Initial Characterization of Active Transitioning Centaur, P/2019 LD{sub 2} (ATLAS), Using Hubble, Spitzer, ZTF, Keck, Apache Point Observatory, and GROWTH Visible and Infrared Imaging and Spectroscopy

We present visible and mid-infrared imagery and photometry of temporary Jovian co-orbital comet P/2019 LD{sub 2} taken with Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3), Spitzer Space Telescope/Infrared Array Camera (Spitzer/IRAC), and the GROWTH telescope network, visible spectroscopy from Keck/Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS), and archival Zwicky Transient Facility observations taken between 2019 April and 2020 August. Our observations indicate that the nucleus of LD{sub 2} has a radius between 0.2 and 1.8 km assuming a 0.08 albedo and a coma dominated by ∼100 μm-scale dust ejected at ∼1 m s{sup −1} speeds with a ∼1′ jet pointing in the southwest direction. LD{sub 2} experienced a total dust mass loss of ∼10{sup 8} kg at a loss rate of ∼6 kg s{sup −1} with Afρ/cross section varying between ∼85 cm/125 km{sup 2} and ∼200 cm/310 km{sup 2} from 2019 April 9 to 2019 November 8. If the increase in Afρ/cross section remained constant, it implies LD{sub 2}'s activity began ∼2018 November when within 4.8 au of the Sun, implying the onset of H{sub 2}O sublimation. We measure CO/CO{sub 2} gas production of ≲10{sup 27} mol s{sup −1}/≲10{sup 26} mol s{sup −1} from our 4.5 μm Spitzer observations; g–r = 0.59 ± 0.03, r–i = 0.18 ± 0.05, and i–z = 0.01 ± 0.07 from GROWTH observations; and H{sub 2}O gas production of ≲80 kg s{sup −1} scaling from our estimated C {sub 2} production of Q{sub C{sub 2}}≲7.5×10{sup 24} mol s{sup −1} from Keck/LRIS spectroscopy. We determine that the long-term orbit of LD{sub 2} is similar to Jupiter-family comets having close encounters with Jupiter within ∼0.5 Hill radius in the last ∼3 y and within 0.8 Hill radius in ∼9 y. Additionally, 78.8% of our orbital clones are ejected from the solar system within 1 × 10{sup 6} yr, having a dynamical half-life of 3.4 × 10{sup 5} yr.

Simultaneous measurement of visible energy and momentum transfer in anti-electron neutrino interactions on hydrocarbon

Precise knowledge of neutrino interaction cross sections is required for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Precision neutrino oscillation measurements require inference of the neutrino energy and flavor from the visible particles in the neutrino interaction in the detector. This inference is different for the true neutrino flavors measured, electron and muon neutrinos, and can be studied by observation of neutrino interactions in an experiment’s near detector. However, anti-electron neutrinos make up only a few percent of an anti-muon neutrino beam and pose a challenge in making cross section measurements and predictions. The reported measurements were made using data from MINERvA, a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment, with an anti-neutrino beam configuration of mean energy ~ 6 GeV. This thesis provides two double-differential cross sections of anti-electron neutrino inclusive charged-current reactions using the kinematics of visible energy, three-momentum transfer, and transverse momentum. The analysis is carried out at low three-momentum transfer, making it sensitive to regions with multi-nucleon effects.

Hydrazone-Linked Heptazine Polymeric Carbon Nitrides for Synergistic Visible-Light-Driven Catalysis

Heptazine-based conjugated polymeric carbon nitrides (PCNs) are promising metal-free photocatalysts, yet their synthesis is challenging due to the electron-deficiency and insolubility of heptazine units. Indeed, heptazine-containing polymers have only been prepared through nucleophilic substitution with amines by using toxic cyameluric chloride as the starting material. Herein, we report the novel and environmentally friendly method for preparing heptazine-based mesoporous PCNs with hydrazone links formed through a simple Schiff base condensation of melem-NH 2 and aldehydes. Unlike cyameluric chloride, melem-NH 2 is non-toxic, stable, and can be readily obtained from melem and hydrazine in solution. We demonstrate that the hydrazone linkages and the heptazine units synergistically enhance the photocatalytic activity of PCNs in visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. In particular, the polymer constructed from melem-NH2 and p-phthalaldehyde shows 17 times more activity than graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ).

