Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with Improved Chiral Symmetry

We construct a family of Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with improved chiral properties, starting from a construction of Creutz-Horvath-Neuberger that provides a doubler-free Hamiltonian lattice regularization for Dirac fermions in even spacetime dimensions. We use a higher-order generalization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation due to Fujikawa, which yields an order-$k$ Hamiltonian overlap operator for each integer $k \geq 0$, with an exactly conserved but nonquantized chiral charge that becomes quantized as $k \to \infty$. Our construction provides physical insight into how Fujikawa's higher-order Ginsparg-Wilson relation improves chiral symmetry while reproducing the anomaly, highlighting the trade-offs inherent in any Hamiltonian lattice realization of an anomalous chiral symmetry. This class of Hamiltonian lattice regularizations, with their tunable chiral symmetry properties, offers potential advantages for quantum and tensor-network simulations.

Black branes with cosmological constant

We study neutral black branes with flat and curved worldvolumes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We reduce the equations governing the dynamics of such objects to one second-order ODE and perform various asymptotic expansions of the resulting equation. We also analyze regular geometries which have the same symmetries as the branes and interpolate between an empty interior and AdS asymptotics. We show that the dynamics of such spacetimes is governed by the Abel equation.

Closed Loop Time and the Topology of Totality

The author suggests a cosmology based on just two principles: (1) no boundaries to spacetime and (2) no physical infinities. On the hypothesis that these are exactly true, and that charge conjugation, parity and time reversal invariance (CPT) is a perfect symmetry at the big bang, answers are provided to many puzzles, such as what happened to the antimatter, what happened before the big bang, and what will happen in the far future? Consequences are that our universe U is closed (with positive curvature) and so the total energy, angular momentum and charge of the universe must be zero. At the big bang a universe-antiuniverse pair, UU¯ is created as a virtual fluctuation in what we may call Outer SpaceTime, along with a vast number of other disconnected universes—the multiverse. The CPT-conjugate U¯ has identical physics (and matter content) to U; other UU¯ pairs in the multiverse have different physics parameters. A consequence is that time at the fundamental particle level à la Feynman must be distinct from thermodynamic time. The UU¯ forms a closed loop.

Celestial Quantum Error Correction. Part II. From qudits to celestial CFT

A holographic CFT description of asymptotically flat spacetimes inherits vacuum degeneracies and IR divergences from its gravitational dual. We devise a Quantum Error Correcting (QEC) framework to encode both effects as correctable fluctuations on the CFT dual. The framework is physically motivated by embedding a chain of qudits in the so-called Klein spacetime and then taking a continuum 𝑁 → ∞ limit. At finite 𝑁 the qudit chain 1) enjoys a discrete version of celestial symmetries and 2) supports a Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code. The limit results in hard states with quantized BMS hair in the celestial torus forming the logical subspace, robust under errors induced by soft radiation. Technically, the construction leverages the recently studied 𝑤 1+∞ hierarchy of soft currents and its realization from a sigma model in twistor space.

Berry phase in quantum field theory: Diabolical points and boundary phenomena

We study aspects of Berry phase in gapped many-body quantum systems by means of effective field theory. Once the parameters are promoted to spacetime-dependent background fields, such adiabatic phases are described by Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) and similar terms. In the presence of symmetries, there are also quantized invariants capturing generalized Thouless pumps. Consideration of these terms provides constraints on the phase diagram of many-body systems, implying the existence of gapless points in the phase diagram which are stable for topological reasons. We describe such diabolical points, realized by free fermions and gauge theories in various dimensions, which act as sources of "higher Berry curvature" and are protected by the quantization of the corresponding WZW terms or Thouless pump terms. Here, these are analogous to Weyl nodes in a semimetal band structure. We argue that in the presence of a boundary, there are boundary diabolical points---parameter values where the boundary gap closes---which occupy arcs ending at the bulk diabolical points. Consideration of the topological effective action for the parameters also provides some new checks on conjectured infrared dualities and deconfined quantum criticality in 2+1d.

