Broken conformal window

We show that near the edges of the conformal window of supersymmetric SU(Nc) QCD, perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB), chiral symmetry can be broken depending on the initial conditions of the RG flow. We do so by perturbatively expanding around Banks-Zaks fixed points and taking advantage of Seiberg duality. Interpolating between the edges of the conformal window, we predict that non-supersymmetric QCD breaks chiral symmetry up to N f ≤ 3N c − 1, while we cannot say anything definitive for N f ≥ 3N c at this moment.

Revisiting the multi-monopole point of SU( N ) $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions

Motivated by applications to soft supersymmetry breaking, we revisit the expansion of the Seiberg-Witten solution around the multi-monopole point on the Coulomb branch of pure SU(N) $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions. At this point N - 1 mutually local magnetic monopoles become massless simultaneously, and in a suitable duality frame the gauge couplings logarithmically run to zero. We explicitly calculate the leading threshold corrections to this logarithmic running from the Seiberg-Witten solution by adapting a method previously introduced by D’Hoker and Phong. We compare our computation to existing results in the literature; this includes results specific to SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories, the large-N results of Douglas and Shenker, as well as results obtained by appealing to integrable systems or topological strings. We find broad agreement, while also clarifying some lingering inconsistencies. Finally, we explicitly extend the results of Douglas and Shenker to finite N, finding exact agreement with our first calculation.

Phase transitions at unusual values of θ

We calculate the θ dependence in a cousin of QCD, where the vacuum structure can be analyzed exactly. The theory is $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 SU(2) gauge theory with N F = 0, 1, 2, 3 flavors of fundamentals, explicitly broken to $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 via an adjoint superpotential, and coupled to anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). The hierarchy m AMSB ≪ μ 𝒩=1 ≪ Λ ensures the validity of our IR analysis. As expected from ordinary QCD, the vacuum energy is a function of θ which undergoes 1st order phase transitions between different vacua where the various dyons condense. For N F = 0 we find the expected phase transition at θ = π, while for N F = 1, 2, 3 we find phase transitions at fractional values of π.

Spinor-helicity formalism for massive and massless amplitudes in five dimensions

Five-dimensional gauge and gravity theories are known to exhibit striking properties. D = 5 is the lowest dimension where massive tensor states appear naturally, providing a testing ground for perturbative insights into six-dimensional tensor theories. Five-dimensional supergravities are highly constrained and admit elegant geometric and algebraic formulations, with global symmetries manifest at the Lagrangian level. In this paper, we take a step towards the systematic investigation of amplitudes in five dimensions, and present a five-dimensional version of the spinor-helicity formalism, applicable to massless, massive and supersymmetric states. We give explicit representations for on-shell spinor and polarization variables such that the little-group symmetry and gauge redundancy are manifest. Massive self-dual tensor states are discussed in some detail, as well as all the on-shell supermultiplets that can appear in matter-coupled gauge and supergravity theories. As a byproduct of considering supersymmetry in the presence of central charge, we obtain massless ten-dimensional Majorana-Weyl spinors as products of five-dimensional massive spinors. We present compact expressions for superamplitudes at multiplicity three and four, including several novel superamplitudes that either do not straightforwardly uplift to six dimensions, or have not appeared in the six-dimensional literature. We discuss several examples of five-dimensional double-copy constructions in the context of gravitational theories with massive vectors and tensors, illustrating that the formalism we construct can also be used to considerably streamline the double-copy construction of $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravities.

Search for direct pair production of sleptons and charginos decaying to two leptons and neutralinos with mass splittings near the $W$-boson mass in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for the electroweak production of pairs of charged sleptons or charginos decaying into two-lepton final states with missing transverse momentum is presented. Two simplified models of R-parity-conserving supersymmetry are considered: direct pair-production of sleptons ($\sim\atop{\ell}$$\sim\atop{\ell}$), with each decaying into a charged lepton and a $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$ neutralino, and direct pair-production of the lightest charginos ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$ $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{∓}_{1}$), with each decaying into a W-boson and a $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$. The lightest neutralino ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The analyses target the experimentally challenging mass regions where $m$($\sim\atop{\ell}$) - $m$($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) and ($m$$\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$) – )$m$$\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) are close to the W-boson mass (‘moderately compressed’ regions). The search uses 139 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excesses over the expected background are observed. Exclusion limits on the simplified models under study are reported in the ($\sim\atop{\ell}$, $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) and ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$, $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) mass planes at 95% confidence level (CL). Sleptons with masses up to 150 GeV are excluded at 95% CL for the case of a mass-splitting between sleptons and the LSP of 50 GeV. Chargino masses up to 140 GeV are excluded at 95% CL for the case of a mass-splitting between the chargino and the LSP down to about 100 GeV.

