Neutral Silicon-Vacancy Centers in Diamond via Photoactivated Itinerant Carriers

Neutral silicon-vacancy (Si-V 0 ) centers in diamond are promising candidates for quantum network applications because of their exceptional optical properties and spin coherence. However, the stabilization of Si-V 0 centers requires careful Fermi-level engineering of the diamond host material, making further technological development challenging. Here, we show that Si-V 0 centers can be efficiently stabilized by photoactivated itinerant carriers. Even in this nonequilibrium configuration, the resulting Si-V 0 centers are stable enough to allow for resonant optical excitation and optically detected magnetic resonance. Furthermore, our results pave the way for on-demand generation of Si-V 0 centers as well as other emerging quantum defects in diamond.

Neutral-current neutrino scattering from the deuteron

Neutral-current neutrino scattering from the deuteron leading to proton-neutron final states is considered using an approach that incorporates relativistic dynamics and consequently provides robust modeling at relatively high energies and momenta. In this work the focus is placed on the fully exclusive reaction where both the proton and neutron in the final state are assumed to be detected. Accordingly, the incident neutrino energy, the neutrino scattering angle and the scattered neutrino's energy can all be reconstructed. It is shown that for specific choices of kinematics the reaction proceeds mainly via scattering from the proton, while for other choices of kinematics it proceeds mainly from the neutron. Specific asymmetries are introduced to focus on these attributes. Measurements in both regions have the potential to yield valuable information on the nucleon's electroweak form factors at momentum transfers up to a (GeV/c)$^2$. In particular, the cross sections are shown to be very sensitive to the isoscalar axial-vector form factor, and sensitive but less so to the magnetic strangeness form factor. Comparisons with other reactions, specifically charge-changing neutrino reactions and both parity-conserving and -violating electron scattering, have the potential to provide new ways to test the Standard Model.

Comparing event generator predictions and ab initio calculations of ν- 12 C neutral-current quasielastic scattering at 1 GeV

The measurement of neutrino oscillations and exotic physics searches are important parts of the physics program in the near future, with new state-of-the-art experiments planned within the next decade. Future and modern experiments in these fields will make use of nuclear targets. Event generators (EGs) are software used in the analysis of neutrino oscillation experiments. EGs are used to predict kinematic observables for a range of neutrino energies. These simulations make use of simple models of nucleon dynamics. As such, they may fail to capture features of more rigorous theoretical calculations. This work compares EG performance to nuclear theory calculations by comparing observables generated in the two frameworks. We provide a common set of definitions between theory and experiment and assess the adequacy of the implementation of two nuclear physics models in EG simulations. Neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) scattering events for neutrinos and antineutrinos on a 12 C target are simulated with a specific EG, NEUT, used by the T2K experiment for its analysis. The simulated cross sections are compared to analytic calculations from nuclear theory within the factorization scheme. We compare the NEUT implementation of two different models on nuclear spectral functions: the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) and the correlated basis spectral function (CBF) to analytic calculations of the same models in the factorization scheme. For both nuclear physics models, we compare the appearance of features in the distributions relevant to experimental analyses. The peak of the cross section dσ/(dΩ dω) is consistent in energy transfer, ω, for RFG and CBF simulations. Qualitatively, the shape of the simulated distribution is similar to the one obtained through theory calculations; however, there are some discrepancies between the theory calculations and the NEUT simulation. While the EG simulations and analytic calculations with the same model of nuclear dynamics show similar overall features, there are still differences between the two. These results demonstrate the importance of benchmarking EGs so their nuclear physics implementations can be improved for the analysis of future experiments.

