Genome‐enabled exploration of microbial ecology and evolution in the sea: a rising tide lifts all boats

Summary As a young bacteriologist just launching my career during the early days of the ‘microbial revolution’ in the 1980s, I was fortunate to participate in some early discoveries, and collaborate in the development of cross‐disciplinary methods now commonly referred to as "metagenomics". My early scientific career focused on applying phylogenetic and genomic approaches to characterize ‘wild’ bacteria, archaea and viruses in their natural habitats, with an emphasis on marine systems. These central interests have not changed very much for me over the past three decades, but knowledge, methodological advances and new theoretical perspectives about the microbial world certainly have. In this invited ‘How we did it’ perspective, I trace some of the trajectories of my lab's collective efforts over the years, including phylogenetic surveys of microbial assemblages in marine plankton and sediments, development of microbial community gene‐ and genome‐enabled surveys, and application of genome‐guided, cultivation‐independent functional characterization of novel enzymes, pathways and their relationships to in situ biogeochemistry. Throughout this short review, I attempt to acknowledge, all the mentors, students, postdocs and collaborators who enabled this research. Inevitably, a brief autobiographical review like this cannot be fully comprehensive, so sincere apologies to any of my great colleagues who are not explicitly mentioned herein. I salute you all as well!

ADPSM Learning Team Review 2015-001. NPI-7 Drum/POC Dropped – Leads to Improved Lifting

As part of the ADPSM Safety Improvement Plan, the WSST has established a subcommittee for a Learning Team. The purpose of a Learning Team is to transfer and communicate the information into operational feedback and improvement. We want to pay attention to the small things that go wrong because they are often early warning signals and may provide insight into the health of the whole system.

Industrial Ergonomics And Safe Lifting Practices: Food Depot [Slides]

Injuries happen when we go beyond what tissues can handle. It's repeated loading and subsequent failure of soft tissue that seem to account for most low back pain. This presentation discusses some common causes of workplace injuries and ways to reduce the likelihood of them happening.

Lifting the Garage Door on Spawn, An Open-Source BEM-Controls Engine

Spawn is the latest whole-building energy simulation engine developed by the US Department of Energy, National Labs and industry. Whereas EnergyPlus was designed as a successor to DOE-2, Spawn is not a direct successor of–nor is it intended as an imminent replacement for– EnergyPlus. Instead, Spawn reuses parts of EnergyPlus while supporting new use cases in HVAC and controls. Spawn is intended to provide several capabilities that significantly advance beyond EnergyPlus. It is intended to support the evaluation of novel HVAC and district energy systems in a more physically realistic way. Critically, it can model control in a physically realistic way, using portable specifications that can be compiled for execution on control platforms. Spawn is also intended to support co-simulation in an intrinsic way to enable integration with third-party models. This paper describes the software architecture of Spawn from model authoring to compilation and simulation. It explains how Spawn reuses the envelope and daylighting modules of EnergyPlus and couples them to HVAC and control models from the Modelica Buildings Library using the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) standard. It presents a number of examples that: i) validate Spawn’s coupled simulation approach by comparing its results to those of EnergyPlus, ii) illustrate the Spawn methodology for modeling and simulating HVAC systems, and iii) evaluate the performance of Spawn’s Quantized State System (QSS) time integration algorithms

Discrete variable valve lift engine systems and methods

A method of providing a rocker arm set for a valvetrain includes providing a first rocker arm configured as a switching rocker arm for a first intake valve, and providing a second rocker arm configured as a fixed rocker arm for a second intake valve, the second rocker arm operating in a normal Otto cycle mode. The first rocker arm operates in a late intake valve closing (LIVC) mode where the first rocker arm is configured to close the first intake valve later than the second intake valve.
