First inverse kinematics measurement of resonances in Be 7 ( α , γ ) C 11 relevant to neutrino-driven wind nucleosynthesis using DRAGON

A possible mechanism to explain the origin of the light $\textit{p}$ nuclei in the Galaxy is the nucleosynthesis in the proton-rich neutrino-driven wind ejecta of core-collapse supernovas via the $\textit{νp}$ process. However, this production scenario is very sensitive to the underlying supernova dynamics and the nuclear physics input. As far as the nuclear uncertainties are concerned, the breakout from the $\textit{pp}$ chains via the 7 Be(α,γ) 11 C reaction has been identified as an important link which can influence the nuclear flow and, therefore, the efficiency of the $\textit{νp}$ process. However, its reaction rate is poorly known over the relevant temperature range, $\textit{T}$ = 1.5–3 GK. We report on the first direct measurement of two resonances of the 7 Be(α,γ) 11 C reaction with previously unknown strengths using an intense radioactive 7 Be beam from the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC-I) Center facility and the DRAGON recoil separator in inverse kinematics. In this work, we have decreased the 7 Be(α,γ) 11 C reaction rate uncertainty to ≈9.4–10.7% over the relevant temperature region.

Measurement of inclusive 𝐽/𝜓 pair production cross section in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at √𝑠=13 TeV

The production cross section of inclusive J/ψ pairs in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is measured with ALICE. The measurement is performed for J/ψ in the rapidity interval 2.5 < y < 4.0 and for transverse momentum p T > 0. The production cross section of inclusive J/ψ pairs is reported to be 10.3 ±2.3(stat.) ±1.3(syst.) nb in this kinematic interval. The contribution from nonprompt J/ψ (i.e., originated from beauty-hadron decays) to the inclusive sample is evaluated. The effective double-parton scattering cross section is computed, neglecting the single-parton scattering contribution.

Entanglement of elastic and inelastic scattering

The entanglement properties of systems in which elastic and inelastic reactions occur in projectile-target interactions is studied. A new measure of entanglement, the scattering entropy, based on the unitarity of the S matrix (probability conservation), is suggested. Using simple models for both low- and high-energy interactions, the amount of entanglement is found to track with the strength of the inelastic interaction. Here, the familiar example of the classical “black disk,” or total absorption, model is found to correspond to maximum entanglement. An analysis of high-energy pp scattering data shows that entanglement is near maximum for laboratory energies greater than about 1 GeV, showing that the total absorption model is a reasonable starting point for understanding the data.

A = 3 ( e , e ' ) x B ≥ 1 cross-section ratios and the isospin structure of short-range correlations

We study the relation between measured high-x B , high-Q 2 , helium-3 to tritium, (e,e') inclusive-scattering cross-section ratios and the relative abundance of high-momentum neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs in three-body (A=3) nuclei. In this study, analysis of this data using a simple pair-counting cross-section model suggested a much smaller np/pp ratio than previously measured in heavier nuclei, questioning our understanding of A=3 nuclei and, by extension, all other nuclei. Here we examine this finding using spectral-function-based cross-section calculations, with both an ab initio A=3 spectral function and effective Generalized Contact Formalism (GCF) spectral functions using different nucleon-nucleon interaction models. The ab initio calculation agrees with the data, showing good understanding of the structure of A=3 nuclei. An 8% uncertainty on the simple pair-counting model, as implied by the difference between it and the ab initio calculation, gives a factor of 5 uncertainty in the extracted np/pp ratio. Thus we see no evidence for the claimed "unexpected structure in the high-momentum wavefunction for hydrogen-3 and helium-3."

Borexino and general neutrino interactions

We derive constraints on all possible general neutrino-electron interactions (scalar, vector, pseudo-scalar, axial-vector and tensor) using the recent real time Borexino event rate measurements of pp, pep and Be7 solar neutrinos. Some of the limits improve from TEXONO and CHARM-II for incoming electron and muon neutrinos while the rest remains weaker for Borexino and those for the tau flavor are the first ones. Future improvements by next-generation solar neutrino experiments are also studied. The limits extend the physics reach of solar neutrino measurements to TeV-scale physics. Finally, the different properties of the new interactions for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos are discussed.

Study of the lineshape of the χ c1 (3872) state

A study of the lineshape of the χ c1 (3872) state is made using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb –1 collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. Candidate χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) mesons from b-hadron decays are selected in the J/ψπ + π – decay mode. Describing the lineshape with a Breit-Wigner function, the mass splitting between the χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) states, Δm, and the width of the χ c1 (3872) state, Γ BW , are determined to be Δm=185.598 ± 0.067 ± 0.068 MeV, Γ BW = 1.39 ± 0.24 ± 0.10 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using a Flatté-inspired model, the mode and full width at half maximum of the lineshape are determined to be mode = 3871.69+0.00+0.05 – 0.04–0.13 MeV, FWHM=0.22 +0.07+0.11–0.06–0.13 MeV. An investigation of the analytic structure of the Flatté amplitude reveals a pole structure, which is compatible with a quasibound D 0 D¯ *0 state but a quasivirtual state is still allowed at the level of 2 standard deviations.

