Universality in logarithmic temperature corrections to near-extremal rotating black hole thermodynamics in various dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS 4 , Kerr-Newman-AdS 4 and the rotating black hole in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS5 black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2}$logT Hawking to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

Nonrenormalization theorem for $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) interface entropy

We derive a formula for the half-BPS interface entropy between any pair of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories on the same conformal manifold. This generalizes the diastasis formula derived in [1] for $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) theories, which is restricted to the conformal submanifolds generated by either chiral or twisted chiral multiples of $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) supersymmetry. To derive the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) formula, we use the fact that the conformal manifold of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories is symmetric and quaternionic-Kähler and that its isotropy group contains the SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) external automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) superconformal algebra. As an application of the formula, we prove a supersymmetric non-renormalization theorem, which explains the observation in [2] that the interface entropy for half-BPS Janus solutions in type IIB supergravity on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 coincides with the corresponding quantity in their free conformal field limits.

$T\overline{T}$ deformations of supersymmetric quantum mechanics

We define a manifestly supersymmetric version of the $T\overline{T}$ deformation appropriate for a class of (0 + 1)-dimensional theories with $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 or $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetry, including one presentation of the super-Schwarzian theory which is dual to JT supergravity. These deformations are written in terms of Noether currents associated with translations in superspace, so we refer to them collectively as f($\mathcal{Q}$) deformations. We provide evidence that the f($\mathcal{Q}$) deformations of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 and $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 theories are on-shell equivalent to the dimensionally reduced supercurrent-squared deformations of 2d theories with $\mathcal{N}$ = (0, 1) and $\mathcal{N}$ = (1, 1)supersymmetry, respectively. In the $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 case, we present two forms of the f($\mathcal{Q}$) deformation which drive the same flow, and clarify their equivalence by studying the analogous equivalent deformations in the non-supersymmetric setting.

From large to small $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = (4, 4) superconformal surface defects in holographic 6d SCFTs

Abstract Two-dimensional (2d)$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) Lie superalgebras can be either “small” or “large”, meaning their R-symmetry is either$$ \mathfrak{so} $$ so (4) or$$ \mathfrak{so} $$ so (4) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{so} $$ so (4), respectively. Both cases admit a superconformal extension and fit into the one-parameter family$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ), with parameterγ∈ (−∞,∞). The large algebra corresponds to generic values ofγ, while the small case corresponds to a degeneration limit withγ→ −∞. In 11d supergravity, we study known solutions with superisometry algebra$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) that are asymptotically locally AdS 7 ×𝕊 4 . These solutions are holographically dual to the 6d maximally superconformal field theory with 2d superconformal defects invariant under$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ). We show that a limit of these solutions, in whichγ→ −∞, reproduces another known class of solutions, holographically dual tosmall$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) superconformal defects. We then use this limit to generate new small$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) solutions with finite Ricci scalar, in contrast to the known small$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) solutions. We then use holography to compute the entanglement entropy of a spherical region centered on these small$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) defects, which provides a linear combination of defect Weyl anomaly coefficients that characterizes the number of defect-localized degrees of freedom. We also comment on the generalization of our results to include$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0,4) surface defects through orbifolding.

Neutralizing topological obstructions to bubbles of nothing

Theories with compact extra dimensions can exhibit a vacuum instability known as a bubble of nothing. These decay modes can be obstructed if the internal manifold is stabilized by fluxes, or if it carries Wilson lines for background gauge fields, or if the instanton is incompatible with the spin structure. In each of these cases the decay can proceed by adding dynamical charged membranes or gauge fields. We give a general, bottom-up procedure for constructing approximate bubble of nothing solutions in models with internal spheres stabilized by flux and study the influence of the brane tension on the tunneling exponent, finding two branches of solutions that merge at a minimal superextremal value of the tension. In the case of Wilson operators and incompatible fermions, the relevant bubble is shown to be the Euclidean Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, and the ordinary decay exponent is modified by 1/g 2 effects. We examine the Dirac operator on this background and comment on the relevance for models of supergravity with gauged R-symmetry.

Asymptotic Weyl double copy

A characteristic value formulation of the Weyl double copy leads to an asymptotic formulation. We find that the Weyl double copy holds asymptotically in cases where the full solution is algebraically general, using rotating STU supergravity black holes as an example. The asymptotic formulation provides clues regarding the relation between asymptotic symmetries that follows from the double copy. Using the C-metric as an example, we show that a previous interpretation of this gravity solution as a superrotation has a single copy analogue relating the appropriate Liénard-Wiechert potential to a large gauge transformation.

