Scintillation light detection performance for the DUNE ND-LAr 2 × 2 modules

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be using a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr TPC) with optically separated modules in the Near Detector (ND) complex. A prototype experiment, DUNE ND-LAr 2 × 2, is composed of four test modules. They detect ionization charge through a pixel-based readout and scintillation light through fibers in light collection modules and light traps called ArCLights. The light detection performance for two modules of DUNE ND-LAr 2 × 2 that took cosmic ray data at the University of Bern is shown. We present further the role of the 2 × 2 prototype in DUNE and how it is used to demonstrate the reconstruction capabilities of its light detectors in terms of energy thresholds and timing resolution.

Full-dimensional quantum studies of vibrational energy transfer dynamics between H 2 O and Ar: theory assessing experiment

In this work we report the first full-dimensional quantum mechanical calculations of the ro-vibrational inelastic scattering dynamics between water molecules and argon atoms on an accurate potential energy surface, using a recently developed time-independent quantum method based on the close-coupling approach. The state-to-state integral cross-sections and rate coefficients show strong observance of gap laws. The calculated thermal rate coefficients for the relaxation of the stretching fundamental states of H 2 O are in good agreement with experimental values, while those for the bending overtone state are approximately five times smaller than the values extracted through a previous kinetic modeling of fluorescence decay data. Our state-specific quantum scattering results suggest the need to reassess the kinetic modeling of the experimental data. This work advanced our understanding of the quantum dynamics of vibrationally inelastic energy transfer processes involving polyatomic molecules.

A Metal‐Organic Framework with Nonpolar Pore Surfaces for the One‐Step Acquisition of C 2 H 4 from a C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 Mixture

Abstract Because C 2 H 4 plays an essential role in the chemical industry, economical and energy‐efficient separation of ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) from ethane (C 2 H 6 ) is extremely important. With the exception of energy‐intensive cryogenic distillation, there are few one‐step methods to obtain polymer‐grade (≥99.95 % pure) C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixtures. Here we report a highly stable metal‐organic‐framework (MOF) FJI‐H11‐Me(des) (FJI‐H=Hong's group in Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter) which features one‐dimensional hexagonal nonpolar pore surfaces constructed by aromatic rings and alkyl groups. This FJI‐H11‐Me(des) adsorbs C 2 H 6 rather than C 2 H 4 between 273 and 303 K. Practical breakthrough experiments with C 2 H 4 containing 1 % C 2 H 6 have shown that FJI‐H11‐Me(des) can realize the acquisition in one‐step of polymer‐grade, 99.95 % pure C 2 H 4 under various conditions including different gas flow rates, temperatures and relative humidity.

Structure Sensitivity and Catalyst Restructuring for CO2 Electro-reduction on Copper

Abstract Cu is the most promising metal catalyst for CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 RR) to multi-carbon products, yet the structure sensitivity of the reaction and the stability versus restructuring of the catalyst surface under reaction conditions remain controversial. Here, atomic scale simulations of surface energies and reaction pathway kinetics supported by experimental evidence unveil that CO 2 RR does not take place on perfect planar Cu(111) and Cu(100) surfaces but rather on steps or kinks. These planar surfaces tend to restructure in reaction conditions to the active stepped surfaces, with the strong binding of CO on defective sites acting as a thermodynamic driving force. Notably, we identify that the square motifs adjacent to defects, not the defects themselves, as the active sites for CO 2 RR via synergistic effect. We evaluate these mechanisms against experiments of CO 2 RR on ultra-high vacuum-prepared ultraclean Cu surfaces, uncovering the crucial role of step-edge orientation in steering selectivity. Overall, our study refines the structural sensitivity of CO 2 RR on Cu at the atomic level, highlights the self-activation mechanism and elucidates the origin of in situ restructuring of Cu surfaces during the reaction.

