International Intercomparison for Nuclear Accident Dosimetry Using Godiva-IV

During the week of August 22, 2022, Integral Experiment Request (IER) 538, an international blind intercomparison for nuclear accident dosimetry (NAD) exercise, was completed using the Godiva-IV critical assembly at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) located in the Device Assembly Facility (DAF) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). This exercise builds upon a series of experiments that include the characterization the radiation fields around Godiva (IER-147) and Flattop (IER-252) and follow up intercomparisons of dosimetry around both Godiva IV and Flattop (IER-148 and IER-253, respectively). The participants consisted of seven Department of Energy laboratories and one laboratory each from the US Navy, United Kingdom, and France. The participants of the exercise were Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL); Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL); Sandia National Laboratory (SNL); Savannah River Site (SRS); Hanford Site, Missions Support and Test Services (MSTS); Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12); Naval Dosimetry Center (NDC); Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE); and Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN). MSTS dosimeters were included in the irradiations but not reported for evaluation. This report primarily discusses the performance of the 24 hour results submitted by participants, though available final results are briefly discussed. Information for each irradiation performed is provided for participating laboratories to produce their own final report which will be incorporated into the CED-4a report.

IER-501 CED-3b: Experiment Execution Summary for the Pulsed-Neutron Die-Away Experimental Testbed for Thermal Scattering Law Benchmarks (PNDA)

This report summarizes the experiments done for IER-501, a testbed for pulsed-neutron die-away (PNDA) experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The PNDA experiments were conducted in two separate two-day campaigns: one campaign for high-density polyethylene and another for Lucite. All experiments were performed at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. They will become high-quality benchmarks that serve to optimize and validate thermal neutron scattering laws (TSLs), which are high priority nuclear data for the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP). The report presents the PNDA design and its equipment, and it documents the experimental die-away curves. It presents the characterization measurements that have been performed to-date. Importantly, mass spectrometry measurements to determine sample impurities were not yet completed. These will be included in the final benchmark. The report gives the fitted decay constants for the die-away curves of each target sample. It also provides the data for the die-away curves in the appendices. The HDPE experiments examined twelve targets of varying size. The Lucite measurements included ten targets of varying size. Experimenters in the campaign were Daniel Siefman, William Zywiec, and Ruby Araj.

Flattop Benchmark CED-2 (IER-423)

The final design for the Flattop HEU Core Benchmark is presented in this report. Physical measurements will be performed on Flattop components using modern instruments and techniques to define uncertainties necessary to meet contemporary ICSBEP standards. A preliminary re-evaluation of ICSBEP HMF-0028 (Flattop HEU Core) led to the development of IER-423 CED-1, wherein total relative uncertainties in $k_{eff}$ were provided based on a new detailed model. The estimated uncertainty on the total uncertainty is +100%/-0%, given a lack of documented uncertainties on mass, dimensions, and densities of predominantly the natural uranium (NU) and highly enriched uranium (HEU) components.

UPF and Y-12 Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) Radiation Testing Report

This report documents the experimental conditions and results for the testing of the Mirion Technologies CAAS-3S Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) for the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) and Uranium Processing Facility (UPF). The testing was conducted at the Godiva IV Burst Reactor at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) during the week of January 11, 2021. The testing was conducted in accordance with 25774-QL-POA-JR00-00002-VDE-27.0, CAAS-3S Radiation Testing of Cabinet Components Test Plan. The tests subjected the CAAS-3S system to intense and short duration mixed neutron and gamma radiation fields and to high integrated radiation doses. The purpose of the test was to environmentally qualify various CAAS-3S components in a radiation environment. Successful completion of the tests was predicated on the collaborative efforts of several organizations. Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) provided dosimetry to estimate photon and neutron dose. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) manages the NCERC facility, operated the Godiva IV reactor, and provided field support for CAAS-3S placement and communications interface for data acquisition systems supplied by Mirion Technologies. Throughout the test campaign, Y-12 and UPF personnel provided technical support in determining changes to the test schedule, as needed, interpretation of the results, and comparison between the measured dosimetry data and predicted results. Throughout the test campaign, Mirion personnel provided technical support in the operation of the CAAS-3S system itself.

IER 268 CED-3b Report

The goal of IER 268 was to collect information from the operation of the Godiva IV super-prompt critical assembly to support multi-physics modeling efforts. There were two types of systems deployed. One was a Photo-Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) system which used the reflection of laser light on the surface of the Godiva IV core. The other consisted of an MHD 240 detector with two other detectors (an MHD-241 and an Eljen EJ-325A) used for reference as the MHD-240 detector was moved. The collection is referred to as the MHD Detector in the narrative log. There were two types of Godiva operations performed to gather data. A series of super-prompt critical bursts were performed and data collected on both systems, tied to a common trigger. Separately, a series of delayed critical operations at various power levels was performed for a combination of MHD detector distances from Godiva and the presence and absence of a shield in the line of sight between Godiva and the MHD detector. This data was collected to determine the contribution of room return during the burst measurements.

Specification of EBR-II Gamma Scan Data from the Precision Gamma Scanner

The gamma scan data stored in the FIPD was originally measured using the Precision Gamma Scanner (PGS) at the Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This system was originally manufactured in 1971 (when the facilities, now at INL, were operated by Argonne National Laboratory) and was upgraded on several occasions. It consists of a germanium gamma ray detector (the exact nature of which changed over time as technology improved), a variable-slit collimator that blocks the view of gamma emissions from all but the selected area of the target, and a computer-controlled system for translating a sample past the slit and logging the data.

High Intensity Gamma Ray Source Scintillation Attenuation Spectrometer and Filter Stack Monoenergetic Calibration

The Laser-Based X-ray Radiographic Imaging team at Los Alamos National Lab is looking for a monoenergetic MeV X-ray source to both verify our Monte Carlo N-particle simulations of detector performance and calibrate the instruments for future measurements. Funded by the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, our overall goal is to improve the radiographic quality and reliability of laser-based X-ray sources for deployment at both dynamic and static radiography facilities. Laser-based X-ray sources have demonstrated smaller spot sizes to current electron accelerator based sources. The smaller laser spot size leads to significantly improved resolution.

Ion Mobility – Mass Spectrometry Rapid Imaging of Special Nuclear Materials

Robot Nose will use new fast data throughput methods and experience with laser microfocus to dramatically improve the speed and spatial resolution of an established instrument, making it a useful tool for imaging special nuclear materials (SNM). Mass spectrometry imaging instruments have traditionally been too slow and mass alone is generally an insufficient measurement for organic analyses. This situation was markedly improved by Ionwerks Inc., who pioneered the combination of ion mobility with mass spectrometry imaging. In 2D mobility-mass plots, clearly identifiable trend lines can be selected and reduced to 1D mass spectra without isobaric interferences. This is a major advantage over other imaging mass spectrometers that generally cannot distinguish isobars without custom-built lasers or high voltage accelerators. Special nuclear material (SNM) contains substantial fissile isotopes, particularly 233U, 235U, and 239Pu. A complete forensic analysis of SNM therefore requires quantitative isotopic measurement – often through some form of mass spectrometry. SNM contaminated with inclusions such as pollen grains can help identify its prior locations. The project team is presently working on an approach to allow rapid screening of 1-3 cm diameter thin samples of such material.
