Using Earth-based Operational Field Tests as High-Fidelity Analogs for Planetary Surface Exploration

NASA is preparing to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon within the next decade and establish a permanent sustainable human presence before sending humans onto Mars. To ensure the success of these missions, NASA has performed operational testing in terrestrial, aquatic, and laboratory analog environments that simulate Lunar and Martian environmental characteristics to evaluate exploration concepts of operations (ConOps), engineering design requirements, science support needs, mission operations techniques, and crew training. Terrestrial analogs include Desert Research and Technology Studies (D-RATS), Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains (BASALT), and Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships (NextSTEP)Habitat Ground Testing. Aquatic analogs include NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) and Pavilion Lake Research Project (PLRP).Laboratory analogs include the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), Active Response Gravity Offload System(ARGOS), rock yards, and virtual and hybrid reality simulation environments. While no single Earth-based analog environment is perfect for simulating all characteristics of other planetary surfaces, testing across multiple locations leverages the strengths of each to provide an integrated understanding of how to best conduct real spaceflight surface exploration missions.

Spectral Fidelity of Earth's Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems

The Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) investigation will create global maps of spectral surface reflectance and emissivity at a cadence of 16 days or better, with coverage to address global questions about Earth's geology, cryosphere and ecosystems. The revolutionary potential poses a commensurate challenge: creating contiguous maps free from regional biases induced by atmosphere, observation geometry, or inversion error. This will require an accurate calibration with precise knowledge of each channel's spectral response. Here, we quantify the impact of spectral calibration on SBG's aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem objectives. We find that contemporary algorithms for ecosystem trait retrieval demand more accurate spectral calibration than historical missions. Errors due to drift or spatial nonuniformity in the wavelength calibration that have previously been considered acceptable can cause systematic errors larger than the instrument noise and of the same order as the variability SBG aims to measure. Moreover, their impact on atmospheric correction can induce climate-dependent systematic errors that thwart comparisons between ecosystems. These results underscore the importance of spectral response accuracy in SBG mission design.

High-Fidelity Analysis of Six-Passenger Quadrotor Air Taxi Concept

A code-to-code comparison has been performed for high-fidelity simulations ofNASA’s six-passenger quadrotor air taxi con- cept vehicle. Themultidisciplinary simulations combine comprehensive rotorcraft dynamics with high-fidelity fluid dynamics obtained from an unsteady Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics code. The results are then compared with those in the literature. A quantitative comparison of converged trim angles has been performed and normal force, chord force, and pitching-moment coefficients arepresented for qualitativecomparison.

Medium-Fidelity CFD Modeling of Multicopter Wakes for Airborne Sensor Measurements

A steady-state multicopter simulation capability leveraging automated Cartesian grid generation and a blade element source term rotor model was used to investigate multi-rotor aerodynamics in and out of ground effect. Simulations demonstrated that this model is able to predict reasonably accurate thrust in ground effect for both single and multiple propeller cases. The method yielded accurate lift and drag predictions for a commercial quadcopter when compared to recent wind tunnel test data. This aircraft was then simulated in a variety of flight conditions, including both hover and edgewise forward flight, to determine if generalized guidelines for airborne sensor placement could be developed. Velocity perturbation magnitudes showed large regions of affected air upstream of the vehicle at low speeds, which contracted as the vehicle’s speed was increased. Placing the sensors more than one characteristic length ahead of or above the aircraft reduces errors from rotor-induced flow at higher speeds. For low-speed forward flight, the entrainment of flow into the propeller wakes introduces significant flow turning above the aircraft, suggesting that a forward location, with more moderate perturbations, could be advantageous for these conditions.

Influence of the Perception Constraint, Installation Effects, and Broadband SelfNoise on Low-Fidelity, Multi-point, UAM Vehicle Perception-Influenced-Design(PID) Optimization

UAM vehicles represent a unique challenge in acoustics because there are a limited number of full-scale datasets that can be used to calibrate and validate prediction models. In addition, acoustics is considered more often in the early design loop as a higher priority concern in UAM vehicle design, whereas with traditional vehicles, acoustics is typically addressed with post-design constraints. This paper will present an approach in design optimization of a proprotor in two flight conditions, hover, and forward flight, with several acoustic objective functions that simulate community response. An adjoint-capable vortex-lattice method (VLM), implemented in VSPAERO, will be used to compute the blade forces and inflow properties required to compute tonal and broadband noise using the second-generation Aircraft NOise Prediction Program (ANOPP2). In addition, a wing is placed near the proprotor to simulate installation effects on a vehicle’s wing. The influence of rotation rate, chord distribution, twist angle, and sweep on installation, broadband noise, and choice of perception constraint from the design optimization will be shown.