Search for heavy, long-lived, charged particles with large ionisation energy loss in $pp$ collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV using the ATLAS experiment and the full Run 2 dataset

This paper presents a search for hypothetical massive, charged, long-lived particles with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collisions at √s =13 TeV. These particles are expected to move significantly slower than the speed of light and should be identifiable by their high transverse momenta and anomalously large specific ionisation losses, dE/dx. Trajectories reconstructed solely by the inner tracking system and a dE/dx measurement in the pixel detector layers provide sensitivity to particles with lifetimes down to O(1) ns with a mass, measured using the Bethe–Bloch relation, ranging from 100 GeV to 3 TeV. Interpretations for pair-production of R-hadrons, charginos and staus in scenarios of supersymmetry compatible with these particles being long-lived are presented, with mass limits extending considerably beyond those from previous searches in broad ranges of lifetime.

Global symmetry and integral constraint on superconformal lines in four dimensions

We study properties of point-like impurities preserving flavor symmetry and supersymmetry in four-dimensional 𝒩 = 2 field theories. At large distances, such impurities are described by half-BPS superconformal line defects. By working in the AdS 2 × S 2 conformal frame, we develop a novel and simpler way of deriving the superconformal Ward identities relating the various two-point functions of flavor current multiplet operators in the presence of the defect. We use these relations to simplify a certain integrated two-point function of flavor current multiplet operators that, in Lagrangian theories, can be computed using supersymmetric localization. The simplification gives an integral constraint on the two-point function of the flavor current multiplet superconformal primary with trivial integration measure in the AdS 2 × S 2 conformal frame. We provide several consistency checks on our Ward identities.

The ABC of RPV: classification of R-parity violating signatures at the LHC for small couplings

We perform a classification of all potential supersymmetric R-parity violating signatures at the LHC to address the question: are existing bounds on supersymmetric models robust, or are there still signatures not covered by existing searches, allowing LHC scale supersymmetry to be hiding? We analyze all possible scenarios with one dominant RPV trilinear coupling at a time, allowing for arbitrary LSPs and mass spectra. We consider direct production of the LSP, as well as production via gauge-cascades, and find 6 different experimental signatures for the $LL\overline{E}$-case, 6 for the $LQ\overline{D}$-case, and 5 for the $\overline{U}$ $\overline{D}$ $\overline{D}$-case; together these provide complete coverage of the RPV-MSSM landscape. This set of signatures is confronted with the existing searches by ATLAS and CMS. We find all signatures have been covered at the LHC, although not at the sensitivity level needed to probe the direct production of all LSP types. For the case of a dominant $LL\overline{E}$-operator, we use CheckMATE to quantify the current lower bounds on the supersymmetric masses and find the limits to be comparable to or better than the R-parity conserving case. Our treatment can be easily extended to scenarios with more than one non-zero RPV coupling.

Nonrenormalization theorem for $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) interface entropy

We derive a formula for the half-BPS interface entropy between any pair of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories on the same conformal manifold. This generalizes the diastasis formula derived in [1] for $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) theories, which is restricted to the conformal submanifolds generated by either chiral or twisted chiral multiples of $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) supersymmetry. To derive the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) formula, we use the fact that the conformal manifold of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories is symmetric and quaternionic-Kähler and that its isotropy group contains the SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) external automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) superconformal algebra. As an application of the formula, we prove a supersymmetric non-renormalization theorem, which explains the observation in [2] that the interface entropy for half-BPS Janus solutions in type IIB supergravity on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 coincides with the corresponding quantity in their free conformal field limits.

