Semiclassical Trans-Series from the Perturbative Hopf-Algebraic Dyson-Schwinger Equations: $\phi$ 3 QFT in 6 Dimensions

We analyze the asymptotically free massless scalar $\phi$ 3 quantum field theory in 6 dimensions, using resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which yield the non-perturbative completion of the divergent perturbative solutions to the Kreimer–Connes Hopf-algebraic Dyson–Schwinger equations for the anomalous dimension. This scalar conformal field theory is asymptotically free and has a real Lipatov instanton. In the Hopf-algebraic approach we find a trans-series having an intricate Borel singularity structure, with three distinct but resonant non-perturbative terms, each repeated in an infinite series. These expansions are in terms of the renormalized coupling. The resonant structure leads to powers of logarithmic terms at higher levels of the trans-series, analogous to logarithmic terms arising from interactions between instantons and anti-instantons, but arising from a purely perturbative formalism rather than from a semi-classical analysis.

First-Principles Approach for Assessing Cold Electron Injection Efficiency of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell: Elucidation of Mechanism of Charge Injection and Recombination

The adequacy of the inclusion of spacer units in the metal-free D-π–A organic dyes pertaining to the augmentation of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) efficiency has been examined through the excited-state simulations of the charge injection and recombination processes at the dye–semiconductor interface. Within the framework of the time-dependent density functional theory, the proposed computational studies focus on the precise evaluation of pivotal factors controlling the rates of photoinduced charge-transfer and energy-transfer processes, including electronic coupling, reorganization energy, and threshold energy barrier in the semiclassical Marcus formalism. The estimation of the fluorescent state appears to be the crucial step while explaining the ultrafast electron injection process and the charge recombination at the Marcus inverted region, as revealed by the obtained results. The retardation of charge recombination is facilitated by the insertion of a thiophene moiety between the π-bridge and the acceptor units. The estimated cold electron injection efficiencies deploying the Onsager–Braun theory, that rely on the computations of cold electron injection lifetime and cold electron lifetime, show a linear correlation with the experimental photovoltaic parameters of the DSSC comprising short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, and power conversion efficiency. The outcomes of the present investigation establish a basis for unraveling the mechanism of intricate dynamical processes upon photoexcitation of the sensitizers, as well as devising plausible routes for functional DSSC materials.

Electric polarization in inhomogeneous crystals

In this work, we derive the charge density up to second order in spatial gradient in inhomogeneous crystals using the semiclassical coarse graining procedure based on the wave packet method. It can be recast as divergence of polarization, whose first-order contribution consists of three parts, a perturbative correction to the original Berry connection expression, a topological part that can be written as an integral of the Chern-Simons 3-form, and a previously-unknown, quadrupolelike contribution. The topological part can be related to the quantized fractional charge carried by a vortex in two-dimensional systems. We then generalize our results to the multiband case and show that the quadrupolelike contribution plays an important role, as it makes the total polarization gauge-independent. Finally, we verify our theory in several model systems.

Driven-dissipative phase transition in a Kerr oscillator: From semiclassical PT symmetry to quantum fluctuations

We study a minimal model that has a driven-dissipative quantum phase transition, namely a Kerr non-linear oscillator subject to driving and dissipation. Using mean-field theory, exact diagonalization, and the Keldysh formalism, we analyze the critical phenomena in this system, showing which aspects can be captured by each approach and how the approaches complement each other. Then critical scaling and finite-size scaling are calculated analytically using the quantum Langevin equation. Furthermore, the physics contained in this simple model is surprisingly rich: it includes a continuous phase transition, Z 2 symmetry breaking, PT symmetry, state squeezing, and critical fluctuations. Due to its simplicity and solvability, this model can serve as a paradigm for exploration of open quantum many-body physics.

