Two Young Planetary Systems around Field Stars with Ages between 20 and 320 Myr from TESS

Planets around young stars trace the early evolution of planetary systems. We report the discovery and validation of two planetary systems with ages ≲300 Myr from observations by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The 40--320 Myr old G star TOI-251 hosts a 2.74{sub −0.18}{sup +0.18} R{sub ⊕} mini-Neptune with a 4.94 day period. The 20--160 Myr old K star TOI-942 hosts a system of inflated Neptune-sized planets, with TOI-942b orbiting in a period of 4.32 days with a radius of 4.81{sub −0.20}{sup +0.20} R{sub ⊕} and TOI-942c orbiting in a period of 10.16 days with a radius of 5.79{sub −0.18}{sup +0.19} R{sub ⊕}. Though we cannot place either host star into a known stellar association or cluster, we can estimate their ages via their photometric and spectroscopic properties. Both stars exhibit significant photometric variability due to spot modulation, with measured rotation periods of ∼3.5 days. These stars also exhibit significant chromospheric activity, with age estimates from the chromospheric calcium emission lines and X-ray fluxes matching that estimated from gyrochronology. Both stars also exhibit significant lithium absorption, similar in equivalent width to well-characterized young cluster members. TESS has the potential to deliver a population of young planet-bearing field stars, contributing significantly to tracing the properties of planets as a function of their age.

Hot Stars with Kepler Planets Have High Obliquities

It has been known for a decade that hot stars with hot Jupiters tend to have high obliquities. Less is known about the degree of spin–orbit alignment for hot stars with other kinds of planets. Here, we reassess the obliquities of hot Kepler stars with transiting planets smaller than Neptune, based on spectroscopic measurements of their projected rotation velocities (vsin i). The basis of the method is that a lower obliquity—all other things being equal—causes sin i to be closer to unity and increases the value of vsin i. We sought evidence for this effect using a sample of 150 Kepler stars with effective temperatures between 5950 and 6550 K and a control sample of 101 stars with matching spectroscopic properties and random orientations. The planet hosts have systematically higher values of vsin i than the control stars, but not by enough to be compatible with perfect spin–orbit alignment. The mean value of sin i is 0.856 ± 0.036, which is 4σ away from unity (perfect alignment), and 2σ away from π/4 (random orientations). There is also evidence that the hottest stars have a broader obliquity distribution: when modeled separately, the stars cooler than 6250 K have 〈sin i〉=0.928±0.042 while the hotter stars are consistent with random orientations. This is similar to the pattern previously noted for stars with hot Jupiters. Based on these results, obliquity excitation for early-G and late-F stars appears to be a general outcome of star and planet formation, rather than being exclusively linked to hot Jupiter formation.

Search for Magnetic Accretion in SW Sextantis Systems

SW Sextantis systems are nova-like cataclysmic variables that have unusual spectroscopic properties, which are thought to be caused by an accretion geometry having part of the mass flux trajectory out of the orbital plane. Accretion onto a magnetic white dwarf is one of the proposed scenarios for these systems. To verify this possibility, we analyzed photometric and polarimetric time-series data for a sample of six SW Sex stars. We report possible modulated circular polarization in BO Cet, SW Sex, and UU Aqr with periods of 11.1, 41.2, and 25.7 minutes, respectively, and less significant periodicities for V380 Oph at 22 minutes and V442 Oph at 19.4 minutes. We confirm previous results that LS Peg shows variable circular polarization. However, we determine a period of 18.8 minutes, which is different from the earlier reported value. We interpret these periods as the spin periods of the white dwarfs. Our polarimetric results indicate that 15% of the SW Sex systems have direct evidence of magnetic accretion. We also discuss SW Sex objects within the perspective of being magnetic systems, considering the latest findings about the demography, formation, and evolution of cataclysmic variables.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: pyPipe3D Analysis Release for 10,000 Galaxies

We present here the analysis performed using the pyPipe3D pipeline for the final MaNGA data set included in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 17. This data set comprises more than 10,000 individual data cubes, being the integral field spectroscopic (IFS) galaxy survey with the largest number of galaxies. pyPipe3D processes the IFS data cubes to extract spatially resolved spectroscopic properties of both the stellar population and the ionized gas emission lines. A brief summary of the properties of the sample and the characteristics of the analyzed data are included. The article provides details of: (i) the analysis performed; (ii) a description of the pipeline; (iii) the adopted stellar population library; (iv) the morphological and photometric analysis; (v) the adopted data model for the spatially resolved properties derived; and (vi) the individual integrated and characteristic galaxy properties included in the final catalog. Comparisons with the results from a previous version of the pipeline for earlier data releases and from other tools using this data set are included. A practical example of how to use the full data set and the final catalog illustrates how to handle the delivered product. Our full analysis can be accessed and downloaded from our web page.