Enhanced visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate activation on cobalt-doped mesoporous iron oxide for orange II degradation

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) attracted a lot of attention due to their capability and adaptability in wastewater treatment. Although heterogeneous cobalt-based catalysts have been extensively studied and have emerged superior for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, leaching of cobalt is still a major concern. Herein, we report a photo-assisted PMS activation approach using cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide with exceptional activity and stability up to 7 cycles with very low cobalt leaching (0.5 ppm). The highest activity was obtained by 1 mol % cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide. Orange II dye was completely degraded by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated under visible light irradiation within 1 min. ROS were evaluated using two distinct techniques (Fluorescence probes and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). ROS quenching experiments were also used to highlight the dominant pathway. This study correlates the structural and electronic changes induced with cobalt doping to the exceptional activity.

Visibility-enhanced model-free deep reinforcement learning algorithm for voltage control in realistic distribution systems using smart inverters

Increasing integration of distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) into distribution networks could result in adverse effects on grid operation. Traditional model-based control algorithms require accurate model information that is difficult to acquire and thus are challenging to implement in practice. Here, this paper proposes a surrogate model-enabled grid visibility scheme to empower deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach for distribution network voltage regulation using PV inverters with minimal system knowledge. In contrast to existing DRL methods, this paper presents and corroborates the adverse impact of missing load information on DRL performance and, based on this finding, proposes a surrogate model methodology to impute load information utilizing observable data. Additionally, a multi-fidelity neural network is utilized to construct the DRL training environment, chosen for its efficient data utilization and enhanced robustness to data uncertainty. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are assessed by considering DRL testing across varying degrees of observable load information and diverse training environments on a realistic power system.

Zero-biased and visible-blind UV photodetectors based on nitrogen-doped ultrananocrystalline diamond nanowires

Taking advantage of the superflat surface of ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD), highly precise UNCD nanowire (NW) arrays were fabricated to develop high-performance UV photodetectors. The large surface-to-volume ratio of a nanowire significantly increases the number of surface trap states, and the reduced dimensionality effectively confines the active area of the charge carrier and shortens the transit time, which results in an enhanced photoconductivity and response speed. Here, in this paper, the zero-biased UV photodetectors based on nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond nanowire arrays have been demonstrated and characterized. The estimated responsivity was 2.0 A/W for 350 nm incident light when the device operated at room temperature. The UVA and UVB photocurrent signals from this visible blind photodetector were well defined with a rise and decay time of less than 1 s.

Visible Out-of-plane Polarized Luminescence and Electronic Resonance in Black Phosphorus

Black phosphorus (BP) is unique among layered materials because of its homonuclear lattice and strong structural anisotropy. While recent investigations on few-layer BP have extensively explored the in-plane (a, c) anisotropy, much less attention has been given to the out-of-plane direction (b). Here, the optical response from bulk BP is probed using polarization-resolved photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE), and resonant Raman scattering along the zigzag, out-of-plane, and armchair directions. An unexpected b-polarized luminescence emission is detected in the visible, far above the fundamental gap. PLE indicates that this emission is generated through b-polarized excitation at 2.3 eV. The same electronic resonance is observed in resonant Raman with the enhancement of the A g phonon modes scattering efficiency. These experimental results are fully consistent with DFT calculations of the permittivity tensor elements and demonstrate the remarkable extent to which the anisotropy influences the optical properties and carrier dynamics in black phosphorus.

Detection of Foreign Materials on Broiler Breast Meat Using a Fusion of Visible Near-Infrared and Short-Wave Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging

Foreign material (FM) found on a poultry product lowers the quality and safety of the product. We developed a fusion method combining two hyperspectral imaging (HSI) modalities in the visible-near infrared (VNIR) range of 400–1000 nm and the short-wave infrared (SWIR) range of 1000–2500 nm for the detection of FMs on the surface of fresh raw broiler breast fillets. Thirty different types of FMs that could be commonly found in poultry processing plants were used as samples and prepared in two different sizes (5 × 5 mm 2 and 2 × 2 mm 2 ). The accuracies of the developed Fusion model for detecting 2 × 2 mm 2 pieces of polymer, wood, and metal were 95%, 95%, and 81%, respectively, while the detection accuracies of the Fusion model for detecting 5 × 5 mm 2 pieces of polymer, wood, and metal were all 100%. The performance of the Fusion model was higher than the VNIR- and SWIR-based detection models by 18% and 5%, respectively, when F1 scores were compared, and by 38% and 5%, when average detection rates were compared. The study results suggested that the fusion of two HSI modalities could detect FMs more effectively than a single HSI modality.