Partially celestial states and their scattering amplitudes

We study representations of the Poincaré group that have a privileged transformation law along a p -dimensional hyperplane, and uncover their associated spinor-helicity variables in D spacetime dimensions. Our novel representations generalize the recently introduced celestial states and transform as conformal primaries of S O ( p , 1 ) , the symmetry group of the p -hyperplane. We will refer to our generalized states as “partially celestial.” Following Wigner’s method, we find the induced representations, including spin degrees of freedom. Defining generalized spinor-helicity variables for every D and p , we are able to construct the little group covariant part of partially celestial amplitudes. Finally, we briefly examine the application of the pairwise little group to partially celestial states with mutually nonlocal charges. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Midisuperspace foam and the cosmological constant

Abstract Wheeler’s conjectured ‘spacetime foam’—large quantum fluctuations of spacetime at the Planck scale—could have important implications for quantum gravity, perhaps even explaining why the cosmological constant seems so small. Here I explore this problem in a midisuperspace model consisting of metrics with local spherical symmetry. Classically, an infinite class of ‘foamy’ initial data can be constructed, in which cancellations between expanding and contracting regions lead to a small average expansion even if Λ is large. Quantum mechanically, the model admits corresponding stationary states, for which the probability current is also nearly zero. These states appear to describe a self-reproducing spacetime foam with very small average expansion, effectively hiding the cosmological constant.

On small black holes in string theory

Abstract We discuss the worldsheet sigma-model whose target space is thed+1 dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild black hole. We argue that in the limit where the Hawking temperature of the black hole,T, approaches the Hagedorn temperature,T H , it can be described in terms of a generalized version of the Horowitz-Polchinski effective theory. Ford≥ 6, where the Horowitz-Polchinski EFT [1, 2] does not have suitable solutions, the modified effective Lagrangian allows one to study the black hole CFT in an expansion in powers ofd− 6 andT H −T. AtT=T H , the sigma model is non-trivial for alld> 6. It exhibits an enhanced SU(2) symmetry, and is described by a non-abelian Thirring model with a radially dependent coupling. The resulting picture connects naturally to the results of [3–5], that relate Schwarzschild black holes in flat spacetime at largedto the two dimensional black hole. We also discuss an analogous open string system, in which the black hole is replaced by a system of two separated D-branes connected by a throat. In this system, the asymptotic separation of the branes plays the role of the inverse temperature. At the critical separation, the system is described by a Kondo-type model, which again exhibits an enhanced SU(2) symmetry. At larged, the brane system gives rise to the hairpin brane [6].

Question of measuring spatial curvature in an inhomogeneous universe

The curvature of a spacetime, either in a topological sense, or averaged over superhorizon-sized patches, is often equated with the global curvature term that appears in Friedmann’s equation. In general, however, the Universe is inhomogeneous, and gravity is a nonlinear theory, thus any curvature perturbations violate the assumptions of the Friedmann-Lemaïtre-Robertson-Walker model; it is not necessarily true that local curvature, averaged over patches of constant-time surfaces, will reproduce the observational effects of global symmetry. Further, the curvature of a constant-time hypersurface is not an observable quantity, and can only be inferred indirectly. Here, we examine the behavior of curvature modes on hypersurfaces of an inhomogeneous spacetime nonperturbatively in a numerical relativistic setting, and how this curvature corresponds with that inferred by observers. We also note the point at which observations become sensitive to the impact of curvature sourced by inhomogeneities on inferred average properties, finding general agreement with past literature.

Color symmetry and confinement as an underlying superconformal structure in holographic QCD

Dedicated to the memory of our colleague, Harald Fritzsch, who, together with Murray Gell-Mann, introduced the color quantum number as the exact symmetry responsible for the strong interaction, thus establishing quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as a fundamental non-Abelian gauge theory. A basic understanding of hadron properties, however, such as confinement and the emergence of a mass scale, from first principles QCD has remained elusive: Hadronic characteristics are not explicit properties of the QCD Lagrangian and perturbative QCD, so successful in the large transverse momentum domain, is not applicable at large distances. In this article, we shall examine how this daunting obstacle is overcome in holographic QCD with the introduction of a superconformal symmetry in anti de Sitter (AdS) space which is responsible for confinement and the introduction of a mass scale within the superconformal group. When mapped to light-front coordinates in physical spacetime, this approach incorporates supersymmetric relations between the Regge trajectories of meson, baryon and tetraquark states which can be visualized in terms of specific SU(3) C color representations of quarks. Finally, we will also briefly discuss here the implications of holographic models for QCD color transparency in view of the present experimental interest.