Measuring the Electrochemical Corrosion of 233U-doped UO2 in a Microfluidic Device

We have developed a microfluidic, ‘particle-attached microfluidic electrochemical’ device, or PAMEC, that uses microgram quantities of radioactive materials, such as uranium dioxide (UO2), rather than bulk specimens to both observe electrochemical changes and measure spectroscopic properties. The PAMEC device reduces the need for running experiments in a shielded facility and allows for in-operando, real-time investigations of electrochemical properties and morphological changes of micrograms of particles. This novel design offers a promising platform to investigate spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and other nuclear materials under various controlled condition, and to provide insights to nuclear waste management, and fuel performance

LDRD conclusion poster - Synthesizing Heterometallic Uranium Single Crystals to Understand the Influence of the Secondary Metals on Uranyl Axial Bond Strength

Understanding how transition metals influenced the chemistry of lanthanide and actinide (f-element) materials is critical for advancing separation technologies, materials design, and coordination chemistry. This project examined how incorporating first-row transition metals affected the structural and spectroscopic properties of f-element coordination polymers. In uranium(VI)-based systems synthesized with 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) ligands, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the presence of transition metals shortened the uranyl axial bond and induced a blue shift in its symmetric stretching vibration—evidence of increased bond strength. Electronic structure analysis, including Density of States (DOS) calculations using density functional theory (DFT), revealed altered orbital overlaps and highlighted the role of transition metal d-orbitals in modulating bonding. Raman modes were modeled using truncated structural fragments in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame, and although the predicted frequencies were lower than experimental values, they remained within expected ranges. In parallel, similar experiments with cerium (Ce) in the presence of cobalt (Co) and PDC demonstrated multi-step single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations—behavior not observed in the uranium systems. Initial products included light yellow, orange, and polycrystalline materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, conducted in collaboration with the Colorado School of Mines, identified the yellow phase as monometallic Ce(PDC)2(H2O)2·4H2O and the orange phase as heterometallic Ce2Co(PDC)4(H2O)6. After standing in solution for one week, both phases fully transformed into a dark yellow crystalline phase, [Ce3(PDC)5(H2O)8].6(H2O). Remarkably, this transformation was reversible—disturbing the equilibrium by removing some crystals caused reversion to the initial Ce(PDC)2(H2O)2·4H2O phase, highlighting dynamic behavior. All three structures were previously unreported. Solid-state UV-visible and Raman spectroscopy further distinguished these phases, revealing ligand-to-metal charge transfer involving Ce and characteristic d–d transitions from Co(II). The precise mechanism driving these transformations remained unclear; however, pH-dependent experiments confirmed that the transformation did not occur when the pH decreased. Overall, the project demonstrated that transition metals could be employed to tune bonding interactions, structural dimensionality, and optical properties in f-element materials, establishing new pathways for designing functional heterometallic systems. The work resulted in several novel structural discoveries and fostered productive collaborations with the University of Notre Dame and the Colorado School of Mines.

Spectroscopic and Chemical Properties of Ionic Liquids: Computational Study

A brief account is given of highlights of our computational efforts – often in collaboration with experimental groups – to understand spectroscopic and chemical properties of ionic liquids (ILs). Molecular dynamics, including their inhomogeneous character, responsible for key spectral features observed in dielectric absorption, infra-red (IR) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements are elucidated. Mechanisms of chemical processes involving imidazolium-based ILs are illustrated for CO 2 capture and related reactions, transesterification of cellulose, and Au nanocluster-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling reaction with attention paid to differing roles of IL ions. A comparison with experiments is also made.

Spectroscopic Characterization of Plasmoid Properties During Pellet Fueling in W7-X

This study utilizes a spectroscopic approach to investigate the properties of plasmoids that are formed during the process of cryogenic hydrogen pellet fueling in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. An analysis of the Balmer series emissions was conducted using a diagnostic that was installed during the 2024 operational campaign. Electron temperature, density, and plasma beta ( β ) values can be inferred from the emissions of radiation from the ablation plasmoid. These values are essential for validating pellet ablation models and, in the future, optimizing fueling strategies in steady-state fusion devices.

Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. II. Statistical Properties from the First Data Release

We present the identification of changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument First Data Release and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16 at z ≤ 0.9. To confirm the CL-AGNs, we utilize spectral flux calibration assessment via an [O III ]-based calibration, pseudophotometry examination, and visual inspection. This rigorous selection process allows us to compile a statistical catalog of 561 CL-AGNs, encompassing 527 Hβ, 149 Hα, and 129 Mg II CL behaviors. In this sample, we find (1) a 283:278 ratio of turn-on to turn-off CL-AGNs. (2) The median Eddington ratio for CL-AGNs in the dim state is approximately λ Edd ∼ 0.01. (3) A strong correlation between the change in the luminosity of the broad emission lines (BELs) and variation in the continuum luminosity, with Mg II and Hβ displaying similar responses during CL phases. (4) The Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich diagram for CL-AGNs shows no statistical difference from the general AGN catalog. (5) Five CL-AGNs are associated with asymmetrical mid-infrared flares, possibly linked to tidal disruption events. Given the large CL-AGN sample and the stochastic sampling of spectra, we propose that some CL phenomena are inherently due to typical AGN variability during low accretion rates, particularly for CL phenomenon only occurring on one BEL. Finally, we introduce a monotonically dimming CL phase for objects characterized by a gradual decline over decades in the light curve and the complete disappearance of entire BELs in faint spectra, indicative of a real transition in the accretion disk.

PAC in DESI. I. Galaxy stellar mass function into the 10 6 M ⊙ frontier

The Photometric objects Around Cosmic webs (PAC) method integrates cosmological photometric and spectroscopic surveys, offering valuable insights into galaxy formation. PAC measures the excess surface density of photometric objects, $\bar{n}_2w_{{\rm {p}}}$, with specific physical properties around spectroscopic tracers. In this study, we improve the PAC method to make it more rigorous and eliminate the need for redshift bins. We apply the enhanced PAC method to the DESI Y1 BGS Bright spectroscopic sample and the deep Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) photometric sample, obtaining $\bar{n}_2w_{{\mathrm {p}}}$ measurements across the complete stellar mass range, from $10^{5.3}$ to $10^{11.5}\,{\rm M}_{\odot }$ for blue galaxies, and from $10^{6.3}$ to $10^{11.9}\,{\rm M}_{\odot }$ for red galaxies. We combine $\bar{n}_2w_{{\rm {p}}}$ with $w_{{\rm {p}}}$ measurements from the BGS sample, which is not necessarily complete in stellar mass. Assuming that galaxy bias is primarily determined by stellar mass and colour, we derive the galaxy stellar mass functions (GSMFs) down to $10^{5.3}\,{\rm M}_{\odot }$ for blue galaxies and $10^{6.3}\,{\rm M}_{\odot }$ for red galaxies, while also setting lower limits for smaller masses. The blue and red GSMFs are well described by single and double Schechter functions, respectively, with low-mass end slopes of $\alpha _{\rm {blue}}=-1.54^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$ and $\alpha _{\rm {red}}=-2.50^{+0.08}_{-0.08}$, resulting in the dominance of red galaxies below $10^{7.6}\,{\rm M}_{\odot }$. Stage-IV cosmological photometric surveys, capable of reaching 2–3 mag deeper than DECaLS, present an opportunity to explore the entire galaxy population in the local universe with PAC. This advancement allows us to address critical questions regarding the nature of dark matter, the physics of reionization, and the formation of dwarf galaxies.

Consistency-Enhanced Evolution for Variable Selection Can Identify Key Chemical Information from Spectroscopic Data

In the last few decades, spectroscopic techniques such as near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy have gained wide applications in several industries, such as the pharmaceutical, agricultural, oil, and gas industries. As a result, various soft sensors have been developed to predict sample properties from spectroscopic readings. Because the spectroscopic readings at different wavelengths, especially at the adjacent wavelengths, are highly correlated, it has been shown that variable selection could significantly improve a soft sensor’s prediction performance while reducing the model complexity. To improve the prediction performance, most variable selection methods focus on identifying the variables (i.e., wavelengths or wavelength segments) that are strongly correlated with the dependent variable. Although many successful applications have been reported, these variable selection methods do have their limitations. Specifically, the selected wavelengths sometimes show little connection to the chemical bounds or functional groups presenting in the sample. In addition, the selected variables can be quite sensitive to the choice of the training samples. In this work, we address these limitations from a different perspective: if a variable selection algorithm can identify the truly relevant input variables, it should consistently identify the same subset of variables regardless of the choice of the training samples. Therefore, we propose a variable selection method that aims to improve the consistency of variable selection resulting from different training samples. Furthermore, the new algorithm is termed consistency-enhanced evolution for variable selection (CEEVS). To demonstrate the performance and robustness of CEEVS, we compare the proposed method with three representative variable selection methods using five published NIR data sets. These case studies clearly demonstrate that by improving the variable selection consistency, we can not only achieve improved prediction performance, but also identify key chemical information from spectroscopic data.

