Thermal Control Using Liquid-Metal Bridge Switches

A short term effort (3-months) was undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of a novel method to locally control the heat transfer rate and demonstrate the potential to achieve a turndown ratio of approximately 10:1. The technology had to be demonstrated to be at a TRL of 2-3, with a plan to advance it to a TRL 5-6. Here, we show that the concept recently developed in our laboratory, namely the pinned-contact, double droplet switch made by overfilling a hole drilled in a suitable substrate can be implemented with a low-melting temperature metal. When toggled near a second substrate, a liquid bridge can be reversibly connected or disconnected, on demand. We have shown experimentally that liquid-metal bridge switches can be made from gallium with a suitable choice of substrate materials, activation strategies, and control techniques. Individual as well as arrays of gallium bridge switches were shown to be feasible and can be robustly controlled. The very short response time of the bridge connection and disconnection (on the order of 1 millisecond) provides for utility in a wide range of applications. The liquid bridge switches may be controlled actively or passively. We have shown through computations and analysis that liquid bridge switches provide locally large turndown ratios (on the order of 103:1), so a relatively sparse packing of them would be needed to obtain the desired turndown ratio of 10:1. For the laboratory demonstrations, pressure activation was utilized. Simple designs for a passive control strategy are presented which are highly attractive for several reasons, including i) large turndown ratio, ii) no solid-moving parts, and iii) stable operation. Finally, we note that passive systems do not require any electronics for their control. This along with the relatively small molecular weight of candidate materials for the system, makes for a robust design outside of Earth?s magnetic field, where spacecraft are subject to significant radiation bombardment.

A (He-3)-gap heat switch for use below 2 K in zero g

We have designed and tested a compact heat switch that has a simple design and a very large ON/OFF ratio. The design uses concentric cylinders of copper that can be fabricated with higher precision and with thinner web thickness than other designs. It is assembled with a technique that carefully controls the narrow gap between adjacent segments. These features allow a very large surface area for conduction to be fitted into a small volume. The conduction medium is liquid or gaseous He-3, which is put into or taken out of the switch by a small nearby charcoal pump in order to avoid an external mechanical pump and a long pump line. Measurements of its performance down to 1 K show an ON/OFF conduction ratio of about 4000.

High-speed electro-optic switch with -80 dB crosstalk

Special device modeling, design and layout, and precision processing controls were employed to fabricate new balanced-bridge 2x2 and 4x4 switches on X-cut, Y-propagation LiNbO3 substrate using Ti indiffused optical waveguides. The best of these devices achieved extinction ratio and crosstalk isolation of better than 93 dB electrically (46.5 dB optically). The new switches demonstrate good reproducibility with electrical crosstalk less than -80 dB.

On-board demux/demod

To make satellite channels cost competitive with optical cables, the use of small, inexpensive earth stations with reduced antenna size and high powered amplifier (HPA) power will be needed. This will necessitate the use of high e.i.r.p. and gain-to-noise temperature ratio (G/T) multibeam satellites. For a multibeam satellite, onboard switching is required in order to maintain the needed connectivity between beams. This switching function can be realized by either an receive frequency (RF) or a baseband unit. The baseband switching approach has the additional advantage of decoupling the up-link and down-link, thus enabling rate and format conversion as well as improving the link performance. A baseband switching satellite requires the demultiplexing and demodulation of the up-link carriers before they can be switched to their assigned down-link beams. Principles of operation, design and implementation issues of such an onboard demultiplexer/demodulator (bulk demodulator) that was recently built at COMSAT Labs. are discussed.

The solar brightness temperature at millimeter wavelengths

Measurements of the brightness temperature of the sun near 36 GHz and 93 GHz were made using the new moon as a calibration source. Provided the brightness temperature of the moon is known and all measurements are reduced to the same zenith angle, a simple expression can be used for the sun-to-new moon ratio which is independent of antenna gain, atmospheric absorption and reemission, and radiometer calibration constants. This ratio was measured near 36 GHz and at two frequencies near 93 GHz with a Dicke switched superheterodyne radiometer system and a 2.4 m Cassegrain antenna. The slopes of the solar brightness temperature spectrum based on these ratios were measured. The absolute solar brightness spectrum derived from all current available measurements supplemented by the present ones is also plotted and discussed.

