Refined room-temperature equation of state of Bi up to 260 GPa

At room temperature, bismuth undergoes several structural transitions with increasing pressure before taking on a body-centered cubic (bcc) phase at approximately 8 GPa. The bcc structure is stable to the highest measured pressure and its simplicity, along with its high compressibility and atomic number, makes it an enticing choice as a pressure calibrant. Here, we present three data sets on the compression of bismuth in a diamond anvil cell in a neon pressure medium, up to a maximum pressure of about 260 GPa. The use of a soft pressure medium reduces deviatoric stress when compared to previous work. With an expanded pressure range, a higher point density, and a decreased uniaxial stress component, we are able to provide more reliable equation of state parameters. We also conduct density functional theory electronic-structure calculations that confirm that the bcc phase is energetically favored at high pressure.

Time-dependent approach to inelastic scattering spectroscopies in and away from equilibrium: Beyond perturbation theory

We propose a nonperturbative numerical approach to calculate the spectrum of a many-body Hamiltonian with time and momentum resolution by exactly recreating a scattering event using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Akin to an actual inelastic scattering experiment, we explicitly account for the incident and scattered particles (e.g., photons, neutrons, electrons, etc.) in the Hamiltonian and obtain the spectrum by measuring the energy and momentum lost by the particle after interacting with the sample. We illustrate the method by calculating the spin excitations of a Mott-insulating Hubbard chain after a sudden quench with the aid of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. Our formalism can be applied to different forms of spectroscopies, such as neutron and Compton scattering and electron-energy-loss spectroscopy, as an example.

Noncollinear ground states of solids with a source-free exchange correlation functional

In this paper, we expand upon the source-free (SF) exchange correlation (XC) functional developed by Sangeeta Sharma and coworkers to plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) based on the projector augmented wave (PAW) method. This constraint is implemented by the current authors within the VASP source code, using a fast Poisson solver that capitalizes on the parallel three-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) implemented in VASP. Using this modified XC functional, we explore the improved convergence behavior that results from applying this constraint to the GGA-PBE+U+J functional. In the process, we compare the noncollinear magnetic ground state computed by each functional and their SF counterpart for a select number of magnetic materials in order to provide a metric for comparing with experimentally determined magnetic orderings. We observe significantly improved agreement with experimentally measured magnetic ground-state structures after applying the source-free constraint. Furthermore, we explore the importance of considering probability current densities in spin-polarized systems, even under no applied field. We analyze the XC torque as well, in order to provide theoretical and computational analyses of the net XC magnetic torque induced by the source-free constraint. Along these lines, we highlight the importance of properly considering the real-space integral of the source-free local magnetic XC field. Our analyses on probability currents, net torque, and constant terms draw additional links to the rich body of previous research on spin-current density functional theory (SCDFT), and pave the way for future extensions and corrections to the SF corrected XC functional.

Experimental and theoretical evidence of universality in superfluid vortex reconnections

The minimum separation between reconnecting vortices in fluids and superfluids obeys a universal scaling law with respect to time. The prereconnection and the postreconnection prefactors of this scaling law are different, a property related to irreversibility and to energy transfer and dissipation mechanisms. In the present work, we determine the temperature dependence of these prefactors in superfluid helium from experiments and a numeric model which fully accounts for the coupled dynamics of the superfluid vortex lines and the thermal normal fluid component. At all temperatures, we observe a pre- and postreconnection asymmetry similar to that observed in other superfluids and in classical viscous fluids, indicating that vortex reconnections display a universal behavior independent of the small-scale regularizing dynamics. We also numerically show that each vortex reconnection event represents a sudden injection of energy in the normal fluid. Finally we argue that in a turbulent flow, these punctuated energy injections can sustain the normal fluid in a perturbed state, provided that the density of superfluid vortices is large enough.

World beyond the nearest neighbors

The structure beyond the nearest neighbor atoms in liquid and glass is characterized by the medium-range order (MRO). In the conventional approach, the MRO is considered to result directly from the short-range order (SRO) in the nearest neighbors. To this bottom–up approach starting with the SRO, we propose to add a top–down approach in which global collective forces drive liquid to form density waves. The two approaches are in conflict with each other, and the compromise produces the structure with the MRO. The driving force to produce density waves provides the stability and stiffness to the MRO, and controls various mechanical properties. This dual framework provides a novel perspective for description of the structure and dynamics of liquid and glass.

