1977 Baltimore Travel Survey

The Baltimore Travel Dataset—conducted by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the University of California, Berkeley—is a detailed survey of demographic characteristics and travel patterns for 967 households in Baltimore, Maryland. The survey was conducted in May and June of 1977. The original goal of the survey was to collect an “ideal” dataset for disaggregate travel demand analysis.

2001 Household Travel Survey: Baltimore Region Analysis

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council conducted the Baltimore Regional Household Travel Survey to collect demographic and travel features. The travel data mainly focus on weekday travel, collecting 27,363 one-day travel itineraries from 3,131 Baltimore-region households in June 2001. The council also sampled a smaller survey of 325 households to obtain weekend travel behavior.

1991 Boston Household Travel Survey

The Central Transportation Planning Staff conducted a household travel survey in 1991, featuring demographic, socioeconomic, and travel features of 2,347 households, generating 39,372 weekday trips. The survey took the form of an activity-based travel diary that each subject household filled out for one weekday. The data was used to estimate new models for trip generation, automobile ownership, trip distribution, and mode choice.

2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey

The 2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey, conducted under the auspices of the California Department of Transportation, was conducted between October 2000 and December 2001 among households located in each of California's 58 counties. The purpose of the study was to update the statewide database of household socioeconomic and travel information and helped to refine travel estimates, models, and forecasts throughout California. The survey was an essential element in determining statewide and regional travel patterns. A total of 17,040 households participated in the survey, contributing household socioeconomic and travel data. Travel variables collected include trip times, mode, activity at location, origin and destination, and vehicle occupancy, among other travel-related data from 134,173 trips. Residents completed diary records of their daily travel over a 24-hour (weekday) or 48-hour period (Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday pair).

2002 Champaign-Urbana Urbanized Area Transportation Study

This travel survey, conducted by Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, collected daily weekday travel data from 395 urbanized-area households—accounting for every individual 12 years old or older—in the Champaign-Urbana-Savoy region. The information gathered from the survey was used to forecast future transportation demand and update the Champaign Urbana Urbanized Area Transportation Study Long Range Transportation Plan 2035. Of the 395 households recruited for the study, 362 completed their travel logs. The household travel survey was completed during the summer and fall of 2002, and it was the first large-scale attempt at collecting single-weekday travel data in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy.

1995 OKI Household Activity and Travel Report Survey

The OKI Household Activity and Travel Report Survey 1995, conducted by Market Opinion Research, gathered household activity and travel data from 3,000 households within the OKI region (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana Council of Governments' service area). The region covers over 2,615 square miles and is home to 697,468 households (over 1.75 million people). The primary purpose of this study was to provide OKI with a new database of travel patterns and behavior to assist in updating the region's transportation models. Respondents were asked to report their activities for a 24-hour period from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on an assigned activity day. The survey included weekday assignments only from October 4, 1995, to November 30, 1995.

1998 North Front Range (NFR) MPO

The North Front Range Travel Survey was a comprehensive study of travel behavior throughout the north front range of Colorado. The primary purpose of the survey was to provide a picture of travel patterns and characteristics of travelers in the Denver region. The survey was part of four primary surveys under the Regional Travel Behavior Inventory—a collaborative effort among the Denver Regional Council of Governments in partnership with the Regional Transportation District, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and the Regional Air Quality Council. The survey, conducted from October to January, provided demographic and household-based trip information for household members age 16 and older from 13,348 households. A 24-hour travel diary was provided to respondents to record their travel.

2007 Midlands Tomorrow Household Travel Survey

The purpose of the Midlands Tomorrow Household Travel Survey, conducted by NuStats, was to obtain demographic characteristics and associated travel behavior data from residents of the Columbia, South Carolina, region in order to support an update to the regional transportation model. In total, 1,000 households participated in the study. A total of 7,609 trips were recorded from participants during a specific 24-hour weekday period. The majority of surveys were obtained March through May of 2007.

1996 Dallas-Fort Worth Travel Survey

The Dallas-Fort Worth Travel Survey encompassed households within the Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area of Dallas-Fort Worth. This includes all or part of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, and Tarrant counties. The survey was conducted by the Applied Management & Planning in agreement with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG). Two main objectives drove the study. The main one was to update the existing data for NCTCOG's regional travel. Secondly, the survey aimed to provide new data elements to upgrade existing models. A total of 9,398 households was recruited for the study. Of these, 3,996 (42.5%) provided complete information. The survey revealed households' travel behavior preferences through a collection of information about household characteristics and travel using a unique "travel as an activity" approach. Respondents were asked to account for all of their time, including both trips and activities, during weekdays from February 19, 1996, to June 30, 1996.

2002 VCMPO Model Calibration and Home-Based Travel Survey

The 2001-2002 Model Calibration and Home-Based Travel Survey was a study conducted in Volusia County, Florida. One of the major purposes of the survey project was to collect information to allow for a better understanding of the travel habits and patterns of residents within Volusia County. The project was jointly funded by the Florida Department of Transportation, Volusia County, and the Volusia County MPO. Demographic and trip data were collected for 2,727 households from February 20, 2002, to February 28, 2002. Respondents were asked to record their travel and activities for a 48-hour period. Detailed information regarding their trips, including mode of transportation, trip purpose, departure and arrival times, and number of passengers, were gathered from 13,408 trips.

