Online tuning of particle accelerators is necessary in order to achieve optimal machine performance. However, it is also a major challenge due to the large parameter space which must be searched and the fact that many of the desir- able objectives compete with one another, and so will not reach their optimal values simultaneously. In order to mitigate these issues, we have explored using dimension-reduction techniques to reduce the size of the parameter space which must be searched and multi-objective genetic algorithms to obtain the sets of tuning parameters which provide pareto-optimal values for the objectives. These methods have enabled us to obtain improved values of the vertical emittance at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), and to do so with greater control of orbit errors. Algorithmic tuning is a multidisciplinary endeavour, requiring expertise in beam dynamics, diagnostics, control systems and computer science, and thus a key practical problem is to formulate a common language in which experts with different specialties can communicate. We developed a solution to this problem in the form of a generic accelerator software interface that allows for rapid prototyping of optimization and control algorithms. Our interface is built on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS) and makes possible testing control code in simulation before deployment on real accelerators, as well as deployment of third-party optimization code.
In this brief tutorial, I will describe the simplest way of modeling a deadly infectious disease, such as COVID-19. I will show that at early times, the disease grows exponentially, but at late times, falls off like a Bell curve. I will solve the equations numerically with Python. A common mathematical model is the so-called compartmental model, where diseases can move people between "categories" such as healthy, infectious, or truly sick. This is a large, well established field and there are many good resources on this topic. I started with the SIAM review article The mathematics of infectious diseases. However, there are many excellent textbooks and more modern reviews as well.
The Portable Isotopic Neutron Spectroscopy (PINS) is a commercialized system developed by Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to examine chemical warfare agents (CWA) non-destructively, utilizing Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) techniques. The PINS system takes advantage of a high-resolution gamma-ray spectrum from a mechanically-cooled high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. One of the difficult technical challenges is to discriminate the chlorine-based chemical agents. Especially, CN, CNB, CNS and CG have similar chemical compositions to make it hard to discriminate them with a higher confidence. Current identification algorithms for PINS systems with 252-Cf sources have been improved and updated continuously as more field data became available, and new algorithms was studied to complement the current algorithms by adopting the Gaussian Bayes classifier. These new algorithms were intended to be applied to a subset of chlorine-based chemical agents, and their main goal is discriminate CN, CNB, CNS and CG with their ratios of the chlorine neutron inelastic 1763keV peak to the chlorine thermal neutron capture 1959keV peak, which is referred to as the “Cl i/c” or “clic” ratio in this study. The Cl i/c ratios were assumed to follow Gaussian distributions with the means and the standard deviations unique to their corresponding chemical agents. The prior probabilities of these four chemical agents were optimized with a collection of field data to achieve the best performance in terms of precision or positive predictive value (PPV). Finally, their posterior probabilities as functions of the Cl i/c ratio were implemented in the current version of PINS analysis software in order to be tested with more field data.
A robust, sufficiently accurate and practical hydrodynamic simulation toolset is required as a key component of the modeling and simulation of air-gap electrostatic discharge events. This work was performed to complement these ongoing efforts. In particular, hydrodynamic simulations must be vetted to ensure they are robust and sufficiently accurate over relevant characteristic scales. Verification models were generated in order to cultivate the technical knowledge and expertise needed to properly create, implement and execute numerical simulations. Furthermore, this effort was utilized extensively to educate students on the mathematical and numerical principles underlying hydrodynamic simulations. This education opportunity, provided in a holistic and rigorous manner, has greatly benefited developing scientists and engineers with the necessary understandings and toolsets required to excel at accomplishing the task at hand, and, more generally, it has enabled them to generate key programmatic deliverables. This report articulates several subtilties; specifically, how perturbations, nonlinear behavior, and dissipative mechanisms influence numerical stability, how to properly structure mathematical and numerical solutions, and how to properly generate error estimation/assignment. A more rigorous discussion of the consequences of such topics can be found in the body of this report in Chapters 2 and 3 with qualitative findings discussed in Chapter 4.
Current and future generation neutrino oscillation experiments aim towards a high-precision mea- surement of the oscillation parameters and that requires an unprecedented understanding of neutrino-nucleus scattering. Charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering is the process in which the neutrino produces a charged lepton and removes a single intact nucleon from the nu- cleus without producing any additional particles. For existing and forthcoming accelerator–based neutrino experiments, CCQE interactions are either the dominant process or part of the signal.

Focal Area(s): Focal Area 2: AI for predictive modeling, including AI-derived model components, and AI-enabled applications including parameter optimization, data assimilation, and uncertainty quantification. Focal Area 1: AI-assisted data assimilation using numerical Earth system models. Science Challenge: Earth system models have structural biases that lead to uncertain predictions, and their complexity and expense makes it difficult constraining the models with data or improved physical understanding.
The reliability, durability and lifetime performance of passivated emitter, rear cell (PERC) modules used in real-world PV power plants is a critical challenge underlying the rapid adoption and bankability of these PERC cells, whose high efficiency help reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). We propose a degradation-science study of PERC module degradation pathways, benchmarking them relative to known degradation mechanisms and pathways of the incumbent aluminum back surface field (Al-BSF) modules exposed to real-world and accelerated exposure conditions.
