Impact-Energized Transmitter

Impact-induced strain in piezoelectric ceramic could power a short-range transmitter. Proposed impact-energized radio transmission would eliminate the need for external power sources for batteries, which are often short lived and impractical to replace under operating conditions. Piezoelectric ceramic attached to impact head supplies energy to drive resonant circuit and antenna. Receiver tuned to resonant frequency receives short pulse.

Heart rate, multiple body temperature, long-range and long-life telemetry system for free-ranging animals

The design details and rationale for a versatile, long-range, long-life telemetry data acquisition system for heart rates and body temperatures at multiple locations from free-ranging animals are presented. The design comprises an implantable transmitter for short to medium range transmission, a receiver retransmitter collar to be worn for long-range transmission, and a signal conditioner interface circuit to assist in signal discrimination and demodulation of receiver or tape-recorded audio outputs. Implanted electrodes are used to obtain an ECG, from which R-wave characteristics are selected to trigger a short RF pulse. Pulses carrying heart rate information are interrupted periodically by a series of pulse interval modulated RF pulses conveying temperature information sensed at desired locations by thermistors. Pulse duration and pulse sequencing are used to discriminate between heart rate and temperature pulses as well as radio frequency interference. The implanted transmitter may be used alone for medium and short-range tracking, or with a receiver-transmitter collar that employs commercial tracking equipment for transmissions of up to 12 km. A system prototype has been tested on a dog.

Video Target Tracking and Ranging System

Proposed target tracking and ranging system uses two automatic video target trackers to keep two TV cameras trained on object being tracked. Microcomputer calculates range and range-rate information by triangulation. Input data for calculation are position coordinates of two cameras and pan and tilt aiming angles of two cameras. System is useful for target ranging at distances up to about 1,000 feet (300 m) in such applications as vehicle collision avoidance, traffic monitoring and surveillance. Also substitutes for short-range radar in situations where radar signal can not be tolerated.

Orbiter fuel cell improvement assessment

The history of fuel cells and the theory of fuel cells is given. Expressions for thermodynamic and electrical efficiencies are developed. The voltage losses due to electrode activation, ohmic resistance and ionic diffusion are discussed. Present limitations of the Orbiter Fuel Cell, as well as proposed enhancements, are given. These enhancements are then evaluated and recommendations are given for fuel cell enhancement both for short-range as well as long-range performance improvement. Estimates of reliability and cost savings are given for enhancements where possible.

An investigation of impurity centers in semiconductors of variable composition. Part 1: General theory and some applications

A theory of deep point defects imbedded in otherwise perfect semiconductor crystals is developed with the aid of pseudopotentials. The dominant short-range forces engendered by the impurity are sufficiently weakened in all cases where the cancellation theorem of the pseudopotential formalism is operative. Thus, effective-mass-like equations exhibiting local effective potentials derived from nonlocal pseudopotentials are shown to be valid for a large class of defects. A two-band secular determinant for the energy eigenvalues of deep defects is also derived from the set of integral equations which corresponds to the set of differential equations of the effective-mass type. Subsequently, the theory in its simplest form, is applied to the system Al(x)Ga(1-x)As:Se. It is shown that the one-electron donor level of Se within the forbidden gap of Al(x)Ga(1-x)As as a function of the AlAs mole fraction x reaches its maximum of about 300 meV (as measured from the conduction band edge) at the cross-over from the direct to the indirect band-gap at x = 0.44 in agreement with experiments.

Theoretical study of the freezing of polystyrene sphere suspensions

A theoretical study of melting in aqueous suspensions of polystyrene spheres is presented. The Helmholtz free energies of the liquid and solid phase of the suspensions are calculated as functions of sphere number density and electrolyte concentrations. The results tend to show that the freezing curve of such suspensions is that of a conventional classical liquid with repulsive short-range interactions. The interactions can be treated satisfactorily within a slightly modified Debye-Hueckel approximation. The modifications include size correction and a correction for nonlinear screening. The results are confirmed by analogous calculations for the solid phase, and for the line along which liquid and solid free energies are equal.

