Inherent Problems in Designing Two-Failure Tolerant Electromechanical Actuators

An electromechanical ac-powered rotary actuated four-bar linkage system for rotating the Shuttle/Centaur deployment adapter is described. The essential features of the deployment adapter rotation system (DARS) are increased reliability for mission success and maximum practical hazard control for safety. The requirements, concept development, hardware configuration, quality assurance provisions, and techniques used to meet two-fault tolerance requirements are highlighted. The rationale used to achieve a degree of safety equivalent of that of two-failure tolerance is presented. Conditions that make this approach acceptable, including single failure point components with regard to redundancy versus credibility of failure modes, are also discussed.

SPIKE-2: a Practical Stirling Engine for Kilowatt Level Solar Power

Recent advances in the art of free piston Stirling engine design make possible the production of 1-10kW free piston Stirling linear alternator engine, hermetically sealed, efficient, durable and simple in construction and operation. Power output is in the form of single or three phase 60 Hz. AC, or DC. The three phase capability is available from single machines without need of external conditioning. Engine voltage control regains set voltage within 5 cycles in response to any load change. The existing SPIKE-2 design has an engine alternator efficiency of 25% at 650 C heater wall temperature and a service life of over three years in solar service. The same system can be scaled over a range of at least 100 watts to 25kW.

Qualification testing for a central station

Qualification testing for a Central Station Photovoltaic (PV) Facility depends to a great extent on the system design, (fixed versus tracking), and the level of data acquisition/control which is incorporated into the system. The basic elements which require qualification tests include: dc power production/collection; tracker conversion systems; ac utility interface; system level control; and data acquisition/reporting. The qualification tests from the Lungo (ARCO) 1 MW Facility which were completed in January 1983 are discussed. The philosophy and many of the procedures are applicable to any central station PV facility.

Stand-alone flat-plate photovoltaic power systems: System sizing and life-cycle costing methodology for Federal agencies

A simple methodology to estimate photovoltaic system size and life-cycle costs in stand-alone applications is presented. It is designed to assist engineers at Government agencies in determining the feasibility of using small stand-alone photovoltaic systems to supply ac or dc power to the load. Photovoltaic system design considerations are presented as well as the equations for sizing the flat-plate array and the battery storage to meet the required load. Cost effectiveness of a candidate photovoltaic system is based on comparison with the life-cycle cost of alternative systems. Examples of alternative systems addressed are batteries, diesel generators, the utility grid, and other renewable energy systems.

Three-phase power factor controller with induced EMF sensing

A power factor controller for an ac induction motor is provided which is of the type comprising thyristor switches connected in series with the motor, phase detectors for sensing the motor current and voltage and providing an output proportional to the phase difference between the motor voltage and current, and a control circuit, responsive to the output of the phase detector and to a power factor command signal, for controlling switching of the thyristor. The invention involves sensing the induced emf produced by the motor during the time interval when the thyristor is off and for producing a corresponding feedback signal for controlling switching of the thyristor. The sensed emf is also used to enhance soft starting of the motor.

Inertial Energy Storage for Spacecraft

The feasibility of inertial energy storage in a spacecraft power system is evaluated on the basis of a conceptual integrated design that encompasses a composite rotor, magnetic suspension and a permanent magnet (PM) motor/generator for a 3-kW orbital average payload at a bus distribution voltage of 250 volts dc. The conceptual design, is referred to as a Mechanical Capacitor. The baseline power system configuration selected is a series system employing peak-power-tracking for a Low Earth-Orbiting application. Power processing, required in the motor/generator, provides potential alternative that can only be achieved in systems with electrochemical energy storage by the addition of power processing components. One such alternative configuration provides for peak-power-tracking of the solar array and still maintains a regulated bus, without the expense of additional power processing components. Precise speed control of the two counterrotating wheels is required to reduce interaction with the attitude control system (ACS) or alternatively, used to perform attitude control functions.

A Battery Charger and State of Charge Indicator

A battery charger which has a full wave rectifier in series with a transformer isolated 20 kHz dc-dc converter with high frequency switches, which are programmed to actively shape the input dc line current to be a mirror image of the ac line voltage is discussed. The power circuit operates at 2 kW peak and 1 kW average power. The BC/SCI has two major subsystems: (1) the battery charger power electronics with its controls; and (2) a microcomputer subsystem which is used to acquire battery terminal data and exercise the state of charge software programs. The state of charge definition employed is the energy remaining in the battery when extracted at a 10 kW rate divided by the energy capacity of a fully charged new battery. The battery charger circuit is an isolated boost converter operating at an internal frequency of 20 kHz. The switches selected for the battery charger are the single most important item in determining its efficiency. The combination of voltage and current requirements dictate the use of high power NPN Darlington switching transistors. The power circuit topology is a three switch design which utilizes a power FET on the center tap of the isolation transformer and the power Darlingtons on each of the two ends. An analog control system is employed to accomplish active input current waveshaping as well as the necessary regulation.