Multifractally-enhanced superconductivity in thin films

The multifractal superconducting state originates from the interplay of Anderson localization and interaction effects. In this article we overview the recent theory of the superconductivity enhancement by multifractality and extend it to describe the spectral properties of superconductors on the scales of the order of the superconducting gap. Specifically, using the approach based on renormalization group within the nonlinear sigma model, we develop the theory of a multifractal superconducting state in thin films. We derive a modified Usadel equation that incorporates the interplay of disorder and interactions at energy scales larger than the spectral gap and study the effect of such an interplay on the low-energy physics. We determine the spectral gap at zero temperature which occurs to be proportional to the multifractally enhanced superconducting transition temperature. The modified Usadel equation results in the disorder-averaged density of states that, near the spectral gap, resembles the one obtained in the model of a spatially random superconducting order parameter. We reveal strong mesoscopic fluctuations of the local density of states in the superconducting state. Such strong mesoscopic fluctuations imply that the interval of energies in which the superconducting gap establishes is parametrically large in systems with multifractally-enhanced superconductivity.

Superconducting valence bond fluid in lightly doped eight-leg $t-J$ cylinders

Superconductivity in doped quantum paramagnets has been a subject of long theoretical inquiry. In this work, we report a density matrix renormalization group study of lightly doped $t-J$ models on the finite-width square lattice (doped hole densities $δ$ = 1/12 and 1/8) with parameters for which previous studies have suggested that the undoped system in 2D is either a quantum spin liquid or a valence bond crystal. Our studies are performed on cylinders with width up to 8. Here, ground-state correlations are found to be nearly identical for the “doped quantum spin liquid” and “doped valence bond crystal.” Upon increasing the cylinder widths from 4 to 8, we observed a significant strengthening of the quasi-long-range superconducting correlations and a dramatic suppression of any “competing” charge density wave order. Extrapolating from the observed behavior of the width eight cylinders, we speculate that the system has a nodeless $d$-wave superconducting ground state in the 2D limit.

High-pressure inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 - Clpyradine ) 4 ] B F 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3-Clpyradine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S=1 spin-chain material that shows no long-range magnetic order down to thermometer temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous ambient pressure inelastic neutron scattering experiments identified NBCT to be in the large-D quantum paramagnetic phase of the D/J phase diagram, where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. In this work, we extend the previous experiments to a hydrostatic pressure of 0.9 GPa. By comparing to density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find D/J increases from 1.5 to 3.2 as pressure increases from 0 GPa to 0.9 GPa, which pushes the system further into the large-D phase.

Singlet, triplet, and pair density wave superconductivity in the doped triangular-lattice moiré system

Recent experimental progress has established the twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) as a highly tunable platform for studying many-body physics. Particularly, the homobilayer TMDs under displacement field are believed to be described by a generalized triangular-lattice Hubbard model with a spin-dependent hopping phase θ. To explore the effects of θ on the system, we perform density matrix renormalization group calculations for the relevant triangular lattice t-J model. By changing θ at small hole doping, we obtain a region of quasi-long-range superconducting order coexisting with charge and spin density wave within 0 < θ < π/3. The superconductivity is composed of a dominant spin singlet d-wave and a subdominant triplet p-wave pairing. Intriguingly, the S z = ±1 triplet pairing components feature pair-density waves. In addition, we find a region of triplet superconductivity coexisting with charge-density wave and ferromagnetism within π/3 < θ < 2π/3, which is related to the former phase at smaller θ by a combined operation of spin-flip and gauge transformation. Furthermore, our findings provide insights and directions for experimental search for exotic superconductivity in twisted TMD systems.

Conditional probability density functional theory

Here we present conditional probability (CP) density functional theory (DFT) as a formally exact theory. In essence, CP-DFT determines the ground-state energy of a system by finding the CP density from a series of independent Kohn-Sham (KS) DFT calculations. By directly calculating CP densities, we bypass the need for an approximate XC energy functional. In this paper we discuss and derive several key properties of the CP density and corresponding CP-KS potential. Illustrative examples are used throughout to help guide the reader through the various concepts and theory presented. We explore a suitable CP-DFT approximation and discuss exact conditions, limitations, and results for selected examples.

Role of phonon softening induced by anisotropic fluctuations in the enhanced mobility at free glassy surfaces

The surface of a glassy material exhibits enhanced mobility compared to the bulk counterpart, however the underlying mechanism for this remains elusive. Herein, we present studies of the dynamical properties of a prototypical glass-forming metallic liquid Zr 50 Cu 50 as a function of the distance from both the free surface and pinned surface using molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the surface mobility increases gradually on approaching the free surface, with a concomitant increase of the non-Gaussianity. The phonon density of states at the free surface exhibits lower characteristic frequencies than in the bulk and pinned surface. These findings suggest phonon softening caused by anisotropic fluctuations at free surfaces as an alternative physical mechanism leading to the enhanced dynamics at free glassy surfaces from the perspective of collective excitations.

