A skyrmionic topology perspective on Lehmann clusters

When two parallel coplanar dislocations with opposite Burgers vectors are brought into collision by the action of stress in solid crystals, they annihilate each other. In cholesterics with pitch p, under certain conditions, colliding dislocations with Burgers vectors b = p and b = − p are immune against annihilation and form stable twin-like pairs known as Lehmann clusters. We point out that this immunity is due to the escape of the director field into the third dimension. We show that from a topological point of view, Lehmann clusters can be seen as skyrmion tubes embedded in a helicoidal background, and their extremities have the topology of monopoles.

Measuring Topological Constraint Relaxation in Ring-Linear Polymer Blends

Polymers are an effective test bed for studying topological constraints in condensed matter due to a wide array of synthetically available chain topologies. When linear and ring polymers are blended together, emergent rheological properties are observed as the blend can be more viscous than either of the individual components. This emergent behavior arises since ring-linear blends can form long-lived topological constraints as the linear polymers thread the ring polymers. Here, in this work, we demonstrate how the Gauss linking integral can be used to efficiently evaluate the relaxation of topological constraints in ring-linear polymer blends. For majority-linear blends, the relaxation rate of topological constraints depends primarily on reptation of the linear polymers, resulting in the diffusive time τ d,R for rings of length N R blended with linear chains of length N l to scale as τ d,R ~ N$^2_R$N$^{3.4}_L$.

Mesoporous optically clear heat insulators for sustainable building envelopes

Mesoporous materials exhibit highly controlled nanoscale structures, often templated by liquid crystalline assemblies of surfactants, with emergent and often designable physical properties. However, scaling their fabrication to be suitable for uses like envelopes of buildings is challenging. Here we describe fabrication of flexible square-meter-sized films and multi-centimeter-thick slabs made of three-dimensional spatial graphs of mesopore tubes having all structural features under 50 nanometers. Solution-based kinetic fabrication process templates growing networks of cylindrical surfactant micelles with thin tubes of polysiloxane forming gel networks and, upon replacing surfactants and solvents with air, yields lightweight materials with >99% visible-range optical transparency and ~10 mW K-1m-1 thermal conductivity. Such predesigned metamaterials enable transparent thermal barriers for wall-grade insulated glass units, square-meter window retrofits and unconcentrated solar thermal energy harnessing.
