Quantum simulation of charge and exciton transfer in multi-mode models using engineered reservoirs

Quantum simulation enables studies of open-system dynamics in non-perturbative regimes by programming electronic, vibrational, and environmental interactions on comparable energy scales. Trapped ions offer this capability, combining spins, phonons, and tunable dissipation on one platform. We demonstrate an open-system quantum simulation of charge and exciton transfer in a multi-mode linear vibronic coupling model. Using tailored spin-phonon interactions with reservoir engineering, we emulate a system with two dissipative vibrational modes coupled to donor and acceptor sites and track its non-equilibrium dynamics. We continuously tune the system from the charge transfer regime to the vibrationally assisted exciton transfer regime and find that degenerate modes enhance transfer rates at large energy gaps, while non-degenerate modes activate pathways that reduce the energy-gap dependence. Thus, the presence of one additional vibration introduces interfering pathways and reshapes non-perturbative excitation transfer. Our results establish a scalable, hardware-efficient route to simulate vibronic processes with engineered environments.

Developing a digital twin for hydropower systems - an open platform framework

The definition of digital twin in Wikipedia says “A digital twin is a virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process.” Indeed, the digital twin (DT) concept was initially introduced at the start of the 21st century with intent to create a digital model to reflect physical systems and derive insight from the model to make the decision on system operation. DT is also a promising enabling technology for realising smart manufacturing and industry 4.0. In general, DTs consist of three main parts: physical product, virtual product, and connected data that link physical and virtual product via various data communication schemes.

Stochastic equation of motion approach to fermionic dissipative dynamics. I. Formalism

In this work, we establish formally exact stochastic equation of motion (SEOM) theory to describe the dissipative dynamics of fermionic open systems. The construction of the SEOM is based on a stochastic decoupling of the dissipative interaction between the system and fermionic environment, and the influence of environmental fluctuations on the reduced system dynamics is characterized by stochastic Grassmann fields. Meanwhile, numerical realization of the time-dependent Grassmann fields has remained a long-standing challenge. To solve this problem, we propose a minimal auxiliary space (MAS) mapping scheme with which the stochastic Grassmann fields are represented by conventional c-number fields along with a set of pseudo-levels. This eventually leads to a numerically feasible MAS-SEOM method. The important properties of the MAS-SEOM are analyzed by making connection to the well-established time-dependent perturbation theory and the hierarchical equations of motion theory. The MAS-SEOM method provides a potentially promising approach for the accurate and efficient simulation of fermionic open systems at ultra-low temperatures.

Open quantum system approach to inclusive jet production in heavy-ion collisions

We derive a factorization formula for inclusive jet production in heavy-ion collisions using the tools of Effective Field Theory (EFT). We show how physics at widely separated scales in this process can be systematically separated by matching to EFTs at successively lower virtualities. Owing to a strong scale separation, we recover a vacuum-like DGLAP evolution above the jet scale, while the additional low-energy scales induced by the medium effectively probe the internal structure of the jet. As a result, the cross section can be written as a series with an increasing number of subjets characterized by perturbative matching coefficients each of which is convolved with a distinct function. These functions encode broadening, medium-induced radiations as well as quantum interference such as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect and color coherence dynamics to all orders in perturbation theory. As a first application of this EFT framework, we investigate the case of an unresolved jet and show how the cross section can be factorized and fully separate the jet dynamics from the universal physics of the medium. To compare to the existing literature, we explicitly compute the medium jet function at next-to-leading order in the coupling and leading order in medium opacity.

Bottomonium suppression in an open quantum system using the quantum trajectories method

We solve the Lindblad equation describing the Brownian motion of a Coulombic heavy quark-antiquark pair in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma using the highly efficient Monte Carlo wave-function method. The Lindblad equation has been derived in the framework of pNRQCD and fully accounts for the quantum and non-Abelian nature of the system. The hydrodynamics of the plasma is realistically implemented through a 3+1D dissipative hydrodynamics code. We compute the bottomonium nuclear modification factor and compare with the most recent LHC data. The computation does not rely on any free parameter, as it depends on two transport coefficients that have been evaluated independently in lattice QCD. Our final results, which include late-time feed down of excited states, agree well with the available data from LHC 5.02 TeV PbPb collisions.

ProvSec: Open Cybersecurity System Provenance Analysis Benchmark Dataset with Labels

System provenance forensic analysis has been studied by a large body of research work. This area needs fine granularity data such as system calls along with event fields to track the dependencies of events. While prior work on security datasets has been proposed, we found a useful dataset of realistic attacks and details that are needed for high-quality provenance tracking is lacking. We created a new dataset of eleven vulnerable cases for system forensic analysis. It includes the full details of system calls including syscall parameters. Realistic attack scenarios with real software vulnerabilities and exploits are used. For each case, we created two sets of benign and adversary scenarios which are manually labeled for supervised machine-learning analysis. In addition, we present an algorithm to improve the data quality in the system provenance forensic analysis. We demonstrate the details of the dataset events and dependency analysis of our dataset cases.

Evolution of Droplet Size Distributions During the Transition of an Ultraclean Stratocumulus Cloud System to Open Cell Structure: An LES Investigation Using Lagrangian Microphysics

Here, a state-of-the-art Lagrangian microphysics scheme is used in a large-eddy simulation to investigate the stratocumulus transition from closed to open cell structure. Processes controlling precipitation development, which is a key to the transition, are analyzed by leveraging unique benefits of Lagrangian microphysics, particularly the ability to track computational drops in the flow. Sufficient time is needed for coalescence growth of cloud drops to drizzle within the updraft-downdraft cycle of large eddies. This favors broad drop size distributions (DSDs) and drizzle growth in downdrafts, where drops are typically much older than in updrafts. During the closed cell stage, mean cloud drop radius is too small, and the DSDs are too narrow, so that the timescale for coalescence is much longer than the large eddy turnover time and drizzle growth is limited. The closed-to-open cell transition occurs when these timescales become comparable and the precipitation flux increases sharply.

Simulating Open Quantum Systems Using Hamiltonian Simulations

We present a novel method to simulate the Lindblad equation, drawing on the relationship between Lindblad dynamics, stochastic differential equations, and Hamiltonian simulations. We derive a sequence of unitary dynamics in an enlarged Hilbert space that can approximate the Lindblad dynamics up to an arbitrarily high order. This unitary representation can then be simulated using a quantum circuit that involves only Hamiltonian simulation and tracing out the ancilla qubits. There is no need for additional postselection in measurement outcomes, ensuring a success probability of one at each stage. Our method can be directly generalized to the time-dependent setting. We provide numerical examples that simulate both time-independent and time-dependent Lindbladian dynamics with accuracy up to the third order. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
