FY22 Year End Report of Delivery Environments Predictive Capabilities Use in Analysis of SRP Programs

As was established in a previous milestone report for FY20, W-13 continues to be tasked with analyses that require knowledge of in-flight environments and require an in-house capability to generate such environments. To this end, FY21 work included obtaining and benchmarking the use of such tools for an in-house capability. With these tools available for analysis tasks, FY22 work has been to continue the development of analysis for Responsive Development Experiment (ReDX) flights in the Stockpile Responsiveness Program (SRP). While no flights were executed in FY22 that leveraged internal flight analysis., this report shows that both CBAERO and TAOS were used in W-13 under the Delivery Environments Program for the FY22 milestone in order to predict the flight environments of ReDX flight 3 and determine preliminary environments of the Calypso flight vehicle which includes a deployable heat shield.

FY23 Year End Report of Delivery Environments Predictive Capabilities Use in Analysis of SRP Programs

As was established in a previous milestone report for FY20, W-13 continues to be tasked with analyses that require knowledge of in-flight environments and require an in-house capability to generate such environments. To this end, FY21 work included obtaining and benchmarking the use of such tools for an in-house capability. With these tools available for analysis tasks, ongoing work has been to continue the development of analysis capabilities and understanding while specifically using the tools for Responsive Development Experiment (ReDX) flights in the Stockpile Responsiveness Program (SRP). In FY23, design and analysis of ReDX flight 3A continued while targeting an FY24 launch date. This report shows that a variety of vehicle characterization and flight analysis tools were used in W-13, under the Delivery Environments Program. This work was performed in order to aid in vehicle design by predicting flight stability, trajectory, and induced environments while adapting to a series of changing internal payload configurations that resulted in significant changes to mass properties and associated flight stability.

The data in this report consists of (1) a table of the ATR power history and distribution, (2) a listing of the calculated thermal and fast neutron fluence rates, and (3) plots of calculated both the thermal and fast neutron fluence rates. The fluence rates reported are for the average power levels given in the table of power history and distribution. During the irradiation of Cycle 152A, the RML performed additional flux measurements to assess core reconfiguration issues. Measurements using cadmium covered as well as bare neutron monitors in the Southwest, Southeast, and H positions of the Center lobe were performed to determine the division in neutron energy between epithermal and thermal neutrons. This is defined as the resonance correction defined in this report. It is used to quantify both thermal and fast neutron flux. For more information please refer to letter, “RADIATION MEASUREMENTS LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS OF IN CORE ATR PHYSICS TESTING DURING CYCLE 152A” dated January 24, 2013, to Casey Stengel from C. C. Jensen. The measured values documented in RML Procedure, “ACMM-3600, Flux Monitoring,” will be used indefinitely until further measurements supersede the current values.

Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program: FY 2023 Completed Projects Report

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) largest multiprogram science, technology, and energy laboratory. It possesses distinctive capabilities in a variety of fields, such as neutron science, computing, advanced materials, and nuclear science and technology. Using these capabilities, ORNL conducts basic and applied research and development (R&D) to support DOE’s overarching mission “to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.” As a national resource, ORNL also applies its capabilities and skills to the specific needs of other federal agencies and customers through the DOE Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) Program. Information about the laboratory and its programs is available on the ORNL website. The Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Program at ORNL operates under the authority of the DOE Order 413.2C, Laboratory Directed Research and Development, which establishes DOE’s requirements for the program while providing the laboratory director broad flexibility for program implementation. The LDRD Program funds are obtained through a charge to all laboratory programs. Although it represents a relatively small portion of the overall research budget, the LDRD Program plays an essential role in maintaining the laboratory’s ability to respond to national needs. The program allows ORNL to improve its distinctive capabilities and to enhance its ability to conduct cutting-edge R&D. This report provides an overview of the LDRD Program at ORNL in FY 2023 and contains summaries of all the LDRD research projects that concluded between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023.
