The lateral neutralization of ion beams is treated by standard mathematical methods for first order, nonlinear partial differential equations. A closed form analytical solution is derived for the transient lateral beam neutralization for electron injection by means of a von Mises transformation. A nonlinear theory of the longitudinal ion beam neutralization is developed using the von Mises transformation. By means of the Lenard-Balescu equation, the intercomponent momentum transfer between stable, collisionless electron and ion components is calculated.
An analysis of the sputtering of metal surfaces and grids by ions of medium energies is given and it is shown that an exact, nonlinear, hyperbolic wave equation for the temperature field describes the transient transport of heat in metals. Quantum statistical and perturbation theoretical analysis of surface sputtering by low energy ions are used to develop the same expression for the sputtering rate. A transport model is formulated for the deposition of sputtered atoms on system components. Theoretical efforts in determining the potential distribution and the particle velocity distributions in low pressure discharges are briefly discussed.

The final report for NAGW-1657 (SwRI Project 15-2783) is presented. Several distinctly different areas of research are discussed: (1) studies of the thermal structure of polar outflows; (2) Prognoz-8 data analysis; and (3) the Ulysses Jupiter encounter.
Progress during the reporting period is presented. Several distinctly different areas of research are presently being pursued: (1) studies of the thermal structure of polar outflows; (2) Prognoz data analysis; and (3) Ulysses Jupiter encounter.
A number of visualization techniques are discussed in a laboratory experiment designed to study phenomena that occur in space. Visualization tools are used to design the apparatus, collect data, and make one-, two-, and three-dimensional plots of the results. These tools are an indispensable part of the experiment because the data sets are hundreds of megabytes in size and rapid turnaround is required.
Published electron impact cross section data on halogens Cl2, F2, and halogen containing compounds such as Cx Fy, HCl, Cx Cly Fz are reviewed and critically evaluated based on the information provided by various researchers. The present work reports data on electron impact excitation, ionization, dissociation, electron attachment, electron detachment, and photo detachment. Elastic scattering cross sections and data on bulk properties such as diffusion coefficients in various background gases are also evaluated. Since some of the cross sectional data is derived from indirect measurements such as drift velocity, care has been taken to reconcile the differences among the reported data with due attention to the measurement technique. In conclusion, the processes with no or very limited amount of data and questionable set of data are identified and recommendation for further research direction is made.

We report that fabrication of parts with high mechanical properties heavily depend on the quality of powder deployed in the fabrication process. Copper powder in three different powder types were spheroidized using radio-frequency inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spheroidization process (TekSphero-15 system). The characterized powders include virgin powder as purchased from the powder manufacturer, powder used in electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) process, and reconditioned powder, which was used powder that underwent an oxygen-reduction treatment. The goal of spheroidizing these powder types was to evaluate the change in powder morphology, the possibility of enhancing the powder properties back to their as-received conditions, and assess oxygen reduction of the powder lots given their initial oxygen contents. Also, to investigate the impact of re-spheroidization on powder properties, the second round of spheroidization was performed on the already used-spheroidized powder. The impact of powder type on powder sphericity and particle size distribution was evaluated using the image analysis of scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs and laser diffraction, respectively. The spheroidized powder showed higher sphericity and more uniform particle size distribution overall. Depending on the powder collection bin, second round of spheroidization affected the powder sphericity differently. The possibility of deploying the plasma spheroidization process as an alternative oxygen-reduction technique was also investigated through tracking the powders’ oxygen content using inert gas fusion method before and after the spheroidization. The plasma spheroidized powder showed less oxygen content than the hydrogen-treated powder. The second round of spheroidization caused no change in oxygen content. The correlation between oxygen-reduction and created cracks was discussed and compared between plasma spheroidization and hydrogen-treatment. The plasma spheroidization process created a powder with higher sphericity, uniform particle size, and less oxygen content.
