BLOC Site - ASSIST Thermodynamic retrievals TROPoe / Derived Data

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe (Turner and Löhnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019; Turner and Löhnert 2021). The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous radiances observed with an Atmospheric Sounder Spectrometer by Infrared Spectral Technology (ASSIST, Rochette et al. 2009) operated by NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory on Block Island for WFIP3. The spectral bands used in the retrieval are in the wavenumber range from 612 - 905.4 cm-1 and are specified in Turner and Löhnert (2021). Radiances are noise-filtered but not averaged in time to minimize errors due to non-uniform clouds. Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height from a collocated ceilometer operated by NOAA GML and temperature, water vapor mixing ratio, and pressure from a sensor attached to the ASSIST housing. In addition to these temporally resolved input data, TROPoe requires an a priori dataset (prior) that provides mean climatological estimates of thermodynamic profiles and specifies how temperature and humidity covary with height as an input (for details see, e.g., Djalalova et al. 2022). The prior is a key component of the retrieval and provides a constraint on the ill-posed inversion problem. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at Upton, NY.

Prospects for the Voyager extra-planetary and interstellar mission

An advance study has been conducted to examine the trajectory characteristics of Voyager 1 and 2 as they depart from the solar system and traverse interstellar space. A survey of the extraplanetary phase, commencing with completion of the final planetary encounters and ceasing with loss of spacecraft communication, considers the trajectory aspects attendant to a heliospheric investigation and possible sensing of a trans-Neptunian massive body. An analysis of departure telecommunications capability attempts to bound the inevitable time of communication loss. A study of the interstellar phase examines closest approaches of the spacecraft to the sun's stellar neighbours. A covariance analysis is provided to illustrate the statistical effect of stellar state uncertainties on these approaches. In addition to the Voyager spacecraft, data for Pioneers 10 and 11 are provided where appropriate.

A new gravitational model for the earth from satellite tracking data - GEM-T1

A computation of a terrestrial gravitational field model called the Goddard Earth Model GEM-T1 is discussed and compared to previous models, including the GEM-L2. The software tools were redesigned for the model, allowing for the optimization of the technique of relative data weighting and model estimation used in GEM solutions. The GEM-T1 model provides a simultaneous solution for a gravity model in spherical harmonics complete to degree and order 36, a subset of 66 ocean tidal coefficients for the long-wavelength components of 12 major tides, and 5-day averaged earth rotation and polar motion parameters for the 1980 period on. GEM-T1 was derived from satellite tracking data acquired on 17 different satellites whose inclinations ranged from 15 degrees to polar. A simulation of the TOPEX/POSEIDON orbit using the covariances of the GEM-T1 model was made. Estimated radial error for the simulation was reduced to less than 30 cm rms.

Zonal contributions to global momentum variations on intraseasonal through interannual time scales

The variability in a 13-year time series of daily values of the relative angular momentum of the atmosphere (M) is separated into three frequency bands: intraseasonal, seasonal, and interannual. Two methods are used to achieve this separation, and the amount of variance attributable to intraseasonal fluctuations, in particular, is sensitive to the choice made. Seasonal time scales clearly dominate the global momentum series; included in this frequency band is a notable dip in the series early in almost every calendar year. To localize the sources of the frequency band-dependent fluctuations in M, the data were decomposed into series of angular momentum values within each of 46 equal-area zonal belts over the globe and covariances were formed between these belt series and M. Seasonal variations in M represent the residual of opposing contributions from the subtropical jets of the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres. Both intraseasonal and interannual variations in M result mostly from behavior in the tropics.

Kalman filter estimation of attitude and gyro bias with the QUEST observation model

The loss function for the Wahba attitude estimation problem employs unit vector observations with scalar weights. It is usually associated with the QUEST observation model, where the actual sensor noise is assumed the same for all components of the observed vector, regardless of the position in the field of view. The QUEST model has the great advantage of being sensor-independent except for the scalar parameter that characterizes the sensor errors. Although efficient algorithms for solving the Wahba problem exist, extending these algorithms to estimate gyro biases or sensor alignments has had mixed success. However, it is straightforward to estimate bias and alignment parameters with a Kalman filter. This paper investigates the use of an extended Kalman filter for the attitude and gyro bias that incorporates the QUEST observation model, to be referred to as the Unit Vector Filter (UVF). The UVF results are compared with those from a more conventional filter, the Real-Time Sequential Filter (RTSF), for which the residual is the two-dimensional projection of the unit vector onto the plane perpendicular to the sensor boresight. The RTSF is similar in design to that used by Multimission Modular Spacecraft for onboard attitude determination. An apparent obstacle to the use of unit vectors as measurements is their singular noise covariance matrix. Shuster has shown that this problem should not affect filter performance. The UVF and RTSF are tested using actual flight data from the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). It is found that these filters generate nearly identical attitude and gyro bias estimates, thus validating the use of unit vectors and the QUEST noise model.
