WOMBAT Tutorial

This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview to Windfarm Operations and Maintenance cost-Benefit Analysis Tool (WOMBAT), NREL's first wind O&M software model. The session will discuss how to utilize WOMBAT to answer O&M research questions covering land-based, offshore, and distributed wind farms. It will offer an introduction to the model and how it operates. The team will then offer a demonstration of the various modeling parameters by converting the CORE Wind Floating Wind Strategies O&M Assessment assumptions into an analysis-ready configuration, diving into the results, and exploring further model variations.

Tutorial: Lessons Learned for Behavior Analysts from Data Scientists

Big data is a computing term used to refer to large and complex data sets, typically consisting of terabytes or more of diverse data that is produced rapidly. The analysis of such complex data sets requires advanced analysis techniques with the capacity to identify patterns and abstract meanings from the vast data. The field of data science combines computer science with mathematics/statistics and leverages artificial intelligence, in particular machine learning, to analyze big data. This field holds great promise for behavior analysis, where both clinical and research studies produce large volumes of diverse data at a rapid pace (i.e., big data). This article presents basic lessons for the behavior analytic researchers and clinicians regarding integration of data science into the field of behavior analysis. We provide guidance on how to collect, protect, and process the data, while highlighting the importance of collaborating with data scientists to select a proper machine learning model that aligns with the project goals and develop models with input from human experts. Here, we hope this serves as a guide to support the behavior analysts interested in the field of data science to advance their practice or research, and helps them avoid some common pitfalls.

Deep inverse photonic design: A tutorial

Deep learning (DL) has been used to design deep neural networks (DNNs) which have recently been applied to solving inverse problems in artificial electromagnetic materials (AEMs). Although inverse problems are often ill-posed, and therefore are difficult to solve, deep inverse models (DIMs) have achieved impressive results often surpassing capabilities possible with other approaches. We overview the process of deep inverse learning applied to AEM problems, including the building of data sets, design of a forward model, and comparison of inverse approaches including limitations. We conclude by detailing some important outstanding issues of deep inverse design of AEMs, and present an outlook of this exciting field.

A tutorial on radio frequency sheath physics for magnetically confined fusion devices

Radio frequency (RF) sheaths occur under a wide variety of conditions when RF waves, material surfaces and plasma coexist. RF sheaths are of special importance in describing the interaction of ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) waves with the boundary plasma in tokamaks, stellarators and other magnetic confinement devices. In this article the basic physics of RF sheaths is discussed in the context of magnetic fusion research. Techniques for modelling RF sheaths, their interaction with RF wave fields and the resulting consequences are highlighted. The article is intended as a guide for the early-career ICRF researcher, but it may equally well serve to provide an overview of basic RF sheath concepts and modelling directions for any interested fusion scientist.

Epitaxial oxide thin films for oxygen electrocatalysis: A tutorial review

Epitaxial thin films can offer unprecedented definition of an electrocatalyst surface, defining the crystallographic orientation, interaction with a current collector, and providing an atomically flat surface for quantitative spectroscopy yielding mechanistic insight. This review introduces experts in thin films to the important parameters of electrochemical setups, techniques, and methods for quantifying electrocatalytic activity and comparing it across the literature. Examples are drawn from the literature measuring oxygen electrocatalysis on epitaxial oxide thin films. Furthermore, we share best practices in the robust measurement of intrinsic activity of thin films, including methods of electrical contact and assessment of charge transport in situ. We conclude by highlighting recent insights from epitaxial films in understanding oxygen electrocatalysis.

(Invited) Continuum Mathematical Modeling of Water Electrolysis: A Tutorial

Widespread use of hydrogen energy is contingent on the development of reliable and economical sources of hydrogen. Electrolysis from renewably-derived low-carbon electricity is a potentially viable method of hydrogen generation. Prime among the electrolysis technologies are those utilizing ion-conducting polymers (ionomers) including proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). However, these technologies need to exhibit increased efficiency, performance, and durability to become commercially viable. Like most electrochemical devices, PEMWEs involve multiple components (e.g., catalyst, ionomer, transport layers, membrane, plates) and multiple phases, with phenomena occurring across different time and length scales. Furthermore, it is difficult to experimentally probe many of the species and phenomena during operation. Thus, mathematical modeling at the continuum level has been an invaluable aid in exploring, understanding, and optimizing PEMWE cell and components. Furthermore, this is especially true in the highly coupled and complex physics and chemistries that occur with the membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). The physics in a typical volume-averaged non-isothermal model include multiphase transport in porous media, concentrated-solution theory, Ohm's Law, and Butler-Volmer kinetics, and ion, gas, and water transport in the ionomer.

Discrete Element Method Analysis for Metal Powders Used in Additive Manufacturing, and DEM Simulation Tutorial Using LIGGGHTS-PUBLIC [PowerPoint and paper]

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a method of analysis to evaluate the dynamic interactions between granular particles. This method has been used in the pharmaceutical industry to improve the powder compaction process for tablet manufacturing. There are also applications in agriculture, food industry, and manufacturing. Direct energy deposition is an additive manufacturing technique which uses metallic powders fed through a nozzle, melted using a directed laser, and transformed into a solid object layer by layer. One way of feeding metal particles into the system involves the use of a vibrating hopper. Given a specified amplitude and frequency input, the hopper will enable the powder to travel up a path, and inject through the system with assistance from a stream of gas. The mechanical properties of a printed object can vary, depending on the characteristics of the powder flow and the particles’ as-received properties. Improved understanding of dynamic interactions of flowing powders could enable additive manufacturing components with 2D or 3D variations in mechanical properties, e.g., density. This work uses DEM simulation software to investigate the effects of particle cohesion, friction, and density on the quality of the flow by performing an angle of repose simulation, which is often used as a metric to evaluate the flowability of powders.
