Gravity flow of powder in a lunar environment. Part 2: Analysis of flow initiation

A small displacement-small strain finite element technique utilizing the constant strain triangle and incremental constitutive equations for elasticplastic (media nonhardening and obeying a Coulomb yield condition) was applied to the analysis of gravity flow initiation. This was done in a V-shaped hopper containing a powder under lunar environmental conditions. Three methods of loading were examined. Of the three, the method of computing the initial state of stress in a filled hopper prior to drawdown, by adding material to the hopper layer by layer, was the best. Results of the analysis of a typical hopper problem show that the initial state of stress, the elastic moduli, and the strength parameters have an important influence on material response subsequent to the opening of the hopper outlet.

Study of a columnar grain structure produced in a superalloy by gradient-annealing prealloyed powder extrusions

Annealing in a temperature gradient was used to produce a structure of continuous columnar grains in alloy 713 C made by extrusion of prealloyed powder. The columnar-grained specimens had tensile strengths within plus or minus 5 percent of those of the as-cast alloy at 760 C and 980 C but were significantly stronger at room temperature. Stress-rupture tests at 760 C and 980 C showed lives scattered from 17 to 376 percent of those of as-cast 713 C tested under the same conditions. X-ray diffraction studies showed the large grains formed upon annealing to have a well-defined texture, although the as-extruded material had none.

A thermal conductivity cell for small powdered samples.

A thermal conductivity cell is described for making measurements of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of small samples of powdered dielectric materials. The principle used is that of the line heat source. A novel way is described for applying this method so that much smaller samples than normal may be tested. This size requirement is necessary for investigations involving limited samples as does the Lunar Science Program. The method is checked by measuring the conductivity of standard samples and comparing the results with those found in the literature.

Vacuum handling system for powdered samples.

A sample system for handling powdered material under vacuum conditions is described. The system features linear motion of up to 0.25 m and the means for complete isolation of the sample and sample system from external apparatus. The system was designed for the measurement of thermophysical properties of lunar material from Apollo missions under thoroughest possible prevention of contamination.

Hydrogen halide cleaning of powder metallurgy nickel-20 chromium-3 thoria.

The Cr2O3 content of powder metallurgy nickel-20 chromium-3 thoria was reduced with atmospheres consisting of hydrogen plus hydrogen chloride (HCl) or hydrogen bromide (HBr). The nonthoria oxygen content or 'oxygen excess' was reduced from an initial amount of greater than 50,000 ppm to less than 100 ppm. Low temperatures were effective, but lowest oxygen levels were achieved with the highest cleaning temperature of 1200 C.
