Installation noise measurements of model SR and CR propellers

Noise measurements on a 0.1 scale SR-2 propeller in a single and counter rotation mode, in a pusher and tractor configuration, and operating at non-zero angles of attack are summarized. A measurement scheme which permitted 143 measurements of each of these configurations in the Langley 4- by 7-meter low speed tunnel is also described.

Solute transport and the prediction of breakaway oxidation in gamma + beta Ni-Cr-Al alloys

The Al transport and the condition leading to breakaway oxidation during the cyclic oxidation of gamma + beta NiCrAl alloys have been studied. The Al concentration/distance profiles were measured after various cyclic oxidation exposures at 1200 C. It was observed that cyclic oxidation results in a decreasing Al concentration at the oxide/metal interface, maintaining a constant flux of Al to the Al2O3 scale. It was also observed that breakaway oxidation occurs when the Al concentration at the oxide/metal interface approaches zero. A numerical model was developed to simulate the diffusional transport of Al and to predict breakaway oxidation in gamma + beta NiCrAl alloys undergoing cyclic oxidation. In a comparison of two alloys with similar oxide spalling characteristics, the numerical model was shown to predict correctly the onset of breakaway oxidation in the higher Al-content alloy.

Abundancies of Ni, Cr, CO and major elements in the silicate portion of the Moon: Constraints from primary lunar magmas

The lunar volcanic glasses are samples of primary magnas derived by partial melting of the Moon mantle. The twenty-seven varieties of glass define three linear arrays having nearly constant Mg/Si ratios. The low-Ti magmas in each array approach the chondritic Ti/Al ratio. In addition, the Ca/Al ration in these low-Ti magmas trends toward the chrondritid value as one proceeds from array 1 through array 3. Using the chemistries of these primary magmas, as well as the assumption that the Moon possesses chondritic Ca/Al/Ti/Mg ratios, the silicate composition of the Moon has been estimated. The implications of these results are discussed.

Fatigue behavior of 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel weldments containing fabrication discontinuities

The applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics to characterize the fatigue behavior of high-strength steel weldments containing lack-of-penetration (LOP) and slag/lack-of-fusion (S/LOF) discontinuities is explored. Full penetration, double-V butt welds with reinforcements removed were tested under zero-to-tension axial loading. Various filler metals and welding techniques were used. Both sound welds and welds containing discontinuities were cycled to failure. Where possible, cycles to crack initiation were estimated by strain gage measurements. The fracture mechanics approach was successful in correlating the fatigue lifetimes of specimens containing single LOP discontinuities of varying size. However, the fatigue behavior of specimens containing multiple S/LOF discontinuities proved to be much more complex and difficult to analyze.

Effect of boron on intergranular hot cracking in Ni-Cr-Fe superalloys containing niobium

Solidification mechanisms had a dominant influence on microfissuring behavior of the test group. Carbon modified the Laves formation significantly and showed that one approach to alloy design would be balancing carbide formers against Laves formers. Boron's strong effect on microfissuring can be traced to its potency as a Laves former. Boron's segregation to grain boundaries plays at best a secondary role in microfissuring.

Measurements of striae in CR+ doped YAG laser crystals

Striations in Czochralski (CZ) grown crystals have been observed in materials such as GaAs, silicon, photorefractive crystals used for data storage, potassium titanyl phosphate crystals and LiNbO3. Several techniques have been used for investigating these defects including electron microscopy, laser scanning tomography, selective photoetching, X-ray diffuse scattering, interference orthoscopy, laser interferometry and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy mapping. A 2mm thick sample of the material to be investigated is illuminated with light that is absorbed and non-absorbed by the ion concentration to be observed. The back surface of the sample is focused onto a solid-state image detector and images of the input beam and absorbed (and diffracted) beams are captured at two wavelengths. The variation of the coefficient of absorption asa function of distance on the sample can be derived from these measurements. A Big Sky Software Beamcode system is used to capture and display images. Software has been written to convert the Beamcode data files to a format that can be imported into a spreadsheet program such as Quatro Pro. The spreadsheet is then used to manipulate and display data. A model of the intensity map of the striae collected by the imaging system has been proposed and a data analysis procedure derived. From this, the variability of the attenuation coefficient alpha can be generated. Preliminary results show that alpha may vary by a factor of four or five over distances of 100 mu m. Potential errors and problems have been discovered and additional experiments and improvements to the experimental setup are in progress and we must now show that the measurement techniques and data analysis procedures provide 'real' information. Striae are clearly visible at all wavelengths including white light. Their basic spatial frequency does not change radically, at least when changing from blue to green to white light. Further experimental and theoretical work can be done to improve the data collection techniques and to verify the data analysis procedures.

