Kinematics reconstruction in solenoidal spectrometers operated in active target mode

Here, we discuss the reconstruction of low-energy nuclear reaction kinematics from charged-particle tracks in solenoidal spectrometers working in Active Target Time Projection Chamber mode. In this operation mode, reaction products are tracked within the active gas medium of the Active Target with a three dimensional space point cloud. We have inferred the reaction kinematics from the point cloud using an algorithm based on a linear quadratic estimator (Kalman filter). The performance of this algorithm has been evaluated using experimental data from nuclear reactions measured with the Active Target Time Projection Chamber (AT-TPC) detector.

Impact of Solenoid Induced Residual Magnetic Fields on The Prototype SSR1 CM Performance

A prototype cryomodule containing eight Single Spoke Resonators type-1 (SSR1) operating at 325 MHz and four superconducting focusing lenses was successfully assembled, cold tested, and accelerated beam in the framework of the PIP-II project at Fermilab. The impact of induced residual magnetic fields from the solenoids on performance of cavities is presented in this contribution. In addition, design optimizations for the production cryomodules as a result of this impact are highlighted.

Scorpius injector emittance measurements with solenoid scans

A classic scan solenoid can establish that the injector meets emittance requirements. Incorporating an aperture plate can validate predictions of much lower emittance. Measurements of beam parameters on the injector and ITS can inform predictions for the full LIA. Injector beam data is needed to tune the full LIA for initial turn-on and operation. Emittance measurements on the Scorpius injector are difficult because the beam is space-charge dominated. Emittance measurements on Scorpius injector and ITS will need large beam size to prevent overheating.

Transport of a Low-Energy Beam from the Scorpius Accelerator to the Final-Focus Solenoid

It may be required to use Scorpius for low-energy radiography of hydrodynamic experiments, perhaps as low as the 2-MeV injected beam kinetic energy. As presently designed, the downstream transport (DST) system will not work for energies less than about 4.5 MeV due to space-charge defocusing. For energies less than that the beam envelope expands to the wall before the first magnet can catch and focus it. More solenoids would have to be added to the DST lattice in order to transport a beam with KE < 4.5 MeV to the final focus.

Pulsed High Temperature Superconducting Central Solenoid for Revolutionizing Tokamaks

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has developed the technical foundation for a fast-ramping High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Central Solenoid Model Coil (CSMC), addressing key challenges in fusion energy advancement. This breakthrough enables the design of all-HTS pulsed tokamak power plants that promise to reduce projected electricity costs by 50% and overnight construction costs by 25% compared to steady-state tokamaks, while eliminating the need for complex external current drives.

Role of Parallel Solenoidal Electric Field on Energy Conversion in 2.5D Decaying Turbulence with a Guide Magnetic Field

We perform 2.5D particle-in-cell simulations of decaying turbulence in the presence of a guide (out-of-plane) background magnetic field. The fluctuating magnetic field initially consists of Fourier modes at low wavenumbers (long wavelengths). With time, the electromagnetic energy is converted to plasma kinetic energy (bulk flow+thermal energy) at the rate per unit volume of J· E for current density J and electric field E. Such decaying turbulence is well known to evolve toward a state with strongly intermittent plasma current. Here we decompose the electric field into components that are irrotational, E ir , and solenoidal (divergence-free), E so . E ir is associated with charge separation, and J · E ir is a rate of energy transfer between ions and electrons with little net change in plasma kinetic energy. Therefore, the net rate of conversion of electromagnetic energy to plasma kinetic energy is strongly dominated by J · E so , and for a strong guide magnetic field, this mainly involves the component E so,∥ parallel to the total magnetic field B. We examine various indicators of the spatial distribution of the energy transfer rate J ∥ · E so,∥ , which relates to magnetic reconnection, the best of which are (1) the ratio of the out-of-plane electric field to the in-plane magnetic field, (2) the out-of-plane component of the nonideal electric field, and (3) the magnitude of the estimate of current helicity.

Search for New Physics with the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment and QIS-enabled Technology

Understanding the fundamental nature of dark matter (DM)---its cosmological origin, constituents, and interactions---is one of the most important questions in fundamental science today. In this thesis, I present two novel and highly complementary approaches to cover the gaps in sensitivity of current DM searches. The searches are enabled by a first-of-its-kind reconstruction technique to search for hidden-sector particles using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) and by new advances in quantum sensing technology to search for axions and hidden-sector DM. In the first part of this thesis, I present a search for long-lived hidden sector particles, predicted by many extensions of the SM, using a novel technique to reconstruct decays of long-lived particles (LLPs) in the CMS muon detector. The innovative LLP reconstruction technique is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decays and to LLP masses below GeV. The search yields competitive sensitivity for proper lifetime 0.1--1000 m with the full Run 2 dataset recorded at the LHC between 2016--2018 at $\sqrt{s} = 13~$TeV. To extend the physics reach of this novel muon detector shower (MDS) signature, I present the model-independence of MDS and the reinterpretation of the search to a large number of LLP models, demonstrating its complementarity with proposed and existing dedicated LLP experiments. Finally, I present a new dedicated MDS trigger that improves the trigger efficiency by at least an order of magnitude and was deployed in 2022, at the start of Run 3 of the LHC operations. In the second part of the thesis, I present for the first time, the use of a novel quantum sensor, the low-noise and single-photon sensitive superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs), to directly detect dark matter. The low detection threshold and ultra-low dark count rate of SNSPDs can close the gap in DM discovery reach due to the current limitations in detector sensitivity. I will present my work on the development and characterization of SNSPDs for two entirely new experiments to directly detect axions via absorption and hidden-sector DM via electron scattering. The search for axions employs a novel broadband reflector technique with the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD). A unique parabolic mirror is then used to focus axion-converted photons to the SNSPDs, extending the reach to axion masses of 0.04--1 eV. On the other hand, by coupling the SNSPDs with gallium arsenide, a bright cryogenic scintillator well matched to SNSPD detection, a prototype sensing system can be built as a basis of new direct DM detection experiments capable of extending the discovery to DM masses as low as 1 MeV.