Design of 3D Oxide–Metal Hybrid Metamaterial for Tailorable Light–Matter Interactions in Visible and Near-Infrared Region

Dielectric–metallic hybrid metamaterials exhibit extraordinary optical properties due to the light–matter interactions at the dielectric–metallic interfaces. The ability in precision control of the light–matter interactions in nanoscale is key to tailor the optical properties of hybrid metamaterials. In this work, a complex 3D framework of multilayered self-assembled BaTiO 3 (BTO)-Au hybrid thin films is demonstrated with such precision control of the light–matter interaction in nanoscale. Here, unique “bamboo-like” Au nanostructures are formed via the bilayer and trilayer stacking of BTO-Au hybrid layers with interlayers of SrTiO 3 , CeO 2 , or MgO. Different film strain states introduced by the three interlayers result in variable diameter and density of Au nanopillars. Both simulated and experimental optical data demonstrate the localized surface plasmon resonance change and hyperbolic dispersion wavelength shift in visible to near-infrared because of the effective tuning of the Au nanopillar aspect ratio and free electron density. The highly tunable optical properties along with the ferroelectric behavior and thermal robustness of the 3D hybrid film enable it to be a great candidate for multifunctional applications. This study demonstrates a unique 3D approach for precision optical property tuning and combined functionalities in oxide–metal metamaterial systems toward future integrated photonic and electronic devices.

Mechanochemistry of Phosphorus and Arsenic Alloys for Visible and Infrared Photonics

Incorporating few‐layer 2D phosphorus–arsenic alloys (PAs) into optoelectronic devices requires a synthesis technique that allows control of the alloy composition while producing volumes of material suitable for application development such as photodetectors, solar cells, and lasers. With that goal in mind, high‐energy ball milling allows production of both orthorhombic (o‐PAs) and trigonal (t‐PAs) alloys by reacting red phosphorus and metallic arsenic powders. The synthesis follows a two‐step process in which arsenic rapidly reacts with red phosphorus to first produce t‐PAs followed by a slower phase transformation into o‐PAs; synthesis time and overall conversion rate are slightly enhanced by the presence of arsenic. Optical measurements on exfoliated alloys at the few‐layer atomic limit of the 2D PAs reveal emission spanning from the visible (≈1.9 eV) into the near‐infrared region, covering a broad application space. Rapid powder synthesis within a closed system for stochiometric control of the solid‐solution PAs alloys combined with solution‐based exfoliation opens up opportunities for a whole new class of optoelectronic devices based on PA nanomaterials.

Host Cavities Enhance the Photocatalytic Conversion of α‐Terpinene to Ascaridole Under Visible‐Light Irradiation

BODIPY-functionalized host molecules have been used as effective visible-light photosensitizers in the conversion of α-terpinene to ascaridole in the presence of molecular oxygen. Host-guest interactions enhance the effective local concentration of the substrate and singlet oxygen generated by the photosensitizing host. This results in up to a 28-fold increase in the rate of conversion depending on the host employed. A tetramethyl BODIPY analogue, in which guest access to the host cavity is blocked, was also employed to confirm that the cavities do indeed enhance substrate turnover. Whilst the latter photocatalyst is more efficient due to the suppression of nonradiative relaxation pathways associated with rotation of the meso-phenyl substituent, the rate enhancement induced by host-guest binding is not present. Combined, this provides insight for the future design of enhanced systems.

Characterization of PuO 2 With Visible and UV Raman Spectroscopy: Discrimination Between the Bulk, Surface, and an Intermediate Disordered Layer

Raman spectroscopy is an ideal tool in the characterization of materials including PuO 2 . The wavelength-dependent absorptivity of the material defines the light penetration depth and the relative Raman scattering contribution from the bulk and the surface. Here, the surface contribution to the total Raman scattering was investigated for PuO 2 calcined at various temperatures and recorded with laser wavelengths of 355, 325, and 244 nm. These experiments provided the first glimpse of the wavelength-dependent disappearance and emergence of new phonons and electronic bands from the PuO 2 surface layers. The first indication of the wavelength transition in the Raman spectra was the loss of the 2LO2 (overtone, ~1155 cm -1 ) band and the weakening intensity of the Г 1 → Γ 5 electronic band (~2135 cm -1 ) with the 355-nm excitation laser. The Γ 5 electronic band was barely visible with the 244-nm excitation. The electronic band located at ~1050 cm -1 , corresponding to the Г 1 → Γ 4 electronic transition was observed to dramatically increase in intensity while the Г 1 → Γ 3 electronic band (2640 cm -1 ) sharpened as the UV wavelength was increased in energy from the near- to deep-UV (355–325–244 nm). The FWHM of the T 2g band was found to vary with calcination temperature (450°C and 900°C) with the 325-nm laser and the 244-nm laser. The T 2g band attributes, the strong emergence of the Г 1 → Γ 4 electronic band, and the disappearance of the 2LO2 overtone acquired with the 244-nm excitation for the different calcination temperatures suggest a shallow penetration depth.