Enhancing the metal–insulator transition in VO 2 heterostructures with graphene interlayers

In this work, studies were conducted on epitaxial VO 2 thin films to assess to the effect of remote epitaxy on the metal–insulator transition (MIT). The epitaxial VO 2 heterostructures were synthesized on both bare Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrates and Al 2 O 3 substrates coated with two monolayer-thick graphene. While both systems exhibit the MIT, the film grown by remote epitaxy on graphene demonstrates improved transport properties. Electrical transport measurements show that the on/off ratio is enhanced by a factor of ~7.5 and the switching temperature window is narrower for VO 2 thin films grown on graphene. By characterizing the heterostructures with a suite of structural, chemical, and spectroscopic tools, we find that the graphene interlayer inhibits oxygen vacancy diffusion from Al 2 O 3 (0001) during the VO 2 growth, resulting in improved electrical behavior at the MIT.

A general unified approach to modelling switching-converter power stages

A method for modeling switching-converter power stages is developed, whose starting point is the unified state-space representation of the switched networks and whose end result is either a complete state-space description or its equivalent small-signal low-frequency linear circuit model. A new canonical circuit model is proposed, whose fixed topology contains all the essential input-output and control properties of any dc-to-dc switching converter, regardless of its detailed configuration, and by which different converters can be characterized in the form of a table conveniently stored in a computer data bank to provide a useful tool for computer aided design and optimization. The new canonical circuit model predicts that, in general, switching action introduces both zeros and poles into the duty ratio to output transfer function in addition to those from the effective filter network.

Common Mode Current Challenges and Opportunities in Electric Powertrain Testing

During the development of novel electric powertrain (EP) components key parameters may be evaluated by test before a fully integrated EMI design is implemented. However, insufficiently mitigated EMI could impact the test equipment and test measurements. This risk is particularly valid with high voltage wide bandgap switching converters which enable high efficiency but can increase the EMI source function producing high levels of common mode (CM) current. Test facility equipment may be susceptible to the CM current from these converters causing test delays or measurement errors. Characterization of the common mode EMI of a powertrain component by analysis and/or measurement and assessment of the test facility EMC design can reduce this risk to yield efficient tests and successful measurements.

FUN with PANURGE - High mass resolution ion microprobe measurements of Mg in Allende inclusions

Isotopic ratios have been determined, at a precision level approaching that of counting statistics using beam switching, by employing PANURGE, a modified CAMECA IMS3F ion microprobe at a mass resolving power of 5000. This technique is used to determine the isotopic composition of Mg and Si and the atomic ratio of Al/Mg in minerals from the Allende inclusion WA and the Allende FUN inclusion C1. Results show enrichment in Mg-26 of up to 260 percent. Results of Mg and Al/Mg measurements on cogenetic spinel inclusion and host plagiclase crystals show Mg-Al isochrons in excellent agreement with precise mineral isochrons determined by thermal emission mass spectrometry. The measurements are found to confirm the presence of substantial excess Mg-26 in WA and its near absence in C1. Data is obtained which indicates a metamorphic reequilibrium of Mg in Allende plagioclase at least 0.6 my after WA formation. Ion probe measurements are obtained which confirm that the Mg composition in Allende C1 is highly fractionated and is uniform among pyroxene, melilite, plagioclase, spinel crystals, and spinel included in melilite and plagioclase crystals.

High-power microstrip RF switch

A microstrip-type single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch whose RF and bias portions contain only a metallized alumina substrate and two PIN diodes has been developed. A technique developed to eliminate the dc blocking capacitors needed for biasing the diodes is described. These capacitors are extra components and could lower the reliability significantly. An SPDT switch fabricated on a 5.08 x 5.08 x 0.127-cm (2 x 2 x 0.050-in.) substrate has demonstrated an RF power-handling capability greater than 50 W at S-band. The insertion loss is less than 0.25 db and the input-to-off port isolation is greater than 36 db over a bandwidth larger than 30 MHz. The input voltage standing-wave ratio is lower than 1.07 over the same bandwidth. Theoretical development of the switch characteristics and experimental results, which are in good agreement with theory, are presented.

Ag(111) Remains Significantly Reduced In Situ under Simulated Ethylene Epoxidation Conditions

Direct ethylene epoxidation is among the highest value processes in the chemical industry, yet the reaction mechanism remains debated. A central question is whether the unpromoted Ag catalyst is metallic or oxidized under reaction conditions, as this determines the active oxidant species. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at chemical potentials simulating industrial conditions, we find that under oxidizing environments, nucleophilic oxygen (∼80% surface coverage) and some carbonate impurities (∼20% coverage) form on Ag(111). Upon switching to an industrially relevant 5:2 ethylene-to-oxygen ratio at 433 K, nucleophilic oxygen is consumed, leaving mostly surface carbonate and bare Ag. The Ag(111) surface maintains ∼50% exposed metallic sites under these conditions. This indicates that proposed mechanisms involving a fully oxidized surface may not represent the state of the surface under relevant reaction conditions and that bare Ag sites, which are necessary to form the oxametallacycle intermediate thought to drive selective epoxidation, are available.

