Toggling Stereochemical Activity through Interstitial Positioning of Cations between 2D V 2 O 5 Double Layers

The 5/6s 2 lone-pair electrons of p-block cations in their lower oxidation states are a versatile electronic and geometric structure motif that can underpin lattice anharmonicity and often engender electronic and structural instabilities that underpin the function of active elements in nonlinear optics, thermochromics, thermoelectrics, neuromorphic computing, and photocatalysis. In contrast to periodic solids where lone-pair-bearing cations are part of the structural framework, installing lone-pair-bearing cations in the interstitial sites of intercalation hosts provides a means of a systematically modulating electronic structure through the choice of the group and the period of the inserted cation while preserving the overall framework connectivity. The extent of stereochemical activity and the energy positioning of lone-pair-derived mid-gap states depend on the cation identity, stoichiometry, and strength of anion hybridization. V 2 O 5 polymorphs are versatile insertion hosts that can accommodate a broad range of s-, p-, and d-block cations. However, the insertion of lone-pair-bearing cations remains largely underexplored. In this article, we examine the implications of varying the 6s 2 cations situated in interlayer sites between condensed [V 4 O 10 ] n double layers. Systematic modulations of lattice distortions, electronic structure, and magnetic ordering are observed with increasing strength of stereochemical activity from group 12 to group 14 cations. We compare and contrast p-block-layered M x V 2 O 5 (M = Hg, Tl, and Pb) compounds and map the significance of local off-centering arising from the stereochemical activity of lone-pair cations to the emergence of filled antibonding lone-pair 6s 2 –O 2p-hybridized mid-gap states mediated by second-order Jahn–Teller distortions. Crystallographic studies of cation coordination environments and the resulting modulation of V–V interactions have been used in conjunction with variable-energy hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, first-principles electronic structure calculations, and crystal orbital Hamilton population analyses to decipher the origins of stereochemical activity. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal antiferromagnetic signatures for all the three compounds. However, the differences in V–V interactions significantly affect the energy balance of the superexchange interactions, resulting in an ordering temperature of 160 and 260 K for Hg 0.5 V 2 O 5 and δ-Tl 0.5 V 2 O 5 , respectively, as compared to 7 K for δ-Pb 0.5 V 2 O 5 . In δ-Pb 0.5 V 2 O 5 , the strong stereochemical activity of electron lone pairs and the resulting electrostatic repulsions enforce superlattice ordering, which strongly modifies the electronic localization patterns along the [V 4 O 10 ] slabs, resulting in disrupted magnetic ordering and an anomalously low ordering temperature. The results demonstrate a versatile strategy for toggling the stereochemical activity of electron lone pairs to modify the electronic structure near the Fermi level and to mediate superexchange interactions.

Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn): High Chemical Flexibility Resulting in Good Nonlinear-Optical Properties

Seven acentric sulfides Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) were grown by a high-temperature salt flux method. The crystal structures of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with the aid of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the Ba 6 Ag 4 Sn 4 S 16 structure type. The Sn-containing compound exhibits high structural similarity to Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) with the presence of an interstitial atomic position partially occupied by Sn atoms. The chemical bonding characteristics of Ba 6 (Cu 2.9 Sn 0.4 )Sn 4 S 16 were understood with electron localization function calculations coupled with crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations. The Ba–S and Cu–S interactions are dominantly ionic, but the Sn–S interactions consist of strong covalent bonding characteristics in Ba 6 (Cu 2.9 Sn 0.4 )Sn 4 S 16 . The monovalent Cu atoms, mixed with certain metals with various oxidation states, significantly shift the optical properties of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) compounds. This results in a good balance between the second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response and laser damage threshold (LDT). Ba 6 (Cu 1.9 Zn 1.1 )Sn 4 S 16 possesses a high SHG response and a high LDT of 2.8 × AGS and 3 × AGS, respectively. Here, a density functional theory calculation revealed that CuS 4 and SnS 4 tetrahedra significantly contribute to the SHG response in Ba 6 (Cu 2 Mg)Sn 4 S 16 , which also confirmed that CuS 4 tetrahedra are crucial for the stability and optical properties of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) compounds revealed by electronic structure analysis.

Twin-pulse seeding enables pump-probe capabilities in the EUV to soft X-ray spectrum at synchrotron light sources

Having previously reported that separating the two stages of echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) with one or more bending magnet (BM) sections allows the BMs to serve as the desired source of momentum compaction, here we demonstrate that this arrangement can greatly reduce the total energy modulation required by any 4th generation synchrotron light source, leading to higher repetition rates as well as stronger coherent radiation output power, with significant benefits. Since the EEHG beamline performance is mainly determined by the momentum compaction, beam emittances and beta functions of a storage ring lattice, allowing for different separations between the two stages is a straightforward way to increase the momentum compaction of chicane 1. This also enables pump-probe capabilities in a novel context, where twin-pulse seeding on the same electron bunch would allow two distinct radiation pulses with an adjustable delay in the range of 0.1 to 10 ps. In the twin-pulse seeding scheme, the same electron bunch could undergo modulation from two distinct laser pulses. Later stages would produce independent harmonics in subsequent straight sections. There are two variations of this twin-pulse seeding scheme, supporting different scientific applications. With a common modulation in stage 1, the first option allows simultaneously two independent radiation sources, with a full coverage of the EUV (2.5 to 50 nm) to soft X-ray (1.25 to 2.5 nm) spectrum; for the second option, the same stage 2 undulator could generate two coherent pulses both fitting within the FEL bandwidth, or at distinct harmonics. We present particle tracking simulation studies based on the APS-U lattice, including quantum excitation and radiation damping. These simulations indicate that there is no degradation of the modulated longitudinal phase space even when the two stages are separated by as many as 10 BM sections.

Hidden anomalies in topological t – PtBi 2 – x probed by second harmonic generation

The noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal PtBi 2–x (t-PtBi 2–x ) exhibits various interesting technologically important physical properties. We report the experimental investigation of PtBi 1.6 via second harmonic generation (SHG), single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. While bulk structural, magnetic, and electrical properties show no phase transitions below room temperature, the temperature dependence of the SHG intensity reveals two anomalies: one at T* ~ 60 K and another at T x ~ 200 K. Quantitative analysis indicates that the SHG signal results from both the buckled Bi1 surface termination with the 3m symmetry and flat Bi2 surface termination with the m symmetry. However, the anomalies are mainly driven by Bi1 on the surface: (1) T* marks the onset of surface states which is also manifested in the c-axis resistivity drop and (2) T x corresponds to the lowest thermal contraction of the structure and enhanced magnetic susceptibility. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that SHG is a powerful technique for probing surface properties even for noncentrosymmetric materials.