NASA Deep Space Network Operations Scheduling

The functioning of the Deep Space Network Operations Scheduling, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, CA is reviewed. The primary objectives of the Operations Scheduling are: to schedule the worldwide global allocation of ground communications, tracking facilities, and equipment; and to provide deep space telecommunications for command, tracking, telemetry, and control in support of flight mission operations and tests. Elements of the earth set are Deep Space Stations (DSS) which provide the telecommunications link between the earth and spacecraft; NASA Communications Network; Network Data Processing Area; Network Operations Control Area which provides operational direction to the DSS; Mission Control and Computing systems; and Mission Support areas which provide flight control of the spacecraft. Elements of the space set include mission priorities and requirements which determine the spacecraft queue for allocating network resources. Scheduling is discussed in terms of long-range (3 years), mid-range (8 weeks), and short-range (2 weeks).

Intensified silicon photodiode array detector linearity Application to coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy

The linearity of an intensified silicon photodiode array multichannel detector is studied with coherent anti-Stokes Raman and other similar signals. Studies with diffuse and focused (spherically and cylindrically) signals resolved apparent saturation problems which limit the dynamic range of the detector. In addition, it has been shown that there is no short-range wavelength (473-532-nm) dependence on this saturation. Theoretical explanations for these phenomena are also included.

Study of the effects of implantation on the high Fe-Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al alloys

A theoretical study of the effects of implantation on the corrosion resistance of Fe-Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al alloys was undertaken. The purpose was to elucidate the process by which corrosion scales form on alloy surfaces. The experiments dealt with Ni implanted with Al, exposed to S at high temperatures, and then analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, scanning Auger spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Pair bonding and tight-binding models were developed to study the compositions of the alloys and as a result, a new surface ordering effect was found which may exist in certain real alloys. With these models, the behavior of alloy constituents in the presence of surface concentrations of O or S was also studied. Improvements of the models to take into account the important effects of long- and short-range ordering were considered. The diffusion kinetics of implant profiles at various temperatures were investigated, and it was found that significant non-equilibrium changes in the profiles can take place which may affect the implants' performance in the presence of surface contaminants.

Potential advantages of the spaced antenna method for operational wind profiling, part 3.1B

The problem of very short-range forecasting is twofold. It is necessary to understand the processes that are being forecasted, and data appropriate to the scale of interest has to be generated. Coherent VHF and UHF radars are being used for operational wind profiling and are providing part of the solution to the data-acquisition problem. The Profiler system operated by the Wave Propagation Laboratory at NOAA has already shown great promise. As a result, plans are being considred for expanding the network of radars to cover a larger area of the country. The Profiler uses what is commonly referred to as the Doppler method for measuring winds. Two beams are pointed off-vertical, and the Doppler shift of the echo determines the line-of-sight velocity. The velocity components along the beams are then translated to horizontal wind components. A number of possible advantages of the spaced antennas (SA) method for operational wind profiling are discussed.

Sum rules and static local-field corrections of electron liquids in two and three dimensions

The dielectric functions of electron liquids which take into account short-range electron-electron correlations via the static local-field corrections are examined in the light of the frequency-moment sum rules. The formation is given for degenerate as well as classical electron liquids in arbitrary (d) spatial dimensions, which is suitable for comparison between the two- and three-dimensional cases. By using the virial equations of state it is shown that such dielectric functions cannot satisfy the compressibility sum rule and the third-frequency-moment sum rule simultaneously. In the degenerate case, the plasmon, single-pair, and multipair contributions to the sum rules are analyzed, and the reason for this incompatibility is discussed.