Search for heavy neutral leptons decaying into muon-pion pairs in the MicroBooNE detector

We present upper limits on the production of heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying to $\mu \pi$ pairs using data collected with the MicroBooNE liquid-argon time projection chamber (TPC) operating at Fermilab. This search is the first of its kind performed in a liquid-argon TPC. We use data collected in 2017 and 2018 corresponding to an exposure of $2.0 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam, which produces mainly muon neutrinos with an average energy of $\approx 800$ MeV. HNLs with higher mass are expected to have a longer time-of-flight to the liquid-argon TPC than Standard Model neutrinos. The data are therefore recorded with a dedicated trigger configured to detect HNL decays that occur after the neutrino spill reaches the detector. We set upper limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the element $\lvert U_{\mu4}\rvert^2$ of the extended PMNS mixing matrix in the range $\lvert U_{\mu4}\rvert^2<(6.6$-$0.9)\times 10^{-7}$ for Dirac HNLs and $\lvert U_{\mu4}\rvert^2<(4.7$-$0.7)\times 10^{-7}$ for Majorana HNLs, assuming HNL masses between $260$ and $385$ MeV and $\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{\tau 4}\rvert^2 = 0$.

Search for flavor-changing neutral-current couplings between the top quark and the Z boson with proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for flavor-changing neutral-current couplings between a top quark, an up or charm quark, and a $Z$ boson is presented, using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analyzed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The search targets both single-top-quark events produced as $gq$ → $tZ$ (with $q$ = $u, c$) and top-quark-pair events, with one top quark decaying through the $t$ → $Zq$ channel. The analysis considers events with three leptons (electrons or muons), a $b$-tagged jet, possible additional jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data are found to be consistent with the background-only hypothesis and 95% confidence-level limits on the $t$ → $Zq$ branching ratios, assuming only tensor operators of the Standard Model effective field theory framework contribute to the $tZq$ vertices. These are 6.2 x 10 -5 (13 x 10 -5 ) for $t$ → $Zu$ ($t$ → $Zc$) for a left-handed $tZq$ coupling, and 6.6 x 10 -5 (12 x 10 -5 ) in the case of a right-handed coupling. These results are interpreted as 95% CL upper limits on the strength of the corresponding couplings, yielding limits for |${C}^{(13)*}_{uW}$| and |${C}^{(13)*}_{uB}$| (|${C}^{(31)}_{uW}$| and |${C}^{(31)}_{uB}$|) of 0.15 (0.16), and limits for |${C}^{(23)*}_{uW}$| and |${C}^{(23)*}_{uB}$| (|${C}^{(32)}_{uW}$| and |${C}^{(32)}_{uB}$|) of 0.22 (0.21), assuming a new-physics energy scale Λ NP of 1 TeV.

Measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic cross section using atmospheric neutrinos in the SK-Gd experiment

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) water Cherenkov detector. In June 2020, SK began a new experimental phase, named SK-Gd, by loading 0.011% by mass of gadolinium into the ultrapure water of the SK detector. The introduction of gadolinium to ultrapure water has the effect of improving the neutron-tagging efficiency. Using a 552.2 day dataset from August 2020 to June 2022, we measure the NCQE cross section to be 0.74 ± 0.22 ( stat ) − 0.15 + 0.85 ( syst ) × 10 − 38 cm 2 / oxygen in the energy range from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, which is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino-flux-averaged theoretical NCQE cross section and the measurement in the SK pure-water phase within the uncertainties. Furthermore, we compare the models of the nucleon-nucleus interactions in water and find that the binary cascade model and the Liège intranuclear cascade model provide a somewhat better fit to the observed data than the Bertini cascade model. Since the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen NCQE reactions are one of the main backgrounds in the search for diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), these new results will contribute to future studies—and the potential discovery—of the DSNB in SK. Search for a heavy neutral lepton that mixes predominantly with the tau neutrino