Higher-rank tensor field theory of non-abelian fracton and embeddon

We formulate a new class of tensor gauge field theories in any dimension that is a hybrid class between symmetric higher-rank tensor gauge theory (i.e., higher-spin gauge theory) and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory. Our theory describes a mixed unitary phase interplaying between gapless and gapped topological order phases (which can live with or without Euclidean, Poincaré, or anisotropic symmetry, at least in ultraviolet high or intermediate energy field theory, but not yet to a lattice cutoff scale). The “gauge structure” can be compact, continuous, abelian or non-abelian. Our theory sits outside the paradigm of Maxwell electromagnetic theory in 1865 and Yang–Mills isospin/color theory in 1954. We discuss its local gauge transformation in terms of the ungauged vector-like or tensor-like higher-moment global symmetry. The non-abelian gauge structure is caused by gauging the non-commutative symmetries: a higher-moment symmetry and a charge conjugation (particle–hole) symmetry. Vector global symmetries along time direction may exhibit time crystals. We explore the relation of these long-range entangled matters to a non-abelian generalization of Fracton order in condensed matter, a field theory formulation of foliation, the spacetime embedding and Embeddon that we newly introduce, and possible fundamental physics applications to dark matter or dark energy.

Estimating global charge violating amplitudes from wormholes

We consider the scattering of high energy and ultra relativistic spherically symmetric shells in asymptotically AdS D spacetimes. We analyze an exclusive amplitude where a single spherically symmetric shell goes in and a single one comes out, such that the two have different global symmetry charges of the effective gravity theory. We study a simple wormhole configuration that computes the square of the amplitude and analyze its properties.

Photon rings around warped black holes

Abstract The black hole photon ring is a prime target for upcoming space-based VLBI missions seeking to image the fine structure of astrophysical black holes. The classical Lyapunov exponents of the corresponding nearly bound null geodesics control the quasinormal ringing of a perturbed black hole as it settles back down to equilibrium, and they admit a holographic interpretation in terms of quantum Ruelle resonances of the microstate dual to the Kerr black hole. Recent work has identified a number of emergent symmetries related to the intricate self-similar structure of the photon ring. Here, we explore this web of interrelated phenomena in an exactly soluble example that arises as an approximation to the near-extremal Kerr black hole. The self-dual warped AdS 3 geometry has a photon ring as well as S L ( 2 , R ) isometries and an exactly calculable quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum. We show explicitly that the geometric optics approximation reproduces the eikonal limit of the exact scalar QNM spectrum, as well as the approximate ‘near-ring’ wavefunctions. The S L ( 2 , R ) isometries are directly related to the emergent conformal symmetry of the photon ring in black hole images but are distinct from a recently discussed conformal symmetry of the eikonal QNM spectrum. The equivalence of the classical QNM spectrum—and thus the photon ring—to the quantum Ruelle resonances in the context of a spacetime with a putative holographic dual suggests that the photon ring of a warped black hole is indeed part of the black hole hologram.

Discovering exact, gauge-invariant, local energy-momentum conservation laws for the electromagnetic gyrokinetic system by high-order field theory on heterogeneous manifolds