Numerical techniques for large cosmological N-body simulations

Techniques for carrying out large N-body simulations of the gravitational evolution of clustering in the fundamental cube of an infinite periodic universe are described and compared. The accuracy of the forces derived from several commonly used particle mesh schemes is examined, showing how submesh resolution can be achieved by including short-range forces between particles by direct summation techniques. The time integration of the equations of motion is discussed, and the accuracy of the codes for various choices of 'time' variable and time step is tested by considering energy conservation as well as by direct analysis of particle trajectories. Methods for generating initial particle positions and velocities corresponding to a growing mode representation of a specified power spectrum of linear density fluctuations are described. The effects of force resolution are studied and different simulation schemes are compared. An algorithm is implemented for generating initial conditions by varying the number of particles, the initial amplitude of density fluctuations, and the initial peculiar velocity field.

ac susceptibility of thermally annealed and neutron irradiated Cu-Ni alloys

Thermal annealing and high-flux neutron irradiation are used to vary the degree of short-range atomic order in Cu-Ni alloys of composition 40, 50, and 60 at. pct Ni. The magnetic state is measured by ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. It is shown that annealing at 350 C causes significant changes in the susceptibility of all the samples. In the 50 and 60 at. pct Ni samples, the transition is broadened and extended to higher temperatures, while the 40 at. pct Ni sample changes from a paramagnetic system to a weakly ferromagnetic system. The neutron irradiation, in contrast to the thermal treatment, causes the development of smaller size cluster formations. The irradiated 60 at. pct Ni sample exhibits no change in the shape of its susceptibility curve from that of the quenched sample, whereas, the 40 pct alloy is changed, by irradiation, from a paramagnetic system to a spin-glass system.

Numerical weather prediction in low latitudes

Based on the results of a number of numerical prediction experiments, the differential heating between land and ocean is an important and critical factor for investigation of phenomenon such as the onset of monsoons over the Indian subcontinent. The pre-onset period during the month of May shows a rather persistent flow field in the monsoon region. At low levels the circulation exhibits anticyclonic excursions over the Arabian Sea, flowing essentially parallel to the west coast of India from the north. Over the Indian subcontinent the major feature is a shallow heat low over northern India. As the heat sources commence a rapid northwestward movement toward the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, an interesting configuration of the large-scale divergent circulation occurs. A favorable configuration for a rapid exchange of energy from the divergent to the rotational kinetic energy develops. Strong low level monsoonal circulations evolve, attendant with that the onset of monsoon rains occurs. In order to test this observational sequence, a series of short-range numerical prediction experiments were initiated to define the initial heat sources.

Effect of pointing errors and range on performance of dual-pencil-beam scatterometers

Short-range FM scatterometers with single antennas are plagued by interference set up by feedthrough and internal reflections. Dual-antenna systems have much lower internal interference, but there are problems associated with pointing the antennas at the same spot. This note quantifies these problems for Gaussian-shaped beams. The use of antennas with beamwidth ratios of up to 5:1 is shown to improve performance significantly over that obtained with identical beamwidths. For an angle between antenna centers (as viewed from the beam intersection) that is three times the beamwidth of the narrower antenna, the usable spread of range for equal beamwidths is only about 1.85:1, while for an angular ratio of 5, the usable spread of range is greater than 20:1.

A preliminary study of a propeller powered by gas jets issuing from the blade tips

Computations are made of the performance of a propeller designed to develop 56 thrust horsepower at 100 miles per hour. The fuel consumption of the jet-operated propeller would be considerably higher than that of a reciprocating engine and a propeller. The lighter weight of the jet-operated propeller will result in a lighter weight of engine plus fuel for short-range flights. A theoretical analysis is made of a propeller powered by gas jets issuing from the blade tips. In the propeller considered, the air is drawn through the hub and passes through the hollow propeller blades to the tips, where propellers heat the air and expel it through the nozzles in the blade tips. The reaction of the tips rotates the propeller. For long range flights, the weight of the jet-operated propeller with its fuel would be greater than the weight of a reciprocating engine with its propeller and fuel.

Firefighters' Radios

Public Technology Inc. asked for NASA assistance to devise the original firefighter's radio. Good short-range radio communications are essential during a fire to coordinate hose lines, rescue victims, and otherwise increase efficiency. Useful firefighting tool is lower cost, more rugged short range two-way radio. Inductorless electronic circuit replaced inductances and coils in radio circuits with combination of transistors and other low-cost components. Substitution promises reduced circuit size and cost. Enhanced electrical performance made radio more durable and improved maintainability by incorporating modular construction.
