The Preparation for and Execution of Engineering Operations for the Mars Curiosity Rover Mission

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover mission is the most complex and scientifically packed rover that has ever been operated on the surface of Mars. The preparation leading up to the surface mission involved various tests, contingency planning and integration of plans between various teams and scientists for determining how operation of the spacecraft (s/c) would be facilitated. In addition, a focused set of initial set of health checks needed to be defined and created in order to ensure successful operation of rover subsystems before embarking on a two year science journey. This paper will define the role and responsibilities of the Engineering Operations team, the process involved in preparing the team for rover surface operations, the predefined engineering activities performed during the early portion of the mission, and the evaluation process used for initial and day to day spacecraft operational assessment.

A Review of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Technology in Power Line Inspection

The electric power industry is one of the heaviest adopters of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technology, utilizing their versatility to enhance power line maintenance programs. For reliable power grids, routine maintenance operations and rapid repair operations are required across substantial geographical distances. Both maintenance and repair decisions are driven by assessment operations, such as inspections of mechanical structures with visible-band sensors, inspections for the presence of high voltage coronas and hot spots with multispectral sensors, and surveying of equipment and adjacent features (particularly vegetation) with photogrammetric and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors. Assessment was historically accomplished with manned helicopter flights or foot patrols. Recently, this critical economic segment harnessed advances in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)technology to accomplish assessment tasks with faster results, lower cost, and higher levels of safety than historical methods. Adoption of UAVs in high-voltage electric power transmission activities is well underway. Adoption of UAVs for low voltage distribution activities is still emerging, with the important exception of post-storm damage assessment following major hurricanes (Harvey and Maria in 2017 and Michael in 2018). This report reviews the broad UAS adoption in high-voltage electric power transmission operations and early attempts at adoption in distribution operations. The ability to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) may increase the advantages of UAV inspection over former options, and in the United States, regulators have approved two pilot projects to demonstrate BVLOS methods and their benefits in operating and maintaining the power grid.

Environmental projects, volume 11. Environmental assessment: Addition to operations building, Mars site

An Environmental Assessment was performed of the proposed addition to building G-86 at the Mars Site, which will provide space for new electronic equipment to consolidate the Deep Space Network (DSN) support facilities from other Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex (GDSCC) sites at the Mars Site, and will include a fifth telemetry and command group with its associated link monitor, control processor, and operator consoles. The addition of these facilities will increase the capability of the DSN to support future sophisticated NASA spacecraft missions such as the International Solar and Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Program. The planned construction of this building addition requires an Environmental Assessment (EA) document that records the existing environmental conditions at the Mars Site, that analyzes the environmental effects that possibly could be expected from the construction and use of the new building addition, and that recommends measures to be taken to mitigate any possible deleterious environmental effects.

Runway Independent Aircraft Extremely Short Takeoff and Landing

This report Summarizes the work done is support of NASA/Ames Runway Independent Aircraft Research during the summer of 2003. This work centered on the tasks laid out by the Statement of Work, which was to: Identify and assess operational scenarios including airport air and ground operations and how RIA operations would interface; 2) Identify critical technologies and create a list of technologies that might be pushed to provide a quantum jump in operating economy, reliability, and safety should sufficient finding be available; 3) Create public domain powered high lift methodologies; and 4) Identify and assess vehicle concepts that provide innovative approaches to RIA operations. All these tasks were accomplished, with certain areas needing additional exploration in future grant work. Three designs were analyzed to provide strawman configurations for the RIA operations. All three aircraft carried 60 passengers, with a stage length of 1,000 nautical miles. They were capable of operating with a balanced field length of 2000 feet or less. Three different technology approaches were explored. The first, the Model 115, was a mid-wing USB design, developed as a near-term, low risk concept. The second aircraft, the EMAX, used a directed thrust system, was a far-term, high-risk approach. The third configuration was the Model 114, whose development began in summer 2002. In addition, further research was conducted on issues related to STOL operations, such as noise concerns, SNI operations, and other areas of interest.

