Thermal environment effects on strength and impact properties of boron-aluminum composites

A systematic study was conducted regarding the degradation of fracture strength and impact energy in commercial B-Al composites in both static and cyclic thermal environments. The composites used in the study contained approximately 50 vol % boron fibers, unidirectionally aligned in either a 6061 Al or 1100 Al matrix. The tensile strengths of the composites after 3000 thermal cycles as a function of upper cycle temperature are presented in graphs. The temperature at which the strengths of 6061 Al matrix, B-Al composites were significantly degraded after 3000 cycles was noticeably higher than that for the 1100 Al matrix composites. Static heating at 420 C resulted in no significant strength degradation for the 6061 Al matrix composites. In the case of 1100 matrix composites, some degradation was observed at 420 C but markedly less than in the composites cycled to 420 C.

Genesis of howardites, diogenites, and eucrites

The reported investigation was mainly concerned with the precise determinations of major-, minor-, and trace-element abundances, especially the REE abundances in the bulk howardites in order to establish the bulk rock composition for the future chemical-mineralogical, petrographic studies of different rock types on the chemically unique howardites and diogenites if they exist. From the chemical data for the major-element abundances and the REE patterns of the howardites analyzed, it is evident that these howardites are predominantly composed of eucritic and diogenitic components. The analytical results for howardites and diogenites are shown in two tables together with the results for CRB-1. The chondritic normalized K, Sr, Ba, REE, Hf, and Sc abundances of these howardites are plotted in two graphs.

Lifetimes of fiber composites under sustained tensile loading

A description is presented of the test techniques which have been used to apply sustained uniaxial tensile loading to fiber/epoxy composites. The fiber types used include S-glass, aramid, graphite, and beryllium wire. The applied load vs lifetime data for four composite materials are presented in graphs. Attention is given to a statistical analysis of data, a performance comparison of various composites, the age effect on the strength of composites, the applicability of the lifetime data to complex composites, and aspects of accelerated test method development. It is found that the lifetime of a composite under a sustained load varies widely. Depending on the composite system, the minimum life typically differs from the maximum life by a factor of 100 to 1000. It is in this connection recommended that a use of average life data should be avoided in serious design calculations.

JANTX1N649-1 diode

Samples mamufactured by Semtech and Micro Semiconductor were tested. Both lots did quite well in tests. Plot showing cumulative failure distribution for group 2 was drawn for both lots. Graphs for groups 1 and 3 failures could not be drawn because of extremely low occurence.

Historical and projected power requirements

Policy planning for projected space power requirements is discussed. Topics of discussion cover: (1) historical space power trends (prime power requirements and power system costs); and (2) two approaches to future space power requirements (mission/traffic model approach and advanced system scenario approach). Graphs, tables, and flow charts are presented.

Workbook for estimating effects of accidental explosions in propellant ground handling and transport systems

A workbook is presented to supplement an earlier NASA publication, which was intended to provide the designer and safety engineer with rapid methods for predicting damage and hazards from explosions of liquid propellant and compressed gas vessels used in ground storage, transport and handling. Information is presented in the form of graphs and tables to allow easy calculation, using only desk or handheld calculators. Topics covered in various chapters are: (1) estimates of explosive yield; (2) characteristics of pressure waves; (3) effects of pressure waves; (4) characteristics of fragments; and (5) effects of fragments and related topics.

Radiometer at a frequency of 108-120 GHz for study of the earth's atmosphere

Calculated and experimental design and operating characteristics of a 108-120 GHz superheterodyne radiometer with intermediate frequency modulation and a second harmonic frequency converter are presented and discussed. With a 1 sec time constant, the radiometer fluctuation sensitivity threshold is 1 K, without degradation in 2 hours of operation. Graphs of frequency variations, calibration, conversion loss, rectified current, fixed bias voltage, and contact needle impedance are included.

A model for dynamic allocation of human attention among multiple tasks

The problem of multi-task attention allocation with special reference to aircraft piloting is discussed with the experimental paradigm used to characterize this situation and the experimental results obtained in the first phase of the research. A qualitative description of an approach to mathematical modeling, and some results obtained with it are also presented to indicate what aspects of the model are most promising. Two appendices are given which (1) discuss the model in relation to graph theory and optimization and (2) specify the optimization algorithm of the model.

Robot Display and Control program (ROBDAC)

The ROBOT display and control program (ROBDAC) to be written for the Adage 340 computer is designed to communicate with the Univac 1110 computer with the aid of the graphic support communications programs. ROBDAC and the Adage computer act as an input/output device for the program ROBOT, which is run on the Univac 1110. ROBDAC controls the input to ROBOT by displaying images of the inputs, providing an editing technique for these inputs, shipping the input data to the Univac, and then commanding ROBOT to start execution. The output is done in a similar manner after receiving the output data from the Univac. This data will be displayed numerically as well as by plotted graphs. All of the input/output will be done interactively with practically 'finger tip' control. A general program flow diagram of ROBDAC is included.

The IRAS radiation environment

Orbital flux integration for three selected mission altitudes and geographic instantaneous flux-mapping for nominal flight-path altitude were used to determine the external charged particle radiation predicted for the Infrared Astronomy Satellite. A current field model was used for magnetic field definitions for three nominal circular trajectories and for the geographic mapping positions. Innovative analysis features introduced include (1) positional fluxes as a function of time and energy for the most severe pass through the South Atlantic Anomaly; (2) total positional doses as a function of time and shield thickness; (3) comparison mapping fluxes for ratios of positional intensities to orbit integrated averages; and (4) statistical exposure-time history of a trajectory as a function of energy indicating, in percent of total mission duration, the time intervals over which the instantaneous fluxes would exceed the orbit integrated averages. Results are presented in tables and graphs.