Celestial Dual for Maximal Helicity Violating Amplitudes

It is shown that a 2D conformal field theory consisting of a central charge c Liouville theory, a chiral level one, rank N Kac-Moody algebra, and a weight − 3 / 2 free fermion holographically generate 4D maximal helicity violating tree-level scattering amplitudes. The correlators of this 2D conformal field theory give directly the 4D leaf amplitudes associated to a single hyperbolic slice of flat space. The 4D celestial amplitudes arise in a large- N and semiclassical large- c limit, according to the holographic dictionary, as a translationally invariant combination of leaf amplitudes. A step in the demonstration is showing that the semiclassical limit of Liouville correlators are given by contact 3D anti–de Sitter Witten diagrams. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The universal thermodynamic properties of extremely compact objects

An extremely compact object (ECO) is defined as a quantum object without horizon, whose radius is just a small distance s outside its Schwarzschild radius. We show that any ECO of mass M in d + 1 dimensions with s << (M/m p ) 2/(d-2)(d+1) lp must have (at leading order) the same thermodynamic properties—temperature, entropy and radiation rates—as the corresponding semiclassical black hole of mass M. An essential aspect of the argument involves showing that the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equation has no consistent solution in the region just outside the ECO surface, unless this region is filled with radiation at the (appropriately blueshifted) Hawking temperature. In string theory it has been found that black hole microstates are fuzzballs—objects with no horizon—which are expected to have a radius that is only a little larger than the horizon radius. Thus the arguments of this paper provide a nice closure to the fuzzball paradigm: the absence of a horizon removes the information paradox, and the thermodynamic properties of the semiclassical hole are nonetheless recovered to an excellent approximation.

Geometric transport signatures of strained multi-Weyl semimetals

The minimal coupling of strain to Dirac and Weyl semimetals, and its modeling as a pseudogauge field has been extensively studied, resulting in several proposed topological transport signatures. In this work, we study the effects of strain on higher winding number Weyl semimetals and show that strain is not a pseudogauge field for any winding number larger than one. Here we focus on the double-Weyl semimetal as an illustrative example to show that the application of strain splits the higher winding number Weyl nodes and produces an anisotropic Fermi surface. Specifically, the Fermi surface of the double-Weyl semimetal acquires nematic order. By extending chiral kinetic theory for such nematic fields, we determine the effective gauge fields acting on the system and show how strain induces anisotropy and affects the geometry of the semiclassical phase space of the double-Weyl semimetal. Further, the strain-induced deformation of the Weyl nodes results in transport signatures related to the covariant coupling of the strain tensor to the geometric tensor associated with the Weyl nodes giving rise to strain-dependent dissipative corrections to the longitudinal as well as the Hall conductance. Thus, by extension, we show that in multi-Weyl semimetals, strain produces geometric signatures rather than topological signatures. Further, we highlight that the most general way to view strain is as a symmetry-breaking field rather than a pseudogauge field.

Modular flow in JT gravity and entanglement wedge reconstruction

It has been shown in recent works that JT gravity with matter with two boundaries has a type II ∞ algebra on each side. As the bulk spacetime between the two boundaries fluctuates in quantum nature, we can only define the entanglement wedge for each side in a pure algebraic sense. As we take the semiclassical limit, we will have a fixed long wormhole spacetime for a generic partially entangled thermal state (PETS), which is prepared by inserting heavy operators on the Euclidean path integral. Under this limit, with appropriate assumptions of the matter theory, geometric notions of the causal wedge and entanglement wedge emerge in this background. In particular, the causal wedge is manifestly nested in the entanglement wedge. Different PETS are orthogonal to each other, and thus the Hilbert space has a direct sum structure over sub-Hilbert spaces labeled by different Euclidean geometries. The full algebra for both sides is decomposed accordingly. From the algebra viewpoint, the causal wedge is dual to an emergent type III 1 subalgebra, which is generated by boundary light operators. To reconstruct the entanglement wedge, we consider the modular flow in a generic PETS for each boundary. We show that the modular flow acts locally and is the boost transformation around the global RT surface in the semiclassical limit. It follows that we can extend the causal wedge algebra to a larger type III 1 algebra corresponding to the entanglement wedge. Within each sub-Hilbert space, the original type II ∞ reduces to type III 1 .