Risk-Assessment for Equipment Operating on the Lunar Surface

Particle-size distribution of lunar dust simulant is evaluated using scanning electron spectroscopy in order to consider approaches to evaluating risk to individual mechanical components operating on the lunar surface. Assessing component risk and risk-mitigation during actual operations will require noninvasive continuous data gathering on numerous parameters. Those data sets would best be evaluated using data-mining algorithms to assess risk, and recovery from risk, of individual mechanical components in real-time.

Monitoring Based Commissioning: Step-by-Step Approach to Implementation in Chiller Plants

Chilled water systems consume a significant portion of the energy in manufacturing, and inefficient operation could significantly influence utility bills and the environmental footprint of a facility. One way to ensure long-term energy-efficient plant operation is to ensure that chilled water system equipment, such as chillers, cooling towers, and pumps, are running at their best. Periodic operational assessments help to meet efficiency objectives for cooling plants. However, occasional set point and operational changes resulting from short-term fluctuations cause the plant operation to deviate from optimal. These changes accumulate over time, and operational efficiency deteriorates. Significant energy efficiency improvement potential in chilled water systems can be achieved by operational changes alone. Recent developments in information technology and the industrial internet of things data processing ability have overcome traditional problems and given rise to a new paradigm: monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx). Commissioning platforms and fault detection and diagnostics capabilities have evolved over time and presented more sophisticated abilities to efficiently control process cooling plants. The typical architectures of the MBCx process and a detailed approach to implement the process for chilled water systems are presented. A case study highlighting the energy-and cost-savings potential of MBCx systems is also presented.

Assessment of Uncertainty-Based Screening Volumes for NASA Robotic LEO and GEO Conjunction Risk Assessment

Conjunction Assessment operations require screening assets against the space object catalog by placing a pre-determined spatial volume around each asset and predicting when another object will violate that volume. The selection of the screening volume used for each spacecraft is a trade-off between observing all conjunction events that may pose a potential risk to the primary spacecraft and the ability to analyze those predicted events. If the screening volumes are larger, then more conjunctions can be observed and therefore the probability of a missed detection of a high risk conjunction event is small; however, the amount of data which needs to be analyzed increases. This paper characterizes the sensitivity of screening volume size to capturing typical orbit uncertainties and the expected number of conjunction events observed. These sensitivities are quantified in the form of a trade space that allows for selection of appropriate screen-ing volumes to fit the desired concept of operations, system limitations, and tolerable analyst workloads. This analysis will specifically highlight the screening volume determination and selection process for use in the NASA Conjunction Assessment Risk Analysis process but will also provide a general framework for other Owner / Operators faced with similar decisions.

Operational design factors for NASP derived vehicles

The factors that significantly affect the operability of aerospace planes are identified and considered in terms of the development of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP). The aircraftlike vehicle can be affected by variables related to the structure, propulsion, and mechanical elements of the design. The requirements to control the factors are listed including robustness, fuels and propellants, maintainability, autonomy, and development testing. The details of the requirements indicate critical factors such as the strength-to-weight ratios of the materials, propellant-system components that can withstand 5000 consecutive cycles, and low vehicle-failure probabilities. The NASP program is concluded to require: (1) models for quantitative operational assessments; (2) a modular design for the NASP structure; (3) computer-technology integration; and (4) technologies to support and normalize cryogenic operations.

When ChatGPT Meets Vulnerability Management: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Vulnerability management is a very challenging and time-consuming task. For many organizations, security operators need to learn about the properties of vulnerabilities to prioritize and mitigate them. Due to the lack of automated tools for vulnerability assessment, operators usually manually search for and read related information from sources online. Recent advances in large language models, like ChatGPT, open up an opportunity for time savings and may prompt operators to use these models as vulnerability information sources. In this work, we evaluate the ability of ChatGPT and several of its siblings to accurately answer user questions about vulnerability properties as well as to provide information for how to mitigate a vulnerability. We also explore their summarization capabilities when multiple vulnerability advisory documents are provided. We find that the models perform poorly on information retrieval tasks, but they perform quite well on summarization.

