the same bead) multi-material capability. We believe that this technology will allow for combining neat and filled materials, ductile and stronger materials, and many other combinations to address the problems aforementioned above and disrupt the AM technology creating new opportunities and opening application areas.

System implications of large radiometric array antennas

Current radiometric earth and atmospheric sensing systems in the centimeter wavelength range generally employ a directive antenna connected through a single terminal pair to a Dicke receiver. It is shown that this approach does not lend itself to systems with greatly increased spatial resolution. Signal to noise considerations relating to antenna efficiency force the introduction of active elements at the subarray level; thus, if Dicke switching is to be used, it must be distributed throughout the system. Some possible approaches are suggested. The introduction of active elements at the subarray level is found to ease the design constraints on time delay elements, necessary for bandwidth, and on multiple beam generation, required in order to achieve sufficient integration time with high resolution.

Traffic Signal Control With Adaptive Online-Learning Scheme Using Multiple-Model Neural Networks

This article proposes a new traffic signal control algorithm to deal with unknown-traffic-system uncertainties and reduce delays in vehicle travel time. Unknown-traffic-system dynamics are approximated using a recurrent neural network (NN). To accurately identify the traffic system model, an online-learning scheme is developed to switch among a set of candidate NNs (i.e., multiple-model NNs) based on their estimation errors. Then, a bank of optimal signal-timing controllers is designed based on the online identification of the traffic system. Simulation studies have been carried out for the obtained control strategies using multiple-model NNs, and the desired results have been obtained. Moreover, compared with the widely used actuated traffic signal control schemes, it is shown that the proposed method can reduce vehicle travel delays and improve traffic system robustness.

A Data-Driven Passive Islanding Detection Scheme

This paper proposes a novel statistical parameters based data driven approach for passive islanding detection. The proposed scheme relies in the voltage data, measured at the point of common coupling, and is comprised of three stages. The Stage-1 quickly detects what is termed as coarse islanding, Stage-2 computes the decaying DC detector (DDCD), and 3) finally, the digital relay logic (DRL) is devised in Stage-3. The proposed scheme is tested as per the IEEE-1547, UL 1741 and IEC-62116 standards. Various tests are investigated on the modified IEEE-13 bus system, modeled in PSCAD/EMTDC, under stringent test scenarios such as power mismatch, induction motor starting effect, capacitor bank switching and various level of loads changes, considered for both single and multiple DG systems. The test results reveal that the proposed scheme can detect islanding in less than 2 cycles, and results in nearly zero non detection zone (NDZ). Also, the scheme can very well be used for single-phase microgrids too as it relies only on the single phase voltage information.