Moduli stabilisation and the statistics of axion physics in the landscape

String theory realisations of the QCD axion are often said to belong to the anthropic window where the decay constant is around the GUT scale and the initial misalignment angle has to be tuned close to zero. In this paper we revisit this statement by studying the statistics of axion physics in the string landscape. We take moduli stabilisation properly into account since the stabilisation of the saxions is crucial to determine the physical properties of the corresponding axionic partners. We focus on the model-independent case of closed string axions in type IIB flux compactifications and find that their decay constants and mass spectrum feature a logarithmic, instead of a power-law, distribution. In the regime where the effective field theory is under control, most of these closed string axions are ultra-light axion-like particles, while axions associated to blow-up modes can naturally play the role of the QCD axion. Hence, the number of type IIB flux vacua with a closed string QCD axion with an intermediate scale decay constant and a natural value of the misalignment angle is only logarithmically suppressed. In a recent paper we found that this correlates also with a logarithmic distribution of the supersymmetry breaking scale, providing the intriguing indication that most, if not all, of the phenomenologically interesting quantities in the string landscape might feature a logarithmic distribution.

\( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 supersymmetric partially massless fields and other exotic non-unitary superconformal representations

We find and classify the simplest \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 SUSY multiplets on AdS 4 which contain partially massless fields. We do this by studying representations of the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2, d = 3 superconformal algebra of the boundary, including new shortening conditions that arise in the non-unitary regime. Unlike the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1 case, the simplest \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 multiplet containing a partially massless spin-2 is short, containing several exotic fields. More generally, we argue that \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 supersymmetry allows for short multiplets that contain partially massless spin- s particles of depth t = s – 2.

Detecting new physics as novelty — Complementarity matters

Novelty detection is a task of machine learning that aims at detecting novel events without a prior knowledge. In particular, its techniques can be applied to detect unexpected signals from new phenomena at colliders. In this paper, we develop an analysis scheme that exploits the complementarity, originally studied in ref. [1], between isolation-based and clustering-based novelty evaluators. This approach can significantly improve the performance and overall applicability of novelty detection at colliders, which we demonstrate using a variety of two dimensional Gaussian samples mimicking collider events. As a further proof of principle, we subsequently apply this scheme to the detection of two significantly different signals at the LHC featuring a $t\bar{t}γγ$ final state: $t\bar{t}h$, giving a narrow resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum, and gravity-mediated supersymmetry, resulting in broad distributions at high transverse momentum. Compared to existing dedicated searches at the LHC, the sensitivities for detecting both signals are found to be encouraging.

Search for top squarks in final states with many light-flavor jets and 0, 1, or 2 charged leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Several new physics models including versions of supersymmetry (SUSY) characterized by R-parity violation (RPV) or with additional hidden sectors predict the production of events with top quarks, low missing transverse momentum, and many additional quarks or gluons. The results of a search for top squarks decaying to two top quarks and six additional light-flavor quarks or gluons are reported. The search employs a novel machine learning method for background estimation from control samples in data using decorrelated discriminators. The search is performed using events with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons in conjunction with at least six jets. No requirement is placed on the magnitude of the missing transverse momentum. The result is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV corresponding to 138 fb −1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. With no statistically significant excess of events observed beyond the expected contributions from the standard model, the data are used to determine upper limits on the top squark pair production cross section in the frameworks of RPV and stealth SUSY. Models with top squark masses less than 700 (930) GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for RPV (stealth) SUSY scenarios.

Resolving the ($\mathscr{g}$-2)$_μ$ discrepancy with $\mathcal{F}$–SU(5) intersecting D-branes

A discrepancy between the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g - 2) μ and computed Standard Model value now stands at a combined 4.2σ following experiments at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). A solution to the disagreement is uncovered in flipped SU(5) with additional TeV-Scale vector-like 10 +$\bar{10}$ multiplets and charged singlet derived from local F-Theory, collectively referred to as $\mathcal {F}$-SU(5). Here we engage general No-Scale supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in $\mathcal {F}$-SU(5) D-brane model building to alleviate the (g-2)μ. tension between the Standard Model and observations. A robust Δa μ (SUSY) is realized via mixing of M 5 and M 1X at the secondary SU(5) x U(1) X unification scale in $\mathcal {F}$-SU(5) emanating from SU(5) breaking and U(1) X flux effects. Calculations unveil Δa μ (SUSY) = 19.0-22.3 x 10 -10 for gluino masses of M($\tilde{g}$ = 2.25-2.56 TeV nd higgsino dark matter, aptly residing within the BNL+FNAL 1σ mean. This (g – 2)μ favorable region of the model space also generates the correct light Higgs boson mass and branching ratios of companion rare decay processes, and is further consistent with all LHC Run 2 constraints. Finally, we also examine the heavy SUSY Higgs boson in light of recent LHC searches for an extended Higgs sector.

