HiMAT - A new approach to the design of highly maneuverable aircraft

Needed improvements in the maneuvering performance of combat aircraft appear to be possible through the simultaneous application of advances in various disciplines in such a way that they complement one another and magnify the benefits derived. The highly maneuverable aircraft technology (HiMAT) program is being conducted to investigate such multidisciplinary concepts. The program has three phases: preliminary studies, conceptual design studies, and the final design and construction of a test airplane. Work is now in the second phase. The test airplane will be a scaled model flown by a remotely piloted research vehicle technique. This paper outlines the HiMAT program and indicates the types of concepts being considered.

Land use classification in Bolivia

The Bolivian LANDSAT Program is an integrated, multidisciplinary project designed to provide thematic analysis of LANDSAT, Skylab, and other remotely sensed data for natural resource management and development in Bolivia, is discussed. Among the first requirements in the program is the development of a legend, and appropriate methodologies, for the analysis and classification of present land use based on landscape cover. The land use legend for Bolivia consists of approximately 80 categories in a hierarchical organization which may be collapsed for generalization, or expanded for greater detail. The categories, and their definitions, provide for both a graphic and textual description of the complex and diverse landscapes found in Bolivia, and are designed for analysis from LANDSAT and other remotely sensed data at scales of 1:1,000,000 and 1:250,000. Procedures and example products developed are described and illustrated, for the systematic analysis and mapping of present land use for all of Bolivia.

Spacelab science missions of the 1980's

The objectives and instrumentation of Spacelab missions planned for the 1980s are discussed. Initial flights will be multidisciplinary, serving to verify the performance of Spacelab subsystems and to demonstrate the capability of Spacelab to carry out broad-ranging research in a variety of fields. Further missions will use highly specialized payloads. Among these are the Atmospheres, Magnetospheres and Plasmas (AMPS) Payload, the Astronomy Spacelab Payload (ASP), including solar physics, stellar astronomy and high energy astrophysics variants, and the Spacelab Infrared Telescope Facility. The growing inventory of instruments developed for these missions will then be available for use in different combinations to meet the needs of individual mission objectives proposed by the international scientific community.

The first Spacelab mission

The purpose of Spacelab, an Orbiter-mounted NASA/ESA laboratory, is to include in the Space Transportation System (STS) a payload carrier with maximum flexibility to accommodate multidisciplinary scientific payloads. The major Spacelab configurations obtained by combination of two basic elements, the module and pallet, are described along with the anticipated program of experiments and payloads, and mission management general concept. The first Spacelab 7-day mission is scheduled for flight in the second half of 1980, with the primary objective being to verify system performance capabilities. Detailed attention is given to the payload mission management responsibilities for the first flight, including program control, science management, payload interfaces, integrated payload mission planning, integration requirements, payload specialist training, payload integration, launch site integration, payload flight/mission operations, and postmission activities. The Spacelab configuration (including the long module and one pallet) and the overall schedule for this mission are presented.

Sediment measurement in estuarine and coastal areas

A survey of uses of estuarine and coastal areas is given. Problems associated with these uses are discussed, and data needs for intelligent management of these valuable areas are outlined. Suspended sediment measurements are seen to be one of the greatest needs. To help understand the complexity of the problem, a brief discussion of sediment mechanics is given, including sediment sources, characteristics, and transport. The impact of sediment mechanics on its direct measurement (sampling and analysis) is indicated, along with recommendations for directly obtaining representative data. Indirect measurement of suspended sediment by remote sensors is discussed both theoretically and in the light of some recent experiences. The need for an integrated, multidisciplinary program to solve the problem of quantitatively measuring suspended sediment with remote sensors is stressed, and several important considerations of such a program and benefits to be derived therefrom are briefly addressed.

What's the use of land? (a secondary school social studies project)

The concept of a student land use survey was discussed with the curriculum development team of the Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado. In these discussions it soon became apparent that the curriculum potentials included much more than a classroom activity involving mapping the features on the ground in the area of study. A new flood control dam to be located in the area of Denver, Colorado, became the central topic in a program involving a wide variety of curriculum fields, such as mapmaking, local community history, physical geography, mathematics, and environmental studies. Consequently, a prototype of a multidisciplinary unit concept was developed for later incorporation by the Jefferson County curriculum team.

The present status of remote sensing in the United Nations, 8 April 1977

Problems arising from remote sensing of the earth by satellites have been the subject of indepth research and analysis by the United Nations. Every aspect of this multidisciplinary subject has been explored in more than 100 reports and papers published as UN documents dealing with all the implications of remote sensing: scientific, technological, institutional, political, economic, cultural, and legal. National, regional and international situations have been analyzed, and the General Assembly has passed resolutions requesting that the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space give a high priority to remote sensing. The identification and analysis of issues has been going on for several years, the objective being international agreement on general principles to guide nations in the conduct of their remote sensing activities.

Design representation and consistency maintenance needs

Two major issues of data base support for large-scale engineering design are considered. The first deals with the need to support multidisciplinary, hierarchical and interactive design without imposing a priori constraints on the sequence of design decisions. An abstract logical model of the data base capable of such support is outlined. The second issue deals with the role the data base must play in maintaining integrity and consistency among the data representing the emerging design. A tentative model implementing a number of consistency management functions is presented.

A methodology for selecting optimum organizations for space communities

This paper suggests that a methodology exists for selecting optimum organizations for future space communities of various sizes and purposes. Results of an exploratory study to identify an optimum hypothetical organizational structure for a large earth-orbiting multidisciplinary research and applications (R&A) Space Base manned by a mixed crew of technologists are presented. Since such a facility does not presently exist, in situ empirical testing was not possible. Study activity was, therefore, concerned with the identification of a desired organizational structural model rather than the empirical testing of it. The principal finding of this research was that a four-level project type 'total matrix' model will optimize the effectiveness of Space Base technologists. An overall conclusion which can be reached from the research is that application of this methodology, or portions of it, may provide planning insights for the formal organizations which will be needed during the Space Industrialization Age.