1994 SEMCOG Household-Based Person Trip Survey

The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments contracted with the Applied Management & Planning Group to conduct a travel behavior survey of 7,361 households from March 28, 1994, to June 10, 1994. The primary purpose of this study was to provide the council with a new database of travel behavior to assist in updating the region's transportation models. This data collection includes demographic, socioeconomic, travel, and mobile source emissions models for projecting future patterns of development, travel, congestion, and air pollution. Information about household characteristics and travel was collected using a one-day, activity-focused diary and a separate household survey. In an activity diary, respondents recorded 65,535 trips during the assigned the day.

1994 Treasure Coast Travel Characteristics Study

The Treasure Coast Travel Characteristics Study was initiated in January 1995 in order to improve the travel forecasting accuracy of the Florida Standard Urban Transportation Model System for this area. The main objective of the surveys was to establish the socioeconomic and travel characteristics of the Treasure Coast Area of Mart, St. Lucie, and Indian River Counties. A total of 1,531 households participated in the study. The household study was separated into multiple parts: one used phone interviews to collect data and another provided travel logs for study participants to fill out, ranging from one- to three-day logs.

2000 Southeast Florida Regional Travel Characteristics

The Southeast Florida Regional Travel Characteristics Study (Travel 2000) provided the needed observed travel information for developing planning tools for a three-county region of Southeast Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach). Data collection efforts began in December 1998 and were completed in September 1999. Travel logs were collected for 5,168 households, which included all travel by all residents for one day. In addition, approximately 10,000 bus riders were surveyed, and visitors were surveyed at 79 hotels. Trucking information was gathered from 848 commercial establishments using trucks. Workers were surveyed at seven major employment areas in the three counties.

2002 Treasure Valley Transportation Survey

The 2002 Treasure Valley Transportation Survey was conducted in Ada and Canyon counties in southwest Idaho, under contract with the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho. The full study was conducted during September 2002 and October 2002 and entailed the collection of activity and travel information for all household members, regardless of age, during an assigned 24-hour period (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). In addition to providing basic demographic information about each household and its members, the survey documented specific travel characteristics and trips made, including the number of occupants, trip purpose, time of day, and questions specific to mode use. Travel days for the survey were spread across the pilot study (August 8, 2002) and the full study (September 3, 2002-October 31, 2002). In total, 3,488 households were recruited to participate in the study. Of these, 2,582 completed travel diaries (fully completed and passed edit check procedures), and the information was retrieved from all household members.

2001 KIPDA Regional Household Travel Survey

The Kentuckiana Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA) conducted this four-month study from October 2000 through January 2001 to update regional travel demand models. The universe for the survey consisted of households in the five-county Louisville transportation planning study area, including Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana and Bullitt, Jefferson, and Oldham counties in Kentucky. Demographic variables and travel behavior characteristics were collected for 4,433 households in a 24-hour period. Of these, 4,113 were completed with households that were selected at random, and the remaining 320 were completed with representatives. The data from the survey only reflect travel by the selected residents of the five counties listed above and do not account for travel in the region by persons who were not residents of those five counties.

2000 Knoxville Urban Area Household Travel Behavior Survey

This survey, conducted by NuStats, was a comprehensive study of travel behavior in Knox and Blount counties in the Knoxville urban area. The purpose of the survey was to collect weekday travel characteristics of household members (ages five and older) in the counties during a 24-hour timeframe. The data will be used by the Knoxville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and local agencies to update transportation and air quality models and to identify transportation needs in the region. The survey was conducted between November 2000 and February 2001. In total, 2,674 households were recruited to participate in the survey. Of these, 1,538 households reported data from a one-day travel log, totaling 12,631 trips by 3,522 persons. Of all trips originating in the study area, three-fourths were made by persons residing in Knox County.

2008 East Tennessee Household Travel Survey

The 2008 East Tennessee Household Travel Survey, conducted by NuStats, was a comprehensive study of travel behavior in Knox, Blount, Anderson, Jefferson, Loudon, Roane, Sevier, and Union counties. The purpose of the survey was to collect weekday travel characteristics of households in the eight-county region during a 24-hour timeframe. The data will be used by the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization and local agencies to update transportation and air quality models and to identify transportation needs in the region. The survey collected demographic and travel data from a sample of 1,400 households between February and May 2008. In total, 12,012 trips were reported by 3,301 persons.

1970 Home Interview Survey

This study was conducted by Twin Cities Metropolitan Council—Saint Paul, and the database was used to develop mathematical models to predict future regional travel patterns and ultimately develop appropriate regional transportation policies, plans, and programs. The surveys in 1970 did not specifically include walking or bicycling as options in the travel diary; instead, these trips are included in a broad “other” category.