High-pressure structural systematics of dysprosium metal compressed in a neon pressure medium to 182 GPa

Here we present an experimental and theoretical study of dysprosium metal compressed in the soft pressure transmitting medium Ne up to 182 and 300 GPa, respectively. Angle-dispersive x-ray powder diffraction data from each of the high-pressure polymorphs shows anisotropic compression behavior indicating changes to the electron density distribution throughout its polymorphic landscape. We compare the monoclinic (mC4) and orthorhombic (oF16) structures for the collapsed structure for Dy above 82 GPa and verify that the oF16 structure offers a better fit to our data than the previously reported mC4 structure. Further, we have found that the oF16 structure undergoes similar anisotropic compression of its lattice parameters, with a turning point above 160 GPa; suggesting a potential phase transition at pressures much higher than achieved in this study. Density functional theory calculations show the likely candidate for this new high-pressure phase is the isosymmetric oF8 structure, which is predicted to be lower in energy than the oF16 structure above 275 GPa.

Topological Superconductivity in the Doped Chiral Spin Liquid on the Triangular Lattice

It has been established that the undoped, i.e., δ = 0 , system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region 0.32 ≤ J χ / J ≤ 0.56 . Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with d ± i d wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. Overall, our results provide direct evidences that doping the CSL on the triangular lattice can naturally give rise to topological superconductivity.

Correlation energy of the uniform electron gas determined by ground-state conditional probability density functional theory

Conditional-probability density functional theory (CP-DFT) is a formally exact method for finding correlation energies from Kohn-Sham DFT without evaluating an explicit energy functional. We present details on how to generate accurate exchange-correlation energies for the ground-state uniform gas. We also use the exchange hole in a CP antiparallel spin calculation to extract the high-density limit. We give a highly accurate analytic solution to the Thomas-Fermi model for this problem, showing its performance relative to Kohn-Sham and may be useful at high temperatures. We explore several approximations to the CP potential. Furthermore, results are compared to accurate parameterizations for both exchange-correlation energies and holes.

Comparison Between the f-Electron and Conduction-Electron Density of States in the Falicov-Kimball Model at Low Temperature

The spinless Falicov-Kimball model is one of the simplest models of many-body physics. While the conduction-electron density of states is temperature independent in the normal state, the f -electron density of states is strongly temperature dependent—it has an orthogonality catastrophe singularity in the metallic phase and is gapped in the insulating phase. The question we address here is whether the spectral gap is the same for both electron species as T → 0. Finally, we find strong evidence to indicate that the answer is affirmative.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 – Clpyridine ) 4 ] BF 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3–Clpyridine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S = 1 spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down to temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT as being in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of D/J to the large-D quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, 11B-enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.3 K. Comparison to density matrix renormalization group calculations yields D/J = 1.51 and a significant rhombic single-ion anisotropy E (E/D ≈ 0.03, E/J ≈ 0.05). Here, these D, J, and E values place NBCT in the large-D QPM phase but precipitously near a quantum phase transition to a long-range ordered phase.

Neutron scattering study of the kagome metal Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5

Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 is a rare example of a correlated metal in which the Mn moments form a kagome lattice. The absence of magnetic ordering to the lowest temperatures suggests that geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions may lead to strong magnetic fluctuations. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 , finding that phonon scattering dominates for energies from ~20–50 meV. These results are in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersions and densities of states, and as well reproduce the measured specific heat. A weak magnetic signal was detected at energies less than ~10 meV, present only at the lowest temperatures. The magnetic signal is broad and quasielastic, as expected for metallic paramagnets.

Computational search for itinerant n -type and p -type magnetic semiconductors: Arsenopyrites as bipolar magnetic semiconductors

We report a computational search for three-dimensional bulk ferromagnetic semiconductors based on itinerant Stoner physics. Stoner-based ferromagnetic semiconductors require an unusual combination of high band edge density of states and moderate transport effective mass. Nonetheless, several potential materials are found. Here, we identify arsenopyrites, exemplified by FeAsS, as materials that, with suitable doping, exhibit ferromagnetic semiconducting behavior for both n- and p-type dopants. The existence of a material that becomes ferromagnetic for both p and n types may enable device concepts, for example, ferromagnetic p–n junction devices.
