The Modulated Crystal Structure of K 2 V 3 O 8

Weak lattice distortions can tune exchange pathways and magnetic interactions in square-lattice quantum magnets. K 2 V 3 O 8 is a mixed valence (V 4+ /V 5+ ) fresnoite oxide that exhibits strong spin–lattice coupling at low temperature. Here, we combine single-crystal neutron diffraction (90 K) and laboratory X-ray diffraction (50 K) to solve the low-temperature structure as an orthorhombic (3 + 1)D incommensurately modulated phase in superspace group Cmm2(β,0,1/2)0s0 [No. 196]. What initially appeared as two independent modulation vectors, q 1 = 0.3132(6)[$110$] + 1/2c* and q 2 = 0.3132(6)[$1\bar{10}$] + 1/2c*, are more naturally described as a single one-dimensional modulation wave q = 0.626(1)a* + 1/2c* in a C-centered orthorhombic lattice, related to the parent tetragonal cell by the transformation a + b, −a + b, c. Refinement with a 4-fold rotational twin inherited from the P4bm parent structure solves oxygen-dominated framework distortions and K + displacements. A de Wolff section (t = 0.40) enables a symmetry-mode decomposition, identifying three dominant mm2 (C 2v ) modes: GM3 for framework tilt, A5 for interlayer shear, and Z5 for c-axis breathing. The mode-resolved structure provides a unified, symmetry-based explanation for reported low-temperature Raman and IR anomalies and clarifies the structural origin of the spin–lattice coupling in the S = 1/2 two-dimensional quantum spin compound.

Out-of-plane magnetic phase diagram of the Kitaev quantum magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na 2⁢ Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 with Co 3d 7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At 0.01 T, we observe a thermal phase transition at T N = 27K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Upon increasing the magnetic field, a spin-floplike phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and T N . Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (d⁢M/⁢dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetization plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and Γ exchange interactions. Finally, we also determined the magnetization saturation field that helps constrain the energy scale of the exchange interactions.

The chaotic rotation of Hyperion

Under the assumption that the satellite is rotating about a principal axis that is normal to its orbit plane, a plot of spin rate-versus-orientation for Hyperion at the pericenter of its orbit has revealed a large, chaotic zone surrounding Hyperion's synchronous spin-orbit state. The chaotic zone is so large that it surrounds the 1/2 and 2 states, and libration in the 3/2 state is not possible. Rotation in the chaotic zone is also attitude-unstable. As tidal dissipation drives Hyperion's spin toward a nearly synchronous value, Hyperion necessarily enters the large chaotic zone, becoming attitude-unstable and tumbling. It is therefore predicted that Hyperion will be found to be tumbling chaotically.

New collective structures in Au 179 and their implications for the triaxial deformation of the Pt 178 core

The extremely neutron-deficient isotope 179 Au has been studied by a combination of in-beam γ-ray and isomeric-decay spectroscopy. For in-beam spectroscopy, the recoil-isomer tagging technique was employed, using the known 3/2 – , T 1/2 = 328 ns isomer. A new rotational band, associated with the unfavored signature band of the 1⁢ℎ 9/2 ⊕2f⁢ 7/2 proton-intruder configuration, was revealed. A previously unknown, high-spin isomeric state with an excitation energy of 1743(17) keV and T 1/2 = 2.16⁢(8) ⁢µs was discovered. Five decay paths were identified, some of them feeding previously unknown non-yrast excited states, associated with the 1⁢i 13/2 proton-intruder configuration. Calculations based on the particle-plus-triaxial-rotor model were performed to interpret the data. On the basis of these calculations, the new 1⁢ℎ 9/2 ⊕2f 7/2 rotational band is interpreted as due to triaxial deformation of the underlying configuration with β 2 ≈ 0.26 and γ ≈ 27°. In conclusion, observed non-yrast states of the positive-parity 1i 13/2 intruder configuration are interpreted as due to triaxial deformation with β 2 ≈ 0.26 and γ ≈ 20°.

