Discussion on LDPC Codes and Uplink Coding

This slide presentation reviews the progress that the workgroup on Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) for space link coding. The workgroup is tasked with developing and recommending new error correcting codes for near-Earth, Lunar, and deep space applications. Included in the presentation is a summary of the technical progress of the workgroup. Charts that show the LDPC decoder sensitivity to symbol scaling errors are reviewed, as well as a chart showing the performance of several frame synchronizer algorithms compared to that of some good codes and LDPC decoder tests at ESTL. Also reviewed is a study on Coding, Modulation, and Link Protocol (CMLP), and the recommended codes. A design for the Pseudo-Randomizer with LDPC Decoder and CRC is also reviewed. A chart that summarizes the three proposed coding systems is also presented.

Proposed experimental studies for assessing ionospheric perturbations on SPS uplinking pilot beam signal

Evidence is presented for the occurrence of natural irregularities at midlatitude based on scintillation measurements by the use of VHF and GHz transmission from geostationary satellites, and from satellite in-situ measurements. An effort to determine the phase and intensity scintillation effects during ionospheric heating is described along with proposed measurements related to the detection, lifetimes, and drift of artificial irregularities generated by ionospheric heating in the underdense mode.

Doppler System Phase Transfer Functions for a System with an X-band Uplink and X-band and S-band Downlinks

A new DSN RF system is being developed that transmits at X-band and receive at both X-band and S-band. End-to-end tests are planned to measure the phase stability of this system. Equations for the phase transfer functions between the error sources in the system and the X-band and S-band Doppler extractor outputs are derived. This analysis considers both test modes, using a test translator, and actual spacecraft tracking where the spacecraft is at some distance from the DSN station. The results indicate that the proposed end-to-end tests will not accurately reflect the error that occurs during actual spacecraft tracking.

X-band uplink feedcone capabilities, components, and layout

Two new X-(7.2 GHz up, 8.4 GHz down) and S-band (2.1 to 2.3 Ghz) common aperture (XSC) feedcones are being added to the DSS 45 and DSS 65 34-Meter Efficiency Antennas. These new feedcones are modifications of the existing SXC feedcone design incorporating a new high power (20-kW) X-band transmitter. The modified Antenna Microwave Subsystem design also incorporates two additional X-band low noise amplifiers and greater phase stability performance to meet both the increased stability requirements for Galileo gravity wave experiments and requirements for spacecraft navigation near the Sun. A third XSC will be constructed for DSS 15 later.

X-band uplink ground systems development: Part 2

The prototype X-band exciter testing has been completed. Stability and single-sideband phase noise measurements have been made on the X-band exciter signal (7.145-7.235 GHz) and on the coherent X- and S-band receiver test signals (8.4-8.5 GHz and 2.29-2.3 GHz) generated within the exciter equipment. Outputs are well within error budgets.

Simultaneous S- and X-band uplink-downlink performance at DSS 13

The Deep Space Station 13 26-meter antenna with the second generation S/X feedcone was tested to determine the dual S- and X-band (2.1 to 2.3 GHz and 7.1 to 8.5 GHz) transmit and receive performance. Measurements were conducted using the 20 kW transmitters at S- and X-band while simultaneously receiving S- and X-band. This system proved to be very quiet compared with the other DSN antennas. Under normal tracking configurations, no noise burst or intermodulation product (IMP) activity was detectable to the -175 dBm level. To prove the instrumentation's ability to detect such phenomena, an IMP generator was introduced onto the system with positive, verifiable results. The IMP occurred at the -162 dBm level, accompanied by moderate noise burst activity, and was readily repeatable. The measurement also showed the possible need for additional fourth channel filtering in the system to reduce the effect of the transmitter power on the low noise amplifiers.

AFTI/F-111 airplane mission adaptive wing operational flight evaluation technique using uplinked pilot command cues

NASA and the USAF have conducted a program to investigate aircraft performance improvements utilizing a mission adaptive wing (MAW). The MAW was designed and developed for the AFTI/F-111 variable-sweep aircraft to provide a hydraulically driven, smooth, and continuous variable camber of the trailing and leading edges as a function of maneuvering requirements or of flight conditions. The remotely augmented vehicle facility (RAV) at the NASA DFRF, as utilized in the MAW investigations, is described. The RAV was a dedicated, ground based, general purpose facility capable of receiving a data stream downlinked from a test vehicle, processing this data stream in a digital computer, and transmitting processed data back to the test vehicle. It is shown that this method of flight testing provides a technique that can evaluate highly dynamic maneuvers.

Rate 3/4 coded 16-QAM for uplink applications

First phase development of an advanced modulation technology which synergistically combines coding and modulation to achieve 2 bits per second per Hertz bandwidth efficiency in satellite demodulators is nearing completion. A proof-of-concept model is being developed to demonstrate technology feasibility, establish practical bandwidth efficiency limitations, and provide a data base for the design and development of engineering model satellite demodulators. The basic considerations leading to the choice of 4 x 4 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and its associated coding format are discussed, along with the basic implementation of the carrier and clock recovery, automatic gain control, and decoding process. Preliminary performance results are presented. Spectra for the modulated signal shows the effects of the square root Nyquist filters in the modulation. Bit error rate (BER) results for the encoder/decoder subsystem show near ideal results, although power consumption is high and baseband BER performance of the Nyquist filter set is poor. Recommendations regarding the present system to improve BER performance and acquisition speed are given.

An 8-PSK TDMA uplink modulation and coding system

The combination of 8-phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation and greater than 2 bits/sec/Hz drove the design of the Nyquist filter to one specified to have a rolloff factor of 0.2. This filter when built and tested was found to produce too much intersymbol interference and was abandoned for a design with a rolloff factor of 0.4. The preamble is limited to 100 bit periods of the uncoded bit period of 5 ns for a maximum preamble length of 500 ns or 40 8PSK symbol times at 12.5 ns per symbol. For 8PSK modulation, the required maximum degradation of 1 dB in -20 dB cochannel interference (CCI) drove the requirement for forward error correction coding. In this contract, the funding was not sufficient to develop the proposed codec so the codec was limited to a paper design during the preliminary design phase. The mechanization of the demodulator is digital, starting from the output of the analog to digital converters which quantize the outputs of the quadrature phase detectors. This approach is amenable to an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) replacement in the next phase of development.

Effects of fade distribution on a mobile satellite downlink and uplink performance in a frequency reuse cellular configuration

In a mobile satellite system with a frequency reuse cellular configuration, significant co-channel interference can be experienced due to the antenna sidelobe level. The signal will be subjected not only to its own fading, but also to the effect of the varying degree of fading on co-channel interferer, and this interference will behave differently in the up and in the down link. This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of the combined effects of fades and co-channel interference on a mobile satellite link.
