Large negative magnetoresistance in antiferromagnetic G⁡d 2 ⁢S⁢e 3

Rare earth chalcogenides provide a great platform to study exotic quantum phenomena such as superconductivity and charge density waves. Among various interesting properties, the coupling between magnetism and electronic transport has attracted significant attention. Here, we report the investigation of such coupling in α-G⁡d 2⁢ S⁢e 3 single crystals through magnetic, calorimetric, and transport property measurements. α-G⁡d 2 ⁢S⁢e 3 is found to display an antiferromagnetic ground state below 11 K with metamagnetic spin-flop transitions. The magnetic fluctuations remain strong above the transition temperature. Transport measurements reveal an overall metallic transport behavior with a large negative magnetoresistance of approximately 65% near the magnetic transition temperature, together with positive magnetoresistance near the field-induced spin-flop transitions, which can be understood in terms of the suppression of spin scattering by the magnetic field.

Anomalous Hall effect in the polar magnet Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 : A candidate for hosting skyrmions

While recent theoretical studies have positioned noncollinear polar magnets with C nv symmetry as compelling candidates for realizing topological magnetic phases and substantial intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity, experimental realizations of the same in strongly correlated systems remain rare. Here, we present a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and extended topological magnetic ordering in Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 with hexagonal C 6v symmetry. Observation of topological Hall response, corroborated by metamagnetic anomalies in isothermal magnetization, peak/hump features in field-evolution of ac susceptibility and longitudinal resistivity suggest the signature of topological magnetic phases. The anomalous Hall effect is quantitatively accounted for by the intrinsic Berry curvature-mediated mechanism. Finally, our results underscore polar magnets as a promising platform to investigate a plethora of emergent electrodynamic responses rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology.

Layer-dependent spin-resolved electronic structure of ferromagnetic triple-layered ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10

High-resolution angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of the triple-layered ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10 reveals features of the electronic structure that extend our understanding of the layered strontium ruthenates. The spectra near the Fermi energy are very different from the nonmagnetic analogues Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 with distinct Fermi surfaces for wide electronlike minority spin bands around the zone center and narrow holelike majority spin Fermi surface contours around the zone corners. The most dramatic results are two narrow spectral peaks ∼30 meV below the Fermi level, a spin-minority holelike band at the Brillouin zone center, and a spin-majority saddle-band van Hove singularity at the zone edge, which exhibits almost 100% spin polarization at low temperature, and a strong temperature dependent coherence-incoherence crossover attributed to Hund metal correlations. Quantitative comparison of the ARPES to spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations identify the specific antibonding and nonbonding orbital origins of the narrow bands, with a prediction of different spatial localization in the central and outer layers. This is shown to be consistent with experimental ARPES multizone matrix element intensity variations, and implicates outer-layer-specific control of the in-plane metamagnetism. The renormalization of the bands relative to the mean-field DFT, the demonstration of spin-polarized oxygen bands, and of spin-minority and spin-majority band-crossing hybridization provide a more complete picture of the magnetism which displays aspects of both delocalized and local moment behavior.

Robust A -Type Order and Spin-Flop Transition on the Surface of the Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Here, we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi 2 Te 4 single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transitions, which have been theoretically proposed decades ago. Our results not only provide key ingredients for understanding the electronic properties of the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 , but also open a new paradigm for exploring intrinsic surface metamagnetic transitions in natural antiferromagnets.

Extremely Weakly Interacting ΔS z = 0 and ΔS z = 1 Excitations and Evidence for Fractional Quantization in a Magnetization Plateau: CeSb

The plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization $M_s$ in the metamagnet CeSb is accompanied by a state of ferromagnetic layers of spins in an up-up-down sequence. We measured M and the specific heat C in the plateau, spin wave analyses of which reveal two distinct branches of excitations. Those with $ΔS_z = 1$ as measured by M, coexist with a much larger population of $ΔS_z = 0$ excitations measured by C but invisible to M. The large density of $ΔS_z = 0$ excitations, their energy gap, and their seeming lack of interaction with $ΔS_z = 1$ excitations suggest an analogy with astrophysical dark matter. Furthermore, in the middle of the plateau three sharp jumps in M(H) are seen, the size of which, $0.15 \% M_s$, is consistent with fractional quantization of magnetization per site in the down-spin layers.