Psychophysiological Monitoring of Aerospace Crew State

As next-generation space exploration missions necessitate increasingly autonomous systems, there is a critical need to better detect and anticipate crewmember interactions with these systems. The success of present and future autonomous technology in exploration spaceflight is ultimately dependent upon safe and efficient interaction with the human operator. Optimal interaction is particularly important for surface missions during highly coordinated extravehicular activity (EVA), which consists of high physical and cognitive demands with limited ground support. Crew functional state may be affected by a number of variables including workload, stress, and motivation. Real-time assessments of crew state that do not require a crewmember’s time and attention to complete will be especially important to assess operational performance and behavioral health during flight. In response to the need for objective, passive assessment of crew state, the aim of this work is to develop an accurate and precise prediction model of human functional state for surface EVA using multi-modal psychophysiological sensing. The psychophysiological monitoring approach relies on extracting a set of features from physiological signals and using these features to classify an operator’s cognitive state. This work aims to compile a non-invasive sensor suite to collect physiological data in real-time. Training data during cognitive and more complex functional tasks will be used to develop a classifier to discriminate high and low cognitive workload crew states. The classifier will then be tested in an operationally relevant EVA simulation to predict cognitive workload over time. Once a crew state is determined, further research into specific countermeasures, such as decision support systems, would be necessary to optimize the automation and improve crew state and operational performance.

Flight evaluation of LORAN-C in the State of Vermont

A flight evaluation of LORAN C as a supplement to existing navigation aids for general aviation aircraft, particularly in mountainous regions of the United States and where VOR coverage is limited was conducted. Flights, initiated in the summer months, extend through four seasons and practically all weather conditions typical of northeastern U.S. operations. Assessment of all the data available indicates that LORAN C signals are suitable as a means of navigation during enroute, terminal and nonprecision approach operations and the performance exceeds the minimum accuracy criteria.

Optical Navigation for the Dawn Mission at Vesta

The Dawn S/C was launched in September 2007 in order to perform remote sensing observations of the asteroids Vesta and Ceres. Dawn entered into orbit about Vesta in July 2011, completed successfully the mission goals, that were carried out in four different science orbits, by August 2012 and has since departed towards asteroid Ceres. An important component of the Dawn navigation was optical navigation, which was performed at almost all mission phases.Optical data types were used in the overall orbit determination process. In addition they were used to determine some key aspects of the asteroid's physical characteristics, such as the rotational axis, shape and surface morphology and gravity terms. In this paper we present an overview of the optical navigation operations at Vesta, the optical navigation planning, image acquisition strategy, data reduction methodology, and the up-to-date post operations assessment. Of particular importance is the extensive use of landmark navigation, which was performed for the first time for real-time support of operations and which comprised the bulk of the optical data processing.

Solar-energy-system performance evaluation: Honeywell OTS 44, Ocmulgee, Georgia

The operation and technical performance of the solar operational test site (OTS 44) are described, based on data collected between April, 1981 and August, 1981. The following topics are discussed: system description, performance assessment, operating energy, energy savings, system maintenance, and conclusions. The solar energy system at OTS 44 is a hydronic heating and cooling system consisting of 5040 square feet of liquid cooled flat plate collectors; a 4000 gallon thermal storage tank; one 25 ton capacity organic Rankine cycle engine assisted water chillers; a forced draft cooling tower; and associated piping, pumps, valves, controls and heat rejection equipment. The solar system has eight basic modes of operation and several combination modes for providing space conditioning and hot water to the building. Data monitored during the 4 months of the operational test period found that the solar system collected 285 MMBtu of thermal energy of the total incident solar energy of 1040 MMBtu and provided 210 MMBtu for cooling and 10 MMBtu for heating and hot water. The net electrical energy saving due to the solar system was approximately 2600 kWh(e), and fossil energy saving was about 20 million Btu (MMBtu).

A Novel Framework to Quantify Power Grid Resilience

The quantification of an operating power grid’s resilience is highly significant today, given its criticality as an enabler of other infrastructures, complexity, and the threat it faces due to a wide range of detrimental events, from extreme climate to cyber attacks. Currently, there exist no standardized definitions and metrics for measuring the resilience of an operating grid. In this paper, we introduce a novel resilience quantification framework and demonstrate a method to measure the flexibility towards topological/structural changes due to potential failures in the power grid to assess operational resilience. We start with the state estimation data from a large utility and use the graph analysis methods and power flow simulation tools to compute the identified resilience parameters.
