A neuro-collision avoidance strategy for robot manipulators

The area of collision avoidance and path planning in robotics has received much attention in the research community. Our study centers on a combination of an artificial neural network paradigm with a motion planning strategy that insures safe motion of the Articulated Two-Link Arm with Scissor Hand System relative to an object. Whenever an obstacle is encountered, the arm attempts to slide along the obstacle surface, thereby avoiding collision by means of the local tangent strategy and its artificial neural network implementation. This combination compensates the inverse kinematics of a robot manipulator. Simulation results indicate that a neuro-collision avoidance strategy can be achieved by means of a learning local tangent method.

Reflexive obstacle avoidance for kinematically-redundant manipulators

Dexterous telerobots incorporating 17 or more degrees of freedom operating under coordinated, sensor-driven computer control will play important roles in future space operations. They will also be used on Earth in assignments like fire fighting, construction and battlefield support. A real time, reflexive obstacle avoidance system, seen as a functional requirement for such massively redundant manipulators, was developed using arm-mounted proximity sensors to control manipulator pose. The project involved a review and analysis of alternative proximity sensor technologies for space applications, the development of a general-purpose algorithm for synthesizing sensor inputs, and the implementation of a prototypical system for demonstration and testing. A 7 degree of freedom Robotics Research K-2107HR manipulator was outfitted with ultrasonic proximity sensors as a testbed, and Robotics Research's standard redundant motion control algorithm was modified such that an object detected by sensor arrays located at the elbow effectively applies a force to the manipulator elbow, normal to the axis. The arm is repelled by objects detected by the sensors, causing the robot to steer around objects in the workspace automatically while continuing to move its tool along the commanded path without interruption. The mathematical approach formulated for synthesizing sensor inputs can be employed for redundant robots of any kinematic configuration.

MAGIK robotics simulation - A window on Space Station Freedom

The MAGIK program is the primary kinematic analysis tool used by the Robotic Systems group at MDSSC. It allows users to conduct man-in-the-loop analyses to evaluate space robotic operations, including reach, clearance, and accessibility. MAGIK can be used to model, specify, simulate, analyze, and modify n-jointed type manipulators and their respective control algorithms. The MAGIK simulation currently implements kinematic models of all robotic devices currently baselined on Space Station Freedom (SSF).

A conjugate gradients/trust regions algorithms for training multilayer perceptrons for nonlinear mapping

This paper addresses the issue of applying a globally convergent optimization algorithm to the training of multilayer perceptrons, a class of Artificial Neural Networks. The multilayer perceptrons are trained towards the solution of two highly nonlinear problems: (1) signal detection in a multi-user communication network, and (2) solving the inverse kinematics for a robotic manipulator. The research is motivated by the fact that a multilayer perceptron is theoretically capable of approximating any nonlinear function to within a specified accuracy. The algorithm that has been employed in this study combines the merits of two well known optimization algorithms, the Conjugate Gradients and the Trust Regions Algorithms. The performance is compared to a widely used algorithm, the Backpropagation Algorithm, that is basically a gradient-based algorithm, and hence, slow in converging. The performances of the two algorithms are compared with the convergence rate. Furthermore, in the case of the signal detection problem, performances are also benchmarked by the decision boundaries drawn as well as the probability of error obtained in either case.

Nonlinear functional approximation with networks using adaptive neurons

A novel mathematical framework for the rapid learning of nonlinear mappings and topological transformations is presented. It is based on allowing the neuron's parameters to adapt as a function of learning. This fully recurrent adaptive neuron model (ANM) has been successfully applied to complex nonlinear function approximation problems such as the highly degenerate inverse kinematics problem in robotics.

Adaptive Neuron Model: An architecture for the rapid learning of nonlinear topological transformations

A method for the rapid learning of nonlinear mappings and topological transformations using a dynamically reconfigurable artificial neural network is presented. This fully-recurrent Adaptive Neuron Model (ANM) network was applied to the highly degenerate inverse kinematics problem in robotics, and its performance evaluation is bench-marked. Once trained, the resulting neuromorphic architecture was implemented in custom analog neural network hardware and the parameters capturing the functional transformation downloaded onto the system. This neuroprocessor, capable of 10(exp 9) ops/sec, was interfaced directly to a three degree of freedom Heathkit robotic manipulator. Calculation of the hardware feed-forward pass for this mapping was benchmarked at approximately 10 microsec.

Fusing Image Data for Calculating Position of an Object

A computer program has been written for use in maintaining the calibration, with respect to the positions of imaged objects, of a stereoscopic pair of cameras on each of the Mars Explorer Rovers Spirit and Opportunity. The program identifies and locates a known object in the images. The object in question is part of a Moessbauer spectrometer located at the tip of a robot arm, the kinematics of which are known. In the program, the images are processed through a module that extracts edges, combines the edges into line segments, and then derives ellipse centroids from the line segments. The images are also processed by a feature-extraction algorithm that performs a wavelet analysis, then performs a pattern-recognition operation in the wavelet-coefficient space to determine matches to a texture feature measure derived from the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal coefficients. The centroids from the ellipse finder and the wavelet feature matcher are then fused to determine co-location. In the event that a match is found, the centroid (or centroids if multiple matches are present) is reported. If no match is found, the process reports the results of the analyses for further examination by human experts.

A novel design for a hybrid space manipulator

Described are the structural design, kinematics, and characteristics of a robot manipulator for space applications and use as an articulate and powerful space shuttle manipulator. Hybrid manipulators are parallel-serial connection robots that give rise to a multitude of highly precise robot manipulators. These manipulators are modular and can be extended by additional modules over large distances. Every module has a hemispherical work space and collective modules give rise to highly dexterous symmetrical work space. Some basic designs and kinematic structures of these robot manipulators are discussed, the associated direct and inverse kinematics formulations are presented, and solutions to the inverse kinematic problem are obtained explicitly and elaborated upon. These robot manipulators are shown to have a strength-to-weight ratio that is many times larger than the value that is currently available with industrial or research manipulators. This is due to the fact that these hybrid manipulators are stress-compensated and have an ultralight weight, yet, they are extremely stiff due to the fact that force distribution in their structure is mostly axial. Actuation is prismatic and can be provided by ball screws for maximum precision.

Adaptive impedance control of redundant manipulators

A scheme for controlling the mechanical impedance of the end-effector of a kinematically redundant manipulator is presented. The proposed control system consists of two subsystems: an adaptive impedance controller which generates the Cartesian-space control input F (is a member of Rm) required to provide the desired end-effector impedance characteristics, and an algorithm that maps this control input to the joint torque T (is a member of Rn). The F to T map is constructed so that the robot redundancy is utilized to improve either the kinematic or dynamic performance of the robot. The impedance controller does not require knowledge of the complex robot dynamic model or parameter values for the robot, the payload, or the environment, and is implemented without calculation of the robot inverse kinematic transformation. As a result, the scheme is very general and is computationally efficient for on-line implementation.