Direct Visualization of Surface Spin-Flip Transition in MnBi 4 Te 7

Here, we report direct visualization of spin-flip transition of the surface layer in antiferromagnet MnBi 4 Te 7 , a natural superlattice of alternating MnBi 2 Te 4 and Bi 2 Te 3 layers, using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The observation of magnetic contrast across domain walls and step edges confirms that the antiferromagnetic order persists to the surface layers. The magnetic field dependence of the MFM images reveals that the surface magnetic layer undergoes a first-order spin-flip transition at a magnetic field that is lower than the bulk transition, in excellent agreement with a revised Mills model. Our analysis suggests no reduction of the order parameter in the surface magnetic layer, implying robust ferromagnetism in the single-layer limit. The direct visualization of surface spin-flip transition not only opens up exploration of surface metamagnetic transitions in layered antiferromagnets, but also provides experimental support for realizing quantized transport in ultrathin films of MnBi 4 Te 7 and other natural superlattice topological magnets.

Frustrated magnetism in the layered triangular lattice materials K 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2 and Rb 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2

A study of the layered triangular lattice materials K 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2 and Rb 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2 is reported here. These isostructural compounds crystallize in the trigonal space group R-3m (No. 166). The magnetic Co 2+ ions form a spin-1/2 triangular lattice and display strongly frustrated magnetism. We find no evidence in the susceptibility or heat capacity for in-plane ordering of the spins; rather the in-plane inverse susceptibility is typical of that seen for frustrated magnets. At around 10 K, a ferromagnetic component appears in the magnetic susceptibility perpendicular to the triangular planes. The heat capacity at low applied fields does not show sharp features, but in larger applied fields a sharp ferromagneticlike transition appears. Field- and direction-dependent magnetization measurements at 2 K indicate that both materials have a magnetic easy axis perpendicular to the triangular planes. The magnetic properties are sensitive to the field applied perpendicular to the triangular planes, which induces a metamagnetization transition at 0.75 T. Spin polarization develops along with the increasing out-of-plane field, resulting in a saturated ferromagnetic state at high fields. In contrast, the magnetic properties are resistant to the in-plane field. Our results suggest that these materials are embodiments of Ising spins on triangular lattices with easy-axis anisotropy.

Single crystal synthesis and magnetic properties of a Shastry-Sutherland lattice compound BaNd 2 ZnS 5

In this study, single crystals of a Shastry-Sutherland magnetic semiconductor, BaNd 2 ZnS 5 , were synthesized through a high-temperature solution growth technique. Physical properties were characterized by powder and single crystal x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. BaNd 2 ZnS 5 orders antiferromagnetically at 2.9 K, with magnetic moments primarily aligned within the $ab$ -plane. Magnetic isothermal measurements show metamagnetic transitions at ~ 15 kOe for the [110] direction and ~ 21 kOe for the [100] direction. Estimated magnetic entropy suggests a double ground state for each neodymium ion.

Competition of magnetocrystalline anisotropy of uranium layers and zigzag chains in UNi 0.34 Ge 2 single crystals

Structural and thermodynamic properties of single-crystalline UNi 1-x Ge 2 with x = 0.66 have been investigated by measuring magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. The measurements revealed the emergence of a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments below the Néel temperature T N = 45.5 (1) K and the existence of two easy axes in the studied compound, namely b and c, which correspond to the planes of the uranium zig-zag chains. A magnetic field applied along these two crystallographic directions induces in the system a first-order metamagnetic phase transition (from antiferromagnetic to field-polarized paramagnetism), and the width of the magnetic hysteresis associated with that transition reaches as much as 40 kOe at the lowest temperatures. A magnetic phase diagram developed from the experimental data showed that the metastable region associated with that magnetic hysteresis forms a funnel that narrows toward the N´eel point in a zero magnetic field. The four-layer Ising model has successfully predicted the colinear antiferromagnetic structure in UNi 0.34 Ge 2 (known from earlier reports), its magnetic phase diagram, and temperature and field variations of its magnetization. Moreover, it suggests that the first-order phase transition extends down to zero magnetic field, although it is barely detectable in the experiments performed in low magnetic fields. According to this model, the second-order phase transition occurs in the compound only in zero field.