The stranger things of symmetric product orbifold CFTs

Symmetric product orbifold theories are valuable due to their universal features at large N. Here we will demonstrate that they have features that are not as pervasive: we provide evidence of strange behaviour under deformations within their moduli space. To this end, we consider the symmetric product orbifold of tensor products of N = 2 super-Virasoro minimal models, and classify them according to two criteria. The first criterion is the existence of a single-trace twisted exactly marginal operator that triggers the deformation. The second criterion is a sparseness condition on the growth of light states in the elliptic genera. In this context we encounter a strange variety: theories that obey the first criterion but the second criterion falls into a Hagedorn-like growth. We explain why this may be counter-intuitive and discuss how it might be accounted for in conformal perturbation theory. We also find a new infinite class of theories that obey both criteria, which are necessary conditions for each moduli space to contain a supergravity point.

Soft theorems in matrix theory

We show that the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind matrix model for M-theory obeys the leading and subleading soft theorems expected from eleven-dimensional supergravity. The subleading soft theorem implies the amplitude is Lorentz symmetric. This is argued for general four point amplitudes, but only for restricted kinematics for five and higher point amplitudes.

One-loop matrix elements of effective superstring interactions: α' -expanding loop integrands

In the low-energy effective action of string theories, non-abelian gauge interactions and supergravity are augmented by infinite towers of higher-mass-dimension operators. We propose a new method to construct one-loop matrix elements with insertions of operators D 2k F n and D 2k R n in the tree-level effective action of type-I and type-II superstrings. Inspired by ambitwistor string theories, our method is based on forward limits of moduli-space integrals using string tree-level amplitudes with two extra points, expanded in powers of the inverse string tension α'. Similar to one-loop ambitwistor computations, intermediate steps feature non-standard linearized Feynman propagators which eventually recombine to conventional quadratic propagators. With linearized propagators the loop integrand of the matrix elements obey one-loop versions of the monodromy and KLT relations. We express a variety of four- and five-point examples in terms of quadratic propagators and formulate a criterion on the underlying genus-one correlation functions that should make this recombination possible at all orders in α'. The ultraviolet divergences of the one-loop matrix elements are crosschecked against the non-separating degeneration of genus-one integrals in string amplitudes. Conversely, our results can be used as a constructive method to determine degenerations of elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph forms at arbitrary weight.

Generalized dualities and supergroups

Abstract Using a recently developed formulation of double field theory in superspace, the graviton,B-field, gravitini, dilatini, and Ramond-Ramond bispinor are encoded in a single generalized supervielbein. Duality transformations are encoded as orthosymplectic transformations, extending the bosonic O(D,D) duality group, and these act on all constituents of the supervielbein in an easily computable way. We first review conventional non-abelian T-duality in the Green-Schwarz superstring and describe the dual geometries in the language of double superspace. Since dualities are related to super-Killing vectors, this includes as special cases both abelian and non-abelian fermionic T-duality. We then extend this approach to include Poisson-Lie T-duality and its generalizations, including the generalized coset construction recently discussed in [arXiv:1912.11036]. As an application, we construct the supergeometries associated with the integrableλandηdeformations of the AdS 5 × S 5 superstring. The deformation parametersλandηare identified with the possible one-parameter embeddings of the supergravity frame within the doubled supergeometry. In this framework, the Ramond-Ramond bispinors are directly computable purely from the algebraic data of the supergroup.

Testing α -attractor quintessential inflation against CMB and low-redshift data

Due to universality and attractor properties, α-attractor quintessential inflation establishes direct relations between inflationary observables such as the scalar tilt n s and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, and late-time dark energy equation of state parameters w 0 and w a . In this work, we examine three different physically motivated regimes, considering complete freedom in the parameter α, models inspired by supergravity where α takes on values up to α = 7/3, and Starobinsky inflation (α = 1). We investigate the consistency and constraints imposed by Cosmic Microwave Background measurements from the Planck satellite, B-mode polarization data from the BICEP/Keck collaboration, and low-redshift observations. Additionally, we consider small-scale CMB measurements released by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, which give results approaching the Harrison– Zel’dovich spectrum (n s ≈ 1). Here α-attractors lead to an improved fit over $\Lambda$CDM. For the large-scale CMB measurements, α ≳ 2 models can provide equally good fits as $\Lambda$CDM

On the realization of WIMPflation

In this work, we consider models for inflation with a stable inflation. Reheating is achieved through scattering processes such as ΦΦ → h h, where h is the Standard Model Higgs boson. We consider the reheating process in detail and show that for a relatively large coupling (needed for the late annihilations of the inflation during freeze-out), reheating is almost instantaneous leading to a relatively high reheating temperature. The process ΦΦ ↔ h h brings the inflation back into equilibrium, leading to a well studied scalar singlet dark matter candidate and Higgs portal model. We argue that such models can be derived from no-scale supergravity.

