Operators manual for microdensitometer control program densitometer model PDS-1010G (modified). Program trace version 3B (section 3)

The PDS-1010G microdensitometer is run under the control of a PDP-11 program called TRACE. This program gives the operator vary flexible control over the machine functions. Most commands are passed to the computer through either the Tektronix 4010 terminal or the teletype, as selected by the position of the LOCAL/LINE rocker switch above the 4010 keyboard. (LINE places the 4010 in control; LOCAL transfers control to the teletype. In general, the teletype is used when the operator desires a permanent record of the operator-computer dialogue.) A small number of control functions are requested by setting switches on the computer front panel.

Solar array switching power management

Solar array power switching concepts are explored for a 250 kWe manned LEO platform, a 50-250 kWe load for an orbit transfer vehicle (OTV), and an unmanned platform with a 50 kWe load in GEO. A solar array switching power management (SASPM) system is under study to satisfy the switching demands. Direct connections to arrays would be implemented for voltage regulations, power distribution, and the capability of reconfiguring the arrays to meet requirements. Mission characteristics that would require the power sources were explored. The LEO platform was projected to use a concentrator, have no reconfigurability, use 250 NiH2 batteries, supply 80-0 Vdc to an ion drive, and have a 20-30 yr life. Both GEO and OTV arrays were planar, would feature reconfigurability, and supply 800 Vdc to an ion drive. NiH2 batteries would be on the OTV, while the GEO spacecraft would use AgH2 cells. A block diagram of the basic switching configuration is presented.

Development of cryogenic thermal control heat pipes

The development of thermal control heat pipes that are applicable to the low temperature to cryogenic range was investigated. A previous effort demonstrated that stainless steel axially grooved tubing which met performance requirements could be fabricated. Three heat pipe designs utilizing stainless steel axially grooved tubing were fabricated and tested. One is a liquid trap diode heat pipe which conforms to the configuration and performance requirements of the Heat Pipe Experiment Package (HEPP). The HEPP is scheduled for flight aboard the Long Duration Flight Exposure Facility (LDEF). Another is a thermal switch heat pipe which is designed to permit energy transfer at the cooler of the two identical legs. The third thermal component is a hybrid variable conductance heat pipe (VCHP). The design incorporates both a conventional VCHP system and a liquid trap diode. The design, fabrication and thermal testing of these heat pipes is described. The demonstrated heat pipe behavior including start-up, forward mode transport, recovery after evaporator dry-out, diode performance and variable conductance control are discussed.

High power solar array switching regulation

It is pointed out that spacecraft utilization projections for the 1980s and beyond show a trend toward extended lifetimes and larger electric power systems. The need for improved power management and energy transfer arising in connection with this trend has resulted in the conduction of a Solar Array Switching Power Management study. A description is presented of initial development work performed in the study, taking into account the characteristics for three mission classes. Attention is given to the manned LEO platform (250-kW average load), the unmanned GEO platform (50-kW average load), and an ion propulsion orbit transfer vehicle (50- to 250 kW load).

Nonvolatile Ionic Two-Terminal Memory Device

Conceptual solid-state memory device nonvolatile and erasable and has only two terminals. Proposed device based on two effects: thermal phase transition and reversible intercalation of ions. Transfer of sodium ions between source of ions and electrical switching element increases or decreases electrical conductance of element, turning switch "on" or "off". Used in digital computers and neural-network computers. In neural networks, many small, densely packed switches function as erasable, nonvolatile synaptic elements.

Optical materials for space based laser systems

The design features and performance characteristics of a sensitized holmium laser applicable to differential lidar and Doppler windshear measurements are presented, giving attention to the optimal choice of sensitizing/activating dopant ions. This development of a 2-micron region eye-safe laser, where holmium is sensitized by either hulium or erbium, has called for interionic energy transfer processes whose rate will not result in gain-switched pulses that are excessively long for atmospheric lidar and Doppler windshear detection. The application of diamond films for optical component hardening is noted.

Design and Testing of a Breadboard Electrical Power Control Unit for the Fluid Combustion Facility Experiment

The Fluid Combustion Facility (FCF) Project and the Power Technology Division at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) at Lewis Field in Cleveland, OH along with the Sundstrand Corporation in Rockford, IL are jointly developing an Electrical Power Converter Unit (EPCU) for the Fluid Combustion Facility to be flown on the International Space Station (ISS). The FCF facility experiment contains three racks: A core rack, a combustion rack, and a fluids rack. The EPCU will be used as the power interface to the ISS 120V(sub dc) power distribution system by each FCF experiment rack which requires 28V(sub dc). The EPCU is a modular design which contains three 120V(sub dc)-to-28V(sub dc) full-bridge, power converters rated at 1 kW(sub e) each bus transferring input relays and solid-state, current-limiting input switches, 48 current-limiting, solid-state, output switches; and control and telemetry hardware. The EPCU has all controls required to autonomously share load demand between the power feeds and--if absolutely necessary--shed loads. The EPCU, which maximizes the usage of allocated ISS power and minimizes loss of power to loads, can be paralleled with other EPCUs. This paper overviews the electrical design and operating characteristics of the EPCU and presents test data from the breadboard design.