We report a search for a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) that mixes predominantly with ν τ . The search utilizes data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + e − collider. The data sample was collected at and just below the center-of-mass energies of the ϒ ( 4 S ) and ϒ ( 5 S ) resonances and has an integrated luminosity of 915 fb − 1 , corresponding to ( 836 ± 12 ) × 10 6 e + e − → τ + τ − events. We search for production of the HNL (denoted N ) in the decay τ − → π − N followed by its decay via N → μ + μ − ν τ . The search focuses on the parameter-space region in which the HNL is long-lived, so that the μ + μ − originate from a common vertex that is significantly displaced from the collision point of the KEKB beams. Consistent with the expected background yield, one event is observed in the data sample after application of all the event-selection criteria. We report limits on the mixing parameter of the HNL with the τ neutrino as a function of the HNL mass. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying in the CMS muon system is presented. A data sample is used corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV , recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Decay products of long-lived HNLs could interact with the shielding materials in the CMS muon system and create hadronic and electromagnetic showers detected in the muon chambers. This distinctive signature provides a unique handle to search for HNLs with masses below 4 GeV and proper decay lengths of the order of meters. The signature is sensitive to HNL couplings to all three generations of leptons. Candidate events are required to contain a prompt electron or muon originating from a vertex on the beam axis and a displaced shower in the muon chambers. No significant deviations from the standard model background expectation are observed. In the electron (muon) channel, the most stringent limits to date are set for HNLs in the mass range of 2.1–3.0 (1.9–3.3) GeV, reaching mixing matrix element squared values as low as 8.6 ( 4.6 ) × 10 - 6 .

Constraints on light dark sector particles from lifetime difference of heavy neutral mesons

Heavy meson decays with missing energy in the final state offer interesting avenues to search for light invisible new physics such as dark matter (DM). In this context, we show that such new physics (NP) interactions also affect lifetime difference in neutral meson-antimeson mixing. We consider general dimension-six effective quark interactions involving a pair of DM particles and calculate their contributions to lifetime difference in beauty and charm meson systems. We use the latest data on mixing observables to constrain the relevant effective operators. We find that lifetime differences provide novel and complementary flavor constraints compared to those obtained from heavy meson decays. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Searching for heavy neutral leptons at a future muon collider

As the planning stages for a high energy muon collider enter a more concrete era, an important question arises as to what new physics could be uncovered. A TeV-scale muon collider is also a vector boson fusion (VBF) factory with a very clean background, and as such it is a promising environment to look for new physics that couples to the electroweak (EW) sector. In this paper, we explore the ability of a future TeV-scale muon collider to search for Majorana and Dirac heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) produced via EW bosons. Employing a model-independent, conservative approach, we present an estimation of the production and decay rate of HNLs over a mass range between 200 GeV and 9.5 TeV in two benchmark collider proposals with s = 3 , 10 TeV, as well as an estimation of the dominant Standard Model (SM) background. We find that exclusion limits for the mixing between the HNLs and SM neutrinos can be as low as O ( 10 − 6 ) . Additionally, we demonstrate that a TeV-scale muon collider allows for the ability to discriminate between Majorana and Dirac type HNLs for a large range of mixing values. Mass reconstruction of heavy neutral leptons from stopped mesons

Heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), depending on their mass and mixing, can be efficiently produced in meson decays from the target or absorber in short- to medium-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments, leaving detectable signals through their decays inside the neutrino detectors. We show that the currently running ICARUS experiment at Fermilab can reconstruct the HNL mass and explore new HNL parameter space in the mass range of 70–190 MeV. The mass reconstruction is enabled by two ingredients: (i) simple two-body kinematics of HNL production from stopped kaon decays at the NuMI absorber, followed by HNL decay into a charged-lepton pair and neutrino at the detector, and (ii) high resolution of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) detectors in reconstructing final state particles. Our mass reconstruction method is robust under realistic energy resolution and angular smearing of the charged leptons, and is applicable to any LArTPC detector. We also discuss the synergy between ICARUS and future facilities like DUNE near detector and PIP-II beam dump in probing the HNL parameter space. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Search for heavy neutral resonances decaying to tau lepton pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral gauge bosons (𝑍′) decaying into a pair of tau leptons is performed in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV at the CERN LHC. The data were collected with the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The observations are found to be in agreement with the expectation from standard model processes. Limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the 𝑍′ production cross section and its branching fraction to tau lepton pairs for a range of 𝑍′ boson masses. For a narrow resonance in the sequential standard model scenario, a 𝑍′ boson with a mass below 3.5 TeV is excluded. This is the most stringent limit to date from this type of search.

