Presentation provides an overview of NREL's hydrogen market assessment analysis, which includes demand, supply, and financial analyses.
In this project, we seek to understand the impact of EV charging availability and charging behavior on regional travel demand, as well as the reciprocal impact of travel demand on the deployment of additional EV chargers, through simulation analysis. The focus on computational efficiency and extensibility in the development of the POLARIS and BEAM agent-based simulation engines allow for the efficient extension to Electric-Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and grid interaction simulation. Simulation systems for analyzing interactions between vehicle charging and travel demand have previously been implemented, but generally involve simplified representations of traveler behavior, vehicle energy consumption or both.
This presentation summarizes the objectives, approach, and findings of a 3-year project led by INL as part of DOE's SMART Mobility Laboratory Consortium. The presentation will be given to the general public via Zoom during the FY20 Vehicle Technologies Office Annual Merit Review on June 3, 2020.
Annual Merit review of the Smart Electric Vehicle Charging for a Reliable and Resilient Grid (RECHARGE) project. This project will demonstrate the value of smart charge management to reduce the impact of Electric Vehicles at Scale. Assess management of Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) charging at scale to avoid negative grid impacts, identify critical strategies and technologies, and enhance value for PEV / EVSE / grid stakeholders.

The commercial nuclear sector faces unprecedented financial challenges driven by low natural gas prices and subsidized renewables in a market that does not reward carbon-free baseload capacity. These circumstances, along with increasingly antiquated labor-centric operating models and analog technology, have forced the early closure of multiple nuclear facilities and placed a much larger population of nuclear stations at risk. Nuclear plant economic survival in current and forecasted market conditions requires an efficient and technology-centric operating model that harvests the native efficiencies of advanced technology. This is analogous to transformations that have occurred in other industries.
This presentation discusses the following key research questions: Where do we need on-route (or waypoint) and destination chargers, and how many? What is the impact of seasonal variations in both general road trips (e.g., Thanksgiving) and those related to recreational destinations (e.g., national parks)? Do we have appropriate electric grid ready along the routes? What equity implications would be worth considering?
The buildings and city streets we walk down are changing. Driven by various data-driven use cases, there is increased interest in networking and integrating lighting and other building systems (e.g., heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), security, scheduling) that were previously not internet-facing, and equipping them with sensors that collect information about their environment and the people that inhabit it. These data-enabled systems can potentially deliver improved occupant and resident experiences and help meet the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national energy and carbon reduction goals. Deploying connected devices new to being networked, however, is not without its challenges. This paper explores tools available to system designers and integrators that facilitate a cybersecurity landscape assessment – or more specifically the identification of threats, vulnerabilities, and adversarial behaviors that could be used against these networked systems. These assessments can help stakeholders shift security prioritization proactively toward the beginning of the development process.
This research report describes the preparatory efforts to perform a BCA on an expanded set of digital upgrades envisioned for implementation at the Luminant?s Comanche Peak nuclear plant. It captures efforts to scope the digital upgrade effort to enable performance of the BCA. The final BCA will be the subject of a subsequent report. LWRS pilot research in this area is intended to enable this effort and to provide a roadmap to others to follow. INL appreciates the Luminant?s participation in this research.

The Inflation Reduction Act Has Provided an Opening to Dramatically Change and Improve the Economics of Nuclear Power Until recently, the commercial nuclear sector has faced unprecedented financial challenges driven by low natural gas prices and subsidized renewables, in a marketplace that did not reward carbon-free baseload capacity. The industry is also plagued by labor shortages, increasingly obsolete labor-centric operating models and antiquated analog technology that threaten the viability of the long-term operations of domestic nuclear facilities. In this context, the economic survival of nuclear power plants requires an efficient and technology-centric operating model that harvests the native efficiencies of advanced technology. Such transformations have been made in many other industries – notably, oil and gas. The passage by Congress of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in 2022 provides nuclear operators with unprecedented economic incentives to pursue these upgrades. To realize the benefits of these incentives and achieve the necessary transformations in the nuclear operating model, the nuclear industry must overcome both the continuing unease about licensing pathways and uncertainty related to implementation costs.
The purpose of this slide deck is to provide an overview of the benefits of interregional transmission and to assess the specific transmission landscape of Southeast Asia, with respect to potential interconnections between Singapore and neighboring countries. This analysis also explores the distribution of renewable resources and electricity demand in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) as well as current and anticipated interregional transmission, in order to inform future interconnection plans.
