A neuro-collision avoidance strategy for robot manipulators

The area of collision avoidance and path planning in robotics has received much attention in the research community. Our study centers on a combination of an artificial neural network paradigm with a motion planning strategy that insures safe motion of the Articulated Two-Link Arm with Scissor Hand System relative to an object. Whenever an obstacle is encountered, the arm attempts to slide along the obstacle surface, thereby avoiding collision by means of the local tangent strategy and its artificial neural network implementation. This combination compensates the inverse kinematics of a robot manipulator. Simulation results indicate that a neuro-collision avoidance strategy can be achieved by means of a learning local tangent method.

Manipulation strategies for massive space payloads

The industrial and environmental applications for robots with a relatively large workspace has increased significantly in the last few years. To accommodate the demands, the manipulator is usually designed with long, lightweight links that are inherently flexible. Ongoing research at Georgia Tech into the behavior and design of these flexible links is discussed.

Experimental verification of modified command shaping using a flexible manipulator

A brief discussion introduces the original input shaping method applied to a system with varying parameters. A change in parameters causes a vibration in the system and a modified command shaping technique is created to eliminate this unwanted motion. Using a two degree of freedom (DOF) flexible manipulator, experiments are conducted by varying perturbations to input trajectories to compare the modified method to a previously used adaptive proportional plus derivative (P.D.) control method. The control scheme that produces the smaller magnitude of resonant vibration at the first natural frequency of the robot is considered the more effective control method.

Controlled motion in an elastic world. Research project: Manipulation strategies for massive space payloads

The flexibility of the drives and structures of controlled motion systems are presented as an obstacle to be overcome in the design of high performance motion systems, particularly manipulator arms. The task and the measure of performance to be applied determine the technology appropriate to overcome this obstacle. Included in the technologies proposed are control algorithms (feedback and feed forward), passive damping enhancement, operational strategies, and structural design. Modeling of the distributed, nonlinear system is difficult, and alternative approaches are discussed. The author presents personal perspectives on the history, status, and future directions in this area.

Inertial-space disturbance rejection for robotic manipulators

The disturbance rejection control problem for a 6-DOF (degree of freedom) PUMA manipulator mounted on a 3-DOF platform is investigated. A control algorithm is designed to track the desired position and attitude of the end-effector in inertial space, subject to unknown disturbances in the platform axes. Conditions for the stability of the closed-loop system are derived. The performance of the controller is compared for step, sinusoidal, and random disturbances in the platform rotational axis and in the neighborhood of kinematic singularities.

Kinematic analysis of the ARID manipulator

The kinematic structure of the ARID manipulator lends itself to simple forward and inverse kinematics analysis. The purpose of this paper is to fully document and verify an existing analysis. The symbolic software package MATHEMATICA was used to produce and verify the equations presented here. In the analysis to follow, the standard Devenit-Hartenberg kinematic parameters of the ARID were employed.

A global path planning approach for redundant manipulators

A new approach for global path planning of redundant manipulators is proposed. It poses the path planning problem as a finite time nonlinear control problem. The solution is found by a Newton-Raphson type algorithm. This technique is capable of handling various goal task descriptions as well as incorporating both joint and task space constraints. The algorithm has shown promising preliminary results in planning joint path sequences for 3R and 4R planar robots to meet Cartesian tip tracking and goal endpoint planning. It is robust with respect to local path planning problems such as singularity considerations and local minimum problems. Repetitive joint path solutions for cyclic end-effector tasks are also generated. Eventual goals of this work include implementation on full spatial robots, as well as provision of an interface for supervisory input to aid in path planning for more complex problems.

Dynamic analysis to evaluate viscoelastic passive damping augmentation for the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System

The effectiveness of constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatment designs is evaluated separately as passive control measures for low frequency joint dominated modes and higher frequency boom flexure dominated modes using a NASTRAN finite element analysis. Passive damping augmentation is proposed which is based on a constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatment applied to the surface of the manipulators's flexible booms. It is pointed out that even the joint compliance dominated modes can be damped to some degree through appropriate design of the treatment.

Kinematic analysis of 7-DOF manipulators

This article presents a kinematic analysis of seven-degree-of-freedom serial link spatial manipulators with revolute joints. To uniquely determine the joint angles for a given end-effector position and orientation, the redundancy is parameterized by a scalar variable that defines the angle between the arm plane and a reference plane. The forward kinematic mappings from joint space to end-effector coordinates and arm angle and the augmented Jacobian matrix that gives end-effector and arm angle rates as functions of joint rates are presented. Conditions under which the augmented Jacobian becomes singular are also given and are shown to correspond to the arm being either at a kinematically singular configuration or at a nonsingular configuration for which the arm angle ceases to parameterize the redundancy.