Mode stability for massless scalars in five-dimensional black hole backgrounds

The mode stability of the Kerr black hole in four dimensions was demonstrated by Whiting in 1989, by separating the Teukolsky equation that describes gravitational perturbations and then transforming the radial and angular equations in such a way that the problem can be reformulated as a wave equation in an auxiliary spacetime in which the proof of stability is greatly simplified, owing to the absence of an ergoregion. As a preliminary step towards extending these ideas to higher-dimensional black holes, we study the mode stability of the massless scalar wave equation in the five-dimensional black hole solutions of Einstein gravity and supergravity. We show how the wave equation can again be mapped into one in an auxiliary spacetime in which there is no ergoregion, allowing us to give a proof of the mode stability of the solutions of the scalar wave equation.

Right-handed slepton bulk region for dark matter in generalized no-scale F -SU(5) with effective supernatural supersymmetry

We propose generalized no-scale supergravity, the simplest scenario for effective supernatural supersymmetry, naturally solving the supersymmetry electroweak fine-tuning problem and including natural dark matter. A light right-handed slepton bulk region is realized in F -SU(5) and the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model. The bulk may be beyond the LHC reach, although it can be probed at the 1000-day LUX-ZEPLIN, Future Circular Collider at CERN, Circular Electron-Positron Collider, and Hyper-Kamiokande. Precision unification and the scale of supersymmetry

In this paper, we study the implications of precise gauge coupling unification on supersymmetric particle masses. We argue that precise unification favors the superpartner masses that are in the range of several TeV and well beyond. We demonstrate this in the minimal supersymmetric theory with a common sparticle mass threshold, and two simple high-scale scenarios; minimal supergravity and minimal anomaly-mediated supersymmetry. We also identify candidate models with a Higgsino or a wino dark matter candidate. Finally, the analysis shows unambiguously that unless one takes foggy naturalness notions too seriously, the lack of direct superpartner discoveries at the LHC has not diminished the viability of supersymmetric unified theories in general nor even precision unification in particular. Higher spin mode stability for STU black hole backgrounds

This article studies mode stability of a four-dimensional rotating black hole with four pairwise equal U(1) charges derived in the framework of supergravity or the low energy string theory which is known now as STU black hole. We investigate bosonic perturbations in a proposed equation of the Teukolsky type for probe fields of different spins through the transformation technique devised by Whiting in 1989. Lastly, we introduce connection relations inspired by the work of Duztaş to prove the absence of unstable modes that solve the torsion-modified Dirac equation appropriate for this black hole background.

Perturbations of Gibbons-Maeda black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories

The study of perturbations around black hole backgrounds in general relativity and Einstein-Maxwell theory has a long history, going back to the work of Regge and Wheeler in the 1950s. As part of a broader investigation of perturbations around black holes in supergravity, we describe here our results for the perturbations around the Gibbons-Maeda static charged black holes in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories. Our analysis follows the general strategy developed by Chandrasekhar and Xanthopoulos for the perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. Here, the analysis is considerably more involved, because of the presence of the dilaton field, which couples to the other polar modes. We nonetheless find that the problem is completely solvable, in the sense that one can separate variables and eventually describe all the perturbations in terms of diagonalised second-order radial equations. We are able to prove the mode stability of all the Gibbons-Maeda black hole solutions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Frozen generalized symmetries

M-theory frozen singularities are (locally) D - or E -type orbifold singularities with a background fractional C 3 -monodromy surrounding them. In this paper, we revisit such backgrounds and address several puzzling features of their physics. We first give a top-down derivation of how the D - or E -type 7D N = 1 gauge theory directly “freezes” to a lower-rank gauge theory due to the C 3 background. This relies on a Hanany-Witten effect of fractional M5 branes and the presence of a gauge anomaly of fractional D p probes in the circle reduction. Additionally, we compute defect groups and 8D symmetry topological field theories of the 7D frozen theories in several duality frames. We apply our results to understanding the evenness condition of strings ending on O 7 + planes, and calculating the global forms of supergravity gauge groups of M-theory compactified on T 4 / Γ with frozen singularities. We also revisit IIA A D E singularities with a C 1 -monodromy along a 1-cycle in the boundary lens space and show that this freezes the gauge degrees of freedom via confinement.
