Accomplishments of the NASA Johnson Space Center portion of the soil moisture project in fiscal year 1981

The NASA/JSC ground scatterometer system was used in a row structure and row direction effects experiment to understand these effects on radar remote sensing of soil moisture. Also, a modification of the scatterometer system was begun and is continuing, to allow cross-polarization experiments to be conducted in fiscal years 1982 and 1983. Preprocessing of the 1978 agricultural soil moisture experiment (ASME) data was completed. Preparations for analysis of the ASME data is fiscal year 1982 were completed. A radar image simulation procedure developed by the University of Kansas is being improved. Profile soil moisture model outputs were compared quantitatively for the same soil and climate conditions. A new model was developed and tested to predict the soil moisture characteristic (water tension versus volumetric soil moisture content) from particle-size distribution and bulk density data. Relationships between surface-zone soil moisture, surface flux, and subsurface moisture conditions are being studied as well as the ways in which measured soil moisture (as obtained from remote sensing) can be used for agricultural applications.

Abundancies of Ni, Cr, CO and major elements in the silicate portion of the Moon: Constraints from primary lunar magmas

The lunar volcanic glasses are samples of primary magnas derived by partial melting of the Moon mantle. The twenty-seven varieties of glass define three linear arrays having nearly constant Mg/Si ratios. The low-Ti magmas in each array approach the chondritic Ti/Al ratio. In addition, the Ca/Al ration in these low-Ti magmas trends toward the chrondritid value as one proceeds from array 1 through array 3. Using the chemistries of these primary magmas, as well as the assumption that the Moon possesses chondritic Ca/Al/Ti/Mg ratios, the silicate composition of the Moon has been estimated. The implications of these results are discussed.

Non-local Origin of a Substantial Portion of the Soft X-ray Background

Comparison of the SAS-3 soft X-ray sky survey with the 21-cm neutral hydrogen survey confirms the well-known anticorrelation between the counting rates in the C-band (0.10-0.28 keV) and the column density of neutral hydrogen, and demonstrates that this anticorrelation is significant on all angular scales ranging from that of the general trend from the galactic equator to the poles down to the angular resolution of the detector (2.07 FWHM). Numerous instances of what appear to be soft X-ray shadows of nearly (100-300 pc) 21-cm features, and several bright X-ray regions coincident with holes in the interstellar medium are included in this general correlation. The final set of selected data has an exposure of 2.2 x 10 to the 4th power/sq cm s sr, a sky coverage of 80%, and is free of spurious effects due to charged particles and solar radiations. The validity of the two-component model of the X-ray background, introduced by Davidsen et al. (1977) is examined. In this model the C-band intensity in a given direction is represented as a sum of a constant term, I sub 1, due to unattenuated emission from a local hot bubble in which the solar system is immersed, and a term, I sub 2 exp (N sub H sub th) , due to emission from a diffuse source beyond the neutral hydrogen 2.g., the galactic corona).

Small-Portion Water Dispenser

Pressure regulated and flow timed to control amount dispensed. Dispenser provides measured amount of water for reconstituting dehydrated foods and beverages. Dispenser holds food or beverage package while being filled with either cold or room-temperature water. Other uses might include dispensing of fluids or medicine. Pressure regulator in dispenser reduces varying pressure of water supply to constant pressure. Electronic timer stops flow after predetermined length of time. Timed flow at regulated pressure ensures controlled volume of water dispensed.

The dehydration, rehydration and tectonic setting of greenstone belts in a portion of the northern Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa

High-grade gneiss terranes and low-grade granite-greenstone terranes are well known in several Archaean domains. The geological relationship between these different crustal regions, however, is still controversial. One school of thought favors fundamental genetic differences between high-grade and low-grade terranes while others argue for a depth-controlled crustal evolution. The detailed examination of well-exposed Archaean terranes at different metamorphic grades, therefore, is not only an important source of information about the crustal levels exposed, but also is critical to the understanding of the possible tectonic and metamorphic evolution of greenstone belts with time. Three South African greenstone belts are compared.