Two-neutrino double-𝛽 decay in pionless effective field theory from a Euclidean finite-volume correlation function

Two-neutrino double-β decay of certain nuclear isotopes is one of the rarest Standard Model processes observed in nature. Its neutrinoless counterpart is an exotic lepton-number nonconserving process that is widely searched to determine if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions. In order to connect the rate of these processes to the Standard Model and beyond the Standard Model interactions, it is essential that the corresponding nuclear matrix elements are constrained reliably from theory. Lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) and low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) are expected to play an essential role in constraining the matrix element of the two-nucleon subprocess, which could in turn provide the input into ab initio nuclear-structure calculations in larger isotopes. Focusing on the two-neutrino process $nn\rightarrow pp(ee\bar{v}_{e}\bar{v}_e)$, the amplitude is constructed in this work in pionless EFT at next-to-leading order, demonstrating the emergence of a renormalization-scale independent amplitude and the absence of any new low-energy constant at this order beyond those present in the single-weak process. Most importantly, it is shown how a LQCD four-point correlation function in Euclidean and finite-volume spacetime can be used to constrain the Minkowski infinite-volume amplitude in the EFT. The same formalism is provided for the related single-weak process, which is an input to the double-β decay formalism. The LQCD-EFT matching procedure outlined for the double-weak amplitude paves the road toward constraining the two-nucleon matrix element entering the neutrinoless double-β decay amplitude with a light Majorana neutrino.

Measurement of differential t t ¯ production cross sections using top quarks at large transverse momenta in p p collisions at s = 13 TeV

A measurement is reported of differential top quark pair (${t\bar{t}}$) production cross sections, where top quarks are produced at large transverse momenta. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC are from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement uses events where at least one top quark decays as t$ \to $Wb $ \to q\bar{q}'b$ and is reconstructed as a large-radius jet with transverse momentum in excess of 400 GeV. The second top quark is required to decay either in a similar way, or leptonically, as inferred from a reconstructed electron or muon, a bottom quark jet, and a missing transverse momentum due to the undetected neutrino. The cross section is extracted as a function of kinematic variables of individual top quarks or of the ${t\bar{t}}$ system. The results are presented at the particle level, within a region of phase space close to that of the experimental acceptance, and at the parton level, and are compared to various theoretical models. In both decay channels the observed absolute cross sections are significantly lower than the predictions from theory, while the normalized differential measurements are well described.

Atmospheric neutrinos in next-generation xenon and argon dark matter experiments

In this work, we study the sensitivity of future xenon- and argon-based dark matter and neutrino detection experiments to low-energy atmospheric neutrinos. Not accounting for experimental backgrounds, the primary obstacle for identifying nuclear recoils induced by atmospheric neutrinos in xenon is the tail of the electron recoil distribution due to pp solar neutrinos. We use the NEST code to model the solar and atmospheric neutrino signals in a xenon detector and find that an exposure of 700 tonne-years will produce a 5σ detection of atmospheric neutrinos. We explore the effect of different detector properties and find that a sufficiently long electron lifetime is essential to the success of such a measurement.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the b b ¯ b b ¯ final state using p p collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for resonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented. The analysis uses 126 fb -1 -139 fb -1 of pp collision data at √s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is divided into two channels, targeting Higgs boson decays which are reconstructed as pairs of small-radius jets or as individual large-radius jets. Spin-0 and spin-2 benchmark signal models are considered, both of which correspond to resonant HH production via gluon-gluon fusion. The data are consistent with Standard Model predictions. Upper limits are set on the production cross section times branching ratio to Higgs boson pairs of a new resonance in the mass range from 251 GeV to 5 TeV.

Extraction of low-energy constants of single- and double-β decays from lattice QCD: A sensitivity analysis

Lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) has the promise of constraining low-energy constants (LECs) of nuclear effective field theories (EFTs) from first-principles calculations that incorporate the dynamics of quarks and gluons. Given the Euclidean and finite-volume nature of LQCD outputs, complex mappings are developed in recent years to obtain the Minkowski and infinite-volume counterparts of LQCD observables. In particular, as LQCD is moving toward computing a set of important few-nucleon matrix elements at the physical values of the quark masses, it is important to investigate whether the anticipated precision of LQCD spectra and matrix elements will be sufficient to guarantee tighter constraints on the relevant LECs than those already obtained from phenomenology, considering the nontrivial mappings involved. With a focus on the leading-order LECs of the pionless EFT, L 1,A and $g$$^{NN}_{v}$, which parametrize, respectively, the strength of the isovector axial two-body current in a single-β decay (and other related processes such pp fusion), and of the isotensor contact two-body operator in the neutrinoless double-β decay within the light neutrino exchange scenario, the expected uncertainty on future extractions of L 1,A and $g$$^{NN}_{v}$ are examined using synthetic data at the physical values of the quark masses. It is observed that achieving small uncertainties in L 1,A will be challenging, and (sub)percent-level precision in the two-nucleon spectra and matrix elements is essential in reducing the uncertainty on this LEC compared to the existing constraints. On the other hand, the short-distance coupling of the neutrinoless double-β decay, $g$$^{NN}_{v}$, is shown to be less sensitive to uncertainties on both LQCD energies and the matrix element, and can likely be constrained with percent-level precision in the upcoming LQCD calculations.

Measurements of jet observables sensitive to $\textit{b}$-quark fragmentation in $t\bar{t}$ events at the LHC with the ATLAS detector

Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of $\textit{b}$ quarks into $\textit{b}$ hadrons are measured using 36 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary $\textit{pp}$ interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the $\textit{b}$ hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with $\textit{p}$ values varying from 5 × 10 -4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from $e^+e^-$ collider experiments in which the $\textit{b}$ quarks originate from a color singlet $Z/γ^{\ast}$.

Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions from the production of Higgs bosons using the 𝜏⁢𝜏 final state

A study of anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of pp collisions at the LHC of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The study uses Higgs boson candidates produced mainly in gluon fusion or electroweak vector boson fusion at the LHC that subsequently decay to a pair of 𝜏 leptons. Matrix-element and machine-learning techniques were employed in a search for anomalous interactions. The results are combined with those from the four-lepton and two-photon decay channels to yield the most stringent constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to date. The pure 𝐶⁢𝑃-odd scenario of the Higgs boson coupling to gluons is excluded at 2.4 standard deviations. The results are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Measurement of Ω c 0 baryon production and branching-fraction ratio BR ( Ω c 0 → Ω - e + ν e ) / BR ( Ω c 0 → Ω - π + ) in p p collisions at s = 13 TeV

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < p T < 12 GeV=c. The branching-fraction ratio BR($Ω^0_c$ → $Ω$ - e + ν e )/BR($Ω^0_c$→ Ω - π + ) is measured to be 1.12 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.27 (syst). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented

Search for pair-produced vectorlike quarks coupling to light quarks in the lepton plus jets final state using 13 TeV p p collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks (VLQs) that each decay into a W boson and a light quark. This study focuses on events where one W boson decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The search analyzed 140 fb -1 of pp collision data with $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 during run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The final state is characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, multiple small-radius jets, and a single large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a boosted W boson. With higher center-of-mass energy and integrated luminosity than in the run 1 search, and improved analysis tools, this analysis excludes VLQs (Q) with masses below 1530 GeV at 95% confidence level for the branching ratio $\mathscr{B}$⁡(Q →W⁢q) =1, an improvement of 840 GeV on the previous ATLAS limit.

Particle production as a function of charged-particle flattenicity in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV. Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, 2.8 < 𝜂 < 5.1 and −3.7 < 𝜂 < −1.7. According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger 𝑝 T due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to 𝑝 T = 20 GeV/⁢𝑐. The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |𝜂| < 1. The measured 𝑝 T distributions, average 𝑝 T , kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using pythia 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the 𝑝 T -spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate 𝑝 T (2 < 𝑝 T < 8 GeV/𝑐), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher 𝑝 T . The results are qualitatively described by pythia, and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator.

Method to simultaneously facilitate all jet physics tasks

Machine learning has become an essential tool in jet physics. Due to their complex, high-dimensional nature, jets can be explored holistically by neural networks in ways that are not possible manually. However, innovations in all areas of jet physics are proceeding in parallel. We show that specially constructed machine learning models trained for a specific jet classification task can improve the accuracy, precision, or speed of all other jet physics tasks. This is demonstrated by training on a particular multiclass generation and classification task and then using the learned representation for different generation and classification tasks, for datasets with a different (full) detector simulation, for jets from a different collision system ($pp$ versus $ep$), for generative models, for likelihood ratio estimation, and for anomaly detection. We consider our omnilearn approach thus as a jet-physics foundation model. It is made publicly available for use in any area where state-of-the-art precision is required for analyses involving jets and their substructure.

Pump depletion and the Raman gap in ignition-scale plasmas

Laser-plasma instabilities under ignition conditions for direct-drive inertial confinement fusion are studied using two-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations with a combination of in-plane (PP) and out-of-the-plane (SP) lasers. The results show that stimulated Raman side scattering can induce significant pump depletion and form a gap in the Raman scattered light spectra that have been observed in experiments.
