LISA technology department at JPL

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) project requires technology developments on many fronts. A physical understanding of the LISA subsystems is a precursor to tacjling the requirements needed to ensure a successful mission. This can only be achieved by developing the concepts in the lab prior to developing the payload. This poster presents updates on laboratory activities intended to prove the feasibility of measuring proof mass back reaction forces of less than 3fN/(square root)Hz at 1 mHz; the sensing of the proof mass position with in 2 nm/(square root)above the 3 mHz; and the resolution and accuracy of the phase-meter to better than 10 pm/(square root)Hz above the 3 mHz.

Use of the JPL Electronic Nose to detect leaks and spills in an enclosed environment

An electronic nose to be used as an air quality monitor in human habitats in space has been developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This device is capable of detecting, identifying and quantifying several organic and inorganic chemical species which might be present as contaminants in spacecraft air. The complete portable device, including sensors, electronics, and software for data analysis, has been extensively tested.

From AFF to CCNT : JPL's evolving family of multifunction constellation transceivers

This paper describes the profiles and requirements of the ST-3 and ST-5 missions, and discusses the unique technological challenges each of them presents. Bothe the AFF and CCNT trace their heritage to GPS receivers, using measurements of both RF carrier phase and a ranging code. They will operate, however, at very different frequency bands; the ADD at Ka-band, and the CCNT at S-band.

Project - line interaction implementing projects in JPL's Matrix

Can programmatic and line organizations really work interdependently, to accomplish their work as a community? Does the matrix produce a culture in which individuals take personal responsibility for both immediate mission success and long-term growth? What is the secret to making a matrix enterprise actually work? This paper will consider those questions, and propose that developing an effective project-line partnership demands primary attention to personal interactions among people. Many potential problems can be addressed by careful definition of roles, responsibilities, and work processes for both parts of the matrix -- and by deliberate and clear communication between project and line organizations and individuals.