Magnetic properties of the quasi-XY Shastry-Sutherland magnet ER 2 Be 2 SiO 7

Polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of the insulating Shastry-Sutherland compound Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 were synthesized via a solid-state reaction and the floating zone method, respectively. The crystal structure, Er single-ion anisotropy, zero-field magnetic ground state, and magnetic phase diagrams along high-symmetry crystallographic directions were investigated with bulk measurement techniques, x-ray and neutron diffraction, and neutron spectroscopy. Here, we establish that Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 crystallizes in a tetragonal space group with planes of orthogonal Er dimers and a strong preference for the Er moments to lie in the local plane perpendicular to each dimer bond. We also find that this system has a noncollinear ordered ground state in zero field with a transition temperature of 0.841 K consisting of antiferromagnetic dimers and in-plane moments. Finally, we mapped out the H-T phase diagrams for Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 along the directions H ∥ [001], [100], and [110]. While an increasing in-plane field simply induces a phase transition to a field-polarized phase, we identify three metamagnetic transitions in the H ∥ [001] case. Single-crystal neutron diffraction results reveal that the H ∥ [001] phase diagram can be explained predominantly by the expected field-induced behavior of classical, anisotropic moments, although the microscopic origin of one phase requires further investigation.

Growth-controlled twinning and magnetic anisotropy in CeSb 2

Cerium diantimonide (CeSb 2 ) is a layered heavy-fermion Kondo lattice material that hosts complex magnetism and pressure-induced superconductivity. The interpretation of its in-plane anisotropy has remained unsettled due to structural twinning, which superimposes orthogonal magnetic responses. Here, in this study, we combine controlled crystal growth with magnetization and rotational magnetometry to disentangle the effects of twinning. Nearly untwinned high-quality single crystals reveal the intrinsic in-plane anisotropy: The in-plane easy axis saturates at 𝑀 easy ⁡(4 T) ≈ 1.8 𝜇 B /Ce, while the in-plane hard axis magnetization is strongly suppressed, nearly linear, and comparable to the out-of-plane response. These results resolve long-standing discrepancies in reported magnetic measurements, in which in-plane metamagnetic transition fields and saturation magnetization varied significantly across previous studies. Growth experiments demonstrate that avoiding the proposed 𝛼 𝛽 structural transition—through Sb-rich flux and slower cooling—systematically reduces twinning. However, powder x-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis measurements show no clear evidence of a distinct 𝛽 phase. Our results establish a consistent magnetic phase diagram and provide essential constraints for crystal-electric field models, enabling a clearer understanding of the interplay between anisotropic magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in CeSb 2 .

Single-crystalline orthorhombic GdAlGe as a rare-earth magnetic Dirac nodal-line metal

Crystal engineering is a method for discovering new quantum materials and phases, which may be achieved using external pressure or strain. Chemical pressure is unique in that it generates internal pressure perpetually to the lattice. As an example, GdAlSi from the rare-earth (𝑅) 𝑅⁢Al⁢𝑋 (𝑋=Si or Ge) family of Weyl semimetals is considered. Replacing Si with the larger isovalent element Ge creates sufficiently large chemical pressure to induce a structural transition from the tetragonal structure of GdAlSi, compatible with a Weyl semimetallic state, to an orthorhombic phase in GdAlGe, resulting in an inversion-symmetry-protected nodal-line metal. We find that GdAlGe hosts an antiferromagnetic ground state with two successive orderings, at 𝑇 N ⁢1=35K and 𝑇 N ⁢2=30K. In-plane isothermal magnetization shows a magnetic field induced metamagnetic transition at 6.2 T for 2 K. Furthermore, electron-hole compensation gives rise to a large magnetoresistance of ∼100% at 2 K and 14 T. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal a Dirac-like linear band dispersion over an exceptionally large energy range of ∼1.5eV with a high Fermi velocity of ∼10 6 m/s, a rare feature not observed in any magnetic topological materials.