Crystal structures of inhibitor complexes of M‐PMV protease with visible flap loops

Abstract Mason‐Pfizer monkey virus protease (PR) was crystallized in complex with two pepstatin‐based inhibitors in P 1 space group. In both crystal structures, the extended flap loops that lock the inhibitor/substrate over the active site, are visible in the electron density either completely or with only small gaps, providing the first observation of the conformation of the flap loops in dimeric complex form of this retropepsin. The H‐bond network in the active site (with D26N mutation) differs from that reported for the P 2 1 crystal structures and is similar to a rarely occurring system in HIV‐1 PR.

Discovering Reactant Supply Pathways at Electrode/PEM Reaction Interfaces Via a Tailored Interface-Visible Characterization Cell

In situ and micro-scale visualization of electrochemical reactions and multiphase transports on the interface of porous transport electrode (PTE) materials and solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) has been one of the greatest challenges for electrochemical energy conversion devices, such as proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cells (PEMECs), CO 2 reduction electrolyzers, PEM fuel cells, etc. Here, an interface-visible characterization cell (IV-CC) is developed to in situ visualize micro-scaled and rapid electrochemical reactions and transports in PTE/SPE interfaces. Taking the PEMEC of a green hydrogen generator as a study case, the unanticipated local gas blockage, micro water droplets, and their evolution processes are successfully visualized on PTE/PEM interfaces in a practical PEMEC device, indicating the existence of unconventional reactant supply pathways in PEMs. Further comprehensive results reveal that PEM water supplies to reaction interfaces are significantly impacted with current densities. Here these results provide critical insights about the reaction interface optimization and mass transport enhancement in various electrochemical energy conversion devices.

Semi-visible jets + X: illuminating dark showers with radiation

We investigate the potential to search for semi-visible jets (SVJs) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using initial-state radiation (ISR). Both photon ISR and jet ISR channels are considered, using a benchmark signal model with the decay of a leptophobic Z$^{′}$ mediator forming two SVJs. We compare and extend several techniques to decompose the missing transverse momentum into per-jet contributions, in order to reconstruct the mediator mass and to define a new observable measuring the fraction of invisible dark hadrons. The presence of ISR facilitates the identification of the SVJs, and the resulting boost improves the resolution of the observables, especially for models with high invisible fractions. We combine the two observables to propose a complete search strategy and discuss an extension of the strategy to probe the whole model parameter space.

Attention-based 3D – convolutional neural network model for mechanical property predictions using visible light images in metal additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM), while commonly used for rapid prototyping and creating components with complex geometries, has not been widely adopted for critical applications across the aerospace, automotive, defense, energy, and medical industries. This is, in part, due to the challenges of controlling flaws and uncertainty in the mechanical behavior of additively manufactured components. In recent years, there has been an increase in research aimed at predicting the final mechanical properties of additively manufactured components during the printing process. To address these issues, a 3D-CNN model was trained using low-cost in situ visible-light camera data, anomaly classifications, and the chosen process parameters to predict the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS), total elongation (TE), and uniform elongation (UE). The 3D-CNN layers of the model employed attention mechanisms to prioritize features in the data, thereby improving prediction accuracy. Furthermore, the effect of each process parameter and anomaly class is investigated using attention-based dynamic sigmoid weighted gates to interpret the influence each class has on the final prediction. Different combinations of the in situ data were fed into the 3D-CNN, with varying amounts of image layers, to determine the ideal combination for predicting mechanical properties in situ. Here, the 3D-CNN model achieved mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) below 5% for both UTS and YS while using only a single camera input and under half of the available image layers.

High performance graphene-like thinly layered graphite based visible light photodetector

In this work, the drop casting method is utilized to obtain a thin graphene-like graphite layer as a photodetection layer on a SiO{sub 2}/Si substrate, and its performance is characterized to determine its potential use in commercial applications. The thin layer is formed by first synthesizing graphite soot from a butane flame before being turned into a liquid solution and drop-casted onto the substrate to form a thin graphene-like graphite film. Field emission scanning electron microscope and Raman vibrational mode analyses indicate that the fabricated graphene-like graphite layer has characteristics similar to the graphene. The graphene-like graphite photodetector demonstrates a narrow photoresponse from 530 to 680 nm, covering visible sources from green to red. The responsivity and external quantum efficiency of the device under the illumination of red laser 660 nm is found to be around 148 mA W{sup −1} and 27.8% respectively and is faster than that reported for similar systems using graphene and reduced graphene oxide previously. A fast response time of 83.7 and 28 µs at a modulation frequency of 1.0 and 10000 Hz respectively from the graphene-like thinly layered graphite photodetector shows potential application for the development of low-cost carbon-based photodetectors in near future.