A critical analysis of interstellar Zn and Cr as galactic abundance benchmarks for quasar absorbers

We present interstellar gas-phase abundances of zinc and chromium in the Milky Way for comparison with the abundances of these elements in damped Ly-alpha systems at redshifts near z approximately 2. We make use of both IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) and GHRS (Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph) archival information in deriving the Milky Way values and find that the average difference in (Zn/H) and (Cr/Zn) between the Milky Way and damped Ly-alpha systems at large N(H1) is about 0.9 dex. The Zn/H values we find for the Milky Way are approximately -0.2 to -0.7 dex below solar and are due in large part to depletion of Zn onto dust grains. The amount of this gas-phase depletion is variable and depends upon the H1 column density and molecular fraction of the gas. Milky Way sight lines having low molecular fractions have values of (Zn/H) within approximately 0.2 dex of the solar value. Combined with larger values of (Cr/Zn) found for the damped Ly-alpha systems, this result confirms that measures of (Zn/H) should accurately reflect the lower gas-phase abundances of Zn found in these systems.

Development and Evaluation of Directionally-Solidified NiAl/(CR,MO)-Based Eutectic Alloys for Airfoil Applications

The results of recent efforts to develop directionally-solidified alloys based on the Ni-33Al-31Cr-3Mo eutectic composition are discussed. These developmental efforts included studying the effects of macroalloying and growth rates on microstructure formation as well as the elevated temperature compressive and tensile properties of these alloys. These observations revealed that contrary to conventional opinion, the cellular microstructure was stronger and tougher than the planar eutectic microstructure due to a microstructural refinement of the cell size and interlamellar spacing. The high temperature strengths of these alloys are compared with those of commercial superalloys and advanced NiAl single crystals. The implications of this research on airfoil manufacturing and applications are discussed.

High-Temperature Mechanical Properties of Cr(3+) Doped Sapphire Fibers

High-temperature slow-crack growth of single crystal 10 wt% Cr2O3 - Al2O3 (nominal composition) fibers has been studied by tensile rupture experiments at 1400 C, under different stressing rates (0.5 to 41.5 MPa/s). Slow-crack growth (SCG) is less pronounced with increasing Cr2O3. Rupture stresses increased with the stressing rate from 397 MPa to 515 MPa, resulting in a SCG exponent, N=19. The Cr2O3 composition was analyzed by Energy Dispersed X-Ray Spectra (EDS) and fracture surfaces were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results are compared with previous studies on 100-300 ppm Cr3(+) doped sapphire fibers and on commercial sapphire fibers.

Comparative Planetary Mineralogy: V/(Cr+Al) Systematics in Chromites as an Indicator of Relative Oxygen Fugacity

As our contribution to the new "Oxygen in the Solar System" initiative of the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the NASA Cosmochemistry Program, we have been developing oxygen barometers based largely on behavior of V which can occur in four valence states V2+, V3+, V4+, and V5+, and record at least 8 orders of magnitude of fO2. Our first efforts in measuring these valence proportions were by XANES techniques in basaltic glasses from Earth, Moon, and Mars. We now address the behavior of V valence states in chromite in basalts from Earth, Moon, and Mars. We have been looking for a "V in chromite oxybarometer" that works with data collected by the electron microprobe and thus is readily accessible to a large segment of the planetary materials community. This paper describes very early results that will be refined over the next two years.
