Development of a wideband wattmeter as a laboratory instrument

A portable, solid state, wideband wattmeter has been developed as a general purpose type of laboratory instrument. Its circuit and component investigations and evaluation data are presented. A prototype unit was used extensively, and served as the basis for a second instrument incorporating refined circuitry and improved packaging. The wattmeter provides true four quadrant operation which permits instantaneous indication of real power as an oscilloscope display. Major performance factors are: frequency bandwidth DC to 1 MHz plus or minus 1 db; current range 10 mA to 100 amperes peak; voltage range 1 volt to 1000 volts peak; accuracy plus or minus 2% of full scale reading. Oscilloscope data for typical switching transients in a transistor inverter circuit are included.

Miniature biotelemeter gives multichannel wideband biomedical data

A miniature biotelemeter was developed for sensing and transmitting multiple channels of biomedical data over a radio link. The design of this miniature, 10-channel, wideband (5 kHz/channel), pulse amplitude modulation/ frequency modulation biotelemeter takes advantage of modern device technology (e.g., integrated circuit operational amplifiers, complementary symmetry/metal oxide semiconductor logic, and solid state switches) and hybrid packaging techniques. The telemeter is being used to monitor 10 channels of neuron firings from specific regions of the brain in rats implanted with chronic electrodes. Design, fabrication, and testing of an engineering model biotelemeter are described.

Multipath performance of a TDRS system employing wideband FM VHF signals

An approximate theoretical analysis is presented for the effects of specular reflection multipath on the performance of a one-way tracking and data relay satellite-to-user link. The analysis pertains to the wideband FM system employing a sinusoidal subcarrier to achieve spectrum spreading. Bounds on multipath effects are derived for receivers with and without limiters and for data modulated on the carrier or the subcarrier. For data modulation, performance is evaluated in terms of an additive lowpass signal at the data detection filter. Doppler and range tracking performance is evaluated in terms of root-mean-square (RMS) error of carrier frequency in a carrier PLL and rms phase jitter in a subcarrier PLL.

Modifications of the wideband FM TDRS system

The wideband FM scheme for the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) system is discussed. The technique achieves a spread-spectrum advantage against multipath and interference through the inclusion of a large deviation FM subcarrier. The signal also permits co-channel spread-spectrum multipath access (SSMA) on the downlink from mission spacecraft to TDRS. Each user is assigned a unique combination of carrier and subcarrier which allows the ground receiver to separate user signals with overlapping spectra. The system was modified by the addition of a low-deviation fine range tone to both the uplink and the downlink, separate from the wide-deviation subcarrier. The magnitude of the interference components due to other SSMA signals are analyzed. A carrier and subcarrier frequency plan was worked out based on the modified signal format. A configuration to accommodate 42 and 60 users is described. The inclusion of ambiguity resolving ranging sidetones is also discussed.

Miniature biotelemeter giving 10 channels of wideband biomedical data.

A miniature biotelemeter has been developed for sensing and transmitting multiple channels of wideband biomedical data over a radio link. Its small size and weight make it capable of being carried by free-moving laboratory animals as small as rats. Ten data channels each of 5-kHz data bandwidth are provided to permit monitoring of a wide variety of physiological signals. Multichannel telemetry of electroencephalograms, electrocardiograms, electromyograms, state functions, and dynamic processes such as blood flow and body chemistry are possible applications. Utilization of newly available monolithic chip components, low-power COS/MOS MSI digital logic, and state-of-the-art hybrid mounting techniques makes this novel device useful for both research and clinical bioinstrumentation.

