Mauka Energy FEVER Tool Dataset

Mauka Energy’s dataset, developed under the Forestry Electric Vehicle Energy Routing (FEVER) project and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Small Business Innovation Research program, is a high-resolution geospatial resource designed to support energy modeling for electric log trucks in complex forestry environments. The dataset integrates detailed spatial and road network data to enable accurate simulation of vehicle performance across varied terrain. At its core, the dataset incorporates lidar-derived elevation models, road alignments, and surface classifications from Oregon State University’s McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. These data capture fine-scale variations in slope, curvature, and surface conditions across forest road systems, allowing for vehicle-level analysis of energy consumption and recovery. The dataset also includes data collected on the surrounding public and private road networks in Benton County, Oregon, used in real-world haul routes. These connecting segments provide critical context for modeling transitions between forest operations and regional transportation infrastructure, incorporating attributes such as grade profiles, elevation change, and speed constraints. This combined dataset underpins the development of Mauka Energy’s rolldown tool, which quantifies energy use and regenerative braking potential on downhill and variable-grade segments. By leveraging high-resolution terrain and road data, the FEVER project enables more accurate assessment of electric vehicle feasibility and performance in forestry applications.

Foliar element determination from field survey in association with the National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform survey, East River, Colorado 2018

The purpose of this dataset is to support research aimed at understanding the coupling between hydrologic and biogeochemical processes at watershed scale, particularly the relationship between aboveground vegetation characteristics and subsurface soil properties. These data are intended to inform and calibrate models of catchment-scale biogeochemical fluxes, including rock-derived nutrient cycling, and they were procured to address the following questions: (1) What is the distribution of vegetation characteristics across the study catchments? (2) Are foliar concentrations of rock-derived nutrients related to underlying lithology and soil availability, or are these signals masked by biotic nutrient cycling and retention processes? This data package contains foliar elemental data collected during the 2018 National Ecological Observatory Networks (NEON) Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) imaging spectroscopy and lidar surveys in Gunnison County, Colorado. Folair samples were collected across the East River, Washington Gulch, Slate River, and Coal Creek watersheds and contain a mixture of vegetation including meadow, shrub, and tree foliar samples. The samples were processed using aqua regia digestion and analyzed for elemental determination on inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).The data package includes: (1) raw foliar elemental data files in CSV and PDF formats, (2) quality control certificates in PDF format, and (3) an aggregated CSV file containing all elemental measurements compiled across samples. No specialized software is required to access or use these files.

Multi-Scale Lithofacies and Chemostratigraphic Analysis of Two Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale Wells in Northern West Virginia, USA

The Marcellus Shale Energy and Environmental Laboratory (MSEEL) consists of two project areas within the dry gas producing region of the Marcellus shale play in Monongalia County, West Virginia. MSEEL is a collaborative field project led by West Virginia University, with Northeast Natural Energy LLC, several industrial partners, and sponsored by the US Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory. The study areas are drilled approximately 8.5 miles apart to better understand the vertical and lateral changes in stratigraphy over a short distance. Two vertical pilot wells, MIP-3H and Boggess 17H were drilled in the fall of 2015 and spring of 2019, respectively. Core was recovered from the MIP-3H (API: 47-061-01707-00-00) 112 feet (34m) between depths of 7445 to 7557 feet, and from the Boggess 17H (API: 47-061-01812-00-00) 139 feet (42m) between depths of 7908 and 8012 ft. A full suite of triple combo (gamma ray, neutron, density logs), image logs, and advanced logging tools were run in both wells and calibrated to core analysis. Core analysis includes medical computed tomography (CT) scans, mineralogy and chemostratigraphy determined from handheld X-Ray fluorescence (hhXRF) and X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements, and determination of total organic content (TOC). Lithofacies were determined at core-scale using traditional core description techniques and medical CT-scan images. Log-scale facies are based on mineralogy and TOC data and developed using petrophysical logging data calibrated to core data (XRD and pyrolysis data). Chemostratigraphic analysis utilized hhXRF data to determine the major and trace element trends in the cores. In the two wells six shale lithofacies were recognized at the core and log scale. Both wells show organic-rich facies (TOC > 6.5%) primarily in the middle and lower Marcellus, with a slight decrease in thickness of this interval in the Boggess 17H. This interval is interpreted as an increase in paleo-productivity (increased Ni, Zn, and V), decreased sedimentation (decreased detrital proxies), and anoxic to euxinic conditions (increased Mo and chalcophile elements). Paleo-redox conditions in both wells are dynamic throughout deposition transitioning between euxinic/anoxic to dysoxic/oxic. This trend is seen through elemental proxies and calcite/pyrite concretion distributions.