Deterministic Fast Scrambling with Neutral Atom Arrays

Fast scramblers are dynamical quantum systems that produce many-body entanglement on a timescale that grows logarithmically with the system size N. Here, we propose and investigate a family of deterministic, fast scrambling quantum circuits realizable in near-term experiments with arrays of neutral atoms. We show that three experimental tools—nearest-neighbor Rydberg interactions, global single-qubit rotations, and shuffling operations facilitated by an auxiliary tweezer array—are sufficient to generate nonlocal interaction graphs capable of scrambling quantum information using only O(logN) parallel applications of nearest-neighbor gates. These tools enable direct experimental access to fast scrambling dynamics in a highly controlled and programmable way and can be harnessed to produce highly entangled states with varied applications.

Precision Determination of the Neutral Weak Form Factor of Ca 48

In this work, we report a precise measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry $A_{\rm PV}$ in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. We measure $A_{\rm PV} =2668\pm 106\ {\rm (stat)}\pm 40\ {\rm (syst)}$ parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor $F_{\rm W} (q=0.8733$ fm$^{-1}) = 0.1304 \pm 0.0052 \ {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.0020\ {\rm (syst)}$ and the charge minus the weak form factor $F_{\rm ch} - F_{\rm W} = 0.0277\pm 0.0055$. The resulting neutron skin thickness $R_n-R_p=0.121 \pm 0.026\ {\rm (exp)} \pm 0.024\ {\rm (model)}$~fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. The combined CREX and PREX results will have implications for future energy density functional calculations and on the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter.

Deep Electric Field Predictions by Drift-Reduced Braginskii Theory with Plasma-Neutral Interactions Based on Experimental Images of Boundary Turbulence

We present 2-dimensional turbulent electric field calculations via physics-informed deep learning consistent with (i) drift-reduced Braginskii theory under the framework of an axisymmetric fusion plasma with purely toroidal field and (ii) experimental estimates of the fluctuating electron density and temperature on open field lines obtained from analysis of gas puff imaging of a discharge on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. The inclusion of effects from the locally puffed atomic helium on particle and energy sources within the reduced plasma turbulence model are found to strengthen correlations between the electric field and electron pressure. The neutrals are also directly associated with broadening the distribution of turbulent field amplitudes and increasing ${\bf E \times B}$ shearing rates. As a result, this demonstrates a novel approach in plasma experiments by solving for nonlinear dynamics consistent with partial differential equations and data without encoding explicit boundary nor initial conditions.

Neutral Silicon Vacancy Centers in Undoped Diamond via Surface Control

Neutral silicon vacancy centers (SiV 0 ) in diamond are promising candidates for quantum applications; however, stabilizing SiV 0 requires high-purity, boron-doped diamond, which is not a readily available material. Here, we demonstrate an alternative approach via chemical control of the diamond surface. We use low-damage chemical processing and annealing in a hydrogen environment to realize reversible and highly stable charge state tuning in undoped diamond. The resulting SiV 0 centers display optically detected magnetic resonance and bulklike optical properties. Controlling the charge state tuning via surface termination offers a route for scalable technologies based on SiV 0 centers, as well as charge state engineering of other defects.

First Observation of a Doubly Charged Tetraquark and Its Neutral Partner

A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays $B^0$ → $\overline{D}$ 0 $D_s^+$$π^–$ and $B^+$ → $D^–$$D_s^+$$π^+$, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908 ± 0.011 ± 0.020 GeV and widths of 0.136 ± 0.023 ± 0.013 GeV are observed, which decay to $D_s^+$$π^+$ and $D_s^+$$π^–$ respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [c$\overline{s}$u$\overline{d}$], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [c$\overline{s}$$\overline{u}$d] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity of 0 + , and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet.

Nuclear Modification Factor of Neutral Pions in the Forward and Backward Regions in p - Pb Collisions

The nuclear modification factor of neutral pions is measured in proton-lead collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector. The π 0 production cross section is measured differentially in transverse momentum (p T ) for 1.5 < p Τ < 10.0 GeV and in center-of-mass pseudorapidity (η c.m. ) regions 2.5 < η c.m. < 3.5 (forward) and -4.0 < η c.m .< -3.0 (backward) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The forward measurement shows a sizable suppression of π 0 production, while the backward measurement shows the first evidence of π 0 enhancement in proton-lead collisions at the LHC. Together, these measurements provide precise constraints on models of nuclear structure and particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions.