Engineering collinear magnetization in hexagonal LuFeO 3 and magnetoelectric control of skyrmions in hexagonal 2D epilayers

Cubic, perovskite-structure ABO 3- and A 1–x A’ x BO 3 -type oxides have been investigated extensively while their hexagonal structure versions have not, even though they are multiferroic and can form heterostructures with hexagonal 2D materials. In particular, multiferroic 2D epilayers may lead to strong magnetoelectric coupling. Hexagonal RFeO 3 ferrites, where R is a rare-earth element (Lu, Yb, etc.), are excellent candidates, but their ferromagnetism isweak. In this paper, we employ density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations and first show that heavy electron doping of hexagonal LuFeO 3 (h-LFO), namely Lu 1–x Hf x FeO 3 (h-LHFO), leads to spin-disproportionation of the Fe sublattices and, especially for x = 1/2 and 2/3, to robust, room-temperature, out-of-plane, collinear ferrimagnetism that is stabilized by a Jahn-Teller metal-to-insulator transition. We then show that h-LHFO/h-2D heterostructures, where h-2D is the FE/ FM monolayer MnSTe, stabilize skyrmions without an external magnetic field and control their chirality by an external electric field through the h-LHFO polarization, opening up a new realm for magnetoelectric applications.

Attosecond XUV probing of vibronic quantum superpositions in Br 2 +

Ultrafast laser excitation can create coherent superpositions of electronic states in molecules and trigger ultrafast flow of electron density on a few femtosecond timescale. While recent attosecond experiments have addressed real-time observation of these primary photochemical processes, the underlying roles of simultaneous nuclear motions and how they modify and disturb the valence electronic motion remain uncertain. In this work, we investigate coherent electronic-vibrational dynamics induced among multiple vibronic levels of ionic bromine (Br 2 + ), including both spin-orbit (X 2 Π 3/2,g – X 2 Π 1/2,g ) and valence (A 2 Π 3/2,u – 4 Σ 3/2,u ) electronic superpositions, using attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Decay, revival, and apparent frequency shifts of electronic coherences are measured via characteristic quantum beats on the Br-3d core-level absorption signals. Quantum-mechanical simulations attribute the observed electronic decoherence to broadened phase distributions of nuclear wave packets on anharmonic potentials. Molecular vibronic structure is further revealed to be imprinted as discrete progressions in electronic beat frequencies. These results provide a future basis to interpret complex charge-migration dynamics in polyatomic systems.

Half-life measurement of the 199-keV isomeric state in Ga 76

Background: Isomeric states in atomic nuclei are a sensitive probe of their underlying microscopic structure and can be used to study the evolution of shell structure far from stability. Recent studies have identified and provided detailed spectroscopy of isomers in neutron-rich nuclei with Z = 28-50. Isomeric states in the odd-odd gallium isotopes have been reported for all gallium isotopes from A = 72 to A = 80 with the exception of 76 Ga. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to observe short-lived isomeric states in the vicinity of 78 Ni. Methods: In-beam fragmentation of a 86 Kr primary beam at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory produced radioactive ions which were delivered to and deposited in a Ce Br 3 scintillator coupled to a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube. Beta-delayed γ rays were measured by ancillary HPGe clover and LaBr 3 detectors which surrounded the implantation detector. Results: The previously observed J π = 1 + , 199-keV level in 76 Ga, populated following the β decay of 76 Zn, was identified as isomeric with a half-life of 34(1) stat. (8) sys. ns. Shell-model calculations suggest this state is formed by the coupling of protons in negative-parity configurations to 1/2 - neutron configurations. Transition strengths assuming a ground-state spin of J = 2 and J = 3 were determined from the experimental data.

