Chemical Characterization of Natural Gas Leaking from Abandoned Oil and Gas Wells in Western Pennsylvania

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are over 3.2 million abandoned wells in the United States. Studies conducted on gas emissions from abandoned wells have been limited to methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, due to concerns regarding climate change. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including benzene, a known human carcinogen, are known to be associated with upstream oil and gas development and hence could also be released when methane is emitted to the atmosphere. In this investigation, we analyze gas from 48 abandoned wells in western Pennsylvania for fixed gases, light hydrocarbons, and VOCs and estimate associated emission rates. We demonstrate that (1) gas from abandoned wells contains VOCs, including benzene; (2) VOCs are emitted from abandoned wells, the magnitude of which depends on the flow rate and concentration of VOCs in the gas stream; and (3) nearly one-quarter of abandoned wells are located within 100 m of buildings, including residences, in Pennsylvania. Together, these observations indicate that further investigation is necessary to determine whether emissions from abandoned wells pose an inhalation risk to people living, working, or congregating near abandoned wells.

Simplified Green-Ampt Model, Imbibition-Based Estimates of Permeability, and Implications for Leak-off in Hydraulic Fracturing

Predicting water imbibition into porous materials is important in a wide variety of fields, and hydraulic fracturing of low permeability hydrocarbon reservoirs has emerged as an application that is imposing a large water footprint. Furthermore, reliable predictions of imbibition are needed to better manage water use, yet are challenging because of uncertainties in both the permeability and capillary pressure driving force. Here, this uncertainty is reduced through evaluating correlations between the permeability and the effective capillary pressure associated with the wetting front, P c,f . These correlations allow elimination of P c,f from the Green and Ampt equation and concentrate all uncertainties in fluxes on the effective permeability k . Over a wide range of k and porosities n , imbibition scales approximately with k 1/3 . Although Leverett k 1/4 scaling for predicting P c,f is shown to be inferior when tested with data spanning a wide range of n , it nevertheless predicted imbibition fairly well. From simple imbibition measurements, both the empirical and Leverett scaling approaches allow estimates of k that have root-mean-square deviations of about one order of magnitude relative to measurements that ranged over 10 orders of magnitude in k .

Software For Automated Leak Detection Using Infrared Camera

This code can read in videos or images in either a batch or real-time format. Videos are broken up into frames, and the frames are processed using an optical flow algorithm to decipher movement between adjacent frames. This adherent movement is ran through a convolutional neural network that automatically classifies the contents of the video. Additional content inside the code aids with noisy images and removal of nuisance movement.

Sealed Vessel Leak Test [Slides]

A test plan has been developed to verify the results obtained from sealed vessels used in support of the JT5-Alt370-IN-1 compatibility testing. The test plan needs to be verified by doing a mock test on testing vessels, it will be adjusted and redone as necessary then conducted on the remaining vessels from the compatibility tests.

Canister Helium Leak Detection Based on Temperature Information Using RAMM (Final CRADA Report)

The performance of RAMM-TM in detecting gas leakage from a canister with a small, simulated chloride-induced stress corrosion crack has been demonstrated in a series of experiments conducted at CRIEPI by using a 1/4.5- scale model cask. Leakage of both helium and air from a canister was detected within hours after the start of the leakage. The change in surface temperatures at the top and bottom of the canister (ΔTBT) during gas leakage (depressurization) triggered automatic alarms, providing a sound basis for early detection of gas leakage from the canister. This methodology would enable consequence management through the implementation of mitigatory actions to continue effective aging management, to reduce risks to public safety and health, and to protect the environment.

Characterization of Infrequent Samples from the Concentration, Storage, and Transfer Facility: Leak Detection Box (LDB) Drain Cell Sample: August 04, 2022 Sample

Savannah River Mission Completion Engineering (SRMC-E) requested that the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) analyze the Concentration, Storage, and Transfer Facility (CSTF) samples from the following Tank Farm areas: the sump encasement, catch tank, drain cell, and waste tank annulus. In general, these CSTF samples will be analyzed on an infrequent basis and analyses will include detection for total beta/gamma activities, total alpha activity, free hydroxide, and pH measurements.

High-Temperature Freeze & Leak-Resistant Advanced Molten Salt Valve (Final Project Report)

The overall goal of this investigation was to develop an innovative high-temperature chloride molten salt flow control valve capable of operation up to 750 °C. The team developed an integrated active and passive thermal management system to ensure robust design for freeze-thaw cycles, with either a bellows-sealed configuration, a high-temperature stuffing box, or combination of the two. The STM system is unique in the industry.

Mitigating leaks in membranes

Two-dimensional material based filters, their method of manufacture, and their use are disclosed. In one embodiment, a membrane may include an active layer including a plurality of defects and a deposited material associated with the plurality of defects may reduce flow therethrough. Additionally, a majority of the active layer may be free from the material. In another embodiment, a membrane may include a porous substrate and an atomic layer deposited material disposed on a surface of the porous substrate. The atomic layer deposited material may be less hydrophilic than the porous substrate and an atomically thin active layer may be disposed on the atomic layer deposited material.
