TechEdSat-11: Prototyping Autonomous Communications in Orbit

Cognitive Engine 1 (CE-1) is a state-of-the-art automated system designed to manage routine operations and respond to adverse events without requiring human operator input. CE-1 will optimize scheduling capabilities, detect and react to link failures, and ensure data delivery deadlines are met efficiently. Seamless roaming between government and commercial providers will allow for a robust and cost-effective network. TechEdSat-11 will demonstrate two key components of CE-1: User Initiated Services (UIS) and Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN). The first phase of the experiment will use UIS to automate on-demand scheduling of a commercial S-band ground station. Later phases of the experiment will demonstrate DTN store-and-forward and space internetworking capabilities through the TechEdSat-11 S-band radio. This paper will discuss the CE-1 main components relevant to the experiment, the flight and ground software architecture, experiment concept of operations and preliminary results.

Automated End-to-End Spacecraft Connectivity Across Diverse Links

An increasing variety of communications services are available to space missions. Yet varying standards between providers hinder adoption due to the complexity of managing many configurations. We present a software framework to automatically establish end-to-end communications during contacts with a provider by configuring spacecraft protocols at the physical, link, and network layers. Underlying protocols and routes are abstracted, allowing the user to simply send data to a destination with the framework ensuring its delivery. We evaluate a full implementation of the framework in laboratory experiments conducted on an emulated communications testbed. These tests demonstrate data delivery across three different services with rapid (<20s) reconfiguration as the spacecraft transitions between providers.

Cognitive Engine One: A Cross-Layer Framework for Autonomy in Multi-Provider Space Communications Environments

Spacecraft information needs, along with the communications environments in which data transfers occur, are becoming increasingly dynamic. Earth orbit is served by dozens of ground station and relay satellite providers – each with unique protocols and service capabilities. In this context, we present a system to automate end-to-end space communications across the protocol stack for each of several providers. The proposed system schedules contacts with providers, configures point-to-point RF links, and ensures data is transferred to its destination. Data monitoring and rescheduling provide an automated failover capability in the event of unsuccessful contacts. We verify system performance in a high-fidelity emulation testbed. Results from several scenarios demonstrate favorable system performance across a variety of mission use cases.

Consequence Based Framework for Deployment of Cloud Solutions in the Digital Energy Transition

This study proposes a framework for evaluating cloud computing deployment in the electric sector, focusing on the digital transition of energy systems. It assesses the implications of cloud technology adoption, particularly in terms of security, operational resilience, and efficiency. The paper introduces a framework for consequence-driven applied risk analysis, enabling utilities to prioritize and mitigate potential threats effectively, and responsibly deploy cloud applications. It also discusses the shared responsibility model in cloud computing, highlighting the need for collaborative security efforts. The research aims to provide utilities with a strategic assessment tool for cloud adoption, emphasizing the importance of security culture in enhancing cloud computing's role in critical infrastructure.

Radiation monitoring devices and associated methods

Radiation monitoring devices and associated methods are described. According to one aspect, a radiation monitoring device includes a housing configured to pass radiation emitted from a radiological source located in proximity to the radiation monitoring device, a radiation detector configured to receive the radiation emitted from the radiological source and to generate information regarding the radiation, and communications circuitry configured to communicate the information regarding the radiation in a plurality of communications at a plurality of different moments in time externally of the radiation monitoring device.
