Protection of 100% Inverter-dominated Power Systems with Grid-Forming Inverters and Protection Relays – Gap Analysis and Expert Interviews

This report summarizes a gap analysis resulting from a literature review and expert interviews conducted by subject matter experts from Sandia National Laboratory, Siemens, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Spring 2023. The gap analysis consists of two main parts: The fault-ride through (FRT) behavior of grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resources (IBR) and the response of state-of-the-art protection relays to the fault currents and voltages from GFM IBRs.

Restoring Homes After Wildfires, Interviews with Practitioners about Common Cleanup Approaches and Knowledge Gaps

This document summarizes the key themes from our interviews with 10 remediation companies regarding common approaches used to remove odor and contaminants from homes impacted by fire and smoke damage Remediation companies are in agreement that thorough cleaning is the first step. Cleaning and removing contaminants from homes impacted by wildfires may be sufficient to eliminate smoke odor, which is the most important step when it comes to reducing exposure to any residues that may pose health risks to residents. Remediation companies differ in their approaches to addressing odors, such as using ozone generators, hydroxyl generators, chlorine dioxide treatment, thermal fogging and applying sealants. Their opinions of what works and why differs. There is little consensus on efficacy, safety, or application protocols. For example, some view ozone very favorably, while others would prefer using other methods. The influence of insurance companies in their coverage for some methods but not others also impact the decision about the approaches used. Remediation companies differ in their view on laboratory testing for contaminants, which may be partly influenced by insurance companies as well.

Staying Competitive in Clean Manufacturing: Insights on Barriers from Industry Interviews

While industrial emissions research has historically focused on energy-intensive sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals, this study addresses a critical gap by examining barriers across all the manufacturing industry in the U.S. Sectors like food processing, retail, plastics, and transportation face unique challenges distinct from heavy industry, operating on thin margins with limited bargaining power while experiencing heightened consumer and stakeholder pressure for improved environmental responsibility. Through structured interview data collection process and using quantitative ratings and qualitative analysis, this research identifies and categorizes emission reduction barriers across four key themes: financial, technical, organizational, and regulatory. Unlike energy-intensive industries that may pursue hydrogen or carbon capture technologies, discrete manufacturing industry like automotive, electrical and electronics, and machine manufacturers typically focus on energy efficiency, electrification of thermal processes, and alternate fuel switching, solutions better aligned with their lower-temperature processes and distributed facility profiles. The study’s primary contribution lies in documenting specific barrier manifestations within organizations and identifying proven mitigation strategies that companies have successfully implemented or observed among peers.

Training Select-in Interviewers for Astronaut Selection: A Program Evaluation

Psychological factors critical to the success of short and long-duration missions have been identified in previous research; however, evaluation for such critical factors in astronaut applicants leaves much room for human interpretation. Thus, an evaluator training session was designed to standardize the interpretation of critical factors, as well as the structure of the select-in interview across evaluators. The purpose of this evaluative study was to determine the effectiveness of the evaluator training sessions and their potential impact on evaluator ratings.