Decay spectroscopy of 160 Eu: Quasiparticle configurations of excited states and structure of K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd

Background: Detailed spectroscopy of neutron-rich, heavy, deformed nuclei is of broad interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. Nuclei in the r-process path and following freeze-out region impact the resulting r-process abundance distribution, and the structure of nuclei midshell in both proton and neutron number helps to understand the evolution of subshell gaps and large deformation in these nuclei. Purpose: We aim to improve the understanding of the nuclear structure of 160 Gd, specifically the K π = 4 + bands, as well as study the β decay of 160 Eu into 160 Gd. Methods: High-statistics decay spectroscopy of 160 Gd resulting from the β-decay of 160 Eu was collected using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. Results: Two new excited states and ten new transitions were observed in 160 Gd. The β-decaying half-lives of the low- and high-spin isomers in 160 Eu were determined, and the low-spin state's half-life was measured to be t 1/2 = 26.0 (8) s, ≈ 16% shorter than previous measurements. Lifetimes of the two K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd were measured for the first time, as well as γ – γ angular correlations and mixing ratios of intense transitions out of those bandheads. Conclusions: Lifetimes and mixing ratios suggest that the hexadecapole phonon model of the K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd is preferred over a simple two-state strong mixing scenario, although further theoretical calculations are needed to fully understand these states. Additionally, the 1999.0-keV state in 160 Gd heavily populated in β decay is shown to have positive parity, which raises questions regarding the structure of the high-spin β-decaying state in 160 Eu.

Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Quasi-One-Dimensional FeBi 4 S 7

Here, we report a detailed study of the synthesis, composition, magnetic structure, and transport properties of a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet FeBi 4 S 7 that contains chains of edge-sharing FeS 6 octahedra. High-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, aided by variation of synthetic conditions, suggests that the true formula of the material is Fe 1.2 Bi 3.8 S 7 , due to the minor substitution of Fe into Bi sites. This finding is in agreement with crystal structure refinement from neutron powder diffraction data as well as with the small band gap of 0.23 eV determined from electrical transport measurements. Analysis of the neutron diffraction pattern collected below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of 64 K revealed ferromagnetic coupling between the Fe moments in the chains of FeS 6 octahedra. The overall ordering, however, is antiferromagnetic due to the antiparallel arrangement of moments on neighboring chains. The collinear spin arrangement is described by a k-vector (1, 0, 1/2), which indicates doubling of the unit cell in the c direction and the loss of the C-centering translation as compared to the nuclear cell. The ferromagnetic nature of the sulfide-bridged chains of Fe 2+ ions in FeBi 4 S 7 , in contrast to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Fe moments in compounds with similar structural fragments, can be justified by the analysis of metric parameters that characterize the Fe–S bonding in these materials.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .

Charge ordering in Ir dimers in the ground state of Ba 5 AlIr 2 O 11

It has been well established experimentally that the interplay of electronic correlations and spin-orbit interactions in Ir 4+ and Ir 5+ oxides results in insulating J eff = 1/2 and J eff = 0 ground states, respectively. However, in compounds where the structural dimerization of iridium ions is favorable, the direct Ir d-d hybridization can be significant and takes a key role. Here, in this study, we investigate the effects of direct Ir d-d hybridization in comparison with electronic correlations and spin-orbit coupling in Ba 5 AlIr 2 O 11 , a compound with Ir dimers. Using a combination of ab initio many-body wave-function quantum chemistry calculations and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we elucidate the electronic structure of Ba 5 AlIr 2 O 11 . We find excellent agreement between the calculated and the measured spin-orbit excitations. Contrary to expectations, the analysis of the many-body wave function shows that the two Ir (Ir 4+ and Ir 5+ ) ions in the Ir 2 O 9 dimer unit in this compound preserve their local J eff character close to 1/2 and 0, respectively. The local point group symmetry at each of the Ir ions plays an important role, significantly limiting the direct d-d hybridization. Our results emphasize that minute details in the local crystal field environment can lead to dramatic differences in the electronic states in iridates and 5d oxides in general.