Financial Analysis of the High Flow Experiment conducted at the Glen Canyon Dam during Water Year 2023

The Glen Canyon Dam (GCD) is a Colorado River Storage Project (CRSP) power resource that is a component of the Salt Lake City Area Integrated Projects (SLCA/IP). The 2016 record of decision (ROD) for the GCD long-term experimental and management plan (LTEMP) final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) specified criteria for GCD monthly water releases, daily and hourly operating limits, and experimental releases. This report examines the financial implications of the high flow experiment (HFE) conducted at GCD during the spring of Water Year (WY) 2023 as required by the LTEMP HFE Protocol. This report is part of a series of reports that describe the financial costs of LTEMP experimental releases since the 2016 ROD was adopted in January 2017. Previous reports analyzed the impact of several past HFEs and Bug Flow Experiments. This report focuses on the HFE conducted in April 2023. For this experimental release, financial costs of approximately $1.33 million were incurred because the HFE required sustained water releases exceeding the power plant’s maximum turbine flow rate. In addition, during the experiment, operators were not allowed to shape GCD power production, either to follow Firm Electric Service (FES) customer day-ahead energy deliveries or to respond to market prices. This study identifies the main factors contributing to the HFE costs and examines the interdependencies among these factors. It applies an integrated set of tools to estimate Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) financial impacts by simulating GCD under two types of cases; namely, (1) a “With Experiment” case that mimics the operations that actually occurred and (2) a “Without Experiment” case that simulates operations under the assumption that the HFE did not occur. The “With Experiment” case mimics operations during the HFE and the entire month the HFE occurred. It complies with LTEMP hourly and daily operating criteria. The “Without Experiment” case assumes that the HFE did not occur. The monthly water release volume is assumed to be identical under both cases. The Colorado River Storage Project Python-based model (CRiSPPy) model was the main modeling tool used to simulate the dispatch of the GCD hydropower plant and associated water releases from Lake Powell. In the modeling process, the research team used extensive data sets and historical information on SLCA/IP power plant characteristics, hydrologic conditions, and WAPA’s power purchases and sales prices. In addition to estimating the financial impact of the HFE, the team used the CRiSPPy model to gain insights into the interplay among ROD operating criteria, exceptions made to criteria to accommodate the HFE, and WAPA operating practices.

PLA Renewable Bio Polymer Based Solid-State Gamma Radiation Detector-Dosimeter for Biomedical and Nuclear Industry Applications

Polylactic acid (PLA) as a “green,” renewable corn-soy based polymer resin was assessed as a novel solid-state detector for rapid-turnaround gamma radiation dosimetry in the 1–100 kGy range–of significant interest in biomedical and general nuclear industry applications. Co-60 was used as the source of gamma photons. It was found that PLA resin responds well in terms of rheology and porosity metrics with an absorbed gamma dose (Dg). In this work, rheological changes were ascertained via measuring the differential mass loss ratio (MLR) of irradiated PLA placed within PTFE-framed (40 mm × 20 mm × 0.77 mm) cavities bearing ~0.9 g of PLA resin and pressed for 12–16 min in a controlled force hot press under ~6.6 kN loading and platens heated to 227 °C for the low Dg range: 0–11 kGy; and to 193 °C for the extended Dg range: 11–120 kGy. MLR varied quadratically from 0.05 to ~0.2 (1σ ~ 0.007) in the 0–11 kGy experiments, and from 0.05 to ~0.5 (1σ ~0.01) in the 0–120 kGy experiments. Rheological changes from gamma irradiation were modeled and simultaneously correlated with void-pocket formations, which increase with Dg. A single PLA resin bead (~0.04 g) was compressed 5 min at 216 °C in 0–16 kGy experiments, and compressed 2 min at 232 °C in the 16–110 kGy experiments, to form sturdy ~100 µm thick wafers in the same press. Aggregate coupon porosity was then readily measurable with conventional optical microscope imaging and analyzed with standard image processing; this provided complementary data to MLR. Average porosity vs. dose varied quadratically from ~0 to ~15% in the 0–16 kGy range and from ~0 to ~18% over the 16–114 kGy range. These results provide evidence for utilizing “green”/renewable (under $0.01) PLA resin beads for rapid and accurate (+/-5–10%) gamma dosimetry over a wide 0–120 kGy range, using simple to deploy mass and void measuring techniques using common laboratory equipment.