Manipulation of upstream rotor leading edge vortex and its effects on counter rotating propeller noise

The leading edge vortex of a counter rotating propeller (CRP) model was altered by using shrouds and by turning the upstream rotors to a forward sweep configuration. Performance, flow, and acoustic data were used to determine the effect of vortex impingement on the noise signature of the CRP system. Forward sweep was found to eliminate the leading edge vortex of the upstream blades. Removal of the vortex had little effect on the tone noise at the forward and rear blade passing frequencies (BPF's) but significantly altered both the sound pressure level and directivity of the interaction tone which occurs at the sum of the two BPF's. A separate manipulation of the leading edge vortex performed by installing shrouds of various inlet length on the CRP verified that diverting the vortex path increases the noise level of the interaction tone. An unexpected link has been established between the interaction tone and the leading edge vortex-blade interaction phenomenon.

An experimental evaluation and comparison of explicit force control strategies for robotic manipulator

The authors present an experimental evaluation and comparison of basic strategies that have been proposed for force control of robot manipulators. This experimental review of force control methodologies is unique in its breadth. The commonality amongst the experiments has permitted the ability to objectively compare and contrast these strategies, and draw conclusions about the efficacy of each. The results support previous analysis and show the superiority of integral force control for force trajectory tracking.

Nonlinear modeling of a long flexible manipulator and control by inertial devices

The authors consider the modeling and control of a planar, long flexible manipulator that is representative of current space-based robotic arms. The arm is equipped with three actuators: 1) a shoulder motor; 2) a torque wheel at the tip; and 3) a proof-mass actuator at the tip. The goal is to investigate the potential use of inertial devices as control inputs for maneuvering tasks and vibration suppression. The parameters used for the inertial devices at the tip are comparable to those specified for the Mini-Mast facility at the Langley Research Center. A nonlinear distributed parameter model is obtained by the extended Hamilton principle. The associated eigenvalue/eigenfunction problem is solved and a finite-dimensional state space model is assembled. A preliminary design of a linear quadratic regulator is used, and computer simulation results illustrate the benefits of using the proposed actuators.

Safety issues of manipulator systems under computer control

An overview of the development test flight (DTF-1) mission is presented, and the system design, safety requirements, and safety features are described. The lessons that were learned during the design and early development stages are also presented. The DTF-1 mission objectives are to evaluate: the overall man-machine performance in zero G, Flight Telerobotic Service manipulator design, and workstation design, including handcontrollers and displays. The payload bay and aft flight deck elements, and computer control of the DTF-1 are described. Recommendations for developing and implementing a safety system are presented, and some design alternatives for the next space-qualified telerobotic system are suggested.

Real-time collision avoidance in teleoperated whole-sensitive robot arm manipulators

A hybrid robot teleoperation system is presented which makes use of the methodology of motion planning for whole-sensitive robots to assist the operator in generating collision-free motion in a master-slave robot arm manipulator system. The system combines operator commands with data from the sensitive skin to guarantee safe motion for the entire body of the robot arm. The arm avoids obstacles automatically and in real time and moves in a collision-free manner although no prior knowledge of the objects in the environment is available to the motion planning system and no constraints are imposed on the obstacle shapes. The operator is thus relieved of the task of providing safety of the robot arm and surrounding objects.

Linearization of manipulator dynamics using spatial operators

Linearized dynamics models for manipulators are useful in robot analysis, motion planning, and control applications. Techniques from the spatial operator algebra are used to obtain closed form operator expressions for two types of linearized dynamics models, the linearized inverse and forward dynamics models. Spatially recursive algorithms of O(n) and O(n-squared) complexity for the computation of the perturbation vector and coefficient matrices for the linearized inverse dynamics model are developed first. Subsequently, operator factorization and inversion identities are used to develop corresponding closed-form expressions for the linearized forward dynamics model (LFDM). Once again, these are used to develop algorithms of O(n) and O(n-squared) complexity for the computation of the perturbation vector and the coefficient matrices. The algorithms for the LFDM do not require the explicit computation of the mass matrix nor its numerical inversion and are also of lower complexity than the conventional O(n-cubed) algorithms.

Adaptive control of a Stewart platform-based manipulator

A joint-space adaptive control scheme for controlling noncompliant motion of a Stewart platform-based manipulator (SPBM) was implemented in the Hardware Real-Time Emulator at Goddard Space Flight Center. The six-degrees of freedom SPBM uses two platforms and six linear actuators driven by dc motors. The adaptive control scheme is based on proportional-derivative controllers whose gains are adjusted by an adaptation law based on model reference adaptive control and Liapunov direct method. It is concluded that the adaptive control scheme provides superior tracking capability as compared to fixed-gain controllers.

A testbed for research on manipulator-coupled active spacecraft

This paper describes a testbed developed to study control of manipulator-coupled spacecraft with active attitude control systems. Pre-design simulation studies are described that were used to size and design the experimental facility and plan testing programs. Results on the dynamics and control of this testbed are presented that were obtained from both simulations and experiments. Initial experimental results have been used to refine the simulators using output matching system identification. Results from this system identification are included in the form of comparisons between simulation and experiment time histories for various model parameter values. These show that the testbed is inherently nonlinear and that parameters, harmonic gear effectiveness, in particular, have appreciable effects on the dynamics.
