Virtual Framework for Science Federations with Instruments Access and Control

Experimental science workflows require federations of geographically dispersed science instruments and computing systems connected over a wide-area network. We develop a Virtual Infrastructure Twin (VIT) framework, which is a digital twin of the physical infrastructure that utilizes network virtualization and containerization technologies to support the development and testing of science workflow codes. Using VIT, we illustrate the access to instruments via EPICS system and the orchestration of containerized computations across federation computing systems. We also present a machine learning method to convert VIT throughput measurements to closely match the corresponding physical testbed measurements.

Equitable Access to Community Solar: Program Design and Subscription Considerations

Over 2.7 GWac community solar has been installed in the U.S. as of 2020, and 44% (1.2 GWac ) were installed after 2018, which indicates a fast-growing segment of the solar market .Community solar refers to a system that allows customers to subscribe part of a solar PV system and receive credit on their electricity bills based on power production. Although the growth of community solar market makes accessing solar energy easier, low and moderate income (LMI) potential subscribers may still face challenges, such as no or low credit scores. To investigate the program designs and subscription considerations for LMI customers, we provide a summary of existing state-level low-income community solar policies, as well as estimated LMI capacity and subscribers in the U.S.

Accessibility and Availability of Gas Stations for Liquid Fuel Supply During Severe Weather Events

Energy infrastructure is a pivotal lifeline with wider inter-dependencies. Electric power is essential to the continued functioning of critical assets; liquid fuels and other physical primary energy commodities that are used to supply the local energy needs of these assets during extreme events when electricity infrastructure is compromised. During Superstorm Sandy, the disruption of fuel supplies in the Tri-state area necessitated increasing situational awareness about oil and natural gas (ONG) systems to redirect fuel supplies to first responders and for restoration efforts. During winter storm events over the past several years, the demand for ONG for heating and power generation has skyrocketed in the north-east, which subsequently had caused ONG price to hit their highest level in years. ONG is a major energy source for restoration and recovery activities. However, very little, if any, situational awareness information about ONG supply and demand is available to those coordinating emergency efforts. Often this lack of information is due to the decentralized nature of the ONG supply chain and proprietary data maintained by private entities. To understand the impact of fuel availability on response and recovery efforts, this research focuses on (i) determining the accessibility to gas stations for liquid fuel supply across space and time, and (ii) examining the spatio-temporal variation of fuel availability and demand during extreme weather events. The broader scope of the project focuses on providing spatio-temporal situational awareness information about ONG availability and demand across the fuel supply chain for positioning of resources for response activities.

Scalable access to shared files in a distributed system

Logic may pre-populate cache of compute nodes allocated to a user's session. Logic may access an image file of a global filesystem, the image file to comprise a first set of one or more files associated with a user session and a second set of one or more files upon which execution of the first set will depend. Logic may store the image file in local data storage of each compute node of a spanning tree of compute nodes allocated for the user session. Logic may unpack the image file based on the data. Logic may configure the local environment of each compute node in the spanning tree to identify a location in local memory of each of the files. And logic may initiate execution of a local filesystem service in each of the compute nodes of the spanning tree.

Hydrogen Storage System Modeling: Public Access, Maintenance, and Enhancements

The hydrogen storage system modeling project aims to develop new and enhance existing material-based hydrogen storage system models and make them accessible to the research community through a public web page. Updating existing storage systems models supports material developers in evaluating the performance of their new materials in mobile and stationary applications relative to the available DOE Technical Targets. Developing new tools helps researchers evaluate the performance of hydrogen storage materials developed under HyMARC activities or other fundamental hydrogen storage materials discovery research. New models will also work for validating alternatives to material-based systems (liquefied & gaseous hydrogen), comparing various mobile and stationary use cases, and expand to include medium-, heavy-duty, and mining vehicles and stationary application(s).

Controlling accesses to a branch prediction unit for sequences of fetch groups

An electronic device is described that handles control transfer instructions (CTIs) when executing instructions in program code. The electronic device has a processor that includes a branch prediction functional block and a sequential fetch logic functional block. The sequential fetch logic functional block determines, based on a record associated with a CTI, that a specified number of fetch groups of instructions that were previously determined to include no CTIs are to be fetched for execution in sequence following the CTI. When each of the specified number of fetch groups is fetched and prepared for execution, the sequential fetch logic prevents corresponding accesses of the branch prediction functional block for acquiring branch prediction information for instructions in that fetch group.

Employment access assessed using the mobility energy productivity (MEP) metric

Transit agencies, local governments, employers, and job-seekers have a shared interest in connecting residents with jobs in an affordable and time efficient manner, with public agencies also caring about energy efficiency and air quality. Employment hubs are an opportunity to solve the spatial mismatch between homes of job-seekers and the locations of desirable jobs. Such is the case in Columbus, Ohio, between Rickenbacker Industrial Park and the Linden neighborhood, which has experienced persistent poverty. Using the mobility energy productivity (MEP) metric to examine travel time, cost, and energy efficiency, we show current transit service is undesirable due to excessive travel time (70 min, MEP = 0), while driving alone (MEP = 0.20) may be less desirable than a hypothetical, fare-free microtransit service (MEP = 0.23). Updating MEP to use locally-derived input data can help identify parameters under which providing microtransit service in a specific place has compelling benefits in terms of vehicle energy efficiency as well as cost and travel time for riders.

Solar cities: A case study analysis of city-level enablers of expanded solar energy access

Rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption can benefit households by reducing electricity bills and enhancing energy resiliency. Low and moderate-income (LMI) households have been less likely to adopt PV and experience these benefits in the United States than higher-income households. Adopter income trends are often explored through quantitative analysis with limited explanatory power. Our quantitative analysis only explains around one-third of city-level variation in LMI adoption trends through socioeconomic factors such as median home values and income inequality and PV market factors such as cumulative adoption and incentives. We implement semi-structured interviews in three case studies of cities with relatively high rates of LMI PV adoption to better understand the factors that explain PV adopter income trends. The case studies partly reiterate findings from quantitative analysis, such as the role of PV incentives. The case studies reveal a broader set of LMI adoption drivers that are missed in quantitative analyses. The case studies show how city contexts can affect LMI adoption, such as the role of supportive city governments. The case studies also reveal the importance of partnerships, such as partnerships between city governments and state LMI PV program implementers. Finally, interviewees emphasized the importance of building trust among prospective LMI PV adopters. Interviewees suggested that partnerships, outreach, and consumer protection measures were crucial to building trust in PV installers among LMI households.
