A study to analyze six band multispectral images and fabricate a Fourier transform detector

An automatic Fourier transform diffraction pattern sampling system, used to investigate techniques for forestry classification of six band multispectral aerial photography is presented. Photographs and diagrams of the design, development and fabrication of a hybrid optical-digital Fourier transform detector are shown. The detector was designed around a concentric ring fiber optic array. This array was formed from many optical fibers which were sorted into concentric rings about a single fiber. All the fibers in each ring were collected into a bundle and terminated into a single photodetector. An optical/digital interface unit consisting of a high level multiplexer, and an analog-to-digital amplifier was also constructed and is described.

Analysis of the characteristics appearing in LANDSAT multispectral images in the geological structural mapping of the midwestern portion of the Rio Grande do Sul shield

The central-western part of Rio Grande do Sul Shield was geologically mapped to test the use of MSS-LANDSAT data in the study of mineralized regions. Visual interpretation of the images a the scale of 1:500,000 consisted, in the identification and analysis of the different tonal and textural patterns in each spectral band. After the structural geologic mapping of the area, using visual interpretation techniques, the statistical data obtained were evaluated, specially data concerning size and direction of fractures. The IMAGE-100 system was used to enlarge and enhance certain imagery. The LANDSAT MSS data offer several advantages over conventional white and black aerial photographs for geological studies. Its multispectral characteristic (band 6 and false color composition of bands 4, 5 and 7 were best suitable for the study). Coverage of a large imaging area of about 35,000 sq km, giving a synoptical view, is very useful for perceiving the regional geological setting.

Progressive Vector Quantization on a massively parallel SIMD machine with application to multispectral image data

A progressive vector quantization (VQ) compression approach is discussed which decomposes image data into a number of levels using full search VQ. The final level is losslessly compressed, enabling lossless reconstruction. The computational difficulties are addressed by implementation on a massively parallel SIMD machine. We demonstrate progressive VQ on multispectral imagery obtained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instrument and other Earth observation image data, and investigate the trade-offs in selecting the number of decomposition levels and codebook training method.

A solid state multispectral imager.

Photodiode arrays used as image sensors in satellite remote imaging systems offer the advantages of geometric accuracy, precise registration of scene elements, enhanced operational reliability, and wide spectral response. Principles of photodiode-array operation are reviewed, and the latest developments in self-scanned array chip technology are described along with optical system requirements for multispectral coverage. Results of development efforts with a spaceborne solid-state multispectral camera based on linear sensing array technology are outlined to demonstrate the capabilities of this approach to multispectral sensing.

Photointerpretation of ERTS-A multispectral images analysis of vegetation and land use for the Valencia Lake Basin region

The area of investigation includes part of the Central and Capital Region of Venezuela. Climatic conditions define the existence of different ecological associations with biological forms well defined in their physiognomic complexity as they reach complete development in environments related to gross geomorphic units: coastal area, northern mountain range, fluvio-lacustrines plains, southern mountain range, southern ridges and parts of Venezuelan central plains. In this area, rainfall varies from 600 mm to 2000 mm and evapotranspiration indexes indicate the existence of vegetation for semiarid conditions ( tropical very dry forest) as well as vegetation for very humid conditions (very humid premontane forest). This project was designed for: (1) Location of areas with representative ecosystems for the purpose of managing planning. (2) Identification of structural and physiognomic characteristics of vegetation. (3) Assessment of human activity effects on environmental debasement. (4) Definition of the content and possibilities of orbital ERTS images for the study of urban and rural land use. (5) Setting photointerpretation patterns applicable to areas of similar gross environmental conditions.

Multispectral imaging and analysis system

Arrays of charge coupled devices or linear detector arrays simultaneously obtain spectral reflectance data of different wavelengths for a target area. Several accommodating a particular bandwidth, are individually associated with each array. Data from the arrays are read out in parallel and applied to a computer or microprocessor for processing. The microprocessor serves to analyze the data in real time and if possible, in accordance with hard-wired algorithms. The data are then displayed as an image on an appropriate display unit and also recorded for further use. The display system may be operationally connected to receive a terrain image such that the target area and the analyzed spectral reflectance data are superimposed and simultaneously displayed.

Diagnosis of cutaneous thermal burn injuries by multispectral imaging analysis

Special photographic or television image analysis is shown to be a potentially useful technique to assist the physician in the early diagnosis of thermal burn injury. A background on the medical and physiological problems of burns is presented. The proposed methodology for burns diagnosis from both the theoretical and clinical points of view is discussed. The television/computer system constructed to accomplish this analysis is described, and the clinical results are discussed.

Lunar multispectral imaging at 2.26 microns - First results

The first results of line-scan imaging of the moon at 2.26 microns and 0.56 micron are presented. Among the many features observed in the 2.26 micron/0.56 micron ratio image, fresh rock and immature soils stand out as dark (i.e., low ratio) due to their infrared absorption bands. Also notable in this image are several strikingly bright (high 2.26 micron/0.56 micron ratio) areas which are likely to contain pyroclastic, glass-related materials. Some of these bright areas correspond to dark mantling material. Others (e.g., Sulpicius Gallus, Aristarchus Plateau) are distinctly different in their overall spectral reflectance and it is suggested that these localities contain varieties of pyroclastic glass-related materials which were not sampled by Apollo 17 but which are relatively abundant elsewhere on the moon.