Altered excitation energy transfer between phycobilisome and photosystems in the absence of ApcG, a small linker peptide, in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a cyanobacterium

Phycobilisome (PBS) is a large pigment-protein complex in cyanobacteria and red algae responsible for capturing sunlight and transferring its energy to photosystems (PS). Spectroscopic and structural properties of various PBSs have been widely studied, however, the nature of so-called complex-complex interactions between PBS and PSs remains much less explored. In this work, we have investigated the function of a newly identified PBS linker protein, ApcG, some domain of which, together with a loop region (PB-loop in ApcE), is possibly located near the PBS-PS interface. Using Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, we generated an ApcG deletion mutant and probed its deletion effect on the energetic coupling between PBS and photosystems. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic characterization of the purified ΔApcG-PBS demonstrated that ApcG removal weakly affects the photophysical properties of PBS that the spectroscopic properties of terminal energy emitters are comparable to those of PBS from wild-type. However, analysis of fluorescence decay imaging datasets reveals that ApcG deletion induces disruptions within the allophycocyanin (APC) core, resulting in the emergence (splitting) of two spectrally diverse subgroups with some short-lived APC. Profound spectroscopic changes of the whole ΔApcG mutant cell, however, emerge during state transition, a dynamic process of light scheme adaptation. The mutant cells in State I show a substantial increase in PBS-related fluorescence. On the other hand, global analysis of time-resolved fluorescence demonstrates that in general ApcG deletion does not alter or inhibit state transitions if it is interpreted only in terms of the changes of the PSII and PSI fluorescence emission intensity. Furthermore, the results revealed yet–to–be discovered mechanism of ApcG-docking induced excitation energy transfer regulation within PBS or to Photosystems.

Bio-derived sustainable aviation fuels—On the verge of powering our future

Jet fuels derived from biomass (bio-derived sustainable aviation fuels or BSAFs) offer a means of reducing net carbon emissions from aviation. Drop-in substitute fuels are attractive for use with existing and near-future aviation fleets and fueling infrastructure. Yet fuels derived from different biomass feedstock and produced by different production pathways have different fuel properties. These fuel property differences—especially ignition properties—offer challenges. This chapter discusses the current status, challenges, and opportunities of BSAFs. Strategies for closer property matching and for modeling and dealing with varied and uncontrolled properties are highlighted.

Disorder-induced spin excitation continuum and spin-glass ground state in the inverse spinel CuGa 2 O 4

Spinel-structured compounds serve as prototypical examples of highly frustrated systems and are promising candidates for realizing the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, structural disorder is inevitable in many real QSL candidates and its impact remains a topic of intense debate. In this work, we conduct comprehensive investigations on CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 , a spinel compound with significant structural disorder, focusing on its thermodynamic properties and spectroscopic behaviors. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to ∼80 mK, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, specific-heat, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. More intriguingly, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a broad gapless continuum of magnetic excitations around the Brillouin zone boundary, resembling the magnetic excitation spectra expected for a QSL. Nevertheless, a spin-freezing transition at 𝑇 f ≈ 0.88 K is identified from the cusp in the dc susceptibility curves, where a bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling curves occurs. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements show a peak close to 𝑇 f at low frequency, which shifts to higher temperature with increasing frequency. These results show that CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 has a spin-glass ground state, consistent with the establishment of short-range order inferred from the specific-heat measurements. Collectively, these results illustrate the crucial role of disorder in defining the excitation spectrum out of the disordered ground state. Furthermore, our findings shed light onto the broader class of 𝐴⁢𝐵 2 ⁢O 4 spinels and advance our understanding of the spin dynamics in magnetically disordered systems.

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Quasar Survey: Quasar Properties from Data Releases 6 to 9

We report the fourth installment in the series of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) quasar survey, which includes quasars observed between 2017 September and 2021 June. There are in total 13,066 quasars reliably identified, of which 6685 are newly discovered that are not reported in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR14 quasar catalog or Million Quasars catalog. Because LAMOST does not provide accurate absolute flux calibration, we recalibrate the spectra with the SDSS/Pan-STARRS1 multiband photometric data. The emission-line properties of Hα, Hβ, Mg II , and C Iv and the continuum luminosities are measured by fitting the recalibrated spectra. We also estimate the single-epoch virial black hole masses (M BH ) using the derived emission-line and continuum parameters. This is the first time that the emission-line and continuum fluxes were estimated based on LAMOST recalibrated quasar spectra. The catalog and spectra for these quasars are available online. After the 9 yr LAMOST quasar survey, there are in total 56,175 identified quasars, of which 24,127 are newly discovered. The LAMOST quasar survey not only discovers a great number of new quasars but also provides a database for investigating the spectral variability of the quasars observed by both LAMOST and SDSS and finding rare quasars, including changing-look quasars and broad absorption line quasars.