Phase sensitive guidance sensor for wire-following vehicles

A guidance sensor for a wire-following vehicle which is phase sensitive, includes an array of coils positioned to sense the vertical component of a magnetic field produced by the ac current through the guidance wire. The outputs of the coils are fed to associated flip flops. Flip flops associated with coils, through which flux passes in one direction, e.g., up, are driven to one state, e.g., true, and flip flops associated with coils through which flux passes in the opposite direction, e.g., down, are driven to a false state. The control signal to guide the vehicle over the wire is a function of the number of flip flops in the true state. Circuitry is included to prevent flip flops from assuming a wrong state due to noise.

ULF/ELF waves and turbulence in the high-altitude dayside magnetosphere

Three groups of waves appear to be characteristic of the dayside high-lattitude magnetosphere, in view of AC electric field measurements made by polar-orbiting satellites: (1) ULF/ELF broadband noise, whose region of peak intensity is generally found to be consistent with the latitudinal extension of the cusp; (2) VLF hiss, which although present in the cusp region extends outside the established cusp projection; and (3) narrow-band ELF emissions, covering frequencies betwen 200 Hz and 1 kHz, on the equatorward side of the cusp. This classification of the waves is independent of the magnetic disturbance level. Attention is given to the manner in which the appearance of the ULF/ELF noise and the narrow-band ELF emissions can be used to localize the solar cusp position.

The plasma wave environment of an auroral arc - Electrostatic ion cyclotron waves in the diffuse aurora

Electric field plasma wave observations were made with a sounding rocket payload in and near a quiet auroral arc. This payload was launched on March 9, 1978 from Poker Flat, Alaska. The payload trajectory was close to the magnetic meridian and passed over a 40 kR auroral arc. The present investigation is concerned with ac electric field observations in the ELF and lower VLF covering a frequency range from 2.5 Hz to 8 kHz. Attention is given to aspects of instrumentation, the general situation, a data analysis, and the obtained results. Waves were observed at low altitude in a region of downward parallel current and diffuse aurora. These waves had properties consistent with those expected for hydrogen and oxygen electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) waves.

Remanent magnetization of a 'paramagnetic' composition in the ilmenite-hematite solid solution stress

In the ilmenite-hematite solid solution series, compositions more ilmenite-rich than Ilm(73)Hem(27) are classically thought to be paramagnetic at room temperature. Ilm(80)Hem(20) samples have nevertheless been synthesized that acquire hard saturation remanent and thermoremanent moments. From analysis of AC demagnetization data, the source of the measured remanence is believed to be a single-domain (SD) like material within the IlM(80)Hem(20) grains themselves. On the basis of transmission electron microscope observations, it is suggested that transformation-induced domain boundaries, which in part are enriched in hematite component relative to the bulk composition of the grains, could act as the magnetic carrier of the SD-like remanence.

The LSLE echocardiograph - Commercial hardware aboard Spacelab

The Life Sciences Laboratory Equipment Echocardiograph, a commercial 77020AC Ultrasound Imaging System modified to meet NASA's spacecraft standards, is described. The assembly consists of four models: display and control, scanner, scan converter, and physioamplifiers. Four separate processors communicate over an IEE-488 bus, and the system has more than 6000 individual components on 35 printed circuit cards. Three levels of self test are provided: a short test during power up, a basic test initiated by a front panel switch, and interactive tests for specific routines. Default mode operation further enhances reliability. Modifications of the original system include the replacement of ac power supplies with dc to dc converters, a slide-out keyboard (to prevent accidental operation), Teflon insulated wire, and additional shielding for the ultrasound transducer cable.

Landsat thematic mapper attitude data processing

The Landsat 4 and 5 satellites carry a new, high resolution, seven band thematic mapper imaging instrument. The spacecraft also carry two types of attitude sensors: a gyroscopic internal reference unit (IRU) which senses angular rate from dc to about 2 Hz, and an AC-coupled angular displacement sensor (ADS) measuring angular deviation above 2 Hz. A description of the derivation of the crossover network used to combine and equalize the IRU and ADS data is made. Also described are the digital data processing algorithms which produce the time history of the satellites' attitude motion including the finite impulse response (FIR) implementation of G and F filters; the resampling (interpolation/decimation) and synchronization of the IRU and ADS data; and the axis rotations required as a result of the on-board sensor locations on three orthogonal axes.

Effect of low-frequency ambient magnetic fields on the control unit and RF head of a commercial SQUID magnetometer

The control unit and RF head of the SHE model 330XRFSQUID system are shown to be sensitive to ambient ac magnetic fields below 1 HZ, which cause the appearance of false signals corresponding to a magnetometer signal of 0.000001 phi(0) per gauss of field applied. The control unit shows a sensitivity that is linear with frequency, suggesting that the signal is generated by Faraday induction. In contrast, the RF head response is independent of frequency and shows a strong second-harmonic coversion. This response may be due to the magnetic field sensitivity of the ferrite core inductor in the tuned amplifier of the RF head. These signals induced by ambient fields are a potential source of error in Stanford's Relativity Gyroscope experiment, which uses SQUID's on board a rolling satellite as part of the gyroscope readout system. The extent of the magnetic field sensitivity in these components necessitates the use of additional magnetic shielding aboard the satellite.