Pulse shaping in strong-field ionization: Theory and experiments

Intense ultrafast pulses cause dissociative ionization and shaping the pulses may allow control of both electronic and nuclear dynamics that determine ion yields. We report on a combined experimental and theoretical effort to determine how shaped laser pulses affect tunnel ionization, the process that precedes many strong-field phenomena. We carried out experiments on Ar, N 2 , H 2 O, and O 2 using a phase-step function of amplitude 3/4π that is scanned across the spectrum of the pulse. In addition, we changed the amount of chirp in the pulses. Semiclassical as well as fully quantum mechanical time-dependent Schrödinger equation calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental results. We find that precise knowledge of the field parameters in the time and frequency domains is essential to afford reproducible results and quantitative theory and experiment comparisons.

Strings in Ramond-Ramond backgrounds from the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond formalism

We treat RR flux backgrounds of type II string theory in the framework of closed superstring field theory based on the NSR formalism, focusing on two examples: (1) the pp-wave background supported by 5-form flux, and (2) AdS 3 × S 3 × M 4 supported by mixed 3-form fluxes. In both cases, we analyze the classical string field solution perturbatively, and compute the correction to the dispersion relation of string states to quadratic order in the RR flux. In the first example, our result is in a delicate way consistent with that obtained from lightcone quantization of the Green-Schwarz string. In the second example, we will obtain numerically the mass corrections to pulsating type IIB strings in AdS 3 × S 3 × M 4 . Our results, valid at finite AdS radius, agree with previously known answers in the semiclassical limit and in the BMN limit respectively.

Phase transitions from the fifth dimension

We study the cosmological transition of 5D warped compactifications, from the high-temperature black-brane phase to the low-temperature Randall-Sundrum I phase. The transition proceeds via percolation of bubbles of IR-brane nucleating from the black-brane horizon. The violent bubble dynamics can be a powerful source of observable stochastic gravitational waves. While bubble nucleation is non-perturbative in 5D gravity, it is amenable to semiclassical treatment in terms of a “bounce” configuration interpolating between the two phases. We demonstrate how such a bounce configuration can be smooth enough to maintain 5D effective field theory control, and how a simple ansatz for it places a rigorous lower-bound on the transition rate in the thin-wall regime, and gives plausible estimates more generally. When applied to the Hierarchy Problem, the minimal Goldberger-Wise stabilization of the warped throat leads to a slow transition with significant supercooling. We demonstrate that a simple generalization of the Goldberger-Wise potential modifies the IR-brane dynamics so that the transition completes more promptly. Supercooling determines the dilution of any (dark) matter abundances generated before the transition, potentially at odds with data, while the prompter transition resolves such tensions. We discuss the impact of the different possibilities on the strength of the gravitational wave signals. Via AdS/CFT duality the warped transition gives a theoretically tractable holographic description of the 4D Composite Higgs (de)confinement transition. Our generalization of the Goldberger-Wise mechanism is dual to, and concretely models, our earlier proposal in which the composite dynamics is governed by separate UV and IR RG fixed points. The smooth 5D bounce configuration we introduce complements the 4D dilaton/radion dominance derivation presented in our earlier work.

The universality of black hole thermodynamics

The thermodynamic properties of black holes — temperature, entropy and radiation rates — are usually associated with the presence of a horizon. We argue that any extremely compact object (ECO) must have the same thermodynamic properties. Here, quantum fields just outside the surface of an ECO have a large negative Casimir energy similar to the Boulware vacuum of black holes. If the thermal radiation emanating from the ECO does not fill the near-surface region at the local Unruh temperature, then we find that no solution of gravity equations is possible. In string theory, black holes microstates are horizonless quantum objects called fuzzballs that are expected to have a surface ~l p outside r = 2⁢GM; thus the information puzzle is resolved while preserving the semiclassical thermodynamics of black holes.

One-shot holography

Following the work of [J. High Energy Phys. 04, 062 (2021)], we define a generally covariant max-entanglement wedge of a boundary region B, which we conjecture to be the bulk region reconstructible from B. We similarly define a covariant min-entanglement wedge, which we conjecture to be the bulk region that can influence the state on B. We prove that the min- and max-entanglement wedges obey various properties necessary for this conjecture, such as nesting, inclusion of the causal wedge, and a reduction to the usual quantum extremal surface prescription in the appropriate special cases. These proofs rely on one-shot versions of the (restricted) quantum focusing conjecture (QFC) that we conjecture to hold. We argue that these QFCs imply a one-shot generalized second law (GSL) and quantum Bousso bound. Moreover, in a particular semiclassical limit we prove this one-shot GSL directly using algebraic techniques. Finally, in order to derive our results, we extend both the frameworks of one-shot quantum Shannon theory and state-specific reconstruction to finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras, allowing nontrivial centers.