Reduction of thionucleosides - A prebiotic pathway to deoxyribonucleosides

A mechanism is proposed for the prebiotic synthesis of deoxyribonucleotides and possible nucleic acid analogs from ribonucleotides by a pathway involving 2'-thio-2'-deoxyribonucleosides. The mechanism is supported by laboratory experiments in which 2'-thio-2'-deoxycytidine was synthesized from anhydro arabinosyl cytosine in dithiophosphate and CS2. The subsequent reduction of the thio-analogs has been achieved with ferrous ion, and photochemically. It is noted that the proposed pathway for prebiotic deoxyribonucleotide synthesis is in harmony with the Principle of Continuity, as both the proposed and present pathways rely on the reduction of a 2' functional group.

Supersonic Retropropulsion Test 1853 in NASA LaRC Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel Test Section 2

A supersonic retropropulsion experiment was conducted in the Langley Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel Test Section 2 at Mach numbers of 2.4, 3.5, and 4.6. Intended as a code validation effort, this study used pretest computations to size and refine the model such that tunnel blockage and internal flow separations were minimized. A 5-in diameter 70 degree sphere-cone forebody, which can accommodate up to four 4:1 area ratio nozzles, followed by a 9.55 inches long cylindrical aft body was selected for this test after computational maturation. The primary measurements for this experiment were high spatial-density surface pressures. In addition, high speed schlieren video and internal pressures and temperatures were acquired. The test included parametric variations in the number of nozzles utilized, thrust coefficients (roughly 0 to 4), and angles of attack (-8 to 20 degrees). The run matrix was developed to also allow quantification of various sources of experimental uncertainty, such as random errors due to run-to-run variations and systematic errors due to flowfield or model misalignments. To accommodate the uncertainty assessment, many runs and replicates were conducted with the model at various locations within the tunnel and with model roll angles of 0, 60, 120, and 180 degrees. This test report provides operational details of the experiment, contains a review of trends, and provides all schlieren and pressure results within appendices.

All-Inorganic Open-Framework Chalcogenides, A 3 Ga 5 S 9 · x H 2 O ( A = Rb and Cs), Exhibiting Ultrafast Uranyl Remediation and Illustrating a Novel Post-Synthetic Preparation of Open-Framework Oxychalcogenides

Fast and effective uranyl sequestration is of interest to the nuclear industry. Recently layered chalcogenide materials have demonstrated fast, selective, and efficient sorption properties towards uranyl cations and the development and investigation of new types of chalcogenide materials continues to be of interest and represents an intriguing option for uranyl remediation. Three new all-inorganic A 3 Ga 5 S 9 ·xH 2 O (A = Rb, Rb/Cs, and Cs) open-framework chalcogenides were obtained via an in-situ alkali carbonate to alkali sulfide conversion process achieved under mild hydrothermal conditions. The structures of the all-inorganic open framework chalcogenides consist of a 2-fold interpenetrated diamond-like 3D framework containing pseudo-T 3 [Ga 10 S 20 ] 10– supertetrahedra. 48% of the structural volume is occupied by A + cations and water species, as established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), infrared (IR) and energy-dispersive (EDS) spectroscopies. The dynamic nature of the A + cations and water molecules within the pores was investigated via single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as by IR spectroscopy monitored H 2 O to D 2 O exchange experiments. Framework stability was probed with post-synthetic treatment of A 3 Ga 5 S 9 ·xH 2 O (A = Rb and Cs) samples in acidic solutions that resulted in the formation of the oxysulfide (A/H) 3 Ga 5 S 9–y O y ·xH 2 O (A = Rb and Cs; y = 0–1), as shown by SCXRD and IR. Ion-exchange studies on A 3 Ga 5 S 9 ·xH 2 O (A = Rb and Cs) samples were carried out utilizing a uranyl acetate solution. The presence of the UO 2 2+ species in the ion-exchanged product was supported by IR and EDS spectroscopies. Batch method ion-exchange experiments on Cs 3 Ga 5 S 9 ·xH 2 O powder demonstrated fast kinetics with 95% uranyl removal from the uranyl acetate solution during the first minute, a maximum uranyl uptake capacity of 15mg/g, and the subsequent elution of uranyl species with KCl solution. Furthermore, the porous and dynamic nature of the A 3 Ga 5 S 9 ·xH 2 O framework coupled with effective UO 2 2+ ···S 2– bonding interactions makes it a good potential sorbent for uranyl remediation from aqueous media.