Wideband infrared heterodyne receiver front-end

A 10.6 micron infrared heterodyne receiver front end was developed for use in a wideband CO2 laser communications link. The infrared receiver employs an 850 MHz response PV HgCdTe photomixer which is mounted in a space quality housing, a low-noise 5 to 1500 MHz IF preamplifier, and a remote control panel. The receiver was designed to handle + or - 750 MHz of Doppler shift while providing an instantaneous information bandwidth of 400 MHz. The measured receiver sensitivity NEP was 1.0 x 10 to the 19th power W/Hz for a photomixer temperature of T sub m = 77 K and an IF beat frequency of 20 MHz and degraded to 1.75 x 10 to the 19th power W/Hz for T sub m = 130 K.

Wideband infrared receiver backend

The design, operation, and configuration of the receiver backend for a wideband infrared tracking receiver are described. A squaring loop is incorporated into the receiver design to enable it to track the Doppler shifted carrier which is Phase Shift Keyed modulated. The receiver has a 400 MHz instantaneous bandwidth and tracks signals whose carrier frequency at the backend input is between 200 and 900 MHz with frequency variation rates greater than 20 MHz/second. The output data is compatible with MECL 3 logic.

Space Shuttle communications - Wideband direct link signal and system design

This paper describes the design of a wideband S-band communications link from the Space Shuttle Orbiter to a ground-based terminal. This link will be used for transmission of television, digital data (various rates), or analog data, and is of interest because of the presence of bandwidth, power, and hardware constraints. The procedure followed to arrive at an overall signal and system design is outlined, and system performance margins are presented for various operational configurations. Finally, the growth potential of this link for digital data transmission is discussed.

The 1.06 micrometer wideband laser modulator: Fabrication and life testing

The design, fabrication, testing and delivery of an optical modulator which will operate with a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 micrometers were performed. The system transfers data at a nominal rate of 400 Mbps. This wideband laser modulator can transmit either Pulse Gated Binary Modulation (PGBM) or Pulse Polarization Binary Modulation (PPBM) formats. The laser beam enters the modulator and passes through both crystals; approximately 1% of the transmitted beam is split from the main beam and analyzed for the AEC signal; the remaining part of the beam exits the modulator. The delivered modulator when initially aligned and integrated with laser and electronics performed very well. The optical transmission was 69.5%. The static extinction ratio was 69:1. A 1000 hour life test was conducted with the delivered modulator. A 63 bit pseudorandom code signal was used as a driver input. At the conclusion of the life test the modulator optical transmission was 71.5% and the static extinction ratio 65:1.

Coherence properties of wideband satellite signals caused by ionospheric scintillation

Radio scintillation on satellite signals caused by small-scale irregularities in F-region ionospheric electron density can be an important limitation on earth-satellite communication and navigation systems. Scintillation imposes distortion in both amplitude and phase on wideband signals. In the present work, the shallow-modulated phase screen theory is developed in terms of coherence bandwidth including a model based on a turbulent-like power-law description of the irregularities. The model results usually show a greater coherence bandwidth in the signal phase than in the signal amplitude. Therefore, systems that require phase coherence over a large bandwidth should be less affected than those requiring amplitude coherence.

A gated, wideband magnetic direction finder for lightning return strokes

A magnetic direction finder has been developed which utilizes only the initial few microseconds of wideband return stroke waveforms to provide accurate directions to the channel bases of lightning discharges to ground. Bearing errors are minimized because, near the ground, most channels tend to be straight and vertical with no large branches or horizontal sections. Tests on a number of lightning storms at distances of 10 to 100 km indicate the angular resolution is in the range 1-2 deg, with little or no systematic dependence on azimuth or distance.

Survey of timing/synchronization of operating wideband digital communications networks

In order to benefit from experience gained from the synchronization of operational wideband digital networks, a survey was made of three such systems: Data Transmission Company, Western Union Telegraph Company, and the Computer Communications Group of the Trans-Canada Telephone System. The focus of the survey was on deployment and operational experience from a practical (as opposed to theoretical) viewpoint. The objective was to provide a report on the results of deployment how the systems performed, and wherein the performance differed from that predicted or intended in the design. It also attempted to determine how the various system designers would use the benefit of hindsight if they could design those same systems today.