Universal Effective Charges in the 𝑠⁢𝑑 and 𝑓⁡𝑝 Shells

The 247-keV state in 54 Sc, populated in the 𝛽 decay of 54 Ca, is reported here as a nanosecond isomer with a half-life of 26.0(22) ns. The state is interpreted as the 1 + member of the 𝜋⁢𝑓 7/2 ⊗ 𝜈⁢𝑓 5/2 spin-coupled multiplet, which decays to the 3 + ,𝜋⁢𝑓 7/2 ⊗ 𝜈⁢𝑝 1/2 ground state. The new half-life corresponds to a pure 𝐸⁢2 transition with a strength of 1.93(16) W.u., providing the most precise, unambiguous 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2) value in the neutron-rich 𝑓⁡𝑝 region to date for a nucleus with valence protons above 𝑍 = 20. Notably, it is roughly 4 times larger than the 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2;1/2 − → 5/2 − ) value in 55 Ca. The results, as compared to semiempirical and ab initio shell-model calculations, indicate (1) a weak 𝑁 = 34 subshell gap relative to 𝑁 = 32, (2) a large 𝐸⁢2 enhancement in Sc as compared to Ca due to 1⁢𝑝 − 1⁢ℎ proton excitations across 𝑍 = 28, and (3) empirical effective proton and neutron charges 𝑒 𝜋 = 1.30⁢(8)⁢𝑒 and 𝑒 𝜈 = 0.452⁢(7)⁢𝑒, respectively, that are in contrast to reports of 𝑒 𝜋 ≈1.1–1.15⁢𝑒 and 𝑒 𝜈 ≈ 0.6–0.8⁢𝑒 for 𝑓⁡𝑝-shell nuclei near 𝑁 = 𝑍. Here, we demonstrate that these reports are erroneous and that, in fact, a universal set of effective charges can be used across the 𝑠⁢𝑑 and 𝑓⁡𝑝 shells.

Squeezed spin states: Squeezing the spin uncertainty relations

The notion of squeezing in spin systems is clarified, and the principle for spin squeezing is shown. Two twisting schemes are proposed as building blocks for spin squeezing and are shown to reduce the standard quantum noise, s/2, of the coherent S-spin state down to the order of S(sup 1/3) and 1/2. Applications to partition noise suppression are briefly discussed.

Broadband cross polarization for ultra-wideline magic-angle spinning NMR

Over the past decade, there has been a sustained interest in using frequency-swept (FS) pulses for the efficient acquisition of wideline and ultra-wideline (UW) NMR powder patterns. Such experiments are typically conducted under static conditions, employing both direct- and indirect-excitation methods (i.e., WCPMG and BRAIN-CP/WCPMG, respectively). Recently, Koppe et al. demonstrated that the WCPMG pulse sequence can be used to efficiently acquire wideline and UW NMR spectra with spinning sideband (SSB) manifolds under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions, capitalizing on the increased signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) afforded by MAS. To date, there have been only a few instances of broadband cross-polarization (CP) experiments using FS pulses under MAS conditions and no applications to systems exhibiting wideline and/or ultra-wideline powder patterns, despite the clear advantages these experiments could offer. Herein, we demonstrate that FS pulses selectively applied to a single sideband of the S spin can be used for efficient 1 H-S polarization transfer to S = 1/2 nuclides with large anisotropic chemical shift interactions at slow to moderate MAS rates. The Hartmann–Hahn matching conditions in BRAIN-CP/WCPMG-MAS experiments bear similarity to those of standard CP sequences, yet operate over UW frequency ranges and only require low-amplitude RF pulses on the S channel. Crucial to the success of the BRAIN-CP/WCPMG-MAS experiment is careful calibration of the RF amplitude, transmitter offset, and effective frequency sweep of the FS pulse applied to the S spins at a given MAS rate. Thus, by means of numerical simulations and experimental testing, we provide recommendations for the parameterization and setup of BRAIN-CP/WCPMG-MAS experiments for their most efficient use. Results showcasing the capability of the BRAIN-CP/WCPMG-MAS pulse sequence are presented, including applications to 119 Sn, 195 Pt, and 103 Rh NMR.

