UAM Airspace Research Roadmap - Rev. 1.2

The UAM Airspace research roadmap is being developed as a new System Engineering methodology leveraging Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) capabilities to help organize, integrate, and communicate NASA's UAM airspace research, with the goal of evolving UAM airspace to UML-4. It provides a basis for prioritizing and coordinating research efforts, and for integrating results that build towards NASA’s research goals. Version 1.2 is a development version of the roadmap, shared publicly to serve as a focal point for discussion and feedback leading to a future baselined version (v2.0). This version supersedes earlier publications, and will be superseded itself by later versions.

System Safety Analysis of Complex NASA Systems with Model-Based Engineering (REV B)

The emergence of model-based engineering is transforming design and analysis methodologies. A recognized benefit of model-based engineering is the existence of a “single source of truth” about the system that becomes the authoritative source of data and information for designers, analysts, and developers. This promotes consistency and efficiency as the design emerges and can be used to further optimize the design. Integrating System Safety Engineers to the “single source of truth” will ensure that the outputs of their assessments and analyses are relevant to the design as it evolves. Use of an integrated system model enables near immediate evaluation of a design change as well as development of operational processes for risk assessment and communication. Such models can enable efficient and timely analysis of system hazards (e.g., hazard fault tree analysis and procedure simulations) and produce complete, accurate, and more consistent products (e.g., hazard reports and safety requirement evaluations). Therefore, an agency-sponsored team at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) recently completed a System Safety Study of modeling and testing capabilities as part of a Model-Based Safety and Mission Assurance Initiative (MBSMAI). Using an existing model developed for reliability analyses, GSFC modeling and system safety experts performed system safety analysis/modeling and produced safety products. The team evaluated model-based feasibility to support System Safety Engineering, developed safety analysis modeling processes, and identified tool capability advancement/development needs. These study results indicate model-based engineering is valid and useable for System Safety Engineering for NASA if adequate modeling processes and environment are established.

UAM Airspace Research Roadmap - Rev. 2.0

Version 2.0 is a baseline version of the roadmap, shared publicly to serve as a focal point for discussion and feedback. This version supersedes earlier publications, and will be superseded itself by later versions.

GDE-55115 Rev 1 Dome Scheduling Application

This document describes how a reactor developer applies for time in the Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) facility. It also describes how applications are evaluated to develop the annual and outyear DOME schedule. The application process assumes that testing in DOME is funded by the applicant, and may be superseded by government-funded projects to accommodate government priorities.

ECAR-6332 Rev 3 RELAP5-3D Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis of MARVEL Microreactor - Final Design

This document reports the thermal hydraulic analyses results for the MARVEL microreactor, final design, including dry criticality, normal operation, operational transients and a set of very-low probability transients caused by accident conditions. The ultimate scope of this document is to demonstrate the MARVEL microreactor thermal hydraulic performances and its inherent safety. First, the list of the operational and accidental transients with the corresponding acceptance criteria are recalled. Then, details of the final design, the key input parameters, the assumptions, and the methodology used for performing the deterministic safety analyses are presented. Finally, the analyses results are provided, demonstrating the satisfaction of the corresponding acceptance criteria.

SPC-70791 Rev 0 MARVEL Inert Gas Subsystem, Secondary Coolant Management Subsystem, and Secondary Coolant Cover Gas Subsystem Tubing and Valve Specification

This specification covers the requirements and details for the selection, testing, cleaning, marking, shipping, inspection and installation (including welding) of the Inert Gas Subsystem, Secondary Coolant Management Subsystem, and Secondary Cover Gas Management Subsystem from the Valve Panel up to the classification division, the patch panel of the upper confinement. Including NaK, argon, eutectic gallium indium tin (eGaInSn), and helium fill tubing, valves, and hangers. These systems consist of the necessary straight lengths, elbows, reducers, fittings, tube connections, instrument taps, and valves called for by applicable drawings. All components shall be procured as ASME Section III Class 2 unless otherwise modified hereinafter. Pressure relief valves have been sized to prevent overpressure in the event there is full regulator flow. This is documented in ECAR-7365.

ECAR-6440 Rev 2 MARVEL Hazard Evaluation

This hazard evaluation supports the Microreactor Applications Research, Validation, and Evaluation (MARVEL) Project’s design effort and the development of the preliminary documented safety analysis (PDSA) (addendum to safety analysis report [SAR]-420, “Transient Reactor Test [TREAT] Facility FSAR”) (SAR-420-ADD-1). The hazard evaluation process for the MARVEL project for compliance with the requirements in 10 CFR 830, “Nuclear Safety Management,” follows a process similar to the Licensing Modernization Project (LMP) as outlined in Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI)-18-04, “Risk-Informed Performance-Based Guidance for Non-Light Water Reactor Licensing Basis Development,” and supporting documents. The LMP process is adapted to fit Department of Energy (DOE) reactor regulatory requirements as applicable and appropriate using a graded approach based on the MARVEL microreactor design. This approach provides reasonable assurance of meeting the requirements of 10 CFR 830 for protection of the public, workers, and environment.

ECAR-5127 Rev 1 Evaluation of the MARVEL Reactor Inhalation Dose Consequences

The following dose consequence analysis is performed to support the preliminary Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation Project (MARVEL) design effort. The purpose of the MARVEL project is to develop a nuclear microreactor applications test bed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to perform research and development on various operational features of microreactors to ultimately improve integration of microreactors to end-user applications. The MARVEL concept is a 100 kilowatt (kW) thermal (kWth) and approximately 20-kW electric (kWe) generating microreactor. The MARVEL system will be located in the INL TREAT facility in the north high-bay equipment pit. This ECAR considers the bounding release fractions of the MARVEL reactor concept and documents the dose consequences to the public and collocated worker.

SPC-71145 Rev 0 MARVEL Process Heat Extraction System Conceptual Design

The Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) reactor will offer experimental capabilities that are not currently available at DOE’s national laboratories. The MARVEL reactor is a microreactor which uses eutectic sodium-potassium alloy (NaK) as a primary coolant. The primary coolant is circulated through four primary loops by natural convection of the coolant. In each loop is a closed well which will accommodate an intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) for extracting heat from the loop. These wells will be referred to in this specification as the “IHX wells”. It is intended for the IHX containment to also be filled with NaK. The MARVEL design team is currently looking for alternative means of extracting heat from these wells to be utilized in downstream applications. This Heat Utilization System (HUS) will enable MARVEL operations including the ability to test, demonstrate, and address issues related to installation, startup, and operations. In addition, it will allow down-stream utilization of process heat for various uses. Depending on the methodology used, the interface between the secondary coolant and the HUS is the Process Heat Extraction System (PHES) and is the subject of this specification.