Towards Low-Temperature CVD Synthesis and Characterization of Mono- or Few-Layer Molybdenum Disulfide

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) transistors are a promising alternative for the semiconductor industry due to their large on/off current ratio (>10 10 ), immunity to short-channel effects, and unique switching characteristics. MoS 2 has drawn considerable interest due to its intriguing electrical, optical, sensing, and catalytic properties. Monolayer MoS 2 is a semiconducting material with a direct band gap of ~1.9 eV, which can be tuned. Commercially, the aim of synthesizing a novel material is to grow high-quality samples over a large area and at a low cost. Although chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth techniques are associated with a low-cost pathway and large-area material growth, a drawback concerns meeting the high crystalline quality required for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. This research presents a lower-temperature CVD for the repeatable synthesis of large-size mono- or few-layer MoS 2 using the direct vapor phase sulfurization of MoO 3 . The samples grown on Si/SiO 2 substrates demonstrate a uniform single-crystalline quality in Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning transmission electron microscopy. These characterization techniques were targeted to confirm the uniform thickness, stoichiometry, and lattice spacing of the MoS 2 layers. The MoS 2 crystals were deposited over the entire surface of the sample substrate. With a detailed discussion of the CVD setup and an explanation of the process parameters that influence nucleation and growth, this work opens a new platform for the repeatable synthesis of highly crystalline mono- or few-layer MoS 2 suitable for optoelectronic application.

Photographic combustion characterization of LOX/hydrocarbon type propellants

Single element injectors and two fuels were tested with the aim of photographically characterizing observed combustion phenomena. The three injectors tested were the O-F-O triplet, the transverse like on like (TLOL), and the rectangular unlike doublet (RUD). The fuels tested were RP-1 and propane. The hot firings were conducted in a specifically constructed chamber fitted with quartz windows for photographically viewing the impingement spray field. All LOX/HC testing demonstrated coking with the RP-1 fuel leaving far more soot than the propane fuel. No fuel freezing or popping was experienced under the test conditions evaluated. Carbon particle emission and combustion light brilliance increased with Pc for both fuels although RP-1 was far more energetic in this respect. The RSS phenomena appear to be present in the high Pc tests as evidenced by striations in the spray pattern and by separate fuel rich and oxidizer rich areas. The RUD element was also tested as a fuel rich gas generator element by switching the propellant circuits. Excessive sooting occurred at this low mixture ratio (0.55), precluding photographic data.

Photon-Counting Microlaser Rangers, Transponders, and Altimeters

Unlike current manned systems, NASA's next generation SLR2000 Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) station is fully autonomous. eye-safe, relatively compact and inexpensive. and, during daytime tracking operates at signal-to-noise ratios several orders of magnitude below unity. Tiny, passively Q-switched microlasers generate ultra-short pulses with output energies on the order of 100 micron-J at few kHz rates to achieve mm-level ranging precision to satellite altitudes of 20,000 km. Special ranging receivers, combined with Poisson statistical analysis of the received photon distribution, enable the system to rapidly and reliably identify and extract the single photon laser echoes from the solar background. The enhanced rate of return, combined with a uniform signal strength, can actually drive down both systematic and random range errors. The new SLR2000 technology has already spawned exciting new applications. Compact microlaser altimeters, capable of mapping the surface of a planet or other celestial body at multikilohertz rates, is one such application, and a high altitude, airborne version is currently being developed under NASA's Instrument Incubator Program. Interplanetary microlaser transponders would be capable of performing decimeter ranging or subnanosecond time transfer to spacecraft throughout the inner Solar System. resulting in improved knowledge of planetary motions and liberations and enhanced General Relativity experiments.

Multi-resonant switched capacitor power converter architecture

A switched-capacitor (SC) network in an SC converter is controlled to operate at varying resonant modes to achieve high conversion ratio efficiency, at a low circuit component count. These power converters are suited to numerous application areas including improving energy efficiency of data centers. A family of resonant switched capacitor (SC) converters with multiple operating phases are presented “Multi-Resonant SC Converters”. Described in detail are an 8-to-1 Multi-Resonant-Doubler (MRD) converter and a 6-to-1 Cascaded Series-Parallel (CaSP). The topology of these converters make them amenable to combining like units in parallel toward reaching higher power levels.