Chemical design of electronic and magnetic energy scales of tetravalent praseodymium materials

Lanthanides in the trivalent oxidation state are typically described using an ionic picture that leads to localized magnetic moments. The hierarchical energy scales associated with trivalent lanthanides produce desirable properties for e.g., molecular magnetism, quantum materials, and quantum transduction. Here, we show that this traditional ionic paradigm breaks down for praseodymium in the tetravalent oxidation state. Synthetic, spectroscopic, and theoretical tools deployed on several solid-state Pr 4+ -oxides uncover the unusual participation of 4f orbitals in bonding and the anomalous hybridization of the 4f 1 configuration with ligand valence electrons, analogous to transition metals. The competition between crystal-field and spin-orbit-coupling interactions fundamentally transforms the spin-orbital magnetism of Pr 4+ , which departs from the J eff = 1/2 limit and resembles that of high-valent actinides. Our results show that Pr 4+ ions are in a class on their own, where the hierarchy of single-ion energy scales can be tailored to explore new correlated phenomena in quantum materials.

Preliminary results of the satellite orbit determination of Mariner Mars 1971.

The preflight planning and real-time experience relating to the navigation of the first artificial satellite placed about a distant planet is presented. Results of determining the orbit of Mariner 9 are presented and contrasted against the preflight simulation test results. It is concluded that the position of Mariner 9 was located to 40 km before coefficients of the gravity field of Mars were estimated. The planet Mars has been found to be 3 to 4 times gravitationally rougher than expected, with the dominant features, the 2nd order tesserals C22 and S22, causing the orbital period of Mariner 9 to oscillate with an amplitude of 40 seconds and a wavelength of 19.5 days. The direction of the Mars spin axis has been relocated from the Camichel-Burton value by 1/2 degree.

Electric fields and substrates dramatically accelerate spin relaxation in graphene

Electrons in graphene are theoretically expected to retain spin states much longer than most materials, making graphene a promising platform for spintronics and quantum information technologies. Here, in this work, we use first-principles density-matrix (FPDM) dynamics simulations to show that interaction with electric fields and substrates strongly enhances spin relaxation through scattering with phonons. Consequently, the relaxation time at room temperature reduces from microseconds in free-standing graphene to nanoseconds in graphene on the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate, which is the order of magnitude typically measured in experiments. Further, inversion symmetry breaking by hBN introduces a stronger asymmetry in electron and hole spin lifetimes than predicted by the conventional D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) model for spin relaxation. Deviations from the conventional DP model are stronger for in-plane spin relaxation, resulting in out-of-plane to in-plane lifetime ratios much greater than 1/2 with a maximum close to the Dirac point. These FPDM results, independent of symmetry-specific assumptions or material-dependent parameters, also validate recent modifications of the DP model to explain such deviations. Overall, our results indicate that spin-phonon relaxation in the presence of substrates may be more important in graphene than typically assumed, requiring consideration for graphene-based spin technologies at room temperature.

Many-Body Benchmark of Electronic Charge and Spin Densities for Li 1–x NiO 2

Accurate benchmarks are particularly important for highly correlated oxides as mean-field approximations often fail to describe the subtle balance of charge transfer and magnetism in these materials with an accuracy comparable to experimental needs. Here we present accurate diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) results of the electronic charge and spin densities for the tunable highly correlated oxide Li 1–x NiO 2 for x = 0, 1/2, and 1. To enable quantitative comparisons, we introduce a robust density-partitioning scheme, extending Voronoi analysis to assign atomic charges from spatially noisy DMC densities. We then benchmark common approximations used in density functional theory (DFT). Comparison against DMC shows that r 2 SCAN delivers the most balanced performance across charge, spin, and radial density descriptors, nearly reproducing DMC results for LiNiO 2 and apical Ni sites in Li 0.5 NiO 2 . Hybrid functionals (PBE0, SCAN0) perform unexpectedly poorly, and PBE + U + V yields inconsistent trends between charge and spin densities. Therefore, the r 2 SCAN functional minimizes errors relative to DMC while capturing the variable valence of the Ni ion and also retaining the computational efficiency of DFT for large-scale simulations of the tunable structural and electronic phases of Li1−xNiO2. Our study highlights the importance of accurate benchmarking of the fundamental quantities involved in DFT to select appropriate DFT approximations in order to advance the predictive modeling of charge-transfer-driven phenomena in correlated electron systems.