A preliminary assessment of ground-based, infrared spectra of Spacelab 2 during nighttime portions of its orbit

The Space Shuttle Challenger was observed spectroscopically in two passes over Maui during the Spacelab 2 mission. Through most of one of the passes strong bands centered at 1.52 and 1.69 microns, tentatively identified as OH bands, were detected. The average luminosity of the Shuttle in the 1.45 to 1.75 micron range was roughly equal to that of a star of magnitude +5.5. The luminosity was much lower during part of the pass. Spectra from 0.65 to 2.4 microns were obtained during the second pass. These showed that most of the nonthermal emission is in the 1.2 to 2.2 micron range as would be expected for vibrationally excited OH.

Abundances of cobalt, nickel, and volatiles in the silicate portion of the moon

The trace abundances of Ni have been determined in 20 high-Mg magmas produced by partial melting of the lunar mantle. Associated with the eruption of the high-Mg magmas was the release of indigenous volatile elements. Data suggest that these volatiles were derived from primordial blocks of debris from the outer solar system that became entrained in the circumterrestrial accretion disk. The survival of these reservoirs within the lunar interior places constraints on the moon's thermal history.

SIMS chemical analysis of extended impact features from the trailing edge portion of experiment AO187-2

One hundred capture cells from the trailing edge, which had lost their cover foils during flight, were optically scanned for extended impact features caused by high velocity projectiles impinging on the cells while the foils were still intact. Of the 53 candidates, 24 impacts were analyzed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy for the chemical composition of the deposits. Projectile material was found in all impacts, and at least 75 percent of them appear to be caused by interplanetary dust particles. Elemental ratios are fractionated, with refractory elements enriched in the impacts relative to interplanetary dust particles collected in the stratosphere. Although this could be due to systematic differences in the compositions, a more likely explanation is volatility fractionation during the impact process.

Research in cosmic and gamma ray astrophysics: Cosmic physics portion

Research in particle astrophysics at the Space Radiation Laboratory (SRL) of the California Institute of Technology is supported under NASA Grant NAGW-1919. A three-year proposal for continuation of support was submitted a year ago and put into effect 1 October 1992. This report is the combined progress report and continuation application called for under the Federal Demonstration Project. Gamma-ray Astrophysics at SRL is separately supported under NAGW-1919 and will be separately summarized and proposed. This report will document progress and plans for our particle spectroscopy activities and for related data analysis, calibration, and community service activities. A bibliography and a budget will be attached as appendices. The Caltech SRL research program includes a heavy emphasis on elemental and isotopic spectroscopy of energetic particles in the cosmic radiation; in solar, interplanetary, and anomalous 'cosmic' radiation; and in planetary magnetospheres as discussed.

The evolution of cloud-to-ground lightning within a portion of the 10-11 June 1985 squall line

The character of cloud-to-ground lightning is examined during the life cycle of a distinct mesoscale segment of the 10-11 June 1985 mesoscale convective system (MCS). Three phases of lightning activity are identified and related to both the radar-observed structure of the convection and to the severe weather produced by the MCS. Positive strikes to ground are dominant when the MCS is first developing. Negative strikes then dominate during a period of intense leading-line convective activity with high storm tops. Finally, a period of relatively frequent positive strikes within the trailing stratiform region occurs during the demise of the MCS. This last phase begins after the vertical extent of the leading convective line decreases rapidly and markedly, with moderate intensity echoes (i.e., 30-40 dBZ) occurring mostly below the freezing level. The first period of frequent positive flashes results from the lightning associated with a single severe thunderstorm in southwest Kansas; however, a second severe storm occurs nearby and produces mainly negative strikes. An extended period of strong surface winds does not appear to have any direct relationship with the observed character of the lightning activity.

Determination of Spectral Line Parameters in Selected Portions of the Infrared Spectrum of Water Vapor

Pressure broadening and pressure-induced shift coefficients due to water and nitrogen have been determined for water vapor transitions in the CO2 region of interest to Project HALOE. The temperature dependences of the widths and shifts have also been determined for selected transitions in this region. Results have been compared with values available in the literature. The line parameters have been obtained from the analysis of room temperature recordings of the spectrum of pure water and recordings of the spectra of heated water/nitrogen mixtures. The recordings of the water vapor spectrum were obtained with Fourier Transform Spectrometers at Kitt Peak and at the Justus-Liebig-Universitat Giessen. Up to eighteen spectra have been fitted simultaneously with a multispectrum nonlinear least-squares fitting technique developed by Dr. D. Chris Benner and colleagues.