Gyrokinetic theory is arguably the most important tool for numerical studies of transport physics in magnetized plasmas. However, exact local energy-momentum conservation laws for the electromagnetic gyrokinetic system have not been found despite the continuous effort. Without such local conservation laws, energy and momentum can be instantaneously transported across spacetime, which is unphysical and casts doubt on the validity of numerical simulations based on the gyrokinetic theory. The standard Noether procedure for deriving conservation laws from corresponding symmetries does not apply to gyrokinetic systems because the gyrocenters and electromagnetic fields reside on different manifolds. To overcome this difficulty, we develop a high-order field theory on heterogeneous manifolds for classical particle-field systems and apply it to derive exact, local conservation laws, in particular the energy-momentum conservation laws, for the electromagnetic gyrokinetic system. A weak Euler-Lagrange equation is established to replace the standard Euler-Lagrange equation for the particles. It is discovered that an induced weak Euler-Lagrange current enters the local conservation laws. And it is the new physics captured by the high-order field theory on heterogeneous manifolds. A recently developed gauge-symmetrization method for high-order electromagnetic field theories using the electromagnetic displacement-potential tensor is applied to render the derived energy-momentum conservation laws electromagnetic gauge-invariant.

Effective Field Theory islands from perturbative and nonperturbative four-graviton amplitudes

Theoretical data obtained from physically sensible field and string theory models suggest that gravitational Effective Field Theories (EFTs) live on islands that are tiny compared to current general bounds determined from unitarity, causality, crossing symmetry, and a good high-energy behavior. In this work, we present explicit perturbative and nonperturbative 2 → 2 graviton scattering amplitudes and their associated low-energy expansion in spacetime dimensions D ≥ 4 to support this notion. Our new results include a first example of gravity weakly coupled to a nonperturbative effective action. We show that, at energies below the mass of its nonperturbative matter, the D = 4, $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetric field theory in the confined phase lies on the same islands identified using four-dimensional perturbative models based on string theory and minimally-coupled matter circulating a loop. Furthermore, we generalize the previous four-dimensional perturbative models based on string theory and minimally-coupled massive spin-0 and spin-1 states circulating in the loop to D dimensions. Remarkably, we again find that the low-energy EFT coefficients lie on small islands. These results offer a useful guide towards constraining possible extensions of Einstein gravity.

Constraints on Quantum Gravity

Recently, it has become increasingly clear that there are constraints on the low-energy effective theories of quantum gravity that cannot be captured by the standard Wilsonian paradigm. For gravitational theories in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, we can formulate such constraints and aim to prove or falsify them using the AdS/CFT correspondence. I will review the work I did with Daniel Harlow on constraints on symmetries of quantum gravity. I will also discuss more recent progress in this holographic approach, and present the proof that Yifan Wang and I completed this year, which proves and strengthens a part of the Distance Conjecture that I proposed with Cumrun Vafa in 2006.

Topological contribution to the Bogoliubov coefficient for cosmological particle production

Particle production in cosmology is often efficiently computed in terms of Bogoliubov transforms. Restricting to a particular class of dispersion relationships, we identify a map between the number of particles produced in a special kinematic limit and a Stokes phenomena related topology of analytic continuation of the Bogoliubov coefficient functions. Intuitively, this kinematic limit corresponds to the long wavelength limit although a more precise description depends on the nature of the curved spacetime. To identify the topology, we reformulate the usual Bogoliubov computations as a type of SU(1, 1) gauged differential equation and utilize a special gauge together with a discrete symmetry that naturally characterizes the dispersion relationship. Using a dark matter model and a nonzero constant spatial curvature model, we estimate how such topological contributions will arise in physical applications. Heavy states in 3d gravity and 2d CFT

We discuss correlators of light fields in heavy states in AdS 3 gravity and holographic 2d CFTs. In the bulk, the propagator of free fields in AdS backgrounds containing a conical defect or a BTZ black hole can be obtained by solving a wave equation, as well as by the method of images. On the boundary, these geometries are sourced by heavy operator insertions, and the propagator is dual to a heavy-light (HHLL) correlator. By matching its expansion in Virasoro blocks to our bulk results, we determine the OPE coefficients of all contributing states in both the s and t channels. In the s channel, these states are excitations of the light field on top of the heavy state, and their OPE coefficients are the amplitudes to create them. The t-channel OPE is dominated by the Virasoro vacuum block, but there is also an infinite family of light two-particle states that contribute to the correlator. The OPE coefficients that couple these states to heavy operators represent their expectation values in heavy backgrounds. We determine them exactly, derive their asymptotic form at large twist, and discuss their behavior near and above the BTZ threshold, where they become thermal one-point functions.