Visualization and efficient generation of constrained high-dimensional theoretical parameter spaces

We describe a set of novel methods for efficiently sampling high-dimensional parameter spaces of physical theories defined at high energies, but constrained by experimental measurements made at lower energies. Often, theoretical models such as supersymmetry are defined by many parameters, $\mathcal{O}$(10 – 100), expressed at high energies, while relevant experimental constraints are often defined at much lower energies, preventing them from directly ruling out portions of the space. Instead, the low-energy constraints define a complex, potentially non-contiguous subspace of the theory parameters. Naive scanning of the theory space for points which satisfy the low-energy constraints is hopelessly inefficient due to the high dimensionality, and the inverse problem is considered intractable. As a result, many theoretical spaces remain under-explored. We introduce a class of modified generative autoencoders, which attack this problem by mapping the high-dimensional parameter space to a structured low-dimensional latent space, allowing for easy visualization and efficient generation of theory points which satisfy experimental constraints. An extension without dimensional compression, which focuses on limiting potential information loss, is also introduced.

Search for direct production of winos and higgsinos in events with two same-charge leptons or three leptons in $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for supersymmetry targeting the direct production of winos and higgsinos is conducted in final states with either two leptons (e or μ) with the same electric charge, or three leptons. The analysis uses 139 fb -1 of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Simplified and complete models with and without R-parity conservation are considered. In topologies with intermediate states including either Wh or WZ pairs, wino masses up to 525 GeV and 250 GeV are excluded, respectively, for a bino of vanishing mass. Higgsino masses smaller than 440 GeV are excluded in a natural R-parity-violating model with bilinear terms. Upper limits on the production cross section of generic events beyond the Standard Model as low as 40 ab are obtained in signal regions optimised for these models and also for an R-parity-violating scenario with baryon-number-violating higgsino decays into top quarks and jets. The analysis significantly improves sensitivity to supersymmetric models and other processes beyond the Standard Model that may contribute to the considered final states.

Crescendo beyond the horizon: More gravitational waves from domain walls bounded by inflated cosmic strings

Gravitational-wave (GW) signals offer a unique window into the dynamics of the early universe. GWs may be generated by the topological defects produced in the early universe, which contain information on the symmetry of UV physics. We consider the case in which a two-step phase transition produces a network of domain walls bounded by cosmic strings. Specifically, we focus on the case in which there is a hierarchy in the symmetry-breaking scales, and a period of inflation pushes the cosmic string generated in the first phase transition outside the horizon before the second phase transition. We show that the GW signal from the evolution and collapse of this string-wall network has a unique spectrum, and the resulting signal strength can be sizeable. In particular, depending on the model parameters, the resulting signal can show up in a broad range of frequencies and can be discovered by a multitude of future probes, including the pulsar timing arrays and space- and ground-based GW observatories. As an example that naturally gives rise to this scenario, we present a model with the first phase transition followed by a brief period of thermal inflation driven by the field responsible for the second stage of symmetry breaking. Here, the model can be embedded into a supersymmetric setup, which provides a natural realization of this scenario. In this case, the successful detection of the peak of the GW spectrum probes the soft supersymmetry breaking scale and the wall tension.

Search for charginos and neutralinos in final states with two boosted hadronically decaying bosons and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for charginos and neutralinos at the Large Hadron Collider using fully hadronic final states and missing transverse momentum is reported. Pair-produced charginos or neutralinos are explored, each decaying into a high-p T Standard Model weak boson. Fully hadronic final states are studied to exploit the advantage of the large branching ratio, and the efficient rejection of backgrounds by identifying the high-p T bosons using large-radius jets and jet substructure information. An integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is used. No significant excess is found beyond the Standard Model expectation. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are set on wino or higgsino production with various assumptions about the decay branching ratios and the type of lightest supersymmetric particle. A wino (higgsino) mass up to 1060 (900) GeV is excluded when the lightest supersymmetry particle mass is below 400 (240) GeV and the mass splitting is larger than 400 (450) GeV. The sensitivity to high-mass winos and higgsinos is significantly extended relative to previous LHC searches using other final states.