Hall effect in LaCrGe 3 at pressures up to 24 kbar and a 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of the pressure-induced magnetic phase

LaCrGe 3 is a metallic, itinerant ferromagnet with 𝑇 𝐶 ≈ 86K and an easy magnetic direction along its hexagonal 𝑐 axis. Here we present studies of the 𝐻 ∥ 𝑐 Hall effect in LaCrGe 3 at ambient pressure and under pressures up to 24 kbar. At ambient pressure the anomalous Hall conductivity in the ferromagnetic state reaches a large value of ∼520 Ω − 1 cm −1 . The overall data are consistent with the behavior expected for a ferromagnet with magnetic field applied along its easy axis. Measurements under pressure yield an 𝐻 = 0, 𝑃−𝑇 phase diagram consistent with earlier publications with 𝑇 𝐶 being suppressed with pressure and nonferromagnetic phases appearing for 𝑃 >15 kbar. The data suggest that the observed 𝑇 𝐶 suppression is due to the pressure-dependent exchange interactions rather than suppression of the size of the magnetic moment. Field-dependent Hall resistivity in the higher-pressure, nonferromagnetic state is consistent with the net moment being zero for 𝐻=0. In a finite field there is a sharp anomaly comparable to the one associated with a spin-flip metamagnetic transition. The 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagrams corresponding to a pressure-induced magnetic phase are constructed for several pressures. In conclusion, the Hall data suggest the possibility of the pressure-induced nonferromagnetic phase being a combination of multiple small regions of antiferromagnetic phases with different wave vectors.

Physical properties of 𝑅⁢ Co 2 ⁢Al 8 single crystals (𝑅 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) : An emerging structure-type for anisotropic Kondo-lattice studies

Systematic investigations of rare-earth (𝑅)-based intermetallic materials are a leading strategy to reveal the underlying mechanisms governing a range of physical phenomena, such as the formation of a Kondo lattice and competing electronic and magnetic anisotropies. Here, in this work, the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of 𝑅⁢Co 2 ⁢Al 8 (𝑅 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) single crystals are presented. LaCo 2 ⁢Al 8 is characterized as a Pauli paramagnet, and transport measurements, with the current along and perpendicular to the orthorhombic 𝑐-axis (𝜌 𝑐 and 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 , respectively), reveal a clear electronic anisotropy, with 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 ⁢≈ (4 –7)⁢𝜌 𝑐 at 300K . We show that CeCo 2 ⁢Al 8 is a Kondo lattice for which the Kondo coherence temperature 𝑇$^*_K$, deduced from broad maximums in 𝜌 𝑐 and 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 at ≈ 68 and 46 K, respectively, is also anisotropic. This finding is related to a possible underlying anisotropy of the Kondo coupling in CeCo 2⁢ Al 8 . The Pr- and Nd-based materials present strong easy-axis anisotropy (𝑐-axis) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders below 𝑇 = 4.84 and 8.1K , respectively. Metamagnetic transitions from this AFM to a spin-polarized paramagnetic phase state are investigated by isothermal magnetization measurements. The Sm-based compound is also an easy-axis AFM with a transition at 𝑇 = 21.6K .

Extraordinary anisotropic magnetoresistance in CaMnO 3 /CaIrO 3 heterostructures

The realization of four-fold anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in novel 3d-5d heterostructures has boosted major efforts in antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, despite the potential of incorporating strong spin-orbit coupling, only small AMR signals have been detected thus far, prompting a search for new mechanisms to enhance the signal. In this study on CaMnO 3 /CaIrO 3 heterostructures, we report a unique dual-four-fold symmetric 70% AMR; a signal two orders of magnitude larger than previously observed in similar systems. We find that one order is enhanced by tuning a large biaxial anisotropy through octahedral tilts of similar sense in the constituent layers, while the second order is triggered by a spin-flop transition in a nearly Mott-type phase. Dynamics between these two phenomena as evidenced by the step-like AMR and a superimposed biaxial-anisotropy-induced AMR capture a subtle interplay of pseudospin coupling with the lattice and external magnetic field. Furthermore, our study shows that a combination of charge-transfer, interlayer coupling, and a spin-flop transition can yield a giant AMR relevant for sensing and antiferromagnetic memory applications.

Structural transition and anisotropic magnetism in disordered Zintl phase Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8

Single crystals of the Zintl compound Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 were synthesized using a Ga-Sb flux. We report the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), magnetization (M), resistivity (ρ), specific heat (C), and thermal expansion (α). We also report high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction data that support a structural phase transition with accompanying signatures seen in C(T), ρ(T), and α(T). We find Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 = 9.0 K from anomalies seen in χ(T), C(T), and α(T), as well as a potential reorientation of Eu 2+ spins at T N2 = 7.5 K and T N3 = 7.2 K. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations predict Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 to be semiconducting; however, electrical resistivity measurements show bad-metal behavior that indicates the presence of disorder.