Characterization of the inner edge of the neutron star crust

The poorly known crustal equation of state plays a critical role in many observational phenomena associated with a neutron star. Here using semiclassical Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the possible configurations of the inner edge of the neutron star crust for a variety of baryon densities and proton fractions. Applying the Kirkwood-Buff theory to these two-component systems, we observe how the isothermal compressibility reaches a maximum when isolated nonsymmetric (or quasispherical) clusters are formed in an extremely dilute neutron gas. To determine the neutron fraction, we suggest a geometrical model based on the behavior of the proton-neutron pair correlation function. Accordingly, the equation of state of the inner crust is calculated, illustrating that the nuclear energy in β equilibrium follows a power-law behavior with baryon density. As a possible astrophysical outcome of this study, our results could help refine the mass-radius relation. Finally, our results pave the way towards further investigations of the impact of the proton-neutron pair correlation function on transport properties within the neutron star crust.

Open quantum systems and Schwinger-Keldysh holograms

We initiate the study of open quantum field theories using holographic methods. Specifically, we consider a quantum field theory (the system) coupled to a holographic field theory at finite temperature (the environment). We investigate the effects of integrating out the holographic environment with an aim of obtaining an effective dynamics for the resulting open quantum field theory. The influence functionals which enter this open effective action are determined by the real-time (Schwinger-Keldysh) correlation functions of the holographic thermal environment. To evaluate the latter, we exploit recent developments, wherein the semiclassical gravitational Schwinger-Keldysh saddle geometries were identified as complexified black hole spacetimes. We compute real-time correlation functions using holographic methods in these geometries, and argue that they lead to a sensible open effective quantum dynamics for the system in question, a question that hitherto had been left unanswered. In addition to shedding light on open quantum systems coupled to strongly correlated thermal environments, our results also provide a principled computation of Schwinger-Keldysh observables in gravity and holography. In particular, these influence functionals we compute capture both the dissipative physics of black hole quasi- normal modes, as well as that of the fluctuations encoded in outgoing Hawking quanta, and interactions between them. We obtain results for these observables at leading order in a low frequency and momentum expansion in general dimensions, in addition to determining explicit results for two dimensional holographic CFT environments.

Improved algorithm for dynamical triangulations and simulations of finer lattices

We introduce a new algorithm for the simulation of Euclidean dynamical triangulations that mimics the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, but where all proposed moves are accepted. This rejection-free algorithm allows for the factorization of local and global terms in the action, a condition needed for efficient simulation of theories with global terms, while still maintaining detailed balance. We test our algorithm on the 2 d Ising model, and against results for EDT obtained with standard Metropolis. Our new algorithm allows us to simulate EDT at finer lattice spacings than previously possible, and we find geometries that resemble semiclassical Euclidean de Sitter space in agreement with earlier results at coarser lattices. The agreement between lattice data and the classical de Sitter solution continues to get better as the lattice spacing decreases. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Semiclassics with ’t Hooft flux background for QCD with 2-index quarks

We study quantum chromodynamics including the two-index symmetric or anti-symmetric quark (QCD(Sym/ASym)) on small $\mathbb{R}^2$× T 2 with a suitable magnetic flux. We first discuss the ’t Hooft anomaly of these theories and claim that discrete chiral symmetry should be spontaneously broken completely to satisfy the anomaly matching condition. The T 2 compactification with the magnetic flux preserves the ’t Hooft anomaly, and the 2d effective theory is constrained by the same anomaly of 4d QCD(Sym/ASym). We demonstrate the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry using the dilute gas of center vortices, which confirms the prediction of the ’t Hooft anomaly. We also find that each vacuum maintains the charge conjugation symmetry, and this gives affirmative support for the nonperturbative large-N orientifold equivalence between QCD(Sym/ASym) and $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory.