Pulse switching for high energy lasers

A saturable inductor switch for compressing the width and sharpening the rise time of high voltage pulses from a relatively slow rise time, high voltage generator to an electric discharge gas laser (EDGL) also provides a capability for efficient energy transfer from a high impedance primary source to an intermediate low impedance laser discharge network. The switch is positioned with respect to a capacitive storage device, such as a coaxial cable, so that when a charge build-up in the storage device reaches a predetermined level, saturation of the switch inductor releases or switches energy stored in the capactive storage device to the EDGL. Cascaded saturable inductor switches for providing output pulses having rise times of less than ten nanoseconds and a technique for magnetically biasing the saturable inductor switch are disclosed.

Development of a breadboard design of a high-performance, high-reliability switching regulator

A comparison of two potential conversion methods, the series inverter and the inductive energy transfer (IET) conversion technique, is presented. The investigations showed that a characteristic of the series inverter circuit (high equalizing current values in each half cycle) could not be accomplished with available components, and the investigations continued with the IET circuit only. An IET circuit system was built with the use of computer-aided design in a 2, 4, and 8 stage configuration, and these stages were staggered 180, 90, and 45 degrees, respectively. All stages were pulsewidth modulated to regulate over an input voltage range from 200 to 400 volts dc at a regulated output voltage of 56 volts. The output power capability was 100 to 500 watts for the 2 and 8 stage configuration and 50 to 250 watts for the 4 stage configuration. Equal control of up to eight 45 degree staggered stages was accomplished through the use of a digital-to-analog control circuit. Equal power sharing of all stages was achieved through a new technique using an inductively coupled balancing circuit. Conclusions are listed.

Input filter design for switching regulators

A small signal average model is derived to study analytically the complex interaction among input filter, output filter and control loop, which frequently causes degradation of switch regulator performance. Analytically based design guidelines are formulated, and key design parameters are identified. It is shown that minimization of the forward transfer characteristics and the output impedance of the input filter at filter resonance are key to designing an input filter for a switching regulator with given output filter parameters and specified line and load conditions.

Traveling-wave synchronous coil gun

An outline is presented of the coilgun concept, excitation, switching, brush commutation, power supply, and performance. It is shown that a traveling-wave synchronous coilgun permits independent adjustment of the magnetic field and armature current for high velocity at low armature mass fraction. Magnetic field energy is transferred from the rear of the wave to the front without passing through the power supply. Elaborate switching is required.

The radiometer transfer function for the AAFE composite two-frequency radiometer scatterometer

A model was developed for the switching radiometer utilizing a continuous method of calibration. Sources of system degradation were identified and include losses and voltage standing wave ratios in front of the receiver input. After computing the three modes of operation, expressions were developed for the normalized radiometer output, the minimum detectable signal (normalized RMS temperature fluctuation), sensitivity, and accuracy correction factors).

Evaluation of Converter Performance Considering Static and Dynamic Device Part-to-Part Variability

This paper presents a methodology to incorporate and analyze the impact of semiconductor device part-to-part variation on power converter performance. By integrating extensive static and dynamic device characterization data with an automated compact model generation process that reflects manufacturing variability, device models with inherent variability features are utilized in converter simulations for a comprehensive assessment of performance impacts. The traditional converter performance evaluation process typically yields fixed efficiency values, often dismissing the inherent part-to-part variability caused by the manufacturing process of semiconductor devices. To address this limitation, a large population of devices was characterized to capture variations in static parameters-such as transfer, output, and capacitance characteristics-as well as dynamic behaviors, including switching losses. This data-driven approach enables the development of individual compact models, which were then integrated into converter simulations to evaluate efficiency ranges rather than single point estimated values. The converter simulation results show that part-to-part component variation can lead to significant efficiency deviations, exceeding several percentage points in high-power conversion applications. By offering a more accurate representation of converter behavior under real-world manufacturing conditions, this methodology enables designers to anticipate performance variability, improving the robustness of power converter designs.

Automatic communication signal monitoring system

A system is presented for automatic monitoring of a communication signal in the RF or IF spectrum utilizing a superheterodyne receiver technique with a VCO to select and sweep the frequency band of interest. A first memory is used to store one band sweep as a reference for continual comparison with subsequent band sweeps. Any deviation of a subsequent band sweep by more than a predetermined tolerance level produces an alarm signal which causes the band sweep data temporarily stored in one of two buffer memories to be transferred to long-term store while the other buffer memory is switched to its store mode to assume the task of temporarily storing subsequent band sweeps.
